Skis in the room at Whistler. BC

I live in Champaign, IL thus there is nowhere close to me to wax and tune skis. I had the choice of Peoria, Chicago, St. Louis, or Indy to get my new skis waxed and tuned before I headed out on my first trip. After doing my research and making a few phone calls, I decided on Rusted Moon. I spoke directly with Ron and he was the ONLY person I spoke with out of all my options that acknowledged I was coming from 2+ hours away, and assured me he would get them done for me same day. He did not disappoint. He got two sets of skis and a snowboard done all in one day for me as promised. I watched him go through some of the process and he was very thorough. Don't wait until you get to your resort (wherever that may be) have it done before you go. It's cheaper and with someone who is WAY more experienced than some 20 year old on the mountain. Highly recommend for any skier or boarder in the area. It was worth the drive. Thanks again, Ron!

Ol' Dr. Jack Solomon in Semiotics / Pop Culture 441 professed many Signs of Life. My favorite insight: the many attempts at retail stores to increase the TPV (Time Per Visit) by each customer -- creating an environment where customers linger: with food samples (tastings even), better music, better space. All these things increase the likelihood we purchase more. I always thought that REI did the best at this... and after my visit to Rusted Moon last night I've realized that mountaineering / outdoor shops are going to inherently have a longer time per visit because, well, the outdoors are rad to be in to, & the supplies are endless. Infinite scenarios to run through in your mind that you'll tackle in the great outdoors and plan for. Now... there's no REI in Indy, so it's this hut of a mom&pop shop that is the go-to for outdoors-ness. Then, add on that they have a ski lift swing out front and a portable fire pit burning... where're the dogs & hot chocolate? They came up in Indy as the only supplier of Patagonia-brand coats inside 465. I didn't want to end up like Costanza with a noisy suit or knocking over wine bottles in a giant gortex coat, so I had to try 'em on! Crazy helpful, and knowledgeable staff (also in the shoe / boots section). Ready to accommodate, too (and even commiserate if you wince at a color or price). There is so much in this store it's unbearable not to go through it all and buy it all and have to sleep in a tent down by the river. At least I'll have a really awesome compass and camping spork!

    Thanks RMO!

I was looking for Merrell hiking shoes to replace the Vasque shoes I have been wearing for the last ten years. I have been wearing high end hiking shoes as everyday footwear since I discovered mountain trail hiking in Tucson back in 2002. Their online web site said they had a pair normally retailing for $120 on sale for $80 but it must have been online only since I could not find it in the store. This store did not carry Vasque but I had previously owned a pair of Merrell shoes and knew they were good quality and would last a long time. They offered two choices which were waterproof and not waterproof. I chose the waterproof although I liked the color of the non-waterproof better. The pair I chose were basically brown and I was hoping to get a different color since I had been wearing brown for so long. They offered two other colors, an olive green and a lighter color online but they did not appeal to me. I was hoping for a dark gray or something to match black and jeans better. Service was only so-so. Another customer and I waited in the shoe department for someone to wait on us while other employees looked at us but didn't assist us. It's not like we can help ourselves. Someone has to go in the back and grab a box and bring it out for us to try on. Eventually someone came to help me but the other customer gave up and left. Checking out was equally frustrating. Two cashiers both stuck with customers for a long time, one bickering over a return and not getting a full credit. This is where other stores have a separate counter for these issues so customers who want to simply pay and go can do so without a long wait and no one getting checked out. Standing in line or waiting to be helped while multiple other employees seem to be available to help is frustrating.

While it's smaller than the massive outdoor stores, it was organized, well-stocked, and has a great selection of clothing, gear, and gifts. One of the first things you see is the beloved aquarium - always the highlight for the kids and what I remember from similar stores growing up. Next, what we really came for. We visited to see Santa with our toddler and had a wonderful time. You can pre-register to ensure your spot for a FREE photo, and those that walk in can wait in line once those that registered in advance are through. I saw everything from families in matching PJs to couples with their dogs and I was all about it. Once they snap the photo, you get a free printout and can opt to purchase additional if desired. They even gave a festive little wooden frame, which is currently hanging on our fridge and bringing me joy. This setup to see Santa was memorable, efficient, and perfect for a wiggly toddler. We'll be back in the future!
