This place is great! Just recently found it, but this Broad Ripple outdoorsy shop has been around for quite some time. There's a front and back entrance, the back has 1-2 reserved parking spots. It's a fairly small place but packed with stuff: sleeping bags to keep you warm in the mountains, apparel from brands like Patagonia, water bottles, candles that smell amazing, camping chairs, knives, and more! The customer service is out of this world. Multiple folks working, all really friendly. When you ask to see something from the case, they answer questions about the product t but don't try to sell it - thank god, that is annoying and it's nice to not have that pressure. Every Christmas I shop at Rusted Moon for a few gifts for my husband. We both love the outdoors - hiking, camping, kayaking etc and this store has everything we need to fuel those passions. Knew nothing about the brand before walking in. Felt confident I made the right purchase as I walked out. If you love the outdoors, this is your local gem! I wanted to get a new sleeping bag for an upcoming camping trip so before going on Amazon or up to REI, I decided to check out Rusted Moon. We need to support our locals! I've been to the store a few times and know the staff is super knowledgeable. I checked their website (which is lean) before going over just to see if I could get an idea for what they had in stock. And what do you know? Sleeping bags were 30% off this week! Perfect timing. There is a separate room in the front of the store where the tents, sleeping bags, and camping chairs are located. It is a small room but can still browse around with a couple other customers. I am car camping for now but would ultimately like to do some backpacking. I don't think there's ever been a time that we don't come into Rusted Moon when we're in the neighborhood. We frequent their neighbors, Just Pop In! and often walk our dog on the Monon so this is a great stop in for us. They always have deals going on and the staff is awesome. They truly care that you're getting the right gear for your trip or that something you really want is in stock and they give great advice and recommendations for their products. I think the prices are a little high but at the same time, I don't expect the same service/one-on-one time as I would if I went to an REI/Dick's Sporting Goods. Plus it helps to shop local! I'm not a gear head when it comes to the outdoors. I use things I have had for decades. But that's the thing, this is the place where you buy that gear. Yes, it's expensive by comparison. However, if I'm doing hundreds of miles in my boots, then I want them to last and not kill my feet. You can get the top of the line gear here, sometimes on super sale as the season ends. The staff are super chill as you would expect. They are knowledgeable, approachable, and not judgy if you have questions. They light the fire outside that just invites you in. I more recently bought a pair of Kühl jeans that I'll have for a very long time. They were 50% off so to me it was perfect. If you are local and need gear for an upcoming trip, this you your place. The employment application here must really emphasize outdoor experience because everyone seems pretty familiar with local and regional spots for camping, usually with some good tips. They always keep a fire going out on the patio and that smoke smell kind of takes you on a mental camping trip as you enter the store. They pretty much have everything you need to enjoy the quiet sports outdoors. Excellent outdoor clothing, Backpacks, tents, boots, socks, all types of gear, boats, and maps and stickers. Being in Broadripple is super cool because you can check out other nice places in the village after you buy that cool camping shirt. My only wish is that this place could be located on the river so you could just hang out on the patio and watch kayakers go downstream. Speaking of which, they do offer free trials of the boats and a boat ramp is only a few blocks away. If your not sure about a gear issue, or you wonder about what you might need before you actually need it, the staff here can help. I bought our Rooftop gear rack here about the same time they opened 25 years ago and they have helped me size it up to 3 different vehicles since. I live in Champaign, IL thus there is nowhere close to me to wax and tune skis. I had the choice of Peoria, Chicago, St. Louis, or Indy to get my new skis waxed and tuned before I headed out on my first trip. After doing my research and making a few phone calls, I decided on Rusted Moon. I spoke directly with Ron and he was the ONLY person I spoke with out of all my options that acknowledged I was coming from 2+ hours away, and assured me he would get them done for me same day. He did not disappoint. He got two sets of skis and a snowboard done all in one day for me as promised. I watched him go through some of the process and he was very thorough. Don't wait until you get to your resort (wherever that may be) have it done before you go. It's cheaper and with someone who is WAY more experienced than some 20 year old on the mountain. In today's world, it's easy to order everything from Amazon (guilty as charged) and forget why we shop local. Let me tell you a tale of why you should still visit these specialty shops... I'm taking a 1000 mile road trip this week and needed a roof rack system to help transport all my gear. I visited REI, BGI, Performance Bike, and called around a few other places. No one place had all the parts I needed, so I ordered my roof rack system from Amazon. Although I bought the quality Thule rack system suggested by the local pros, I decided I would get the "discount" Amazon basket for the mount. Prime shipping means guaranteed 2 day delivery...unless the item is back ordered...which was the case for most of my stuff. I finally received everything after about a week, I got the rack installed, and set off to install the basket. After about an hour, I discovered that the basket was defective and couldn't be installed (suddenly it made sense why this was a warehouse deal with Amazon- which means it had been opened and returned previously). Since we are leaving in 2 days, I started calling everywhere. Finally, the bike line in Broad Ripple told me to call Rusted Moon. Ding ding, why didn't I think I'd trying that. Although they didn't have the Thule basket I asked for, he told me they had the Yakima load Warrior basket (a different quality name brand) in stock. I left immediately to get it. That's not a good enough reason to shop local? Oh, ok. Let me continue. After I paid for the basket, I was asked if I wanted it installed. At REI, installation was $40. Look, I'm an engineer, so I can't throw good money away when I'm fully capable. But I asked how much it is at Rusted Moon because I was frustrated and tired of installing by myself. ITS FREE. that's right, all major products and morning accessories are installed for free with purchase. We walked the basket out to my car and installed it together in about 20 minutes. Let this be a lesson as to why you should still shop local. Shop small. And shop Rusted Moon. read more

Ol' Dr. Jack Solomon in Semiotics / Pop Culture 441 professed many Signs of Life. My favorite insight: the many attempts at retail stores to increase the TPV (Time Per Visit) by each customer -- creating an environment where customers linger: with food samples (tastings even), better music, better space. All these things increase the likelihood we purchase more. I always thought that REI did the best at this... and after my visit to Rusted Moon last night I've realized that mountaineering / outdoor shops are going to inherently have a longer time per visit because, well, the outdoors are rad to be in to, & the supplies are endless. Infinite scenarios to run through in your mind that you'll tackle in the great outdoors and plan for. Now... there's no REI in Indy, so it's this hut of a mom&pop shop that is the go-to for outdoors-ness. Then, add on that they have a ski lift swing out front and a portable fire pit burning... where're the dogs & hot chocolate? They came up in Indy as the only supplier of Patagonia-brand coats inside 465. I didn't want to end up like Costanza with a noisy suit or knocking over wine bottles in a giant gortex coat, so I had to try 'em on! Crazy helpful, and knowledgeable staff (also in the shoe / boots section). Ready to accommodate, too (and even commiserate if you wince at a color or price). There is so much in this store it's unbearable not to go through it all and buy it all and have to sleep in a tent down by the river. Negatives: parking in this part of Broad Ripple can be awful. Small store is kinda cramped. Positives: They sell just about everything you could need for your outdoor hobbies. Staff is helpful and friendly, and they have people who are enthusiasts staffing the place. They will take the time to answer your questions prior to making a large purchase, and do so honestly. Brochures and posters for local hiking and paddling groups are posted so you can get in touch with others involved in the hobby. Cute dogs are around the store, there's a swing out front, and a fire pit. The room up front sells packs and bags of all kinds, the central area has camping goodies like stoves, utensils, and water carriers. Along the wall are sleeping bags and more packs, and they sell climbing gear (carabiners, harnesses, ropes) as well as knifes. The back is dedicated to paddling (kayaks, paddles, PFDs, dry bags) and shoes (simple flip flops to $200+ hiking boots, Smart Wools). I tried on a pair of Vibram Five Fingers there, and I've made several purchases at their AWESOME end of season sales. The center of the store sells outerwear and clothing. Some of the brands include Marmot, Patagonia, Keen, Mountain Hardwear, Prana, and others. Located just off the Monon Trail near BRICS (ice cream), Plump's Last Shot (bar), and Broad Ripple Brew Pub...even if you don't live right in the area a drive down will be worth your while. read more

I went to rusted moon looking for some new winter gear. I was pleasantly surprised to see an abundance of employees waiting to help with my search. The store is pretty small but there were still 4-5 employees to make sure everyone got some attention. I was even offered a beverage! They also have a shop in the back where they can service your skis/snowboard. Toward the end of the season they started to have some clearance deals, but if it's an item they think will sell (helmets) it will stay at full price. They carry good brands though so even if uou pay too much at least you won't end up with a lemon. Tldr: good gear and good service but you'll probably pay full price. read more

Searching for best carrier system for our 2 Perception 9.5 Tribe Kayaks to fit on our Acadia factory installed crossbars. Called, talked to Jax who was super helpful, answering our endless questions as we didn't know what we didn't know! Drove to their store, the Yakima BigStack kayak carrier system was in stock thankfully. Jax and the store staff were again extremely helpful. We purchased this carrier system, a few extra accessories, Jax installed them on our vehicle, giving us great tips in loading, securing and transporting our two kayaks and we could not be more impressed and pleased with such great service!!! We will be back soon to purchase storage accessories and I am sure shop for other great outdoor gear. I own two pairs of Vibram Five Fingers, and I got both of them here. Ordering shoes that conform to each toe and portion of your foot online doesn't work well, and yet I don't know many stores around here who carry VFFs. This place has them seasonally. The staff knows what they're talking about, and they don't mind that I take an hour or two of in-store deliberation before a purchase. Though this is not a bargain-hunter's paradise, they do discount equipment near the end of the season. Also, since this is a relatively small place, their offerings have a distinct seasonality in their availability; once they've sold the last of the balaclavas in the spring, there won't be any more until next season. This obviously isn't ideal if you're planning a trip up Mt. Everest in June and need to outfit yourself, or whatever. I love you, Rusted Moon....but sometimes I need the consistent smorgasbord one only gets from the internet. read more

We are so thankful that this locally owned shop is in our neighborhood. The assistance that they gave would have never happened in a big box store. They genuinely care about their customers.
