Clearly a popular spot with very quality coffee! I got the raspberry mocha and loved it so much i made it a point to return the next day for another :) lots of great options and although I did not try any pastries, they looked so good! My only complaint is the staffing. The staff was very friendly -- nothing of their fault. But the first day, it took a little bit as there were only 2 (maybe 3) people working and a massive line of people. It was nothing too bad. But the 2nd day, there was literally one person working. She had to take the order, and then go make the order, for each person in line, one at a time. Not only did it take a very long time but I felt so bad for her! This is a really nice coffee place in Gastown, as you can see in the pictures. Easily the best looking coffee shop anywhere I've been. Pretty high end. After dining from one of many countless nearby restaurants and/or after checking out some of the souvenir shops in the area, this is a place where you can relax and sip your favorite espresso, on one of the many comfortable chairs or lounge seats, or on the nice long couch at the back, while having conversations with friends. The ambient music doesn't drown converstions and they have nice lighting throughout the store. I ordered an Americano. Taste is balanced, not too strong, not too mild. The sizes are small though. I ordered a medium and it looks like their medium is an 8 oz. I also tasted the pizza pretzel. It was ok. They have different pastries available but somewhat limited options. Overall, place is great! Service could use a little warmth though, especially a place as nice as this. They just take ur order, no thank you, no is that everything. I realized they close early too on all days, 5 pm. What about the after dinner crowd? That's also just about coffee or tea time for me. This place is recommended but could use some improvements. This place could be amazing! read more

Just walked in not knowing what to order...just knew it had to be cold and sweet. The barista suggested an iced raspberry mocha and he hit it spot on. Honestly, this was the best iced mocha I have ever had. Smooth, chocolate perfection! The hubs had a hot latte and he says it was the smoothest, best tasting coffee he has had in Vancouver (and this guy drinks a lot of coffee). Hands down the best we've had. Topped it off with a slice of lemon/coconut loaf and a strawberry crumble bar (delightful). Such friendly staff. You've really got to drop in! This is one of my frequent place to work or study. First, they have all types of table for you: comfort couch, standard table and chair and standing desk (with chair if you are tired of standing) in their spacious place. Secondly, there are plenty of socket for your laptop so you dont have to fight for it. The internet is stable and music are different everyday. Moreover they are proud of their coffee, but I dont drink coffee so my choice are always tea. So far I chamomile and green tea are my favorite. Their cake are decent and I prefer their carrot cake to others. Last thing, they open until pretty late compare to other coffee shop around this area, so it's better for me if I wanna stay a bit longer in the afternoon. read more

I am suck a picky coffee drinker, that pleasing me tends to be rather difficult. I like my mochas on the sweeter side, which I know is not the standard way. I add chocolate and flavorings and whipped cream and drizzle to make them more like dessert than an actual authentic coffee experience. So now that you know how difficult I can be, the fact I went to Milano's TWICE in two days is a very very VERY big deal. Hubby chose a Hedgehog mocha (hazelnut) and I chose a raspberry one. They were absolutely amazing! Perfect flavor, perfect sweetness. The raspberry taste hit that exact balance without going overboard. It was seriously heavenly. Even coffee drinkers that don't like theirs as sweet as I do would totally enjoy this coffee. The second time I went, I ordered the same raspberry mocha and while it was not as "good" as the one previous, it was still pretty good. If I was a local, I'd definitely make Milano my go-to place. read more

Service is a little standoffish, limited food menu available. But the coffee. Clearly of great quality, single-origin small-batch stuff with great flavor. It was a slight bit more bitter than I prefer, but my guy (the bigger coffee aficionado) was in love with his beverage. Other reviews reference this spot being a hoppin' hangout with loud music, but on our weekday afternoon trip, it was museum-quiet and patrons were focused on reading or getting work done. Great coffee shop with open ventilation and perfect location! I love the fact that it's located inside Gastown and how people are walking by in front of the store with its large clean windows. Their menu is fully stocked with additional different types of mochas. Right now, I'm having a cortado which is served in this glass mug and glass saucer. I'm also sitting on this one-person still with my table being this rustic stone texture and a glass pot of flowers. The atmosphere here is great and I can tell lots of regulars come here. Their espresso machines are up to par with the latest and newest. This is a boutique coffee shop so expect plush seating and gourmet type coffee menu. read more

With the amount of time that I spend working out of coffee shops, I think at this point I can consider myself a coffee shop expert, at least in Vancouver. When I go to coffee shops I base my reviews on a few things: the aesthetic/atmosphere/space, the service, the wifi, and the coffee/drinks itself. Milanos ticks all those boxes for me and more. The space is beautiful. It's spacious and has a bit of a modern industrial look to it. There are plenty of tables and chairs, so I never feel like it's too full. Milanos is also located right in the heart of Gastown, but far enough from most of the tourist attractions so it never feels too busy. The service has always been awesome. There are usually 2 or 3 different baristas working at a time and they've all been wonderful. The drinks are awesome! When I was drinking coffee, their medium roast pour-over was the bomb.com. Ever since I switched over to tea, I've been getting their london fogs with a splash of lavender, and hot damn, it's like floral sweetness in your mouth. They also have a few snacks. If I'm hungry, I usually go for their breakfast sandwich - big, filling, and tasty! This cute spot definitely makes into my top 5 fave coffee shops in the city. I almost hesitated writing this review because I want to keep it a secret and all to myself. But that would be selfish of me and I want y'all to experience the aweseomeness of Milano. I tried my first cortado here and I was not disappointed. That being said, I have nothing to compare it to, but still, your girl can tell when she's drinking a good coffee. Fun twist is that I got it with walnut milk that they make in house - very good, first time trying that as well. Good ambience in the café, a few seats to wait for your drink or set up shop to do some work, or just go on your phone while pretending to do work (aka what I normally do). Friendly and educational staff (I had questions about the walnut milk). A little on the pricey side, but it matched the quality. Lots of windows so it's a bright space and they have lots of other drink options. I will have to try some of their snack the next time I go! read more

Milano is a hipster and pretentious coffee shop in Gastown. At first glance, this coffee shop looks amazing - great interior design and a nice ambiance, but there is a fundamental problem with this coffee shop. I went here to grab an iced coffee and do some work. Barista took my order and was nice but the person making the drinks had a lot of attitude. But I thought as long as I could get some work done I could less that pass. However, the seats here so uncomfortable and don't even match the height of the table so my back was pretty much hunched over the whole time. Meanwhile other patrons are just loud and are equally as snobby. The most surprising thing though is that there is NO air conditioning in this place so it makes it so unbearable in the summer. They do have one portable AC machine but there's no way it could even cool even a fraction of this whole cafe. Doors are open to let air in so it's really all counterproductive. Overall, unless they fixed these things I don't think I'd be back anytime soon. Their iced coffee was pretty standard so I would rather not put up with all of this. For such a beautiful looking place, the delivery falls really short. read more

I'm going to preface this review with the fact that though I put back an ungodly amount of the stuff, I am in no way a coffee connoisseur. I can't tell you tasting notes or varietals. I am a coffee muggle. Though I appreciate the IDEA that you can pick your own espresso bean, I'd have to say for the most part, I don't yet have a palate to tell the difference between the types i've tried. Which lends to Milano's biggest up side - the staff are pretty good with us coffee newbies and always make a point to explain WHY they are suggesting an espresso for whatever drink they happen to be making for me. And muggle or not, they make a damn fine cappuccino and that's mainly what i'm looking for. If you can give me a history to it, great! Just make sure it has caffeine. This place would be pretty high on the list of coffee haunts save for a few things. Like I said, the coffee is tasty and they have a fancy list of 8-9 different beans that you can choose from. It's a good place to take your coffee geek friend to and look like you know what you're talking about. The grub is pretty grand as well. REALLY good banana bread and a tasty matcha rice krispie square that are staples to any one of my visits. Plus, like Our Town they serve wine. Which is just excellent. But the furniture! For shame! Whoever designed this interior put far too many eggs in the stylized basket and skipped the comfort question entirely. Though it LOOKS beautiful, the chairs are awkward and I have yet to see ANYONE partake of the concrete benches. But can you blame them? Concrete benches don't exactly scream, "Curl up with a coffee!" now do they? With their free wi-fi, I would be more then happy to curl up and work away for hours at this place but can never seem to get into a zone - I always feel hunched or forced to "perch", the lights go up and down at bizarre intervals and the music is always blaring. So though it's great for a to-go binge i'd suggest you skip the sit down. read more

Mine include; good customer service, very good coffee, clean, comfortable seating and nice environment to enjoy it in which should also include an available wireless network. What I never expected is what we had the good fortune to experience on Saturday evening; A free musical performance by some astoundingly talented musicians that call themselves Cadabra, a sincerely lovely and appreciative audience of some of the friendliest and classiest folks Vancouver is home to including the cafe designer and both the owners Linda and Brian Turko. Brian has been roasting coffee for 30 years. On offer for the event was a choice of wines sold by the glass as well as the hot beverages one expects to find plus some foods. Attendance numbered just under 60 people and I'm pretty sure everyone enjoyed the night. My face hurt from smiling so much. If you're interested in attending one of Milano's weekend events, keep posed on their Facebook page. Long tables and a plush leather bench and chairs in the back of the cafe offer very comfortable seating and plenty of space to spread out. Very good for business or social meetings. read more

Since we are visiting my sister for her birthday week, we decided to spend time by going for a walk through Gastown. She recommended this coffee shop (as well as others - we decided on this one as it was at the right place at the right time). This was a great break from the rain. The servers were friendly and they offered wonderful coffee! They make it a variety of ways, such as "pour over", or expresso, and they offer the usual Lattes etc. I really enjoyed my Milano coffee. The names of their coffees is also fun: my sister had "Friday the 13th"! We got a couple of treats to go with our beverages, and we were happy to see that they offer gluten free alternatives. We sat in a window seat and enjoyed watching the pedestrians and traffic outside. Like in the rest of Canada, we seem to have two seasons: Winter, and Construction! So it's no surprise that there seams to be a lot of work to rejuvenate the neighbourhood rigtht now, and there's a lot going on. It's an historic neighbourhood so I'm glad of that. Besides, it's very touristy. every few minutes, the steam operated clock hoots, whisltes and steams, which is fun. read more

Want a coffee shop that has amazing interior design and great coffee? Milano is that place! If you're looking for a comfy place to sit for hours on end though, you better head on to a Starbucks or something instead - the seats here are beautiful looking but not exactly the most comfortable. That being said, Milano is very spacious inside and I just feel inspired when I'm in there. Worth the experience! I only had a latte and one of their red velvet loafs - I wasn't blown away by either but they were both definitely a step up from your typical Starbucks and Blenz (especially the coffee). The loaf was a bit dry, but I liked the red velvet flavour. The latte was creamy - excellent foam and good espresso. The latte art was pretty mediocre though. Also, the service wasn't exactly stellar - the barista seemed to be in a bad mood. There are a lot of quality coffee shops around, so I hope Milano really steps up their game to keep people coming. Great coffee beans and decor can only keep people coming back for so long when there are so many other choices around. read more

If I want the best chai latte in town, I always come here. One of the only places that makes it with a tea bag of herbs, rather than a syrup from a container. So delicious. And their treats are also spot on. One of my favourite coffee shops in Vancouver. read more

I really like the vibe of this place. Definitely a little more hipster than the other location near Broadway and has great decor, art on the wall and tables, different seating options, and an interesting menu (Irish bailey's latte!?!? Lavendar white chocholate mochas, etc. :9). The baristas were super friendly and helped me to sort through the many options that circled in my mind and I ultimately decided to get a lavendar lattee with a coffee that had notes of toffee and butterscotch. Unlike other places, we got to choose what espresso beans we got in our drink vs just the house ones, which was awesome.. and wow... the drinks were so smooth and subtle - not acidic at all - I had to think through whether my drink was just watered down or if it was just super smooth - and I think it was the latter and it was great! read more

Update: Have now been 7 or 8 times and the coffee beans are consistently good and the cappuccinos are always well prepared in a more traditional style - rather than the now common latte poured foam decorated style. They obviously know their bean roasting and have a long history of roasting. The filter's for drip coffee is much better than a perculator option. Not really sure about the decor. It is designer generated with some interesting elements but not sure if it works as a place to hang out. Seating arrangements are more for looks than comfort. The high ceilings are nice and the room had great potential. Service is quite good. The food and pastries are predictable but decent quality. They have several selections from Butter on Dunbar. The sandwiches have an Italian flavour which would make sense given their name and roots. Overall I will give them a 4 out of 5 primarily for their coffee quality. Still not sure if I like the room yet as a place to sit and get out of the house for an hour. It is a bit cold but music is not bad and it fits into Gastown as another coffeehouse option. read more

Spacious minimalist loft spot in gastown with fantastic coffee. I love getting the lattés, especially when they have something special like a lavender latté or a raspberry mocha (with little chocolate shavings on top!). The espresso is SO flavourful and fresh. And the drink is made with love right in front of you. Mmmmmmm. The staff is friendly and helpful with recommendations. Food is ok, I've had the little spicy breakfast sandwich and it was a little small and a little dry, but still packs a punch in terms of flavour. Also I've had the little lemon square, which had a thicker cookie bottom than expected but was very very good. I would recommend this spot for someone looking for a really good cup of coffee. Also for people looking to get some work done, there's always people on their laptops there typing away. read more

This is a sweet little spot for coffee in Gastown. The space is open, industrial type interior, and the coffee tastes great. I had a cup of the espresso, which was strong but not over powering. It was exactly was I was desiring in a cup of caffeine. The cappuccino also looked well-made, with foam and sugar atop of it. It's a bright space and inviting, whether you're sipping on a coffee solo, using the Internet, reading a paper or socializing with a friend. Great coffee. Great atmosphere. read more

I didn't know that Milano coffee had been in business before I was even born! (Can you figure out how old I am? :P) I fell in love with their latte a few years ago and I hadn't been able to find a place that does it better yet! I was so excited when Milano Coffee was offering a mocha coconut latte, as they were two of my favourite things in a drink. Hubby's signature drink - a double long espresso - was just how he liked it. Not too acidic, strong but smooth. My drink came out significantly later than hubby's because they forgot about it. The barista asked me what I was waiting for, in which then he started to make my drink. Meh, mistakes happen. Anyway, my mocha coconut latte was exceptional. The sweetness of the coconut enhanced the flavours of the latte very much, but not in an overpowering way. They really do fantastic coffee drinks at Milano, you should really try them out if you haven't already. The cafe is overall a nice place to spend a few hours getting some work done or catching up with colleagues. The espresso lounge was a bit on the loud side because of their music, so many were using headphones. It's not the best place for a business meeting as tables are rather on the small side, but it's perfect to drop by for a cup of java for casual conversations. Service is overall very friendly and they're really helpful about your drink if you have any trouble making a decision. We asked them to clean a table for us and they did right away. If you're looking for a small bite to eat, they also have a great selection of baked goods and sandwiches, but nothing too fancy. read more

5 Stars or in the words of Yelp "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" Obviously Yelpers are an enthusiastic bunch, as you should be with places like Milano. This is one incredibly spacious cafe! The cost per square footage of rent in Gastown is pretty high, so you know they're attracting *a lot* of coffee fiends at this space (assuming it isn't outright owned!). I am going to say this is hands down the best coffee in Vancouver. I am probably right based on the insane amount of awards this place wins for their coffee (just look at their wall of gold sealed certificates for evidence -next to the fair trade coffee art installation holla!). They're currently featuring this blend called "Velvet" oh my lord it is good!! Just go already, and walk all the way to the back to check out the crazy cool industrial design of this place. Raw concrete, variations on the colour grey dotted throughout, strategically placed backlit photography, suspended glass counters, thick wooden beams, high ceilings -- and yes, those pretty little Thomas Edison lights too. The seating is ridiculously uncomfortable and the overall aesthetic will surely date itself in a few years, and it's absolutely not a place to meet with a client or hang with friends -- but I really, really like it here. It's the perfect work space: free wi-fi, excellent coffee, never too busy, never too loud... and those uncomfortable chairs? They keep me upright. Just what a working kid like me needs. Best coffee ever. I came here while visiting Vancouver. A couple of other friends visited earlier and said that it was the best coffee they had ever had so I had to see if they were right. And they were. I ordered the stovetop and it was absolutely delicious. The only drawback about this place is the wait. It was pretty long Saturday afternoon, but still it was worth it. The barista was also very friendly and the coffee was served promptly after I ordered. I would definitely come here again next time I'm in Canada. read more
