Read the reviews on Yelp and went online for dinner. Even with the D.C. traffic my food was delivered quickly! The order was accurate and Hot and tasty. Ample amounts of delicious Chinese food. Egg Foo Yung, Crab Rangoons which were huge the largest I've ever seen! and full of cream cheese with a bowl full of sauce to dip. My Foo Yung Gravy was also a bowl full and nice and thick. They sent all the condiments, soy sauce, hot mustard, and duck sauce with several forks and napkins. All the dishes were packed well and delivered with a smile! I couldn't have asked for more. Chinese food in DC (at least the nongentrified parts) is a lot like dating. You find someone you like, get to know them, but in a couple of months the flaws are too great to overlook. We went to Asian American after a recent breakup with another place. This relationship is likely to be like all the others. Their online ordering system didn't work so I was in for a wait. Instead of vegetable dumplings, they gave us dumplings stuffed with some meat substance. I'm a vegetarian so I can't eat the dumplings even if I wanted to. The other two dishes, vegetable fried rice and General Tso's tofu, were pretty standard for DC. Any shi-shi Columbia Heights competitor should consider opening a branch in Northeast. We need a place that has better French fries than fried rice, or, better yet, doesn't serve American food at all. read more

DO NOT ORDER!!!!! I have been living in this neighborhood for almost 20 years and have never been so disrespected by a carryout worker. I called in a large order (4) this evening. When the worker was repeating the order back to me I asked for him to repeat himself because I couldn't quite make out what he said. He then responded by asking if I was drunk. I couldn't believe what I heard. I told him I was highly offened and asked to speak to a manager. He then said the manager was not there and hung up. We ordered from here while staying nearby on vacation. The menu is varied and that "something for everyone" approach is helpful for a five-person family. Also, it's super cheap. That's probably because it's a pretty "bare bones" type of place. If you have modest expectations and want decent, hot food for a low price, give it shot. Overall, it was pretty good. We got the Pu-Pu Platter to share, which was only ok. The teriyaki chicken included was delicious, but the crab rangoons were subpar at best. The orange chicken was out of sight - really really good. The flavor and the spice were spot on and we devoured it. Yum! The chicken strips were straightforward - nothing much to report there. The french fries left a LOT to be desired. I think they'd been sitting for a while before getting dumped in with our meals. They weren't hot, and they were kind of chewy, too. Maybe Christmas night isn't the best night to order from here? Who knows. First, the website needs help. I understand they're a small Chinese food restaurant, but yikes. Order got erased after I said I wanted to proceed as guest and I got a 404 Error message nearly every time I tried to click on something. And they aren't on Stub Hub or Seamless. But let's move on. We ordered crab rangoon, general tsao's chicken, beef with broccoli, szechuan green beans and the house special fried rice. The crab rangoon was ok...wonton was a little chewy, like it had been sitting around for a while. General Tsao's was surprisingly crispy, which I appreciated, but several of the pieces were just breading, no chicken. The beef was pretty chewy given how thinly it was sliced and not terribly appetizing. The green beans were pretty excellent. They are responsible for one of the stars. The fried rice though...little to no seasoning, and the chicken (I think it's the chicken?) is a delightful shade of grey that I'm sure I'll come to regret in a few hours. Chinese food is consistently solid, and well portioned. Delivery usually in 30 minutes or so. We ordered the chicken wings, shrimp fried rice, General Tso Chicken, Moo Shoo Shrimp, and shrimp rolls. Tastes good enough. I ordered the Shrimp noodle soup as take out and there was no bok choy in the soup. So it was basically miso soup (minus tofu) with noodles, an egg and shrimp tempura on the side. Shrimp of pretty low quality I should add. A little disappointing.. Nothing particularly special about this place but as I said.. tastes good enough. This is the best Chinese food in DC North East Area. I've tried other Chinese Carry Outs in Nearby and they don't even come close to the quality of food at Asian American. They have the best beef and broccoli, shrimp basket, and steak & cheese sandwich. The beef has very little fat (just enough fat), so it's not all fat (and chewey & barely any meat) like most beef items that other carry-outs sell. Also, the food is always fresh and they're fast! They also have a great variety of other foods such as gyros, mozzarella sticks, wings, etc. Give Them a TRY. read more

I got delivery from them and the wait time wasn't that bad, but the service sucked. They offered me a free soda, but charged me. I ordered a 20oz bottle of soda and a spring roll that I didn't get, but they charged me for that too. I asked if I could get it and they said they'll put them in my order the next time, but my question is, how will they know who I am? My advice is to call and make sure that you get what you're asking for and to get the price for your food before hand because I was charged more than the website quoted. I am usually not steered wrong by my fellow yelpers. In this case I have been, and my stomach is paying the price today. I can only assume the postive reviewers have iron stomachs and are willing to overlook the food quality due to the lack of delivery places in the neighborhood. I decided to order a test run since I have seen this place driving down to Union Market. I ordered Szechuan beef and fried wontons. The food came within 30 minutes,but the driver would not come out of his car to give me the order. I live in a row house, only 10 steps! I guess the light rain was too much for him. I got my order and noticed the lack of beef in my dish - it was mostly shredded celery,carrots and onions in a sauce that was most definately not szechaun or spicy. The beef that was there was fatty. The smell was the worst - it smelled like seafood - as if the the dish had been cooked in the same pan as shrimp or fish. I ate a few bites and decided it would be best to stop or risk full food poisoning the next day. The wontons tasted chewy, not crispy, and the meat inside was similar to old BBQ pork. Overall poor food quality and will never order again. It is now 12:30 the next day and the nausea is just subsiding...*shudder*. I honestly don't know how this place got such high reviews! read more

Absolute trash. Ordered the most basic of dishes, chicken fried rice and spring rolls. Both were absolutely awful. They put eggs on the rice that looked like I had just scrambled the eggs for some quick breakfast, it wasn't even mixed into the rice which was mushy and tasteless. I asked for a full refund. This is my favorite spot for Chinese food in DC - and I've been searching for many years for a solid spot that is reliable. The food always tastes extremely fresh, and exactly how it's supposed to. Unlike a lot of other local places, the flavors are just perfect and nothing is off-putting. I also like the sushi here - it's fresh and the portions are good. My favorite things are the lo mein, general tso's wings, shrimp tempura sushi, and chicken and broccoli. But really, I've ordered a lot from here and everything has been fantastic and quickly made. This was a great discovery. It's your typical DC Mumbo Sauce and Chinese food establishment, but for the same price you get a notch up with the quality of food. The General Tso's chicken for instance is fried very well. Maybe this place is new and has a well calibrated fryer. I don't know. All I know is the outside was crispy (I ate in, delivery probably allows enough time to get it a bit soggy). The fried rice has little char marks on it. I like thinking that they got the heat in the wok up high enough that the rice and veggies actually did fry a bit. I haven't extensively sampled their menu, but this is the only chinese takeout menu in my drawer now. Oh and they have chinese donuts, I never find outside of buffets.... so bonus point for that. read more

I only heard about this place through Yelp, and I am so grateful! Anybody who eats in the District knows how hard it is to find even competent Chinese food in DC -- like in there isn't any! (Whatever you do, stay away from Chinatown!) So....we tried this last night and finally have found the holy grail! Fresh ingredients, big portions, vegetables that have clearly been chopped by a human being with a knife. If there's a chili pepper on the menu, the dish is HOT. The website is easy to order from and special orders are attended to. We had Curried Chicken and Singapore Mei Fun. Both excellent (the Mei fun needed soy sauce, but better too little than too much). Both quite hot, so if you like spicy but not so much let them know. Also, I think they use MSG, so tell them if you don't want it. We also got fried dumplings which were huge, but didn't travel well. I'd try steamed next time. Free 2-liter of soda. How did they know orange pop brings out the little girl in me? Anyway, I'm offering 5 stars even though they only earned 4 1/2, to help them stand out from the crowd of awful places too many people think are acceptable. read more

My only issue is that I recently discovered that they use MSG in some of their dishes, so if you care about your health please request your dishes to be made without MSG.
