I came upon this café hidden in the middle of the UBC campus with a friend while exploring our alma mater on a Friday afternoon last week. We didn't stick around as we were on our way to the Pacific Spirit Regional Park trails. However, the setting of the café was enchanting enough for me to come back with my husband two days later for Sunday breakfast. We ordered our americanos, breakfast croissant, and breakfast sandwich and found a table in the courtyard outside the chalet-looking building of the café. There is small park in the courtyard along with about half a dozen tables. It was still rather early on a Sunday morning before 0930. It was quiet but neighbours were starting to emerge for their morning coffees, yoga stretches and dog walks. The americanos were rich. Good sign before we tasted our coffee: they were not served in mugs, foamy, and dark. Our croissant and English muffin sandwiches were pressed. My croissant had cheese and turkey slices with an addictive spicy jam. The English muffin halves of his egg and ham sandwiches were so pressed that they did not resemble English muffins. However, he said it was so good with its texture, greasiness and flavours. I think I'm going to get that next time. read more

I like all the Bean Around the Worlds, but the owner/manager(?) of this one is so nice and is always eager to talk about the drinks and food every time I see him, which makes this location in particular feel special to me. The aesthetic and atmosphere of the place is rustic and very cozy. I really like all their food, the sandwiches/wraps and the baked goods - there's interesting choices including good vegetarian and vegan options, and they're well-made. And the drinks are just as good - they can do a nice strong tea latte here and this summer they have decaf cold brew!! I can't handle regular coffee on most occasions so I haven't had cold brew in ages and was excited to try this, and it was amazing. Highly recommend for my fellow decaf drinkers! read more

It was great to stop in here again after so many years. This used to be a regular stop for me. The coffee is still great. I had a triple long americano. The taste was exactly what I was hoping for. Due to COVID measures, only a few people come into the shop at a time. They have appropriate plexiglass between the customer and staff. You can purchase various wraps, chicken, breakfast, vegan etc. They also have some healthy nut bars or banana bread. I had the vegan fruit/nut bar and it was yum. There is also the option to purchase larger portions of sweets to go. On the shelves in the front, there are whole banana loaves, lemon loaves, large date squares and cookies you can purchase for take away. It's a nice spot if you want great tasting local coffee and good treats. read more

I am so thankful that this coffee shop is still serving its customers. I have now come here 10 years plus. First, the cappuccino that Max makes me allows me to clean my house in record time. It could have to do with the six shots of espresso in it. His interaction with customers and his staff is admirable. He is always willing to go above and beyond to make his customers happy. He and his staff remember their regulars. Times have changed but the staffs' outlook has not changed - still the same friendly workers I am accustomed to. His cookies are to die for. The ginger snaps and chocolate chip cookies make my mouth water just thinking about them. I'm on my way after this to get some. Oatmeal cookies are soft just as I think a oatmeal cookie should be. The lemon loaf is lemony and finger licking good. Makes my taste buds dance around. I bet you can't just eat one piece? I can't. The chocolate chip loaf is so scrumptious too! read more

Have always loved this place. Everything is delicious including soups and sandwiches. My ONLY complaint is the lack of professionalism. Management will regularly hold up the line while they have a social chats with customers. This can be lovely when there is nobody waiting. The place does have a special vibe, but my frustration is getting the better of me. I hate to head up the street to the 'non local' competition. One more thing .... prices went way up this year....a full 30% more than the competition (which serves equivalent beverages), and no more coffee cards. Actually for some regular folks, they have cards, but if you ask the word is they don't have them. Get with it Bean! read more

I try to love this coffee shop. But it reminds me of those great deals you find shopping that have a catch to them. "Oh it's buy two get one free. Not buy one get one free." Things of that nature. The Good and the bad Food/Drink PRO The quality of the drinks and food is top notch! The biggest muffins in Point Grey that I've found thus far. And everyone raves about the coffee. I completely agree. CON The pricing is some of the highest I've seen. They are more expensive than Starbucks. That's saying something. I get it for things such as their muffins where the sheer size of their food and quality is greater. But for tea and coffee? They seem to charge the highest price possible without turning some customers away. Customer Service PRO (No Con) Really nice people. Very casual, relaxed setting but still professional. Environment PRO Nice leather couches. Great decor. Warm. Besides the flies, the place was very clean. CON Too warm! I love warmth. Let me be clear. I spent six years in the Caribbean. But this was a very warm coffee shop. There were also two flies soaring around the coffee shop. It's May. I don't know where those flies came from. And why haven't they gotten rid of them. I love the leather couches but there was no place to plug in your computer. When asked, the Batista said, "yeah a lot of people look for plugs there." I got the distinct impression they don't want people on their laptops sitting on the couch. However the only other areas I could plug in was in a corner here or there. Not the kind of atmosphere I want when I write. And the place was empty. So this rule might need some modification. The Bean Around The World chain seems to cater primarily to people over forty and the occasional student who has more money than their dreadlocks leave us to believe. The pricing is just a bit too high for me. BUT I would still go there if they were laptop-friendly, not boiling hot and...okay no. I'm not going back. I've tried two already and just can't do it. The Customer Service and quality of the food/drink seems to be what keeps Bean going. If you want a great coffee and are on-the-go, definitely go there. read more

This neighborhood cafe spot is golden. Not only is this a very friendly and smiley coffee counter, but you'll also see people of all ages stopping in for their fresh and daily-made food. Sure, when you get a hot plate it is microwaved. But, I think that the food is made with love so it doesn't matter much. They have gourmet daily soup selections. Of everything I've tried, I really enjoyed their mushroom soup. The surrounding neighborhood is lucky to have this spot, since the only other local spot is Tim Horton's. read more

First time at a Bean Around the World location. I have read different reviews on Bean Around the World as one of the better coffee chains. This location offers a wide selection of different coffee beans for purchase and has pastries as well. The staff there were friendly but my order took longer than expected. I would say their coffee is a bit on the pricier side. read more

This is not my go to location, however, was in the area. I actually had a gift card that I wanted to use up sooner rather than later. This location has decent amount of seating and I appreciate the wood interior that looks like a cabin at times. Barista was very friendly and sociable. London Fog was okay, nothing to write home about, however, when a drink is free it is hard to be overly critical about it. I agree with Joshua about the pricing. It is one of the reasons I often don't visit Bean Around the World locations. I do, however, love their pastries. Very large in portions and they cater to my gluten free needs with selected pastries that are fair market price. read more

Nice place to hang out, and has a nice patio out back. My complaint about this location is that they close at 5:00 PM, and the staff starts 'sweeping' you out the door shortly after 4:30 (turning off the lights, picking up your coffee cup, etc.) - it's too early. I'd rather go there knowing I can spend some time without being bothered. read more

This is one of Point Grey's gathering spots for locals. The staff know many of their customers by name and are extremely friendly! The place has a cozy, homey vibe with old wood floors, a fireplace, as well as comfy couches. The only thing is that it is a bit expensive :( $4.50 for the smallest size cappuccino! My muffin was dry as well, but I think I had the last of the batch. This doesn't seem to deter people though, the place is always busy. read more

I really didn't like this cafe. Both their london fog and their chai tasted overly sweet and like the syrups they were using had aspartame in them The panini I bought was mushy and quite expensive. There isn't any wifi, and not much in the way of access to outlets. Both my friend and I were bothered by men while trying to study here as well. I couldn't think of a redeeming quality for this cafe except the location. read more

i live in the neighbourhood and have for about 8 years. Honestly I have been aTim Horton's gal for over 25 years. But, my husband found the been and was going there.... we would do our walk, then split up,I'd go to Tim's and he would go to The Bean. Every so often he would come home with a latte for me. O.k, I can honestly say it is WAY , WAy better than Tim Hortons and kicks as to Starbucks which is just a bunch of burnt beans. The staff at this shop are super friendly and really get to know their customers. I had maybe been going a week (not every day) before they knew me by name and what I liked. Weekend mornings the place is crawling with different groups in and out, I see overtype from the weekend road bikers to the elderly couple who live across the street from us and their cronies. Its a true gathering spot for people who live here and the cozy sofas and fireplace area a great touch. They even have a backyard patio! read more
