Craving carrot cake? This place has one of the best! I also tried the unsweetened matcha latte which was perfect on a warm summer day. The chicken pesto panini was also very delicious. I preferred that over the Vietnamese sub. I enjoyed sitting in the outdoor patio better than indoors. There are not too many tables outside but there are plenty of benches around this location if you buy to go. The servers are friendly and the service pretty quick for a popular place. This might be my new go-to coffee shop, despite being far from my home, and despite it being a bit pricey, and despite encountering a few glitches with my order. Despite all that, I just LOVE this place! Recently I met a friend here for a late lunch. She lives by the UBC campus. I am quite familiar with UBC but not this particular corner of it. Since the pandemic, I've not gone out much as I'm a bit paranoid about this virus. I've only gone to a few outdoor venues, and it's very important to me that I feel safe in a place. Anyhow, this cafe was wonderful, for so many reasons: -ample, free 2-hour street parking (this was an unexpected bonus. The UBC campus and environs is notorious for pricey parking everywhere). -beautiful interior to the cafe, warm and inviting, with tons of natural light and seating areas. -fabulous menu and offerings of food and beverages. Lots of fresh wraps and sandwiches, pastries (cookies, danishes, croissants, dessert bars), coffees and teas and smoothies, and also ciders (I think I saw craft beers offered, too). -best of all: HUGE, beautiful patio, surrounded by flower gardens, blueberry bushes (with a sign to feel free to pick some!), a water fountain and kiddie playground area nearby (great for families with kids!), and did I mention all the flowers? Seriously, this large patio is out of a cottage magazine, it's so pretty. Like an oasis on campus. And most tables had an umbrella to shield you from the sun, too. So so nice. The staff were super friendly but they didn't direct us where to pick up our order after we placed it (we didn't know which area of the long counter to wait for our foods), nor did we know that we could have sat down outside and they'd have brought our meal to us. (My friend informed me of this later. As it was, my kid and I waited over 10 minutes, standing by the cash, while my friend was outside). Also, I ordered a latté smoothie that was unsweetened, and I had to bring it back for them to blend in some Splenda (they should have asked me prior to making it if I wanted it sweetened. It was like having an icy black coffee. I need it sweeter). I should add that, it turned out GREAT after they fixed it. My kid and I shared two wraps (the turkey and the butter chicken). Each was quite large and cost about $8 each. (We ended up bringing some home). She and I both had a smoothie, and we shared a lemon bar (SO good). It wasn't cheap but it was delicious and the portions were quite ample. I just love this place and I've already told my friend that, despite it being a 20 minute drive from my home, I can't wait to meet up here again. read more

I've had only good-to-excellent experiences with the staff here over the past year or so, so I wanted to bump them up to 4 stars. Everything else in my previous review still stands. They increased their prices in the spring when food costs starting going up, so they're still a bit higher than other coffee shops in the area, at least for the food. Always my go to coffee spot for some midday studying. It's very spacious and there are generally seats available. Also, being on campus means there's usually a lot of other people working on their laptops as well so there's a nice study atmosphere. They also have a lot of outlets where you can charge your electronics. It does get quite noisy sometimes but the chatter is kind of nice. There's a seating limit of 2 hours which is a great reminder for me to take a break from whatever I'm working on. I usually order the latte and it's very consistent and well-made. The baristas are very nice and the service is fairly quick. It is a little more expensive than other cafes on campus and also more expensive than other Bean Around the World cafes around Vancouver, but it's probably to compensate for its large pretty space right on campus, especially being one the very few actual cafes towards the south side. Overall a very convenient stop for coffee and to get some work done between classes~ read more

I feel like this place has gone downhill lately. It was my go-to place, but lately my experiences there have not been so nice. They increased their prices- fine- but they did not change their chalkboard or tell anyone. This was last week- hopefully they have changed by now, but I am not going back. They overcharged a man in front of me who bought 4 hot chocolates because of the price increase, and when he commented, there was no offer to give a refund at all. I had to tell them that what they were doing was really wrong before they offered him some money back. The woman in charge was quite rude. I had their breakfast burrito and it was really greasy. It wasn't my kind of way to start the day. Maybe I should have known better. read more

This is a great place to try out! I've had their breakfast sandwich (BOMB AF) as well as their tuna sandwich (YUMMY AF) and their both delicious! I highly recommend them the most. I've also had their coffee (duh LOL) as well as their London fog latte (which was a feature a while back so not sure if they still have it around) and they were both great. I go here because the food and dranks are delicious, the cafe's a decent size and there are LOTS of chairs. I do recommend this cafe if you're around the UBC area. However, I wouldn't go here on the daily because the items do add up and it can get pretty expensive. If I'm ever tired of waiting in a long a$$ line at Starbucks and Tim Horton's (which is also by this cafe ) my first choice is totally Bean Around The World. Like it said, it can get pricey depending on what you order and how many things you order.. but there's definitely quality in their food and drinks and of course- their customer service. read more

Great coffee and even better customer service! I ordered an iced macchiato - there was a little misunderstanding and I was charged for a carmel macchiato. I had also ordered a sandwich (it was yummy) and didn't notice I'd been slightly over charged. The barista kindly asked me how much milk I wanted (Starbucks adds way too much milk, and now many people don't seem to know what a real macchiato entails). Anyway, once the barista realized what happened, she went to the register, figured out the difference in price, night it to me, and apologized. In a somewhat obscure area of UBC campus, Bean Around the World is the best you can get. Coffee that's better than the nearby Starbucks, good, fresh sandwiches, plus beer! It can get crowded at lunch during the week, full of students with their MacBooks and iPads out... many aren't bad to look at, so not to worry! The Yelper who started this review may have gotten the name wrong. I think the complete name of this coffee shop is Bean Around The World Coffee House & Bistro. Nonetheless, this is a great oasis of a coffee shop. It is a bit off the beaten path, at the edges of the campus. If you don't live on campus you might not know this place exist. This place has great selection of beers and actual hearty meals. There's tons of indoor and outdoor seating. There's also some nice big screen televisions to catch some current events or sports happenings. Since I live nearby, I've walked or bike. I don't actually think there is any decent car parking, which is a negative for those with cars and coming from other neighborhoods. But that's the great thing about coffee shops right, they are meant to be your local spot to get coffee and hangout. Bonus: There is a very active community garden surrounding the patio area, which makes for nice smells and views when sitting outside. read more

I came here for a sunny noon lunch and ordered the following: Tuna Wrap ($8) with lettuce, onion, herbs mayo, and nuts Chocolate Chip Cookie ($2.95) Small Dark Roast (Marine Roast) ($2.20) I was anxious to get a spot on the patio before seats filled up so I ordered something to be served cold and that's how the Tuna Wrap came to be. There was a good mix of tuna with the other vegetables which filled out with a satisfying crunch from the nuts which were either cashews or almonds (sorry nut allergists). I love mayo with my tuna so I thought this wrap was the bomb and the size was pretty good too. I'm a sucker for chocolate and I almost made it to the cashier but caved and wanted to try the Chocolate Chip Cookie. Regrets: none. This was a chewy cookie with chocolate chunks (white and milk) in every bite so I didn't have to go searching. This was also a large cookie and so I didn't have any complaints paying $3 for it at a cafe. The coffee isn't bad either. You'll pay a little more than Starbucks but the selection is good and the Marine Roast I had an advertised smokey taste that wasn't too acidic. Thumbs up for a casual pick-me-up. read more

The vibe here is very chill as it is mostly students. The only problem I have with this place is that there are a lot of students who freeload the internet for more than 2 hours with only one drink in hand. This annoyed my friend and I who just wanted to sit and chill with me. Given the area I am not surprised by the self absorbed demographic that visits here, it's just annoying. I didn't make too much of a fuss about it being on compass, however, I feel that the establishment should say when enough is enough when it comes to extended loitering. I've been coming here for about 3 years. I keep coming back because it has a nice vibe and their drip coffee is decent, plus I am always on campus for school and work. At lunch there is a buzz of conversation and while it can get loud and crowded, this place is pleasant on a rainy day. Pros about this place: I usually like the pizzas, and the espresso drinks are good. Nice background music. Also, they serve beer which is never a bad thing. Con about the Bean is that it is a bit expensive, can get very busy and it can take about 20-30 minutes to get any hot food at lunch time. To go on a tangent, I have tried about 5 of their selection of hot an cold wraps, and each one has tasted either horrible or very bland.. as in no taste at all. I just ordered the Italian wrap and it was so bad I could not take more than 2 bites. I really tried, honestly I did. The food (except pizza) has always been sub-par for me. My wrap looks as if it has been sitting in the fridge (or freezer) for about 4 weeks, despite having been heated up under a grill. The spinach was obviously from frozen. It slithered out of my mouth like a wet pile of seaweed. It was so terrible and it was not the first time this has happened, that I was compelled to come write a yelp review about it. The poor rating comes mostly from the food. Avoid ordering wraps or sandwiches if you want to enjoy your lunch (and keep the rest of it down). Managers could work on improving this. If you're charging $8-10 for a wrap, that should ideally be $8-10 worth of fresh food in my wrap. My advice: come here if you want a cozy spot to drink a coffee, but don't order any food unless it's a sweet treat or a biscotti read more

I would give 3.5 stars. One simple reason: Too expensive. They charge ~$9 for a simple sandwich. Other than that the food tastes fine and the interior looks very nice. A recent experience here sort of soured my outlook on this coffee shop. I came in for a pitcher of beer with a few friends (on a socially acceptable Friday prevening). After taking a few sips we all noticed the beer tasted a little flat, so we asked the manager if she had checked the pressure on the tap recently. She said yes, they had just adjusted it. We told her that it tasted flat. There was an awkward pause, then she reluctantly offered to pour us a pitcher of something else instead. We said yes. She took our pitcher away, and came back a few minutes later with a mug of first beer that we ordered, trying to show and convince us that the beer did not look flat and that we were crazy. She was kind of acting as though she thought we were just some dumb students trying to get free beer. But we kept insisting that it wasn't that it LOOKED flat, but tasted so. After a few minutes of circling around, she gave up, left, and poured us a new pitcher...but only filled it halfway. Pretty poor service - I thought the customer was always right? I mean yes, at least she did replace the pitcher. But IMO the way she handled the situation seemed cheap and rude, especially since my friends and I spend a lot of money in her store on a regular basis. Again, I'm satisfied that she did solve the issue, but there was far too much ado in achieving that, and she made us feel like it was our fault for not knowing what beer is supposed to look like or something. Speaking of cheap and rude. They recently put up signs in the seating area asking customers to "limit their laptop/study time to 2 hours." That is just stupid. I mean sure, it's kind of an unspoken rule in most coffee shops, but blatantly asking customers to leave so they can make more money? Especially on a university campus where people only go to coffee shops because it's a nice place to sit for several hours to do work? Call me crazy but IMO kicking people out of your store is basically customer service no-no #1. Especially if you are spending $15 on a latte and a sandwich. The only reason I keep my rating at 3* is that all the staff (other than the manager of course) are extremely pleasant and very good at their jobs. The quality of the food and drinks here is also very good (again, a testament to the employees). Anyway, it sucks but I will probably be finding a new cafe to hang out in now..although unfortunately this is still the only place on south campus that serves alcohol. But I've come here a few times in the past 5 days, each time trying to pay with my gift card but they told me that the gift cards "don't work yet on their new software". So I had to just pay with another card which I don't think is fair at all. What is the point of having gift cards if you don't let your customers use them?
