i've walked past delany's coffee house more times than i can count, always meaning to step inside. today, with the light shifting softly over english bay and the air carrying that early hint of spring, i finally did. the space is larger than it appears from the street, open, warm, gently buzzing with conversation. sunlight stretches across wooden tables. cups clink softly. milk steams in steady rhythm behind the counter. it feels like a true neighbourhood coffee house: unhurried, familiar, welcoming. i came hoping for a strawberry matcha latte, only to learn it's no longer on the menu. a brief flicker of disappointment, quickly replaced by curiosity. i ordered an unsweetened matcha latte with oat milk instead. it arrived a calm, earthy green, smooth, balanced, quietly grassy without bitterness. simple and clean. the kind of drink that suits a slow afternoon. outside, tourists wander in from the seawall, cheeks flushed from the breeze. locals claim their usual corners with laptops and well worn books. patio tables fill as faces turn toward the sun. there's a gentle rhythm to the room, as steady as the tide just steps away. no theatrics, no fuss, just good matcha, soft light, and the easy charm of a coffee house by english bay. read more

This place is a real coffee house. I quite enjoy this over the chain coffee shops. It kinda reminds of Central Perk from Friends. You have a very cozy coffee shop with a lot of old wood furniture and warm service from the friendly batista at the counter. This just has a different cozy homey vibe than the corporate chains and unlike the corporate chains this place makes you feel welcomed to stay instead of kicking you out the door after your order to turn over tables. read more

Told by the cashier that Delany's Coffee has been at this location for over 30 years. Hard to believe I have never stumble upon it over the years. Oh yeah there's Milano's couple of blocks away. Place is a warm woodsy joint with guess what wood everywhere. After having just had a fiery Indian meal, I felt I needed something cold to quench the fire and inflammation - iced large 16 oz decaf Americano, despite outside temperature of balmy 4 degrees Celsius. On the positive, they didn't screw up. It wasn't regular it was decaf. Surprisingly smooth and actually had cremé on it. Damn for iced drink!?! That is good baristaing. Good coffee and treats but pretty unpleasant environment. So noisy and noise bounces off the walls it's like trying to enjoy a conversation in a swimming pool With all that coffee making machinery going on on top of it all. Over the years I have spoken to them and twice I have written them emails but never any response whatsoever. I am a senior with mobility issues Delany's is closest coffee shop to me so it would be nice to be able to come here meet friends and have a coffee with them. I can't speak about the coffee here because today I just ordered a yogurt parfait. The Greek yogurt was unsweetened and the granola wasn't the best. There was a small amount of blueberries at the bottom which was not enough to add flavour or fruit content to make a decent parfait. I would say it was fair but not delicious. The sandwiches didn't have a variety of meats, it was a lot of bacon and ham. The Cajun chicken panini didn't look very appetizing either. However, there was a decent amount of locals who looked content enough. It was difficult to choose which restaurant on denman as the waft of several businesses in the area compete for aromas. There was ample table space available to sit down. I had an appointment in the neighborhood so I wanted to come in because it looked busy, but given the options close by I will most likely try another spot next time. read more

Such good coffee! And I do not say that lightly, I try all the places. My go to food is the breakfast croissant (has saved many hangovers). And their pastries are really yummy as well. And can we talk about their coffee sizes? 12oz, 16oz and 20oz!! Incredible. Good seating areas, especially in the summer as you can do some great people watching. Near everything. What a great little spot! I'm usually a bit hard on coffee shops when it comes to my favourite drink - mochas. But Delaney's stands with the best of them, striking a perfect balance between coffee and cacao. Beyond that, the pastries here are excellent - I've tried their brownies and peanut butter crunch bars and both are soft and crunchy in the right spots and full of flavour, without being overly sweet. It's also a really nice location more generally. Staff seem very friendly, there's a big wooden bar with plenty of stools along the window and a larger seating area deeper inside. It's nicely lit and slightly quaint in a way that feels quite comfortable, almost like a little diner. Overall, this may be a new entry among my favourite Vancouver coffee shops. We stopped in on our way biking up to Stanley Park to enjoy an iced coffee. The shop itself seems like it has been there for years and did feel really cozy on the inside. The two baristas here when we visited were overall pretty rude and just generally unfriendly. We ordered two iced Americanos and a peanut butter square to accompany and decided to sit outside due to the vibe. The coffees were fine and hit the spot, the square was really delicious, plus we enjoyed sitting in the sunshine on their little patio outside. Just wish the service was a bit more friendly/polite. read more

Great spot to stop for a coffee! I had an almond milk latte with sugar free vanilla (my go-to) and found the drink to be creamy and smooth. The line was pretty long when I arrived as it was just prior to 10am and I was impressed with the efficiency of the staff- the line moved SO quickly! If you want to sit and stay a while, they have outdoor and indoor seating, including an indoor bar facing large windows that open up in nice weather. The coffee is quite horrendous. They claim they've been voted best coffee on the North Shore... I'm new, does the North Shore not have coffee? The bar must be quite low. Their americanos are harsh and taste burnt. It also doesn't help that the service is unprofessional and passive aggressive. A man cut in front of me, so I asked how the lineup works because I was there first. The man was rude. The cashier was useless. She still processed his order first and wrote a note to me that was basically telling me that that guy is always rude. So he has a reputation for being rude but you do nothing about it? Are you an adult? Do you work here? So childish. Anyhow, what a bad experience. Unprofessional staff, rude patrons that are allowed to be rude to other patrons, terrible coffee... I can't see myself going back there. With places like 49th Parallel and Pallet Roasters, which both have much better coffee and service, why bother going here? Even Starbucks coffee is better. I am through-the-roof impressed with this place! It's a bit inconvenient to get to, but it's totally worth the trek! I walked in and instantly noticed the cozy and comfortable environment -- perfect for sitting down with a friend for conversation over coffee. I ordered a tall single shot mocha, topped with their buttery chocolate whipped cream. All I have to say is that the whipped cream on its own changed my life. I wish I could buy tubs of this and bring it home to eat with everything. I highly recommend this!!!! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND! All caps, clearly I'm serious. I tried my friend's iced chillo, it was DELICIOUS. Next time I visit, I'll order this if the weather is a bit warmer! 10 million stars for this place! I'm almost a regular at this Delany's and the one on the north shore, and I can honestly say that the customer service is great! I had one barista explaining the differences between Cappuccino and Machiato for me in detail and with no attitude either, just a simple explanation. The drinks are made well and to my taste. Be warned though, their espresso is strong so you may want to choose something like a mocha or a latte to cut it a bit. I always find a seat out front and everyone is friendly and there are so many happy dogs to pet :-) Still....... Dulcinea beckons across the street. read more

Recently, I was refused service by the baristas and then mocked by customers and physically assaulted by a man who grabbed my phone. Delany's is a charming little coffee shop tucked in the West End neighborhood. Or to be more precised, tucked in the corner of Denman and Pendrell. It has a very nice inviting atmosphere, with wooden tables and chairs. I myself enjoy having coffee here. Actually there is no excuse not to have coffee here, since I live literally 1 block away. I haven't really tried their desserts and pastries, but the baristas were kind enough to offer me a cinnamon bun on the house (woohoo!). The atmosphere here is notably different from Starbucks. What I've noticed is that there are not as many laptop warriors in here. More people here read the papers and enjoy their coffee, compared to working on their laptops. Which is the point of coming to a coffee house isn't it? Isn't ironic to come to a coffee house and work, when one should be relaxing instead? That being said, Delany's definitely gets my thumbs up, and I will be back more often. PS: They have a nice patio outside, which is excellent when it isn't raining. The coffee is always reliably good. There is a good selection of pastries and snacks. Free wifi, friendly staff, usually able to find seating for at least a group of 2. But most importantly! Their chocolate whipped cream is the bomb. I don't usually like mochas, but I will order a mocha just so that I can have it with the chocolate whipped cream because I love that specific mocha! Also good on blended ice beverages. Also good on regular coffee. Also good on its own... although I have yet to specifically order it that way. I you live in this neighbourhood you've obviously heard of Delany's Coffee House. They're open fairly early and they serve of course decent coffee with space to sit and gather with some friends and have a few muffins or breakfast wraps to jumpstart your day. TBH I don't come down here very often. Maybe once a year but when I do some I'm happy to know that there is a place that still exists that I always like to go to. You see as a Yelper I'm often trying different places but I really enjoy coming back to places that are also familiar and I feel comfy and it brings me back to the days when I lived in this part of town. Sometimes I just need to get away and enjoy my java and people watch. The front window offers such a perfect viewpoint. Washrooms are gender neutral which is a wonderful thing about Vancouver downtown. You need a key which is up at the front counter. I usually get a breakfast wrap. It's predictable and I'm never negatively surprised. I've never been disappointed or felt out of place here, much like another coffee shop on Davie street that I frequent . read more

I haven't been here in years, but I am delighted that I came today! The decor hasn't changed in years, but it's cute and cosy and I always feel at home. I grabbed a decaf iced Americano with chocolate whipped cream because, ya know, why not! It was delicioussss, and that whipped cream is bomb. As one of those laptop warriors, I love this place. C'mon, you know the folks I mean! Everyone sneers at me for working in a coffee shop, yet, they don't realize I work for myself and therefore, this is my work space. Yes, I am truly free. Wahoo! Ahem. Anyway. For those like me, who need a place that's bright, friendly, with great WiFi, close to the beach (for when I'm done work, of course!) and that makes a mean mocha - this is the place. Cherry on top for the chocolate whipped cream on my mocha. Oooooh yes. K, I'm getting a wee bit creepy here... This place really is lovely. The staff are efficient, if swamped at times. The bathrooms are usable and kept clean (keys on the counter, attached to paint brushes). It's got a quiet hum going on... Never have I felt like I couldn't work or talk because it was too noisy... Unlike the Starbucks down the street that's almost always packed. I get interrupted there, often. Here? Never. Different crowd here, too. Hipster ish related mixed with tourists mixed with first dates mixed with solo paper readers. Yes, I realize this sounds like most coffee shops. This place is homier, like Cheers, okay? Delaney's is a microcosm of the West End: it's still quite popular, and it has a quaint charm, but its core demographic hasn't changed in years, and its best days are behind it. Though it's still my "home" café, my initial enthusiasm for it has waned in the two years I've been coming here. While there was a time when I would have given it four stars, over time my impression of the place has been ground down, like so many coffee beans, towards the centre. (Perhaps this would be true of any place I visited so frequently; I suppose that is the unfair fate of those subjected to more business, and more scrutiny). My main, purely gastronomic criticism: the coffee is too acidic. This goes for both the drip and the espresso. Not sure if it's an issue with the roast or bean quality, or the preparation method, but their brew is just a bit too harsh to be considered excellent (sort of like Starbucks). In fact, for this and other similarities, this place is essentially a Starbucks for people who don't go to Starbucks. The differentiator, then, is the food (and the atmosphere). Of particular note is the cinnamon bun, one of the best in the city (second only to Solly's, IMO). All of the baking is in the fresh, homemade style - though I'm not sure it's actually prepared on site. This is a local mini-chain, after all, so it wouldn't surprise me if they were going for some economy of scale in their food production. But unlike other mini-chains such as JJ Bean or Caffe Artigiano, they just don't take their coffee that seriously, focusing instead, it would appear, on food, setting, and service. Personally, I find the atmosphere a bit stand-off-ish, but maybe that's just me. At any rate, it's not often that you can get a seat here, at least on the weekends. It's popular among the grey hairs, gay men, joggers, youngish couples, and other groups that comprise the West End. If that's you, then this is your coffee shop. If not, there's always a Starbucks down the street. read more
