Tofu Sandwich, Chocolate Brownie, Iced Matcha Latte
    Dana S.

I loved the vibe here. The style of decoration is a little old-fashioned (not outdated, just an older aesthetic) with beautiful, interesting artwork covering the walls, a nice fireplace, and plants in the windows. It felt like my grandparents' living room. The barista was very nice too, which made the place feel very welcoming. I got a tofu sandwich, a brownie, and an iced matcha latte. The sandwich had slices of tofu, slaw, spinach, and soft cheese (I think it was melted cheese, maybe it was a spread) on fig sourdough. I liked that it was something a little different and healthful, and it was delicious (especially the bread), but it had been made in advance and the dressing had really soaked into the bread. The edges of the brownie were a little dry, but the middle was so good - it was fudgy but not overly rich. The matcha latte was very clumpy and the flavour was so-so, though the weak flavour is probably not because they used low-quality matcha but because it wasn't fully incorporated. I would not get this again. My total was $21 which is comparable to what I'd pay for a similar meal at chain coffee shops like Blenz or Artigiano. While there are certainly better coffee shops for food, this one was better than the competition at the price point. The food had that wholesome homemade quality that the big chains lack. But ultimately the atmosphere here is so comfortable that I'd choose it over a lot of places with objectively better food, which for me is saying a Iot.

The café is small and cozy, they have comfortable seats. The music is a bit annoying (Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj type) but it would still be a good place to work or study because the music isn't that loud. The chicken sandwich is pretty good, 7/10, but Idk if it's worth the price. They have a few types of homemade bread for the different sandwiches (chicken with cranberry walnut) and I think the bread is really good. Next time I will try the tuna sandwich on the chili cheese bread. The cappuccino is 3.5/10, it tasted a bit burnt.

Had a great coffee here and some pastries. Staff are incredibly nice, definitely will be coming back when I'm in the area for sure!

I really liked the coffee here, I finished it in no time, I usually take my time but this coffee was smooth, so easy to drink, I wanted more! My daughter had breakfast and we shared so I have the bagel, nice and crispy, great flavour. I would suggest they play some music, even if it's low, it was too quiet and you could hear every conversation so clear... I dropped my phone on my plate and it sounded sooo loud, it was because of the lack of "other noises" so of course I got stared at lol Love the decoration it's cousy I would definitely go back

    Yuck.

We had intentions of a Sunday hunker down for an hour, coffee and laptoping here. The service was friendly but I made the mistake of ordering the day old muffins. Three mini muffins in a clump for about a toonie. DISGUSTING I spat it into my napkin. Drip coffee wasn't great either. Atmosphere was okay but I think if you're looking for a treat with that coffee just go to starbucks across the street unless you are looking for everything to taste like gluten free flax. Yuck. Never again!

    Great "Artistry" from the barista....

Dough was very buttery and crispy. I could taste strong butter flavor which stood out. Passionfruit jam dominated over hazelnut cream. It lean on sweeter side. I prefer more hazelnut cream. However, the croissant itself was one of the best. Very delicious. Holiday Chocolate Kugelhopf~ dark chocolate sweet bread studded with chocolate chips, citrus peels, and almond praline, rolled in sugar. I really liked kugelhoph's dough and almond praline! It wasn't too heavy, lighter texture and praline wasn't too sweet. So, sugar coating paired with dough very well. I would like to get this one again! Overall, I really enjoyed both Christmas items. I am writing this review because my email to them went unanswered…read more I am shocked and disappointed at the way I was treated after spending $40. I am a HUGE 49th fan and love their dougnuts and coffee. Whenever I have friends in town, or someone needs a suggestion on where to visit, I always say "49th has really good coffee and doughnuts". Unfortunately, my mind has changed, and I don't see myself ever recommending this location. As an avid coffee drinker, I am pretty picky on where I choose to have coffee and love the cafe culture in Vancouver. My mom loves doughnuts and we had come all the way from Langley for a day in Kits, so I recommended we go to 49th! I spent about $40 on 4 doughnuts, 2 maple sea salt lattes and a drip coffee. The maple sea salt lattes looked beautiful and my doughnut was delicious as usual (big fan of the french crueller). Unfortunately, our maple sea salt lattes were very very strong and had no maple or sea salt flavoring in my opinion. I decided to ask the girl at the register if we could please get a different drink because it was super strong and didn't taste good. I was met with SO much attitude, i was actually shocked. I went into it very friendly and politely asked for an alternate drink as i did spend $12 on these two drinks (and life gets expensive!!). She then goes "well, you probably don't like the taste of coffee then".... I actually didn't know how to respond. But i did say "I'm a huge 49th fan and love coffee!". Then I had asked how many shots are in the small and she said "2". I then had asked if we could get a new/different drink and she goes "I'll give it to you this one time, but next time you'll have to pay." This is NOT the way to treat a paying customer. It felt so rude and accusatory. I very rarely come to Kits, so she wouldn't have recognized me and am an honest girl who works hard for my money. When the customer comes up politely, you offer to make it right. I hope the next person that comes up not satisfied with their drink is treated a lot better than how I was.

Unfortunately, it was not the same. I was glad to see the same amazing pastries and tarts and sandwiches, all fresh and beautifully displayed in the display case. I ordered a croissant and it was superb as usual. I also ordered one of thier baguettes to bring home. My kid and I think SV has the best baguettes in the city. They are crusty on the outside, soft yet chewy inside, and just consistently perfect. This one was as good as all the others we've had from here. Yeah! I wanted an Earl Grey tea which IMO is a pretty basic order. Surprisingly, they did not have it. I got a green tea instead (their tea selection was very limited). And the girl who took my order, as well as the girl who rang me up at the cash, could NOT have been more aloof. I smiled and tried to make a little small talk, especially with the girl at the cash when I took out my debit card and asked how to pay (she just pointed at the tap symbol on the machine but my card is not tap-enabled. I always joke with people about this). This girl would not even look at me. Zero eye contact. No "thank you", nada. I just got really cold vibes from the two of them there at the counter. (At least when I picked up my tea at the beverage counter, the guy there made eye contact and semi smiled). (Side note: the staff at the Yaletown site have always been super pleasant and friendly, and this really makes a difference. To me, anyhow). Contrary to another reviewer's posting, the restaurant and the washroom was very clean when I visited here. No issues there. Honestly, I'm not sure I'll return to this site. There are so many cafes and bakeries around, I'd rather go to one with a warmer vibe. Or stay with my Yaletown SV.
