FOOD/COFFEE: 5/5 VIBES: 4/5 SERVICE: 4/5 VALUE: 5/5 I don't think I'd order my exact entree again, but I really enjoyed myself here. The overall value is very impressive. The portion of the entree was huge, and, tbh, I enjoyed it even more as a leftover-for-breakfast. The samusa was great! I got the chicken one, which was a little dry, but still delicious - I ate the entire thing. The cappuccino was delicious and a great value. The overall vibe/aesthetic was cute for what it was: kind of a dressy hole-in-the-wall. I would definitely come back and try other entrees - probably ask for their rec this time around.

Amazing FOOD! My husband is Ethiopian and we have tried almost all the places in AZ and this is by far the BEST! The food always hits the same and the customer service is amazing they are the nicest! Also me not knowing the menu and when I go by myself - they are very helpful with explaining what the dishes are! The ambiance of the restaurant is very welcoming and it feels almost family oriented like when grandma wants to keep feeding you lol

Really delicious authentic food. I love Ethiopian food but hadn't had it in a really long time, so I was excited to come here today! My order was ready quickly, I got there in about 10 minutes and it was ready! I got a lentil sambusa and veggie plate. The lentil sambusa was really good. Very flavorful and a good mix of textures. The veggie plate was super flavorful too and a good variety of things to try on the plate. Huge portions, I have plenty left over. Would definitely recommend if you like Ethiopian!

The food at First Cup is delicious. I'll usually order their meat entrees such as quanta fir fir, awaze tibs, or derek tibs and am never disappointed with the quality of the meals. As an added bonus, this restaurant also sells injera in bulk if you're seeking to take some home for other meals you might make or eat with it.

Top-quality Ethiopian food with plenty of vegetarian/vegan options. We each ordered a veggie combo ($15) to go for lunch and our order was ready shortly after we showed up. You get a nice array of different dishes (misir wot, gomen, shiro, green beans+carrots, cabbage), with a generous helping of injera to scoop it up. Everything was really nice flavoured, with the stand-outs being the misir wot and shiro -- in fact, the creamy shiro was among the best I've ever had. Really tasty stuff. The guy who took my order and who dealt with me for pick-up was super friendly. Really great spot overall for Ethiopian. Highly recommended.

I recently got back from Ethiopia, and was excited to show my boyfriend the food I had over there. I found this restaurant, and went with him. It was so yummy and authentic. Just what I was looking for! We are both vegan and got the veggie combo with extra shiro. It's delicious. If you have not tried Ethiopian food, you are missing out. It's so flavorful! It's good and you eat with your hands, and it's meant to be shared. We will definitely be back! They also do traditional coffee there as well for three people or more. Coffee was found in Ethiopia so you know it's strong and delicious. I do hope they add a vegan creamer like almond milk for it soon! The owner was incredibly nice and helpful as well.

The food was very authentic, fresh and tasty. I liked the mashed chick pea dish (I forget the name) but it was very flavorful. The injera bread was spongy and sour, very delicious. I'm glad we tried this place! Support local business!

My friend introduced to me to First Cup not too long ago and I'm glad he did. As an Ethiopian myself, I'm always wondering how great each restaurant is in the Valley. As far as Ethiopian restaurants go, First Cup definitely ranks as one of the best. Ethiopian food is meant to be shared and ate together. As such, my two friends and I got a huge plate of food with three different entrees. From the menu, we had Kikllile, Quanta firfir, and Dulet. Each had its unique flavor to it that will not disappoint. Being that it's customary to eat with your hands, Ethiopian food might not appeal to some but once you can get accustomed to it, you will open your taste buds to wonderful food. First Cup is an incredible restaurant and easily worth a visit.

Kare Ethiopians' location offers the traditional objects and décor of the culture and traditions - giving you a feel and apropos ambience. But the tables and chairs are reminiscent of the 60s with somewhat sticky plastic table covers, it has airy and comfortable seating, adequate service and courtesy and admirably modest prices - yet the food was good, but less than extraordinary! If you're not an Ethiopian food fanatic, Kare may not be the place to start your testing your taste buds. But if you're not an aficionádo or enthusiast already, there are a handful of other Ethiopian restos to better try. Right off the bat, when served my requested Pop Walia Lager, I had to ask for a glass, and the beer was barely cold! My wife ordered water, was served a bottle - no glass! We started with appetizers of reasonably tasty meat Sambussa. We decided that our main would be a sampler dish giving us ample opportunity to try an across-the-board spectrum of their offerings. It was a good choice. Within minutes of our appetizer arrived our sampler platter which included: selections of misr wat (red lentil), alecha wat (vegetable stew), fosolia (butter beans), gomen (damn good collard greens), and tikil gomen (excellent cabbage and potato stew) and key sir (a very good beet, potato, cabbage mix), all served with traditional injera and garnished with very little salad salad. I was hoping the selection would also have included some servings of kitfo (beef), atkilt (spice cabbage), and/or Yebeg Alicha (lamb stew), but I was not in luck. If this restaurant is near you, it will be a relatively decent choice for Ethiopian, but if not, for really excellent renditions there are at least two other competitors worth trying and more mouthwatering.

This recent visit was my third time having Ethiopian food, and I went in with an open mind. I remembered the last time I had Ethiopian food, I didn't really enjoy it. You have the option of choosing from their platters, or you can build your own. I created my own platter - I got the lamb dish (#5), the chicken dish (#3), and lentils (#9). These 3 dishes came on injera, which is a sour, fermented flatbread. It is basically a plate for the food, but you also use it to scoop up the meat/lentils to eat. My order also came with several more pieces of injera. The injera "plate" got soggy from the meat and lentils, so it was harder to use it to grab the fillings because it just kept falling apart. The chicken wasn't that great, so I wouldn't order that again, but the lamb dish and the lentils were sooo good. I had enough leftover for a second meal. I'm glad I gave Ethiopian food another chance! Next time, I would probably get the beef, lamb, and lentils.

We ended up getting platters off the menu instead, mostly ordering vegetarian. (But if you're hungry or want more food, the buffet is a good option.) The green beans and the collards are a solid combination because of the difference in texture and spice. Cabbage, fish and beef were also good. Everything came either on a bed of injeera (soft) or rice, or a combination. On weekdays they have lunch specials which are the best deals and very good and inevitably you'll have leftovers to enjoy later. Service has been better and more attentive in the past but it was busier than usual too. The actual decor and location is a bit dated but you probably wouldn't come here for the atmosphere. They also sell their coffee and other small things to go. I don't have ethiopian that often so this was a treat. Shared parking lot with other businesses.

Wow! For $17 I got the vegan combo plate and it came with 2 sides -- I opted for the mesir wat (spicy lentils) and gomen (collard greens). The mesir wat and gomen came beautifully wrapped in an injera, with a salad on the top and two very large rolled up injeras. This combo would be more than enough for two people to share. I ordered right as they opened and my order came fairly quickly (~40 mins), so I was really happy with that as well. The mesir wat was seasoned spectacularly! Just enough heat that pairs with the savory flavor. The gomen also was deliciously garlicky, all coming together so harmoniously with the sourness of the injera. I was worried that ordering it for delivery would affect the experience, but everything came nice and warm and it was so great to have this meal at home. My problem lies with the service mostly. All the men that worked there, sat in the room with the TV, area watching the soccer game including our server. We sat there forever to get the door and then I had to go wake him for our bill. He didn't offer an itemized bill, just gave me the amount. I had to ask for an itemized bill. And this is why: We arrived on a Tuesday around 5.30 pm. The posted hour for opening was 4.00 pm. The doors were locked. I called the restaurant. I saw the restaurants other (first) location and called that number. It was answered and I asked about the restaurant not being open. I was assured that someone was on the way. We decided to walk around the deserted shopping center but then found an Albertsons there. We needed a few things, so we went grocery shopping. Upon returning to the restaurant, we found it open. No one was there, so we stood there for a short time. Eventually a smiling man greeted us and asked if we were the ones who had called. I nodded and he profusely apologized for the delay. After a while of sitting at a table, he returned to take our order. We wanted Kitfo (raw), Chicken tibs, and the 4 veggie combo with tikel gomen, gomen, misir wat, and yesuf fitfit. I had never had the last and was excited to try it. Since there were no Ethiopian beers like Harar or Bedel, we settled for a Modelo especial draft, our favorite Mexican beer. The waiter (who was the owner of the two restaurants, as it turned out later), asked what we would like if there was no Kitfo, the main thing we were there for. We decided to get beef tibs, in that case. Eventually the food arrived with no Kitfo, but beef tibs, Misir wat, tikil gomen, gomen and salad. He was unable to do the yesuf fitfit. He offered a substitute and we got the keyser. The food was good. Not the best Ethiopian food I've had, but authentic tasting. The salad lacked acid. It was salty, but I don't mind that part. The veggies were done correctly. The beef tibs were heavy on the rosemary but pleasant in taste. There were only onions, no hot peppers like in other versions. As always, we ordered too much. The owner, Andu, gave us a complimentary piece of cake to take with us and recommended we visit his first restaurant in Phoenix where we may have gotten kitfo. In my 4 star rating, I only considered the food and the lovely service we received. I did not consider that the opening times were ignored, and we could not get 2 of the dishes we wanted that were on the menu. The next time we are in town, we will try the Phoenix location.
