fior di latte is such a cute little café tucked into the burnaby heights neighbourhood, and…read morehonestly, walking in with the intention of just grabbing a coffee is a dangerous game. the display cases are filled with tempting pastries, beautiful cakes, and colourful tubs of gelato, all casually sitting there like they're not about to ruin your plans to "just get one thing." good luck leaving with only a coffee.
originally opening as a gelato shop, fior di latte has grown into a neighbourhood café and bakery serving pastries, cakes, sandwiches, specialty coffees, and house made gelato. they bake fresh daily, so whether you're stopping by for your morning caffeine fix or looking for an afternoon pick me up, there's plenty to get excited about. basically, your sweet tooth is going to feel very seen here.
i ordered the almond butter latte, and the first few sips were delicious. it had a lovely nutty richness that made me want to keep going back for more. unfortunately, things took a bit of a turn toward the bottom of the cup, where a generous amount of almond butter had settled. the flavour was there, but the consistency could have used some work. a little more mixing would have gone a long way, because nobody wants their last few sips to feel like they're digging for treasure at the bottom of a mug.
we also shared the coffee bean cake, which turned out to be a mocha mousse layered with a coffee soaked sponge ladyfinger. chocolate, coffee, and a soft, moist sponge? honestly, a pretty solid little trio. it paired nicely with the latte and was just enough to satisfy our sweet tooth without committing to an entire cake. although, with all those other treats staring at us from the display case, showing restraint was already doing some heavy lifting.
overall, fior di latte is a charming neighbourhood spot in the heights for coffee, cake, and a little sweet treat moment. the inviting displays make browsing half the fun, and with freshly baked pastries, cakes, and house made gelato on offer, there are plenty of reasons to come back. i enjoyed the almond butter latte, especially those first few sips, and would happily return to explore more of their pastry and gelato selection. just give that latte a good stir before the almond butter decides to settle down and start paying rent at the bottom of your cup.
