This is a review for Jackie Larkins, who did hair for my wedding this past weekend (for myself, my 6 bridesmaids, and my mom). Jackie was incredibly responsive throughout the whole planning process, and she really listened to my feedback after the trial. She was so much fun on the day, and moved efficiently but carefully through everyone, keeping our timeline on track. She gave us all updo's that complemented each other but were unique to each person, and my hair stayed perfectly in place despite crazy heat and 3 hours of intense dancing! I get my hair done with Jackie, I have been there 3 times. The first time was the best ! When I showed her the photo of what I wanted. They are usually accommodating with my schedule which requires me to come by after 5;30pm. The salon is very clean and has nice decor, you feel special when you enter. read more

Got my first haircut at 171 with Joseph. Finally! Someone knows how to layer curly/wavy hair. I have 2B curl-type hair and it always looked flat when the layers grew too long. Well turns out they were never layered properly to begin with. Joseph suggested shorter layers--which made me a bit nervous at first as I was afraid I would look like a poodle. He blow-dried it beautifully, (no stiff news anchor look). When I washed it a few days later I was curious to see how the layers would look with my natural hair. And OMG I finally have volume!! I called to make my first appointment, hoping to build a long-term relationship with an artist. No one answered so I emailed my request early afternoon on Saturday. On Monday I received an email stating that someone would contact me that day. Finally, on Wednesday I received a text. It shouldn't take 5 days just to schedule an appointment, and It was dissapointing that I received a casusal text instead of a phone call. I decided to go to San Francisco instead. I wish I had more confidence in my ability to articulate what she has brought to my life over the many many years I've been gifted with the pleasure of knowing her and having her make me feel beautiful again. I live many miles away from Lena's location, and I have no hesitation to drive however long it takes to get to her. She has proven herself over the years to rise above the rest and always be consistently the most talented, capable and enjoyable stylist I've ever known. She is not just an outstandingly talented stylist, colorist and artist, she also has the capacity to *see* something in me and her other clients that we cannot always see when we walk in, which is an inner beauty that she is able to reveal. She's incredibly generous and equally patient...very dedicated to making sure she does as much as possible to bring beauty to the people she works with. I always feel transformed by her. I'm always surprised at what she is able to do...how she is able to allow me to see myself with new eyes and an open mind. And that's just the part about her great skill as a stylist. Her personality is as wonderful as her skill. She is warm, friendly, funny, receptive, listens very carefully to what her clients want and need, and she is just simply delightful. A straight-up damned nice person. Very down to earth and very available to connect to the individual in her chair with a sincere desire to make their lives better in the way she can, which is an important and magical way. Closest thing to having a fairy godmother wave a magic wand, in my experience. We are lucky to have her in our area. I thought that I had booked her to do hair for my friends wedding, but dropped the ball and had not fully booked her. Beautiful relaxing atmosphere. Very elegant and high end feel to the space with approachable & kind personnel. I see Kjaersti for haircuts there and she is so good at listening to my needs (fix my mess of a hair), daily lifestyle (i never blow dry) and desires (I want to look like a influencer on instagram of course). Joking aside she is so talented and easy to talk to. I highly recommend her. She fixed my stale and flat looking lob into a layered breezy cut that has movement and bounce on its own. I have my hair done by Brittany Stone. I had just moved here from LA when I found Brittany. I had a full head of extensions and no hope of ever getting out of them . Three years later I have gorgeous hair in great condition and extention free. While I needed them, she was careful with placement and maintenance and we slowly removed them until she had repaired all of the damage they had caused. Brittany is a color master as well. She always knows what to do to make your hair become your best asset. Her skill and knowledge is paramount. I might also add she is kind, careful, thorough and funny as hell. My friend and I met Anya in her gorgeous salon on Miller Ave to get our hair and makeup done for an event. Anya is incredibly sweet and very talented. One scroll through Google Images and she knew exactly what we were going for (more than we did). The experience was relaxed, festive, and so much fun. She exceeded our expectations in every way and set a positive tone for our whole night. We walked out of there feeling very styled and somehow also very natural. Sabine is amazing! She used to work at Yosh's in San Francisco and now works here in Mill Valley. I always get exactly what I asked for, or if I'm in a hair funk she'll suggest something that I totally end up loving. Plus, her prices are waaaaayyyyy lower than what her counterparts charge at Yosh's (now Gina Khan Salon). I have been seeing Lena Bivens since 1994, when I was 27. When I first moved to San Francisco, I got a bad haircut at a random place in the Castro that made me look like early 90s white rapper Vanilla Ice. Fortunately a friend recommended Lena, and I have been with her ever since. On that first visit she showed good humor and understanding as I explained that, despite appearances, I didn't actually want to look like Vanilla Ice -- and she made it all better. After about a year of getting my hair cut by Lena I realized that when she asked me what kind of look I wanted at the start of each appointment, the only reasonable answer was "whatever you think is best." Lena had such a great sense of style, and I respected her judgment so much, that I figured whatever she thought would look best on me would, in fact, look best on me. So we just skipped the part where you sit in the chair and talk about what to do in favor of leaving it in her hands. And, after 24 years, I have NEVER been disappointed. In that time I've had military-like clean cut looks, longish hair, shaggy Beatlemania-like cuts, punky spiky hair, and just about everything else you can imagine that's just a little bit different but still appropriate for an attorney. That's not an easy line to walk. But, because Lena gets to know her clients so well, she understood that I wanted a look that would "pass" professionally but still signal that I was unique. She understood, and she delivered -- for 24 years and counting. And the looks Lena gave me were not only fashionable, but also flattering. As others reviewers have commented, she knows how to make her clients look good. She understands your features and how to give you a haircut that will frame them in the most flattering way. She will make you look better. Finally, though it's probably not part of the actual job description, Lena is a lovely person to share an hour or two with every six weeks. She's a wonderful and incredibly committed parent from whom I've learned so much that has helped me with my own children. She's a genuinely nice person with all kinds of interests and talents that she generously shares with her clients. You really should make an appointment now. read more

Salon 171 is a really comfortable place to escape to and get pampered. Everyone in the salon is super nice and professional. Makaya has been cutting and coloring my hair for 6-7 years. Even though I have lots of grey, she has kept me in semi-permanent color, which is much more natural looking.
