We had first tried their chocolates when we received it as a gift with purchase from Jackson Hole Jewelry and they were amazing! So much, we asked them to do our wedding favors and they did not disappoint! Oscar, the owner and chocolatier, spent a generous amount of time with us walking through all the flavors and how he crafted each one. He helped us carefully craft a box to take home so we could try all the flavors we wanted before deciding which ones we wanted for our guests. We chose the raspberry and Wyoming Whiskey. Mr. Ortega- You don't know me, but our paths did cross this am. I was trying to park in your lot, in order to come in and purchase some items from your store. While pulling in and trying to turn around to park, a man immediately honked at me. I then parked. And as I was walking in, I will admit- I did want to find out who this person was driving the van that felt the need to honk at a customer, and so on the way in I tapped on your window. But you would not engage, b/c you were talking on your phone, pulling in talking on your phone, with one hand, honking with the other. Upon entering the store, I come to find out that the person driving that van was you. Once you entered the store, I believe you wanted to know why I was so angry. So let's clear up a few things. 1) For a man that fancies himself a JH local, um, locals don't honk. To say that Atelier Ortega's chocolates are good would be to miss the point. These chocolates are otherworldly: otherworldly in the Platonic sense, meaning each flavor nearly perfectly embodies the flavor from which Oscar Ortega took his inspiration. As Willy Wonka would say, "his snazberries taste like snazberries." With truffles such as Goat Milk Caramel and Cabernet Reduction, he sets the bar pretty high. A friend of ours, a food critic in Jackson known locally as "Crumbs" actually fed-exed a box of these magnificent artisan chocolates to us while we were on our honeymoon. In short: huge disappointment. We crisscrossed Yellowstone and Grand Teton for a week. Our hotels were in 4 towns outside of parks, but we dined inside and outside. And beside Lake Hotel Dining Room, Atelier Ortega was the only place pre-selected before the trip. Reviews were so enthusiastic, that I have chosen A.O. to be a final accord, an all-out breakfast at the last day. My wife and our friend are ladies with discriminate taste, and I wanted something indeed very special to put an exclamation mark to our trip. To catch our afternoon flights in SLC we had to hit the door at the very opening time, 8am. And we did. After all our hotel was just 0.5mi away. We were not only the first customers, but had the place for ourselves. For cool Saturday morning in resort town out of season it's nothing out of ordinary, I guess. Nice room with 5 tables, spectacular displays of various treats, and walls lined by Ortega's awards and prizes. We had spent few minutes buying from outstanding selection of chocolates and pastries. Strangely enough, they price chocolates in quantities of 6 and12 (24 and 36 for bigger purchases), but have small boxes to fit maybe 9. No padding to keep those expensive treats in place, either. Then we had asked for our breakfast: 3 orders of crepes and 3 cappuccinos. At 8:10am we were ready. There were 3 women in the kitchen, and no other customers (one guy has stopped for his morning coffee 20 minutes later). How long you think it takes to make 9 crepes in specialized eatery? (3 per order) We had to wait for 25 minutes! I am not kidding. Finally I started pacing the floor, and mentioned to staff that we are getting late. Did it help or not? I don't know. Food presentation was just great. Berries galore. And crepes were very good indeed, even though we would have preferred less filling inside. But! The plates were not warmed beforehand, which in combination with cold fillings made crepes barely warm. For such expensive outlet it's unacceptable. And my wife got one of the crepes burned on one corner so she couldn't finish it. We always want to have our coffee at the same time as desert, which is not very customary in our country. So we were extremely pleased when the girl at the counter when taking our order had asked when do we want our coffee. That was a sign of classy place, no doubt, we thought. But did we get it for real? Nope. I was finishing my first crepe when cappuccinos finally arrived. And the final straw to add insult to the injury was the tip. I am always glad to tip, and try to pay more if I'm uncertain. That day I was paying at the time of order, which came up to $107 (I told you, I tried hard to make my ladies happy). A.O. uses tablet-based cash register, which had given me an option to add 15% or 20% tip. I was confused for a moment, since most places won't ask for a tip when you order at the counter. Anyway, my brain was not awake yet and I hit 15% icon. Only next day I have realized that I've really made a fool of myself, giving the tip for all the sweets we bought to go, too. Trick or no trick, but they've got me all right. To summarize, I won't call A.O. a tourist trap. I would say it's very expensive and pleasant tourist trap, with rather shaky service, but which undoubtedly sells excellent chocolate and pastries. That earned them the 3rd star in the rating I am giving them. read more

The most amazing chocolate/dessert/coffee/espresso place in town! Oscar Ortega's creations and confections are the best! His workshop makes the best bon bons (Sweet Orange Carmel Sea Salt) and beautiful desserts (Mexican Chocolate Cake). However, I have to say my absolute most favorite item is the French Macaroons!!!! The vanilla & raspberry ones are to die for, they are so delicate and full of flavor! This bakery very much so exceeded my expectations. I gave Atelier Ortega five stars due to the fact that the flavors were exquisite. The meat quiche tho took some time was flawless. The quiche came with a salad drizzled in a timeless balsamic reduction that was sweet and had a slight zing of an after taste. Another perfectly crafted meal would be their sweet crapes. I personally recommend any crape with a lavender gelato. Not only was the idea of gelato on a crape genius but the gelato itself was flawless and perfect. Another favorite of mine would be... their macaroons! Their macaroons came in several delightful flavors that swept my taste buds off in to a magnificent world of flavor and inspiring presentation. Speaking of inspiring presentations Atelier Ortega has a wide and fantastic range of beautiful bon-bons! These bon-bons are colorful and eye catching. Some bon-bons were creamy and others were tart some were milk chocolate and some were dark either way they all had bold delicious flavors. Ortega has a new beautiful retail store, Coco Love, that serves coffee as well as chocolates in downtown jackson. just opened in mid sept and we've been twice. Chocolates are wonderful but what's difficult to understand is why they would spend all that money on a store and understaff it. Both times the poor, overworked wait person has been overwhelmed and customers have walked out because of the wait. Spend some money on more staff or your place will be vacant soon. read more

We were so excited to try the crepes here. The dessert crepe was amazing but the proscuitto and Brie crepe was so salty. It was inedible. After we waited for nearly 30 minutes for our food we didn't dare ask them to remake it. The truffles that my husband had looked fantastic. So this place is as good as it gets. Someone from town recommended us to visit this place, because it is definitely off the beaten path. Go here for breakfast, they make some killer coffee drinks (the pastry chef is a world renowned chocolatier, so the Mexican spiced coffee was wonderful and the mocha was delicious.) We got breakfast here, even though we know this is a chocolate place, the egg and cheese croissant was one of the best I have ever had. Buttery and flaky crust with made to order egg and cheese filling. YUMMY. The display case is very enticing. Couldn't help but buy a box of chocolates, all were great. In case you were wondering, they have a "fancy" shop in the middle of town called Coco Love, but all the baking and magic happens back at Ortega.
