Goodman's is not what it used to be. I was shopping there yesterday for a pair of comfortable pair of street shoes good for doing a lot of walking in. . The service was terrible. The clerk said he didn't need to measure my foot Just tell him my size and he would bring out what I liked. He sat down on the stool and helped put on a few shoes with a shoehorn. He went back to the storeroom to get another size and then stood by me watching me as I put on the other selections myself. Then he told me one of the pair of shoes fit. It was obvious the sides of the shoes had a gap between my foot and the inside the side of the shoe. I won't be back. Poor service at what I remember a quality shop. The read more

I do not enjoy writing negative review's especially local and family owned but when I feel like I was a ghost in your store that hurts and doesn't feel nice. I walked in and there was a female worker helping a young lady with shoes and 3 men standing at the counter talking. I sadly wasn't greeted like I'm used to and I went to pick up a men's shoe and wasn't asked if I needed help with anything so I turned around and walked past the 3 men just chit chatting and left with out a goodbye either or a "was there's something specific you were looking for?" This store moved in the recent year or so and I feel as if the men's selection has drastically dropped and it looks like the customer service has as well I always say support local. From one business to another, not greeting a customer that walks in because your too busy chatting is the quickest way to lose a repeat customer because this shows or lack of showing the willingness to acknowledge someone walking in your store is an instant failure on running a business that revolves around people. read more

I popped into Goodman's Saturday while doing errands in Nora. My intention was to "look" at what they had in inventory - specifically Birkenstocks. Sue greeted and assisted me. I asked to try a few pairs and we were striking out in my size. Sue made a couple of suggestions I was reluctant to try but I'm so glad I did! She is one of the best sales persons I've ever encountered - I have a very long history of sales and consider myself a good judge. I ended up buying two pairs of sandals (one pair was the Birkenstock Papillos I thought would look "frumpy" on but they're SUPER CUTE and comfortable) and my first pair of Naot sandals. You know there is such truth in "You Get What You Pay For"!!! I stopped into Goodman's yesterday knowing they carry Vionic brand shoes and realizing how many other incredibly supportive brands they carry. As usual greeted at the door by Hank the owners dog and asked several times by at least three people if they could be of assistance. I knew what I was there for and the owner advised I don't think I have that in a half size and brings out two other sizes of shoe. I really didn't want to try anything on I knew the size needed in that brand and just wanted to get them and go, but what I got instead was Service, Exceptional Service, with a whole lot of compassion on the side. I told her I had just found out I was Bone on Bone in my left knee and had just had a cortisone injection earlier in the week. She moved in full force having me try on multiple shoes to see if it felt better for me to give me more comfort and stability. I was almost ready to leave advising I was headed to Dicks Sporting Goods for a pair of HOKAS. She said what we carry HOKAS! I thought the other wall was just men's shoes. She took me over and spent I have no idea how much time with me getting the right shoe fitted for me!!!! AMAZING!!!! That is what we call the LOST ART of CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! I was hesitant to visit as I prefer shopping on-line, with no personal interaction. When I finally entered, I was greeted, asked if I wanted assistance and then left alone to wander, with no hovering salesperson. If quality shoes are important, THIS IS THE PLACE! All of the shoes offered are excellent, comfortable and supportive. If you can't wear those cheap, trendy shoes without regret, come visit Goodman Shoes. I'm traditionally a Keen owner but wanted something different and the options here were better than Amazon because they were only the quality brands. Of course, I price checked and compared every pair with the on-line giant and was very pleased to see that nothing here was more expensive and occasionally even less. When I finally decided what I wanted to try on, the sales people were all very helpful and educated about the pros and cons of each brand and style. Enlightening! Stopped by to see if they had shoes for my 4 and 6 year old. I was pleasantly surprised upon entering to discover the wide variety of shoes they carry for everyone in the family. Staff were friendly and great with kids! Patty helped both kids pick out shoes they loved and made sure they even ran down the aisle to see how they liked them. Goodman's has a reputation for being THE place to go for comfortable shoes. I have been there on several occasions and have honestly had mixed experiences. I do adore the selection of Dansko, Keen, Teva and Timberland shoes. In fact, I bought my hands-down favorite pair of Timberland pull-on ankle boots here last year - at a deep discount I might add! The sale racks are a must. Many of the brands Goodman's carries are pricey, so it's worth looking through all the boxes of marked-down shoes...you never know what you'll find. Where I've been less than pleased with this Indy icon of sorts is in regard to the customer service. On once instance more or less ignored because a regular pair of customers - obviously well-to-do - sauntered in and began asking for things right and left. Our once attentive salesperson pretty much abandoned us at that point... Another time, a much anticipated special order from Goodman's arrived with what was clearly a previously worn shoe in the pair, with the wear being so obvious the shoes didn't even look like a matched set. Granted, the store handled the return very promptly and graciously, but we wondered why the shoes weren't checked before being shipped to us in the first place. My final review, though, is three stars because of, again, the selection here and as I stated at the beginning of this review, I have had some good experiences here - consistency would just be nice. read more

I shopped at Goodman shoes for years when I lived in Indianapolis for myself and both my parents who had unusual size shoes (my Mom was 9 1/2 narrow and my Dad was size 15). The quality of lines they carry is excellent and I'm wearing about a 4 year old pair of Dansko sandles right now but I have bought Ugg slippers and Merrell hiking boots amongst many other shoes over the years. I live in NC now and called back to give the store the business for my birthday gift of new slippers from my Mom. I encourage others to support local business like Goodman Shoes. I went in and saw the boot I wanted. Only it was a size 7. I asked the associate whether they had any larger than a size 7 (Mens). He simply said, "No." He didn't offer that they might be able to get them, or that they're just out of stock. I'm a small guy, and I didn't even know men's feet could be that small...why does Goodman's only stock this boot in a size 7? And why (evidently) are they not able to get a size 9 if they stock a size 7? read more

I'm basing this review solely on customer service, or the lack thereof. I walked in and two staff members working at the counter barely even acknowledged me even after me smiling at them. There was no "welcome" or later on another guy walked by and barely said hi as he was working with another customer. I value customer service and even when a business is busy, staff can still be friendly and welcoming and I did not get that impression at all. That experience made me leave. In addition the prices are very high though the quality looks great. I would have stayed longer and looked around more but no one seemed to care, therefore they wouldn't care to have my business. read more

The best place for kid shoes! Really, they are fantastic here, for the whole family. On our last visit, we bought the same pair of shoes twice... my husband bought them and then I bought them again. I ordered shoes from them through Amazon. I had to return the shoes. A UPS store stole my return. UPS said that the seller needed to call UPS. The seller told me they could do nothing. $100 gone. Police report filed, but would have been nice if Goodman's would have taken a few minutes to assist me. They carry the brand of shoes that I like, so that's a plus. One time I went in in the evening and thought it was closed because of the dark windows, but when I did go in I was immediately greeted by a very accommodating and friendly woman who took great care of me. When I told her about the windows she instantly wanted to do something about, because it turns out she was the owner! Later, I had ordered some shoes and got into a car wreck shortly after. I called them to let them know I would not be able to pick up the shoes for a while and they ended up holding them for over a month! They even offered to mail them to me free of charge. I declined, but the service was above and beyond what I expected from a shoe store. The only downside was that I thought they were closed that one time with the dark windows. The quality of individual service, expertise, honesty, and meaning of community will never be surpassed (not to mention the most amazing inventory of the best footware in Indianapolis). "Major", "Big Box", "off-price" department stores, as well as Amazon, are not worth the perceived notion (not real) of unlimited choices and serious discounts. As we all know it closes at 7 which by the way is quite early for a tuesday night. They made it VERY well known they were closing shortly. I went to go check out their sale. For everything there being quite expensive the people working were very very rude and hadn't kept very nice. As soon as i went to leave they locked the door behind me (before they even closed) quite bothered by that one. I was in and out in 3 minutes and the entire encounter with this store was infuriating. As a person who works, we all know you keep the doors open until the last customer leaves but you do turn off the open sign. I wear orthotics, and the sales people at Goodman's are very knowledgeable about what sorts of shoes work best for me. If you want cheap shoes, this is not the place for you. They offer top quality shoes for people, with very excellent service. They do get busy at times but I have not ever been ignored. I am willing to go ask for help if I am not waited on at places, but have yet to have this happen there. I also am a "regular" as I do go there to buy all my shoes. They carry an excellent selection of very high quality shoes. I cannot say enough good things about them. I would have had many more foot problems had the staff at Goodman's not helped me out. My foot doctor was so impressed with the shoes I was/am wearing and asked me where I purchased them. I really wanted to support Goodman's. I would rather spend my money local and support a family owned business, but dealing with the sales associate and Mr. Goodman, the general manager, was a real hassle. I came to Goodman's to buy a pair of Blundstone boots. I know they have to order them and was prepared for that. Three weeks ago I came in to try on a pair to get the right sizing and let the associate know I would come back for the purchase. Upon leaving the store I said I would come back and the associate made a comment about me buying them on-line. I was taken aback, and told him I would buy them there because I like to support my local business. I did come back to get the boots. When I came in the staff said that they had been selling a lot of these boots, but apparently no one really knows how to size the shoes. The staff attitude of indifference was surprising. Apparently they must be doing quite well to have an "oh well, we cant quite figure it out" attitude. The woman who assisted in this mess frankly did not even want to order a pair, she was reluctant to do it because if they didn't fit she would be "stuck with the shoes".
