I was looking for Merrell hiking shoes to replace the Vasque shoes I have been wearing for the last ten years. I have been wearing high end hiking shoes as everyday footwear since I discovered mountain trail hiking in Tucson back in 2002. Their online web site said they had a pair normally retailing for $120 on sale for $80 but it must have been online only since I could not find it in the store. This store did not carry Vasque but I had previously owned a pair of Merrell shoes and knew they were good quality and would last a long time. They offered two choices which were waterproof and not waterproof. I chose the waterproof although I liked the color of the non-waterproof better. The pair I chose were basically brown and I was hoping to get a different color since I had been wearing brown for so long. They offered two other colors, an olive green and a lighter color online but they did not appeal to me. I was hoping for a dark gray or something to match black and jeans better. Service was only so-so. Another customer and I waited in the shoe department for someone to wait on us while other employees looked at us but didn't assist us. It's not like we can help ourselves. Someone has to go in the back and grab a box and bring it out for us to try on. Eventually someone came to help me but the other customer gave up and left. Checking out was equally frustrating. Two cashiers both stuck with customers for a long time, one bickering over a return and not getting a full credit. This is where other stores have a separate counter for these issues so customers who want to simply pay and go can do so without a long wait and no one getting checked out. Standing in line or waiting to be helped while multiple other employees seem to be available to help is frustrating.

Bean makes a great toiletry bag. They didn't have any in stock when I visited the store, so I ordered one online. I got it today, and it might be the best toiletry bag I've ever had! It's so roomy yet compact, and the quality is great. Even though I didn't find the specific thing I was looking for in this Castleton store, there were lots of neat things, like outdoor gear, backpacks, and even kayaks! The store wasn't as big as I expected it to be, but they packed a lot into a little space.

Spring colors were everywhere. I encountered several clerks who asked if I needed help. The check out area is in the back of the store, which I found a bit odd. There's a front and back entrance, the back has 1-2 reserved parking spots. It's a fairly small place but packed with stuff: sleeping bags to keep you warm in the mountains, apparel from brands like Patagonia, water bottles, candles that smell amazing, camping chairs, knives, and more! The customer service is out of this world. Multiple folks working, all really friendly. When you ask to see something from the case, they answer questions about the product t but don't try to sell it - thank god, that is annoying and it's nice to not have that pressure. They sell quality items so their sales folk don't really have to hustle like that. Anyways, very pleasant experience!

Caveat - I HATE shopping and I HATE raincoats - so was not looking forward to the trip. However, Jocelyn made our shopping experience painless - she was knowledgeable and very friendly. She showed me the options and explained how each were different. She allowed us to chat but checked back frequently enough that we felt taken care of. Raincoat and a sweet water bottle carrier secured - perfect for our hikes, trips, and concert season. Is it cheap? Nope. But I feel you get what you pay for. My hubs has had his same North Face rain jacket for almost 15 years, and he swears by North Face rain gear for the quality. Jocelyn also explained that all of their products are guaranteed against manufacturers defects for life - so you just have to bring it in and they will replace it. Sweet. Also, while it might be boring to some, I like that the styles and colors never really go out of style with tNF. I have had most of my tNF pieces since college and they are still kicking (shout out to my first Denali!). Of note, if it has been a minute since you have visited The North Face in the Fashion Mall, they are now in a smaller space upstairs - no longer beside the Apple Store space on the first floor.

You can learn about tying flies and buy all the supplies. You can learn about and outfit yourself for all the different types of fishing. And they also have everything you need to organize all that stuff. There are two lovely dogs who and usually there to greet people, tails wagging and so friendly. They make going to the shop fun! They offer gift certificates, which is a great thing for Father's Day and Birthdays. Most importantly, the people there are very knowledgeable and helpful. I always feel like we learn something and it never feels like they are rushing you to wait on someone else. Of course, we also love to support local so I try to spend here when I have a need.

While I was there, I noticed that majority of the shoe stores had on display two adidas shoes that one simply cannot see in cali-the thriple white ultra boost, and the NMD's. Thinking to myself that the only size in stock were giant size-which is normal for the shoes-I was a bit pessimistic. However when asked to check the size in stock (8 and 8.5), I know... I have girly foot size, I was suprised that they had them! So, in effort to stock up on some hyped up shoes, I purchased three triple white ultra boosts (me, my wife, and sis in law) and one white nmd. All in all, champs, carried the shoes that other stores in the same mall did not carry. Likewise, the staff working at champs were easy to deal with and did not pressure me to quickly purchase my shoes. Thanks Champs!
