Gojo Ethiopian Restaurant

Everything at Gojo is excellent! Beginning with entering the restaurant, they are very welcoming; actually, the first time that I went, years ago, she did not speak much English, and I knew no Americ. Nonetheless, post being certainly cared for very well, I became a frequent customer of Gojo! In actuality, if I had the money, in God's Mighty Name, i'd probably eat there almost every night.

Great, authentic, tasty, Ethiopian food. Always prepared fresh. Prices are reasonable and it tastes better than some restaurants in the valley offering the same food. I always get a veggie combo plate so I can taste a little of everything.

Amazing food and the best people! I've come here every week for the past 6 weeks while overcoming a medical issue with my stomach. My friend recommended Gojo after I asked her for help and she said this food helps her diabetic mom too. My family comes once a week and enjoys their cultural decorations, food, and company. Who knows, maybe the company helped heal my stomach too! :) Let me tell you - the food is not only delicious, you GET SO MUCH. The photo is half of the Gojo Combo. It's also reasonably priced for the amount and quality of food. Never too spicy, always seasoned great, tender meats and veggies. We'll be back weekly even once my stomach is healed!

The norm is when something is on your table when you walk in and sit down you are not charged. When my group sat down each person had a bottle of water at their place. Before we walked out, each of us had to pay for the bottle of water that was at each person's place. There was no notice. I asked for a check while leaving. I got one but it was not itemized. The water cost about $3.00 The waiter noticed he gave the wrong dish to someone. After the patron told the waiter he had eaten from it, the waiter wanted to exchange dishes. Objections were voiced. The waiter kept saying it was OK. The other parties said it was not. Eventually the waiter acquiesced. These were not expensive dishes. Their primary ingredient is dried legumes, not lobster. There was a about a cup of the legumes in each one. There was no excuse for this. Go-Jo is place where you are deceived about what is included is not one to be trusted. Where one-half eaten bowl of split peas is imprudently exchanged for another's. It poses a danger to our health.

Downright home cooked Ethiopian food full of flavor and authenticity. The veggie dishes were soooo good...coupled with the spicy Awaze Tibs and the meat dishes... such a satisfying Ethiopian food fix. The restaurant is a no frills hole in the wall ...but the authentic meal and coffee ceremony set up is legit!

We enjoyed our dinner at Gojo! The vegetarian options were all excellent. The meat options, the sauce was great however the meat texture was a bit tough to eat. Loved the decor. Service was a bit slow but very friendly staff so we didn't mind. We will be coming back!

The owner and his wife are very kind! We had dinner and ordered a combination platter which was very fun. We got to try a little bit of everything and now we know our favorites for next time. He helped explain everything and didn't rush us.

Pretty solid, inexpensive, good-value Ethiopian food in a no-frills setting. I showed up looking for a quick lunch, and that's what I got. I ordered their veggie combo ($16 plus tax), which comes with 7 different veggie dishes and injera. The highlights were definitely the misir wot and the shiro (middle and bottom middle), with the other dishes being rather middling. Good portion, good value and pleasant service. Solid spot.

A friend and I ate here recently. We did sort of question the looks and location, however once inside we were warmly greeted. We both had the Gojo Combo and I have to say of the three Ethiopian restaurants we have tried in the valley this is the best of the three. The combo gave us a great taste of the veggie and meat options. Yum! Definitely recommend.

Food was quite good and service was good enough. The major concern was the fact that there was a mf bottle cap in our dish ! Not sanitary. I don't enjoy giving bad reviews but they need to take more precaution because trust me, this was not appetizing... On top of that, when we notified the worker, he reached with his bare hand in to grab the bottle cap and remove it, saying "sorry". Sorry for the bad review but I had to bring this to attention

Café Lalibela was closed this week and I was craving Ethiopian food so I decided to check this place out. The restaurant is a little hidden gem in the area. The family that owns the restaurant is very friendly. The interior of the restaurant is simpler than Café Lalibela but the food is just as good. The meat combo is a good way to try the different meats. I do wish the portion was slightly bigger because it was so good!

Any bad review about this place is pure delusion. The food here is amazing and seasoned to perfection, every time I come here the flavor is consistent and the previous time. I've been to other Ethiopian restaurants and this one reigns superior. The service and ambiance is okay, nothing too crazy or exciting but I'm not letting that get in the way of how good the food is. Don't second guess trying this place because if you do then you're missing out on a good food experience.

The spices and "soups" (more like stews) are exotic, similar to Indian food in presentation, but very different in how the meats are prepared. Traditionally, you eat the soups with fufu. I would describe fufu like a thick, glutinous, fairly bland, root paste used as the delivery vehicle for the soup to your face instead of a fork or spoon. No utensils! Fingers only and it makes the experience even more fun. The fufu pairs perfectly with the soups and is very filling. One entree easily makes for leftovers. I believe the African goddess that cooked and delivered the food to our table is the owner. She knew it was our first time and you could feel her care in the preparation and her joy in explaining the best way to eat. The dining area has about a dozen standard diner style tables and there is a sink IN the corner of the dining room to conveniently wash your hands, before and after eating. This no frills, locally owned treasure is a must try. If you are intimidated by new cuisines eaten in untraditional ways, look up "Egusi and Fufu" on your favorite social streaming app to learn everything you need to know. You will walk in with confidence. Regardless, the fine folks working here are also kind and eager to help and make recommendations. I'm posting with updated menu photos (Nov 2025). Prices seem to range $20-$25 per soup including the fufu. We had the Egusi and the Cassava Leaf soups. Both fresh, amazing and in my opinion a good value.

But, unfortunately for me my experience was the exact opposite . This location is set in the Tempe food court. So automatically I was turned off by the fact it's not personable no interaction with the actual creator or business owner . You have to order through a kiosk ( which I do understand the idea of conveniency culture .) But places like this deserve to be show cased . What I ordered was fried plantains, Ogbono Soup , with two pieces of chicken , poundo fufu, and two sodas . For starters , The plantains were a bit undercooked, the soup was lacking flavor very ( oily , had no other contents but broth and the chicken ) so what was advertised on the menu looked NOTHING like what I got , no fixings such as ( no okra , the peppers etc) . The chicken was dry and it didn't taste fresh at all , it had this peculiar after taste I couldn't quite put my finger on. Overall I wasn't at all satisfied with my food and I'd say this meal in particular wasn't worth the $51.00 whatsoever. I want to say I stand firmly on supporting black businesses, but I won't lie about my experience. I'd say i would give this place a second try and at least come back to try the Jollof rice since that seems to be their top seller as it was sold out .

I love traveling to Africa and have visited a number of times. I haven't made it over to Ethiopia yet. Café Lalibela serves authentic Ethiopian cuisine with recipes that have been passed down through generation. The family that owns this place are passionate about sharing their culture. One of the family members came out and greeted our table. She shared a little bit about the history of Café Lalibela and how they made their way to Tempe. The staff also described the food that we were about to eat as they brought it out. We ordered a couple of platters and enjoyed eating it communally. The menu consists of Ethiopian favorites like Doro Wat, Tibs, Kitfo and a variety of vegan and gluten-free dishes. I am a big lentil fan and love that lentils are a big part of Ethiopian cuisine. I had the Lalibela Deluxe platter in front of me most of the evening and enjoyed the flavors and spices of each of the items. Ethiopian food is so vibrant and colorful. If you have never tried, they do not use silverware to pick up their food. Food is eaten with Injera - a spongy pancake-like flatbread that you use to scoop up your food. After living in Benin for two years, we were bummed that the nearest Beninese restaurant was in Tucson and found this place to fill a foodie hole in our hearts/stomachs. It did not disappoint! When we first walked in around 5pm on a weekday, it was pretty empty. Over the course of the evening though, we saw many people coming in for large pick up orders. Unassuming interior with an array of simple seating arrangements and afro-pop/music videos playing in the background. You can see the whole kitchen from dining area and can tell it's a family operation! The menu can be a little confusing as they have change their specials every day. If you're looking for something in particular and don't see it on the menu for that day, I would definitely call in to check. We went on a Thursday (special was potato greens), but they also happened to have cassava leaves available (usually Wednesday's special). The staff were also very kind in answering questions. There were a few items we never had before, and they offered us generous samples of what felt like the whole menu! I ended up getting the 1) fried fish with attieke and alloco (plantain) which I believe is an everyday special and 2) the potato greens stewed with meat and served with rice. It was about $20 each dish which was a little pricier than I anticipated until the portions came out: they were huge. I got a mountain of rice on a platter to go with my potato greens. No wonder people kept coming by to pick up for their family dinners! Ya'll, when I tasted this food, I almost shed a tear. The stewed potato greens were phenomenal. Well spiced with tons of flavor packed in, accompanied perfectly with rice or fufu. The meat stewed with the greens was also very tender and flavorful as well. Honestly, I don't remember if it was beef or pork but I found myself savoring every little morsel with rice. Mmmmm. As for the fried fish and attieke dish: attieke is like a slightly tangy grain made from cassava flour and water. The attieke flavor and texture was spot on, and their pepper sauce was like coming home. I will say that both their alloco and fish were a little dry for me (I like both practically deep fried), but I smothered it in their amazing pepper sauce and devoured it anyways. We also got some of their homemade bottled bissap and ginger beer that was great. *Note: they only have bottled water for sale, so if you go ham on the pepper sauce like we did, prepare yourself. I loved this place and can't wait to come back to try some of their other offerings when the craving hits!
