the storefront on Rhode Island Ave. NE

Wow...the food here was fukang great!! Just fukang great!!! Sorry, I couldn't resist. Actually, it was pretty good... When I stumbled upon Fu Kang's storefront, as I wandered north along Rhode Island Ave., I was hungry and needed something quick to eat; and, their name caught my eye. Wouldn't it have caught yours too? At first, I didn't know what to order. Should I order one of their Chinese-American offerings? But, gosh, that seemed a risky option. I didn't want to end up with something cloyingly sweet, bathed in a neon-colored sauce, or something otherwise dominated by broccoli or gratuitous celery. So, I opted for one of the various seafood specials that they had posted on the walls...the generic fried fish platter. This deal consisted of three pieces of fried fish with a side of fries. From what I could tell, the fish was either trout or some other kind of white fish (like tilapia). Although it had a somewhat juvenile appearance with a grainy breadcrumb exterior (which looked, at first glance, like something out of the frozen foods aisle), the fish was, actually, battered in-house and surprisingly good. The batter was not obnoxiously thick or bread-y but sand paper-y and crispy; and, the flesh was light, moist, and flaky. The one-two punch of an inviting crunch and a tasty interior complemented each other well and (combined with very passable fries, which, albeit, included a few limp members) delivered, in the end, an honestly satisfying meal. The three large pieces were more than filling (as each piece was plump and generous); and, it was a fabulous deal at a mere $5.45. Now, don't get me wrong and accuse me of inordinately hyping up the food. Fu Kang does not represent destination dining by any means. And, no, there has not been any paradigm shift; nor, have I found some kind of "missing link" that might render our present understanding of fried fish obsolete. Let's not get carried away. Unless Anthony Bourdain, for some God forsaken reason, pays a visit and sings its praises, nobody is going to care much about Fu Kang one way or the other (except the loyal locals who trickled in when I was there). But, make no mistake about it. The fried fish at Fu Kang is pretty good (for what it is). Yes, I would prefer it over the overly priced catfish at Oohh's & Aahh's and the underwhelming whiting at Horace & Dickie's any day. So, by all means, go!! And, have a fukang great time!!!

This is a hidden jewel in all the chinese restaurants DC has to offer. Simply: $5 for a lunch special which is BIG, TASTY and CHEAP! I can't find any other place that can offer good food at this price. The chinese guy in the cashier is very friendly, although they hid behind reinforced glass (You know, RIA is not the safest place in DC). I always try any new chinese restaurant by buying their Moo Goo Gai Pan, and for God's sake, it's a blessing! Good amount of chicken, perfect steamed white rice and for just 5 bucks! I can't ask for anything else. Just try it! You will NOT regret!

So, I enjoy the dishes I have ordered so far like double cooked pork, chicken hot pot, ribs, string…read morebeans, bok choy w/an exotic mushroom....all superb! But I made the mistake to order the Sichuan shrimp, it was totally disappointing and the shrimp were soft and chewy tasteless as opposed to succulent and firm. I mean very disappointing compared to the other dishes. With that said, I would avoid the seafood dishes perhaps. The double cooked pork is a real winner and very authentic.

They could really use some modernization and/or renovation. I should have known something was wrong after I got there during peak lunch hours and no one was there. It was completely empty. Needless to say, I did not have the best experience here. Service here was lacking. My server never checked on me, never refilled my water and I had to track her down to get a box and my check. She spent most of the time yelling at people on the phone. They have a huge menu with a wide assortment of classic Chinese food. I ordered the sesame chicken, which came with rice. y food was ready in about 5 minutes. I will get right to the point. It was avergae to below average. I could not even eat it in one sitting and had to take half of it to go. I really did not like the flavor and the chicken just tasted weird to me. There are few places that I will not return for another meal. This is one of them. The service was subpar and the food was bad.

"I'm craving soup dumplings," said my obsessed nine-year-old daughter. Since Soupy Dumpling & Fancy…read moreCuppa was too far away, we walked into Dumpling Hot Pot Beyond after an evening school event on a Thursday around 7 p.m. One other person was just finishing their meal when we arrived. Overall, the food was good. Once seated, a server hands you an iPad where you'll order your food. To feed two adults and one child, all hungry, we ordered dan dan noodles, orange chicken, cucumbers, BBQ pork bao, pork dumplings, and, of course, soup dumplings. Every dish had good flavor. The dan dan noodles are more soupy compared to nearby Copycat, but it was still good. One odd thing that may be a one off, but worth noting is the wait time. With one other person there and no takeout pickups and three people in the kitchen, it took 35 minutes to get our first dishes. Over an hour later, we got our final dish- orange chicken. We couldn't figure out why there was such a long wait especially when other spots bring out the cucumbers within minutes of ordering. We were hungry so it added to the emotions, but worth calling out in case you're a rush.

We liked the Orange Chicken sauce a lot. It was sweet and well-spiced. The chicken pieces,…read morethemselves, were maybe a regional style I'm not familiar with. The chicken pieces in the dish came in the form of gargantuan balls of mixed meat, varying between white and dark. Sometimes the texture was pure meat, other times the meats' texture was very slippery/tender and fatty all in the same chunk of chicken. Dumpling Hot Pot Beyond's Veggie Wontons in Scallion Sauce were very good. Most veggie wontons in the green wonton wrap have a similar 'vegetable' flavor that I'm not crazy about but these have less of that flavor. I loved the sauce. I was so excited to taste the Bean Paste Bao's as they are not easy to find. The Dan Dan noodles were served warm and mixed with a fragrant sauce. The noodles had less of a sesame or peanut taste than I'm used to. Also, we ordered the slightly spice heat level yet these were the hottest Dan Dan noodles I've ever tasted. (See photo of receipt indicating desired spice level.) I like things hot but Lord Almighty! I am - apparently - not woman enough. I loved the hot chili oil and container of hot chili flakes to add to the dishes. The basic rice was good, as well. Basics like white rice are not to be underestimated. We liked the texture. I'd go back to experience the hot pot and more dim sum options if I'm in the area.
