Despite the negative reviews below I have always had a great experience here. Most significantly, they did my wedding dress from me and it turned out beautifully. They changed the shape and turned it from a dress I was a little concerned about to a dress I loved. They also did another bridesmaid gown for a friend's wedding and lots of various pants and dresses. The work is not cheap, but more than once I have requested a small adjustment to their work and they have done it for free. I do recommend discussing the cost as you are discussing the alterations so you know what it will be upfront. Ultimately I am always happy with my clothes and will continue to bring my alterations in here! read more

This is my go-to place for any alterations or custom tailoring. I have taken them a complicated military band tunic that was not made right and they took it apart and put it back together for an excellent fit. I can also depend on them for adjusting straps and buckles on Scottish kilts (yes, they can work on a vintage army kilt! Try finding another place in Austin that is up to that challenge). And they are careful and precise dry cleaners as well. I never hesitate to take them my unusual items as well as the simpler stuff. Their prices are fair for the quality of work -- often done by hand -- and their reliability and willingness to work on a job others would turn down or not do well. By the way, customers can park in the back of the building and not get stuck looking for drop-off or pick-up parking on Lamar. (The horrible traffic congestion on these local streets is the only downside to coming here.) A very superior Austin business! read more

These people are perfectly willing to take you money (lots of it btw), as long as you don't have any issue with the quality of their work. After using them several times out of convenience, I was dismayed that a sweater I brought in for a small repair was returned to me, un-repaired, apparently dry cleaned and now full of small holes. As outraged as I felt entitled to be, I wasn't, but I did expect the original repair (which I had paid for) to be completed and the holes to patched up, but nope, no way, not interested. They were perfectly willing to lose my future business rather than complete the work I had already paid them for. read more

I went to the branch on Spicewood Springs in North Austin. Again, as seems to be common with most of the posts, the quality of their work was impressive, but the customer service was HORRIBLE. I thought the price was reasonable: $200 for one skirt to be taken in, one pair of pants to be hemmed, and two pair of suit pants (lined) to be taken in. I had read positive posts regarding the quality so I didn't think that anything else would be an issue. Unfortunately, I just had a very negative experience. The thing that bothered me the most was that after paying my bill, I told her that I'd like to give her some feedback regarding the experience I had with her shop and she immediately became defensive, interrupting me repeatedly. The conversation ended with her saying "Good luck finding someone else who can do this kind of work!" I couldn't believe it! The following things went wrong with my order: - My clothes were not ready at the time promised. I arrived at the shop 30 minutes after the appointed time. I got a phone call from the shop as I pulled in to the parking lot that my items would be late. - They only offered me a 5% discount for the inconvenience: $10 on a $200+ order. - When I arrived to pick up my clothes the next day, I was in the fitting room trying on the clothes and the owner sat outside the dressing room trying to explain why they had been late delivering my items. - The day before, the male clerk explained that they were late delivering my items because someone had called in sick. The next day, when picking up my items, it was MY fault that the items were late because the job was harder than they expected. In fact, she explained (through the curtain of the dressing room), that I was lucky she hadn't charged me more... even though she was the one who had underestimated the effort. - They asked me for a 50% deposit upon dropping off my clothes and also requested that I pay cash. I included this in my feedback to her and she said that it is in case customers don't pick up their clothes on time and in case customers give them a bad check. I find that pretty insulting. The only positive is that my clothes were eventually altered correctly. read more

I'd give zero stars if I could. As they say, 80% of life is just showing up. Well, Austin Alterations didn't even show up. I needed alterations on short notice and fought traffic, heat, and a busy schedule to make sure I was there WELL below closing . . I was knocking at their front door a full 15 minutes before closing time. Not good enough for these lazy people . . the business next door told me that they were long since closed. If a business won't even respect their customers' time, I certainly don't think they will do a careful job with the work they do. I had a much better experience at Gazzane a few weeks ago, and thought I'd try out these clowns to save the longer drive. Big mistake. I'll make the drive next time. Brenda is by far my favorite tailor in the entire city, and I've looked. Here's what you need to know: 1. The quality of her work is great. I couldn't ask for any better 2. Has a great eye for fit (in my case, suits) 3. Turnaround is very precise and she'll work with you on getting your items ready by when you need them. I took a cool vintage dress here for alterations after Ace Tailors down the street told me they couldn't fix it. Austin Alterations staff was really friendly, and she told me the easiest thing to do would be to put cups in the bust of the dress to make it fit, instead of actually altering the dress. I passed, because the dress is 2 or 3 cup sizes too big for me, so this was not an acceptable fix. However, I would take things here again if they were more straightforward, like hemming jeans or something. read more

Austin Alterations is AMAZING!!! I won a wedding and had 6 weeks to get everything together. I went to Dallas and bought a sample dress that was way too big. I was told it was okay and it could be sized down.... that was really bad advice. I brought my dress to Austin Alterations with 3 weeks until my wedding and they promised it would be done. They did some serious alterations. I had lace, beading, a long train and several layers to bustle. They had to resize the bodice twice. Based on the reviews I knew they would do the alterations correctly. When I tell you these alterations were worth EVERY PENNY!!!!!!! MY DRESS FIT PERFECTLY!! Don't go anywhere else! I took my wedding dress for alterations after reading reviews on Yelp. The woman who helped me was great. She has a great eye for fit, and she makes honest suggestions with out being pushy. I was very pleased with her work on my dress which included creating a new neckline, hemming, and a few other minor changes. She was friendly and very helpful. I believe her pricing is very reasonable, not cheap, but well worth the quality. Hands down the best alterations experience I have ever had, and being very petite, I have had quite a few! read more

Great, reliable and friendly service! I have been a regular here for over 3 years. I get dry cleaning and alterations done here. Dry cleaning turn around time seems to be a little slower than other places. The attention to detail in with alterations is great. I've had simple hemming to altering evening gowns done. The owners are flexible with getting things done faster, if you're in a hurry. Also, I appreciate that it's a small family business, and prefer it over going to large chains. read more

I took a huge risk and ordered a formal dress online a week before a big event. The dress came 3 days before the event, leaving me searching for someone to do some rush alterations. Brenda at Austin Alterations was the only person I spoke to who was willing to take on the challenge. The initial fitting took no more than 10 minutes, and my dress was ready to go 2 days later and fit perfectly. Brenda was very personable and had a great sense of humor, making her very easy to work with. She heard me out and was able to nail everything I asked of her. Brenda at Austin Alterations & Cleaners is amazing. SImply amazing. We bought a wedding dress that was much too large for my daughter at a consignment store. We are new at this wedding business and had no idea how much alterations would cost. This dress has layers and layers of tulle, and a fitted bodice with handmaid lace and embroidery. We had been to a few other places before we found Austin Alterations. The other places either told us that they couldn't do the job because it was too intricate, or that they would charge 3 times what we ended up playing Brenda. She did an AMAZING job with this dress. By the fourth fitting the dress looked like it was made for my daughter. I was skeptical at the beginning that this could be done, but Brenda did it. I am so thankful that we did not have to go and get another dress. My daughter has the wedding dress of her dreams because of Brenda. We couldn't be happier. read more

Awful service and its expensive for no reason. The quality of the work is poor at best. I had several things altered and on the first wear, the alterations unraveled. I called them about it and the owner Brenda sounded nice, BUT when I went in, she tried to say that it wasn't what I had asked for, etc. She was rude and would not help me out. Tuesday morning I took two dresses there. I was nervous because I figured they'd be a bit more expensive due to the area, but I did need my stuff quickly and it was very close to my work. I needed to add a buttonhole to one of the dresses and to have it ironed, and I needed the other dress dry-cleaned with a very small tear sewn up. The woman told me they would be ready Thursday afternoon. I was happy, as that was exactly when I needed the dresses by. So Thursday afternoon came and I dropped in, only to be told my clothes weren't ready yet. The clothes don't arrive on the premises until 6pm, she said. I pointed out she told me Thursday afternoon, and here it was, 2pm. She then pointed out 6pm was written on my ticket, a ticket that I had shoved into my purse upon being handed it on Tuesday and I never looked at it again. I thought that was a rather disingenuous move of her, because had she told me 6pm I wouldn't have left my clothes there. And I wouldn't've had to sit at Book People for several hours waiting for my stuff. And who considers six o' clock the afternoon, anyway? So, when I arrived at 6 to grab my stuff, I wasn't expecting the price to be that great. And holy cow, was I right. Almost 50 friggin' bucks! Only the tag for altering is itemized, and that tag lets me know that adding an extra buttonhole onto a cotton strap is $12. Then, to repair approximately a half inch of torn seam was $8. And, somehow, to get one damn dress ironed and the other dry-cleaned added another $25+ to the bill. W.T.F. I can't even be impressed on the sewing, because really, how much skill can be evident in such minor work? Screw this place. Take your clothes to Nelda's Tailors instead. The only reason I didn't on Tuesday was because Nelda's doesn't do cleaning, unfortunately. But whatever you do, don't pretend Austin Alterations is a great place because they altered and cleaned your clothes. Basic competency at one's trade should be expected, but those ungodly prices shouldn't be tolerated. read more

I was going to a tailor's downtown, who I initially liked very much. But then I found Austin Alterations one afternoon when I realized I needed two pair of pants tailored for a wedding I was going to the very next day. I rushed over, and asked if she could just do at least one pair straight away for me, and she said of course. She also took measurements for the other pair (to do later). When I came that evening (!) to pick up the pants, she had both pairs ready. The price was quite reasonable and her skill was apparent. In fact, she even showed me a glitch in how my old tailor had previously altered one pair. To my surprise, I agreed with her assessment. This is totally my new favorite tailor. read more

She did a perfect job, making what was a 4 size too big, designer dress, fit me perfectly! I took a jacket there to have the zipper repaired, and was given a quote of around $40. When I went to pick it up, she notified me that she found a pull of the same color in her shop, and it only cost me $10. I appreciate that she was honest and saved me the money. The one time I was not fully happy with an alteration, I brought it back and it was fixed for free. Caveat: I didn't have anything altered here, so I cannot speak about the quality of their work. What I can speak about is the cost of their work. After reading many positive Yelp reviews, I decided this is the place for me, especially considering it is convenient to where I work. The Job: I have 2 thin, cheaply made cotton shirtdresses from India that I need to have let out at the bust. No lining, no darts, nothing except two seams that need to be opened and sewed back together from the waist to the armpit with the extra fabric inside the current seam. I could do this myself, but I don't have a sewing machine. She quoted me $60 for the work. $50 for the labor and $5 for each garment for the "rush job", as I need the work done before the end of the day tomorrow. Ripping out 4 seams and sewing them back together takes an expert tailor about 15 minutes. I need to get in the alteration business, if the going rate is about $240/hr. I wouldn't recommend this tailor unless you have money to burn or an intricate job that requires skill deserving of the price. On a somewhat unrelated note, I also intensely dislike when merchants, who all clearly speak English to you when a sale is promising, immediately begin speaking in their native tongue, while you're in the store, when it becomes clear you are of no monetary value to them. I have brought everything from swim-suits to bridesmaid dresses and they can work wonders! The lady who owns the shop is always there and provides excellent customer service.
