Overally service: This is my favorite hair salon in many years. Great location! Easy to find.. You simply look At The Top and you will find it. Im always greeted with a smile, offered a beverage immediately and I always leavewith the best experience. My hair dresser: Alessandra has been my hair dresser for about two years and she is simply the best! She gives you her undivided attention, has excellent follow- through and truly cares about every part of the process. Even a week later she has shot me a quick note asking if I am happy. She has helped me go from dry brittle hair to shinney, soft, lucious hair. What makes her so great is that she takes the time to ask what you want, checks in at each part of the process and even takes the time (while the dye settles) to teach a better process ( such as a drying technique, curling technique or even review how you use your products). THE LONG SEARCH: I am reunited with my favorite stylist ever at my favorite salon. Many, many moons and hairstyles ago (even before the dawn of Yelp), I kept my hair very, very short and the previous owner of At The Top was great at that cut. I also loved the clean, naturally-lit, almost Zen-like uncluttered feel of the salon. But I grew my hair out and drifted away... Sometime later I started playing with hair color. Since I was a beginner and mostly experimenting, I didn't realize that I had lucked into a brilliant and talented colorist, Wendy. I just took it for granted. Now I'm at the stage where coloring my hair is more than just a whim to indulge. I'm getting more than a few "super-blond" (my code word for gray) hairs that I need camouflaged and/or concealed. Hair color is no longer a whim - it's a necessity. I tried to find Wendy at the Tiburon salon again - but not only was she not there, the entire salon was gone. I've tried probably two dozen or more colorists in the past seven or eight years. The only stylist who came close to being as good as Wendy was someone I found by asking a stranger with gorgeous hair who did her color. That was a nice phase, but after a while, I found the two and a half hours of driving back and forth to the her salon in Sonoma to be too much. The whole time, I kept thinking about Wendy and wishing I knew how to find her. I'd given up - when I literally ran into her on the street and learned she was working right around the corner at At The Top. Needless to say, I booked and appointment as soon as I could. Both the salon and the stylist are as good as I remembered. THE SALON: I absolutely love how immaculately clean and organized At The Top is. Salons are almost always jumbled with shelves of products that they push you to buy. And then there are the attempts at "décor". It can feel claustrophobic. There is none of that at At The Top. Not that is noticeable, anyway. Elegantly sleek stations, simple large mirrors and a wall of windows are what you notice. THE STYLIST: And I can't say enough about the job Wendy does with color. She really has a gift. (Her own hair is amazing, too.) She is the only person I know who does balayage - correctly. I went to other stylists who claimed that was what they were doing, but my hair would come out as if I had weird stripes. Wendy was trained in balayage in Europe and I wish she would train more people here at how to do it right. She also uses foils and just straight color - adjusting technique depending on what is needed. I always just follow her advice - because she KNOWS color. She's also very concerned that I'm happy with my hair - i.e. her work - and will give tips on how I can manage it between visits. She almost sees Hair As Art that is always a work in progress. THE END: So, my Yelp review happy ending... Many years, many salons, and many stylists later, my hair finally looks amazing again and I can't wait for my next visit to see Wendy at At The Top's sun-filled salon. read more

At the Top Salon is a wonderful place to get a haircut. I used to go to the cheaper franchises, like Great Clips and Supercuts, followed by a couple $10 to $15 range salons, but nothing compares to the quality haircuts that I get at At the Top Salon. Sure it costs a little more, but the money is totally worth not having to deal with the frustration after receiving a bad haircut from one of those cheaper places. I guess the old adage is true, "You get what you pay for!" That said, Carmen is an excellent choice. She's funny, talkative and very attentive. I've been going to At the Top for several years now. I have long tight curly hair and lots of it and Jimmy is by far the best I've ever had (which is saying a lot). I usually get a trim and color, which consists of highlights, low lights, and a base color. He knows just how to work with my curl so that when it grows out I barely notice the roots for up to three months of outgrowth. Yes, that's right...I go 3-4 months in between visits and it's not til month 4 that I feel I need to get in to see him. He also makes my color look so natural that people actually think I have light brown/blond hair when in reality I have very dark brown hair. I love Jimmy so much I travel from South San Jose all the way to Mill Valley. That's 3-4 hours of travel time. I also love that Jimmy works with my hair for the long term. We set goals and gradually work towards them so it's not a sudden change (my personal preference) and looks natural. For example, I've been trying to get back to a darker color so Jimmy will work over the next few sessions on working with some of my natural color while gradually easing off the blond highlights. The transition is smooth and seamless. He also did my hair for my wedding using my natural curl. It was stunning! I got so many compliments on it and I felt like it was ME. Most hairdressers would try to straighten it or make me look out of character. But Jimmy listened and gave me a look that matched who I am. The Salon itself is like a family. Hair stylist Alessandra Nociaro has worked wonders for my hair and my image. She rethought a tired old look and put a fresh face on my professional appearance. I have been seeing her for more than a year. I find my conversations with her to be warm and engaging. The salon is light and airy and offers a view on downtown Mill Valley, a charming little village at the southern tip of Marin. Alessandra does my color as well as cuts and is a gifted colorist. I highly recommend her and the salon to anyone wanting to get a new take on their public image. I have happily entrusted my hair to Tomm Dedini for over 4 years and he never ceases to amaze me at the transformation I get every time I go in. And ever since going to Tomm, I get a lot of compliments on my hair, for the cut, color and highlights. And he has done the Brazilian straightening on my hair 3 times now and I love the way it has transformed my hair into a tamer, easier to style version of itself! He is truly an artist with hair, trained in Beverly Hills, having worked on the stars and owning his own salon in LA, we are so lucky to have him up here in Northern California. I especially love his current location, "At the Top" which is a beautiful salon, with wonderful people working there. I went on line to find a reasonably priced salon, for a haircut. I came across this site where you can search for local businesses and those businesses can advertise on this site. It's called Locality. I found At the Top Salon's page, on this site and it stated that a woman's haircut was $40. YAY! So, I called to schedule and appointment and the women said it would be $70! I told her that the website said a woman's haircut was $40 and that I only wanted an inch or so cut off the ends and she said it would still be $70 and that $40 was for a kids haircut!!!????? Ummm....NO, your advertisement on this website said nothing about kids haircuts, anywhere, and clearly stated that a woman's haircut was $40. She just repeated, "its $70." Really?! This is a review for the business ethics and Jeanie at the front desk. I purchased a Groupon for a cut, partial highlights, etc from Tomm, I guess. I did not know that he alone sponsored the Groupon and the business was not associated nor responsible for honoring the Groupon. So imagine my horror when I called to schedule, which I had to do a month after a cancellation due to illness, that Tomm was retiring. I had a put in my stomach that my $60 plus dollar Groupon was going down the drain.... BUT Jeanie (sp?) asked me specific information about the Groupon and I explained what I purchased. I was ready to get the "sorry you will have to work that out with Tomm or Groupon. Being disabled haircuts are painful, I had done research and confirmed he would allow me to move around and make an appointment time that works for a single Mom and the thought of getting screwed over and having to fight or file anything is simply too much. HOWEVER, the business, is honoring my purchased Groupon (I doubt they are getting paid) and agreed to see me and provide me the services I ordered from Tomm by another stylist! Hooray! They could not have been nicer and because of this I asked to add another service! If I remember I will post a before and after photo of my new style! I hope I get a great stylist! I bought a Groupon voucher for a 1 hour cut and style here. I was a little concerned that for a salon that has been operating since 1986, there are no Yelp reviews (looks like they are all filtered). I thought my last haircut was over 2 years ago because I was traumatized by the stylist at Rouge in Sausalito. I actually had my hair done at Vim & Vigor since and loved it. Just too expensive ($100+) and I am usually not in SOMA these days, so V&V had to go. :( At any rate, this was a big step for me. 2 years of growth is probably true. Before getting a cut at At the Top, my hair was over 24" long and in desperate need of some rad layers. I went in and met with Dorian. She greeted me at the door, but didn't introduce herself right off. She just looked at me and said hello, then gave me a strained smile and look like, "Well, what are you here for, you slack-jawed idiot?" I saw that as a challenge of silence, so it was an awkward beginning. Probably not a great move for someone who was about to alter my appearance. I was not at ease. The salon was very active with people of all ages and their hairs looked good, so I had hope. We sat down in the back and I was not offered any beverages or a place to hang my possessions. I was told to drop them in the next chair. I showed Dorian the photos of the long layered look I hoped for, acknowledging that I have fine hair and that I wasn't going to look like a supermodel afterward. I just wanted a decent haircut with a little edge to it. She cited the limitations and set to work. What she didn't know is that I'd had the very haircut I showed her and it was awesome. It looked great. (I'd had it done in NY years ago by a Paul Mitchell stylist, so I had an edge back then.) I knew it was possible if you knew what you were doing. She began cutting and chatting. The cutting was fine, the chatting was a little forced. Not sure what it was, but we just weren't connecting. Was it me? Was I being judged on my appearance (which I admit was a little rough after a few tough months)? The thing about the Bay Area, folks, is that you don't know if Hobo John sitting next to you on MUNI is the patentholder for the lapband, so better not pass judgment. Besides, karma and all that. I asked Dorian how I could make my hair thicker and she talked about a friend of hers who owns a salon in Sausalito specializing in hair growth solutions for people with alopecia and wigs. Excuse me? I may have fine hair, but it covers my head. Really, I was just asking about product! I wasn't sure what to make of her response, so I just kept my mouth shut and took a few points off. The haircut I got from Dorian was middle of the road. We took about 3 inches off the bottom, added some chunky layers and off I went. It looks clean and kept, but not edgy. I tipped generously and on my way out, she oddly said, "good luck with that." WTF??? Good luck with what? Getting a wig? read more

Yesterday was my third time for services with Tomm, prior partial highlight and cut. Since he did my highlights before, I didn't bring in my formula from a previous stylist. That was my first mistake, I thought he had captured the information when he colored my hair previously. So, before he got too far underway, I requested that we discuss color so that there would be no regrets. (I use highlights to camouflage my gray.) To be honest, any good stylist, regardless of relationship length, takes 5 minutes to discuss what's working or what's not instead of presuming. It was a rather painful conversation and I'm unsure if it was because he was already running late (I was his first appointment of the day) and had another arriving shortly. I just wanted to ensure that we had a good understanding of my color wishes. When he went back in the prep room to get the additional color, I overhead him and a co-worker talking about our conversation--very unprofessional when you know your client is a short distance a way. He rushed thru the foiling and missed coating the hairline properly to cover my gray. He's a friendly guy and I believe means well; however, I recommend he take the 5 minutes with each of his clients. I don't feel comfortable going back and that's a shame since I live in Mill Valley. read more

I don't...I just want a good haircut. Alessandra knows all the fancy cutting techniques that make it obvious you did not go to Supercuts. I have been getting my haircut with Alessandra for the past five years, and I always leave feeling beautiful and satisfied. She is able to follow direction extremely well and has what I consider to be an intuitive sense about what I want. She knows my personality very well and never tries to push me out of comfort zone with short haircuts, as do many other hair stylists. All salons downtown Mill Valley have parking issues. You must pay The Meters, ergo, no private parking while you spend your hard earned folding money. So,, no competition there. HInt from Heloise to the county and city: when times are tough, suspend the parking meters to encourage more spending/ and hence, economically support local businesses ! Police/meter maids should have bigger fish to fry. Off the soap box, and onto the great hair salon. When "friendly" is a cultural life style, and "active listening" a personal profession...I feel I can enthusiastically say that this salon beats these two issues, nicely, hands down. Such wonderful telephone manners, and my stylist a jewel. And to the point ~ the hair cut: Jim cut my straight, fine hair into a piece of art...included a bit of my personality, and demonstrated these skills while actively listening, problem solving and genuinely giving back to me. They offer drinks (your choice) a beautiful setting, and gracious hosting. I will be back to this salon, even though the meters run from 9 to 6 pm. Used my Groupon before it expired last week with TOMM and i had a fabulous haircut and color .Tomm was really accomodating he even let me divide the appointment into two separate days as i had not allowed enough time for the appointment.he did my cut and blow-dry in the first appointment and the next day he did the color and blow-dry.My daughter who is 4 came with me on the second appointment and all the staff were very accomodating with her and TOMM even cut her bangs for her ! wonderful service as i was initially a little nervous buying the groupon for hair services but it really was all positive and i have made my next appointment for febuary. read more

Carmen Ching cuts and colors my hair everytime and I never leave unhappy! Everytime someone attempts to get my hair from its natural black to the light brown I want it alway ends up looking terrible. So, I scheduled a second appointment for the following Saturday and just returned from that appointment, and once again, Carmen was a no show. read more

After looking through the many Groupon offers, I selected Tomm with At the Top Salon based on his experience and the salon reviews. I told Tomm that I wanted my hair trimmed 1-2 inches, and to keep the cut the same. I brought in a picture of an asian female with an ombre hair color, and told him I wanted my color the same. He told me that would not be a problem. I felt he rushed my color and cut. My blonde strands came out platinum color, and did not blend well with my black hair. When he was done with my hair, I told him I was not happy with the color, he said he would tone the blonde strands. After toning the strands, the color was still very blonde. My hair cut was uneven, one side was longer than the other. My layers did not blend in front as well. I now have to put my hair in a ponytail until I can go back to NH2, they do not have an opening till Wednesday. Tomm offered to see me today, but I was too scared that he would butcher my hair worse, so I elected to not go back to see him. Lesson learned from this experience is to take a good look at the color and cut before leaving the salon. Just because a salon has good reviews does not mean the stylist you are seeing is rated the same. I now have to spend more money getting another cut, I would have been better off just going to NH2. read more

Jeane is awesome! She totally fixed my waist length long, super thick hair on a fix-it visit. I love that she's so communicative and really gets to know what you want before she starts. I felt really confident telling her what I wanted/didn't want which is really hard for me sometimes. I loved that she knows so much about color theory and hair- it made the time pass really quickly (usually, it takes 3+ hrs for my big head of hair!). I was given a gift certificate to go here for a hair coloring. I was nervous as I never had my hair colored professionally before. But Bonnie was awesome. Listened to what colors I had dyed my hair before (out of a box) and talked with me about colors. She did a great job with the color (which I LOVE!).
