Asta is our favorite special occasion place. The food is creative and adventurous, yet restrained. The dishes aren't overworked or fussy, but rather emphasize natural flavors. The menu changes frequently and each time we've visited I've eaten something (or several things) I've never had before. Most recently I tried stinging nettle in a filled pasta, roasted squab, and knotweed with meringue.
The wine and beer selection is lovely. We like to have the pairing--a great option if you enjoy trying different things--where you get a small pour of a thoughtfully paired beverage with each dish.
Furthermore, the space is not only very chic, but also comfortable, cozy, and clean. I'm fussy about things like wobbly chairs and excessive noise, but even up at the chef's counter, the seats are sturdy, there is plenty of elbow room, and the noise of the open kitchen mixed with the music is pleasant, but never too loud.
Though it's not a vegetarian restaurant, they do love their veggies and both tasting menus feature a lot of vegetable preparations. If you're the type who needs a giant steak to feel you've gotten your money's worth, you're better off going to a steakhouse (though I will say the grass fed beef I've had here is probably the best beef I've ever eaten). If you're a curious, adventurous eater, bring your favorite person, sit at the counter, and enjoy the experience. read more
