I understand what reviewers mean now by this is better as a delivery or take-out place. If you are looking for a sit down place, go elsewhere. It's not because it is small - on the contrary I LOVE hole in the wall places - but rather because customer service isn't really priority. Just as an example - we came and ordered a meat/veg combo. I asked for beef and chicken for the meat entrees. Rather than tell us they were out of chicken, when our food came out the guy told us he gave us two beef entrees because they were out of chicken. I guess it would have been nice to be asked rather than having made the decision for me.. I could have asked to try another meat entree or something instead of 2 beefs? Small gripe but it was a bit strange. The beef was delicious and they made it extra spicy for me too! It's made fresh so that's why it takes a LONG time before your food is ready - that's one of the reasons ordering for pick-up or delivery is better than coming to dine. The meat/veg combo has bigger portions but less selection (2 meats and 2 veg I think?) than the combos at another nearby Ethiopian place. Food definitely tastes great and I have no qualms with it - just that I would much prefer ordering for take-out than dining in. It's a family run shop so I feel shitty giving a bad review. However, I definitely prefer the other Ethiopian restaurant. Also, apparently sambussas here are $2 a piece when we inquired. That seems quite steep compared to $3 for 3 sambussas elsewhere? I can get down on some Ethiopian food generally, but Authentic Ethio African has a couple things going for it that make it well worth a visit (and, if you're dining in, squeezing into one of the few tables). First and foremost, the owner is totally fantastic and amazingly friendly. I've rarely felt so genuinely welcome in a restaurant, and he was happy to answer questions about the menu and make suggestions. We ordered the tartare and he popped out several times with a sample to make sure both the doneness and the spice level were to our taste. Second, the menu covers a little more territory than your typical Valley Ethiopian restaurant; if you're looking for something new to explore, you'll probably find it here. They've got the standard dishes you'd expect (done well, no less), sure, but also a variety of dishes I haven't previously seen in Phoenix. Prices and portions are also super reasonable, and the combo offerings are a great way to taste a variety of things at an unreasonably low price. I used to eat at a very authentic Ethiopian restaurant in New York City when I was a kid. They closed over 25 years ago, and I've been chasing the Ethiopian food "dragon" so to speak ever since since. I've tried many places all over the country and nothing has come even close. Until now!!! This not only met my hopeful expectations of what I remember from childhood, but possibly even exceeded it. Hands down the best Ethiopian food I've tasted in 25 years and excellent service to boot! The only downside, I live on the other side of the country and was only in Phoenix for a few days for work. I went with a large group on a Tues. It was busy for this night and seemed to pick up around 7. When it was busy, it does get loud in there but it is a small area. They have booths but we sat at the tables with the baskets that they use to put large platters in. The service was great with our large group and with all the tables she had to service. She was extremely helpful in our ordering. They were out of the fish that evening so didn't get to try that but we did try a large majority of the menu on the platters. We did add the lamb as extra because that meat is not offered on the platters. The food was exceptional and fun. I am a fan of Ethiopian food after having it in Washington D.C. We order Fit Fit and the 2 veggies and 2 meat combo with homemade cottage cheese. The food was very good and filling. The price was also great!!! The veggies were seasoned well. The peas, carrots, lentils and potatoes were all seasoned really well. The chicken Portia was quite large. The place is small, so I'd avoid busy times and don't come with a large group unless you give them notice. I didn't give it 5 stars because of the food temperature. I don't know how it was cooked, but it wasn't hot. In fact, some of it was cool/cold. It was kinda like when you microwave food and the temp is inconsistent.
