I ordered a shoe online, Athletic Annex cancelled my order stating I asked for it to be cancelled. False. I sent them an email, they tried to gaslight me saying they sold out of the product and they tried to purchase the shoe online direct from Nike for me but it was sold out. I can prove they aren't telling the truth. I recommended Athletic Annex to friends who purchased the same shoe after me online and had their orders filled. read more

I'm still thinking about the wonderful experience I had at Athletic Annex in Nora earlier this week, and I'm here to rave about it! A little background: I am not a runner or a jogger. I just like to go on walks on the Monon Trail and other parks in the area. My athletic shoes were old and had very little support or tread, and I wanted to visit a store that could provide a fitting and gait assessment to put me in the right shoe. There are so many shoe options, and I didn't know where to start. I ended up at Athletic Annex after I had a subpar experience at a competitor store in the area. I booked a fitting appointment online, but I'm not sure it was necessary as they didn't seem to expect me. Regardless, I didn't have to wait long to be paired up with Gary, one of the friendly Athletic Annex employees. He watched me walk on the treadmill, which is tucked away in a private room so no one else is watching. He recorded me on an iPad and reviewed the footage to see how I strike the ground. From there, he brought out a few pairs of shoes to try. I was surprised to learn I should be in a size 10.5 shoe instead of my normal size 10, since athletic shoes tend to run smaller. News to me! After trying on 5-7 pairs and explaining what I liked and didn't like about each, we found a winner: Asics Gel Nimbus 23. You just *know* when you've found the right pair, and this was it. Gary was very pleasant to work with and did not at all push me to purchase. He suggested I should switch to a merino wool sock instead of a cotton sock for a better fit, and he directed me toward AA's own brand of socks which are less expensive than Feetures. They have a great rewards program, too - spend $150 and get $15 to spend in-store. That's a free pair of socks! Overall, I was super impressed with Athletic Annex, the store (it looks shiny and brand new with a large selection of apparel, too), and the customer service. I felt really comfortable here throughout the entire experience. In fact, none of the customers there were runners, either - one customer was a schoolteacher looking for a pair of comfortable shoes and another was an older woman with a visual impairment who was referred by her podiatrist. This store is for everyone, regardless of age or ability. And they have a sign behind the register that literally says that. All are welcome! Despite the fact that I would easily say Athletic Annex is not particularly targeted toward a person like me, it's one of those places I always enjoy shopping and I consider it to be one of the best options for runners in Central Indiana. I went back in to Athletic Annex following a 5k early in the morning where I won the wheelchair division and my prize was an Athletic Annex gift card. This was not the first time I'd won this 5k's wheelchair division (Punch Line: Usually because I'm the only wheelchair user participating). Athletic Annex is a sponsor of the event and I'm always grateful to be able to head back into this shop in Nora. As you probably know, they're located in the same strip center as Whole Foods, Global Gifts, and other shops I enjoy. They're also across from Target. There's accessible parking throughout this parking lot and appropriate curb cuts. It's an older shopping center, however, it's had multiple renovations and is pretty well kept. The doorway here is a 2-door glass doorway. It's a little heavy, but nearly every time I've ever been here an employee has been nearby if I needed assistance. Yesterday, there were 3 employees working. While this is called "Athletic Annex," there's little denying they are primarily a running store. Why do I say they're not for someone like me? First off, they're primarily about running footwear. I don't have feet. Enough said about that. Secondly, while I'm an active wheelchair user who has done multiple long-distance events the truth is I'm not what you'd call a "serious athlete." I would easily call Athletic Annex a store for the more serious runner and more of a premium store (both price and quality). They offer running shoes and running clothing for men and women with a simple store layout. They offer electronics, compression items, nutrition products, and a few other odds and ends. It's a relatively small and very specialized store with sales reps who are knowledgeable and fiercely encouraging. I tend to joke a lot about my tendency to come in "first and last" in wheelchair divisions, but in a place like Athletic Annex there's an awful lot of encouragement for having gone out and given it one's best. The store is co-owned by Bob Weddle and Bob Kennedy. Weddle is an original co-owner of the story. Kennedy is a known name to any true runner (or wheeler in my case) as a former Olympic runner and held the 5,000-meter American record for 13 years. He ran at IU and was a 20-time Big Ten champ and 4-time NCAA champion. In other words, these folks know running. They offer a virtual gait analysis, training programs, community runs, and typically do have clearance items. Athletic Annex is also immensely involved in the community (such as sponsoring yesterday's 5k) and they have a rather extensive social justice statement on their website. I do wish they carried at least some items for wheelchair athletes (admittedly, a hard argument to make when I am typically the only wheelchair user in local 5k events). I also find that while they have the occasional XL item, their clothing seems very geared toward people who are in a more traditional shape for running. I could easily see someone just starting out getting kind of depressed in here. However, there's so much to like here that I'm still going 5-star. For my gift card, I was able to get a t-shirt and multiple nutrition supplements for energy and endurance. The store layout is attractive (and accessible). The employees are supremely friendly and helpful and encouraging. While selection is not broad, it's all high quality and you get dependable advice for using it. I think we sometimes forget that Athletic Annex is one of Indiana's own. It's been so dependable for so long and it's just always there. It's truly a store for the serious Indiana runner (and the not so serious Indiana wheeler like me). read more

I bought new running shoes just before the lockdown. Great experience even though they were super busy because of a running event sign up. Then the shoes weren't performing well after a few uses and the staff were so helpful over the phone at troubleshooting and helping me exchange and get new ones. When I travel from Virginia to Fishers I always stop by the Athletic Annex at the Yard. Luke helped me out yesterday with some super good insoles for my OC's. I never realized how important those insoles are until Luke educated me. He did an analysis of my feet and recommended a precisely fitted insole. Though the number of stores specializing in running has increased in Indianapolis, the Athletic Annex continues to be a premier place to come, learn and purchase top quality sports shoes and clothing and other items. Yes you can go to your big box stores, but often times the reps working in these stores are not enthusiasts. Seriously this place is absolutely amazing!! You will find things that are "needed" for running ranging from some apparel, shoes, insoles, running belts, water bottles, fitness watches etc. Their employees truly go out of their way to make sure that they are able to give you the best customer service and exactly what your body needs to be successful. This place is the best store for runners and anyone who is serious about finding the best shoe for them. This isn't your shopping mall foot locker packing the shelves with the popular names and styles. They have a huge selection from Brooks, Saucony, Asics, Mizuno, Adidas, and yes Nike. They also carry a large line of clothing for runners as well as gear and some energy snacks. So lets talk about the most important aspect of why this place is the best. The staff!! When you come here to buy shoes you are not looking for style or really even price. You want a shoe that works for you and will help you train better and safer. They look at how you walk and run, they talk to you about any issues you may have had in the past with other shoes, when you try the shoes on they watch you run with them outside or on a treadmill to see how you like them and to watch you run in them so they can give you other options to try. I really needed some new running shoes so I came the first day they reopened. They were so nice and made sure everything was always clean and had these stations that were 6 feet apart so no one was close to each other. I got really cool shoes and they didn't like get mad or offended if you told them you didn't like the shoes. Great service and personal attention to find the perfect running shoes. They look at how you walk, ask about your running style/average mileage per week and choose the perfect shoe accordingly.
