If you call the store, answers are ambiguous and you get the sense you're "bothering" the person. Similar experience with in person visits, except you get added pomposity. EVERY time. This store is the closest location to me of high end outdoor gear I have found. I checked online to make sure they would have what I needed before making the trip from the Meridian and 91st street area where I was attending a doctor's office for the day and had a chance to shop while on my lunch break. I was looking for Merrell hiking shoes to replace the Vasque shoes I have been wearing for the last ten years. I have been wearing high end hiking shoes as everyday footwear since I discovered mountain trail hiking in Tucson back in 2002. Their online web site said they had a pair normally retailing for $120 on sale for $80 but it must have been online only since I could not find it in the store. This store did not carry Vasque but I had previously owned a pair of Merrell shoes and knew they were good quality and would last a long time. They offered two choices which were waterproof and not waterproof. I chose the waterproof although I liked the color of the non-waterproof better. The pair I chose were basically brown and I was hoping to get a different color since I had been wearing brown for so long. They offered two other colors, an olive green and a lighter color online but they did not appeal to me. I was hoping for a dark gray or something to match black and jeans better. Service was only so-so. Another customer and I waited in the shoe department for someone to wait on us while other employees looked at us but didn't assist us. It's not like we can help ourselves. Someone has to go in the back and grab a box and bring it out for us to try on. Eventually someone came to help me but the other customer gave up and left. Checking out was equally frustrating. Two cashiers both stuck with customers for a long time, one bickering over a return and not getting a full credit. This is where other stores have a separate counter for these issues so customers who want to simply pay and go can do so without a long wait and no one getting checked out. Standing in line or waiting to be helped while multiple other employees seem to be available to help is frustrating. read more

My experience was that I was looking at their online store and found a deal. I went to the physical location and got the item while browsing other potential buys, while four other employees gathered, initiating an awkward, painful conversation in the climbing section. I have been an REI customer for 5+ years and I don't frequent the store as often. But yesterday's visit was intentional with upcoming outdoor plans this year and I needed some upgrades. REI is an all in all outdoor activities store. It carried everything from maps to chafing balms and water filters for the most intense hikes to cover your every need. The quality of items is top notch so expect good prices - shoes and apparel can last as long as 5 to 10 years if used well. I replaced my hiking shoes out of a "want" but not that the shoes were damaged and beyond repair. The customer service is on point and the store associates do everything to help you make the best choice. There's also 10% cash-back that you receive as a coupon for all your spends through the year. I end up getting 200-300 depending on how much I spend so yes there's a lot of perks. I also personally love the hiking snacks which are so healthy and proportionately sized. Always love the service at REI. Especially appreciate that they have wide shoe options (at least for men, didn't check for women) and offer Big & Tall/plus size clothing options in store. Came here to look for reusable water bottles for a trip to Mexico. I found them on Amazon but decided to look local. Well they have water bottles, but wow expensive. I don't need to pay for a name like yetti or hydroflask. Give me generic at a decent price. They also didn't have the carry strap/bag we needed. They were busy today and maybe only half the people wearing masks even though they have a big sign up saying please wear one. And they even had disposable masks if you didn't have one. read more

I'm not one to leave reviews by any means, but the past few times I've come into REI i have got a bad taste in my mouth with one employee. Always seems to have a problem with customers, just overall rude in general. I came into the store today, i was returning something. she just had a bad attitude, didn't say hi or anything. The tone in her voice, the facial expressions she'd make. I was wanting to get a national park pass, and she had punched it, i just had asked to look around before i finish my check out, and she proceeds to tell me "no we are just going to do it now." Which isn't that big of a deal, it just was really rude the way she spoke & the hand gestures she had been doing. Like it bothered her i had come in, i have had this problem with her multiple times. You know how REI has such a great reputation for returns? Not so much. My family pooled together to give me cross-country skis last year, and it finally snowed enough to try them. Turns out they're skate skis, not the classic (we're novices!). They were literally used for 10 minutes, and they won't take them back because it has been beyond the 390 days, not 365. The Castleton, IN location closed early. They advertised that they close at 8:00. I arrived at 7:55 but the door was locked and the closed sign was up. Two other customers arrived after me, and they were equally frustrated. One of the customers was knocking on the door. AT one point an employee walked by the door, saw us, smiled and kept walking. I only needed to pick up an online order that I had already paid for. I wasted 20 minutes of drive time each way and the gasoline. This REI has always been great. The last couple of times have been terrible. This is because of a specific worker at this store. Her name might be Valva. I'm not sure i know it starts with a V. Two times she has been unwilling to help on returns and had a terrible rude attitude to me and my girlfriend. I had to leave the first time trying to return a jacket because she was unable to process it. I then drove all the way back 35 min and a new very nice employee had no problem doing it. My husband and I were out shopping in the Castleton area and were on the hunt for a tent for some upcoming camping trips. They have a diverse selection of outdoor gear however the tent area was pretty small and the prices were pretty steep. We did find an area where returns are resold where some of the tents looked reasonably priced however the returned items have a lot of "issues" according to the tags from previous customers. I did find some pretty cute hiking sandals on clearance that I ended up purchasing but I do find most of the items here to be out of our price range and will more than likely shop somewhere that's more within our budget. They do have great customer service and variety of goods so if you have it within your budget you should def. check out the store. read more

So excited to have REI locally after a brief time living out west! The co-op is a great a membership to have and very accessible price wise. The staff is nice and helpful and I'm blown away by how much they're doing to accommodate COVID best practices. Arrows throughout the store, controlling number of people in the store as well as popular areas such as shoes. This location is quite small for an REI, but has a small bit of most things you'd look for at REI...to clarify the things I've looked for are hydroflasks, clothing, shoes, bike gear, endurance nutrition....so just note it's a smaller location and if you want things outside those, the staff is very helpful with guiding you to online and helping you out. read more

If you want high-quality outdoor gear of any kind and would like advice and help from extremely friendly and knowledgeable staff who clearly love the outdoors themselves and use the gear they sell, REI is the place to go! I was so excited when they opened this store in Indy because before I had to wait until I was up in the Chicago area to get needed gear that I didn't want to just buy online. I've bought many pairs of hiking boots and shoes here, backpacks, clothing, tents, sleeping bags, and other camping gear as well as running and biking clothes and gear. The folks working in the shoe and backpack areas are particularly great. They know their products and are experts at fitting the gear to the person and purpose. They encourage customers to walk around the store climb up and down the fake rocks in the shoe area to make sure the boots or shoes work and fit properly for going up and down hills. They'll load up packs with weights and let you walk around the store to try out boots and loaded pack together for as long as you'd like. Yes, the gear is expensive...but it is top quality...and....they have the most amazing return policy I've ever seen anywhere. Even if you've taken a tent, boots, sleeping bag, etc. out on a week long (or longer) trip, and find it didn't meet your expectations, they will take it back no questions asked. Plus...do you really want to have cheap gear when you are a 2 day hike away from civilization? I've also bought a lot of clothes here for travel; they have quick dry lightweight clothing that is perfect for international travel when you might be without a dryer and need things that can hang dry. My absolute favorite outdoor gear and clothing store. We are members of REI and this gives us coupons, special offers and a share of the profits in the form of a gift card at year end. The staff here is enthusiastic about the products and very knowledgeable as well. We often come here for specific items, but leave with more than we thought we needed. The major sporting good stores in Indianapolis are super chain stores and I feel the staff working at them are inadequately trained and definitely under motivated. I like REI staff because they take time to explain differences in products and show the cost benefits of them. It may sound silly, but this is a comfortable store to shop in. Lots of places to sit while your co-shopper looks around. It is also a low pressure atmosphere, where you do not feel like you need to buy. My kind of store for sure! read more

REI is now my store of choice for outdoor apparel. They have a good but not outstanding selection of hiking and water shoes. Salomon is my brand of choice, and they always have a nice selection. Keen is my husband's brand of choice, and REI can be counted on to have a good selection. They have casual shoes as well, including Chacos. This is also the best place I know of in Indianapolis to get high quality backpacks, sleeping bags and camping and climbing gear. Don't forget that REI has an excellent selection of clothing, including favorites like Kuhl, Patagonia, Columbia, Arcteryx, and North Face. Its a great place to shop for casual well fitting clothes. REI: the national co-op that acts more like a local outdoors store! Could you find the same items for less if you shopped around: probably. Could you find the same level of knowledge and service at the other stores: probably not! (Except for the actual local outdoor stores.) If you are going to consider purchasing anything here, I'd strongly recommend purchasing a membership, especially since it doesn't expire and you'll frequently get discounts/coupons throughout the year. Additionally, you can get a dividend based on the amount that you've purchased in the previous year (some items don't count). Every staff member that I've interacted with has been great. If you need more help in the shoe department, I'd recommend coming during an off time (not a weekend). I've returned items from an online purchase here and it went very smoothly. read more

Great store and a significant addition to the metro Indianapolis area. REI carries higher end outdoors equipment than, say, Dick's, which is perfect fine for what it sells. There's a great selection of camping, hiking, backpacking, biking, climbing, etc. gear and clothing. It's run as a co-op so if you are a member, you get some rebate at the end of the year. The employees are attentive and most are true experts. Some responses to the negative reviews: 1) Yes, the guy who went during opening weekend where they gave away free food and gift cards had to wait in line longer. Duh. 2) No, the store is not as large or exotic as the mega stores in Denver, Seattle, etc. But let's get serious - we live in the middle of the cornfields without mountains, real rivers, real outdoor backpacking trails, etc. And we have about 1/2 the population of Seattle and Denver, and probably about 1/4 or 1/6 the targeted REI demographics (college-educated outdoor enthusiasts who are well traveled) of those cities. Frankly, I'm very (pleasantly) surprised that REI opened a store here. Be thankful for that. 3) Yes, the prices are higher than at Walmart or Dick's, but that's like comparing a BMW to a Kia and saying, "The BMW costs more." The BMW may not be for you, and that's ok. But just acknowledge that the BMW has some performance features that the Kia does not possess. A REI store is good for the city and the image of the city. Support it if you can. read more
