So... a little background....I used to absolutely love this place. I have been patronizing this establishment since the early 2000's. Even when I lived hundreds of miles away, I still only ate at this carry out when visiting the DC area. Personally, I only like and eat their Chinese dishes etc. In my opinion, they have never and still do not prepare American dishes too well. I had to preface this because I am so disappointed with the quality of food and the apparent change of management. After reopening, since the brief closure due to this pandemic, I do not recognize anyone in there anymore. Not even one individual is present prior to the start of this pandemic and there have been some obvious changes with how the food is prepared, pricing and portions. Before I ordered tonight, I last ate here about a month or so ago. Even then I noticed that the beef and broccoli was not the same beef and broccoli that I had been accustomed to eating for almost twenty years. The flavor was gone and the grade of beef has definitely changed, for the worst. I sometimes frequent other carry out establishments in DC. Generally, their shrimp fried rice is about $9. China Express is charging $11.15 for the same portions that are offered cheaper in higher rent districts. This is ridiculous! I have to find another establishment for Chinese food. Poor customer service and the food don't taste the same and or is often uncooked. Bring back mom and pops that was running the business before 2018. Called in $72 order last night for a gathering. As soon as I got home they called back and said the forgot to include an item. I asked if the could include an egg roll to the order for the inconvenience and was told manager wasn't there so she couldn't do it. I told her just to credit my card for the meal. She told me should would give me the egg roll and could I come and get food. When I arrived the same woman "pretended" to put the egg roll in my bag and assured me it was there. Whe I got home ir wasn't. I'm writing this not b/c of the egg roll but the lengths this place would go through to give someone something. Customer service is something they know nothing about. Mainly people of color patronize this establishment and it is still clear they still don't care for us and is not concerned with messing with the hand that feeds them! read more

Ordered some fried chicken wings and vegetable fried rice for my mom and the food was so bad she couldn't eat it. They forgot to put vegetables in the "vegetable" fried rice. My mom said the chick wings were horrible to. They still had feathers in them. She says she will most likely not order from them again. And it's been years since I went to a Chinese Take-out partly because of things like this and usually the service is bad. read more

Check your receipt before you leave. They added $4 to the menu price because they gave me an extra egg foo young patty. When I demanded they honor menu price they told me to give the fourth patty back. Lol I refused to let them take my food in the back so I had to stand there at the counter with a fork and put it on a styrofoam container. The cashier started yelling telling me to pack my food and get out. I guess it is accurate to say they only respect us when we are giving them our money. Her true colors definitely came out. Their beef and broccoli though......... Soooo good! They also have great lo mein and eggdrop soup! Everyone always talks about their chicken wings like they're the bomb as well, but I thought they were just average, this place still deserves 5 stars though. read more

This is a great Chinese fast food store. It really reminds me of China (Beijing liltle street restaurants). Very casual and smells like everything is homemade. You can see the cooks working hard when preparing your food. The ladies at the register are very nice and helpful. Go there twice a week and they never disappoint me. I like when I place my order over the phone, they just ask you what you want and no name needed. Very simple and straightforward. read more

A friend introduced me to this joint nearly 20 years ago. I enjoy the chicken and broccoli with garlic sauce. It is the best that I have ever eaten but some of the other dishes leave much to be desires. For instance, the sweet and sour chicken is horrible. Whereas, the wonton soup is excellent. The final analysis is that you have to try each dish to see if it matches your expectation. I thought that all of their food would be exceptional because of the chicken broccoli with garlic sauce. I know we all joke about writing a one star review for a place because the service sucked, or the food wasn't good. Well here goes my one and only time I will ever write a one star rating because this place is horrendous. The food is poor American-Chinese food. There is nothing special or great about this food and we have eaten here a few times out of necessity because of the convenience of it being down the street. If you have to eat and there is nothing else....just go to the burger king right down the street..... So here we go on the service. We've ordered delivery a twice from here. I know that's not even close to enough for a fair sample size but after the ordeal tonight to just get some food delivered....well it's enough. The order was placed at 7 pm and we waited and waited. We called about a hour after the delivery to see what happened and we were told the delivery driver was outside the door. So we looked out the door and go figure there's no one in the block. So we call back and got to engage in a back and forth with a few different people at the store who advised us that the food was coming and that we could get a 30% discount. They then advised us that the food had been out for an hour and we should get it shortly. We asked why we would be paying for food that had been in a car for an hour and we were told that it was coming. The employee then hung the phone up and we naturally called back telling them we did not want the food and we would like to speak with the manager. We were advised that a manager was not working and the phone was hung up on their end. This continued for two more times and led to us advising them to refund our money and cancel the order. They then advised us to come to the store to get the food. So in the end. Thank you Bank of America for ensuring that China Express did not process and charge us for the food that we did not receive. China Express.....thank you for nothing and do not expect any business from the brand new neighborhood right around the corner from your business. read more
