Went to Great Dane to get treats for the office and to switch things up from our regular Blue Chip order, and I was so impressed by the size of the cookies and the great taste of all three options. Also randomly got treated twice in a week to their to-die-for chocolate croissants and savoury goods like the cheddar and chive scone and the bacon and egg breakfast sandwich. I swear that the scone has the power to convert anyone who doesn't normally enjoy scones. I especially love the instax wall of all the little doggos that visit the cafe. Its a coffee house. They have coffee. No thrills except for one key point. It is not Tim Horton's. Tim Horton's is the other place to get coffee on that part of the UBC campus. Tim Horton's is a once legendary chain that has been dragged down in the dust by the same people who own Burger King and Firehouse Subs. Burger King used to be good too. Popeyes is the only chain owned by Restaurant Brands International that has maintained its integrity. Happened to be at UBC this weekend. Got some yummy caffeinated beverages and hot freshly toasted focaccia sandwiches! Line up was a bit awkward.. you're kind of forced to stand outside if it's more than 3 people, and then when you're in you have a short time to look at the menu or food case. Got the Jeremy sandwich which was full of flavour and my husband got the ham egg breakfast sandwich. Both great! Our drinks were pleasant. I've been visiting my friend who lives on the UBC campus for years now, meeting her for coffee at a bunch of local cafes - and I never knew this place existed! Where have I been all this time????? And I am a devoted "dog mom", so this place is totally right down my alley! It's tucked away, though, and not so easy to find if you've never been here before, but it's SO worth the time to find it and visit! Hands down, this is the most dog-friendly place I think I've ever been to. Photos of patrons' dogs plaster the walls. Dog notices are posted everywhere. I believe this cafe was named for the owner's Great Dane. People bring their dogs here. It's as dog-friendly as they come. And I love that. The coffee and pastries are fantastic. I hear the lunch sandwiches are good, too. My friend has been here often and says it's consistently good. My biggest issue with this place is the lack of seating. In the summer, sure, you can sit outside on the various concrete half-walls and benches, and there's a large outdoor patio area with a lot of tables and chairs, but in the winter, or on rainy days, there are very few tables and seats here. Great pastry! Solid coffee. I was staying nearby and came to Great Dane several times over several days. I tried the blueberry lemon scone and chocolate croissant. Both were great. Had a latte as well as drip coffee and both were solid. The woman taking orders on my first visit was a bit off--staring into space, forgot my order, but it seemed like a one off. This place is genuinely so amazing. All the workers are so nice! My first time coming here me and my friends got there a few minutes early but they let us in anyways. My second time coming here there was a fire alarm going off in one of the neighboring buildings and one of the employees started handing out cut scones to the people standing outside. I'm breaking up with Great Dane Coffee. Love their coffee, love their treats, but I can't take the random unannounced changes in their opening times any more. I start work at the same time and need to know the place is going to operate on a consistent schedule so I can get to early morning meetings caffeinated. Changes aren't posted on-line, so checking doesn't do a damn bit of good. I'm sure they will survive without the over $1000 a year I spend there on coffee and breakfast and, honestly, I shouldn't be throwing my money around and make my coffee at home, and eat a healthy breakfast. This is a 'must' place to visit at UBC for coffee and baked goods. They have really yummy scones ( the London Fog) and solid coffee drinks. They always have seasonal items and almost everything is made in house! You will often seen local residents and staff visiting this cafe! Fun fact: The great dane is actually in honour of the owners great dane, Lady - who sadly passed away last year. read more

I've been here a couple of times when I'm on campus; Great Dane is in a relatively good spot if you're walking through certain areas, and it has better opening hours than some other coffee shops. The layout is a little awkward - very narrow, and it's unclear where drinks end up when they're done as it seems to change - but overall it's a nice space. The food and drinks aren't bad either - the mochas are nice, if a little heavy on the coffee, and the cookies are simple and sweet. Nothing really grabs my attention or taste buds; other places have nicer drinks or chewier cookies or fudgier brownies or whatever. But this is still certainly a nice place to drop by if you're looking for a coffee shop. read more

I can't tell you how hard it has been trying to find a GREAT coffee place on UBC campus. Finally, I found one. Not only do their London Fogs taste like hot ice cream (à la Earnest), but their Jeremy sandwich and daily-made muffins are scrumptious and keep me full all day long. Bonus: the staff is amazing. Don't even bother going to Uppercase. Just come straight to Great Dane Coffee! The London Fog Latte and their cookies were sensational! I happened to have a BYC coupon to this coffee place and I ordered the London Fog and chocolate chip cookie. FINALLY, I tasted the fragrant Earl Grey flavour from the tea which was accompanied by warm subtle milk notes which did not taste burnt or overpowering. Blenz and Starbucks always presents me with London Fogs with burnt milk or sweet milk with barely any tea flavour. Also, I was so happy I didn't get that milky after taste and I didn't have to wait 3 minutes for my drink to reach an appropriate drinkable temperature. The chocolate chip cookie ( $2.50+ tax) had crispy edges and a chewy centre. It just so happened the cookies were freshly baked when I walked in at around 4pm. Each bite had an explosion of chocolate and boy was that delightful. I wanted to get a brownie but it cost $4 which is definitely not worth the price as I could get a slice of cake with that cost. Cookies at Uppercase are also $2.50 but the chocolate chip cookies there have a cakey texture. Overall I am happy with my order and don't forget to download their app! When it's good it's good; when it's not, it's not. There are very limited options in this area of campus for coffee or something to eat, and most of the time it's not worth it to trek all the way down to MOA's cafe (and I generally suggest that people just skip Koerner's - as per my review of them). They also have a decent amount of outdoor seating, with a fireplace. Their baked goods are fantastic. Brownies, trail-mix "energy balls," cookies... all great. Their sandwiches are also usually really good (if a bit pricey). That said, however, sometimes they cut their bread awkward thicknesses (I once had a "grilled" cheese that was outright soggy because the bread was much too thick). Also, if there is filming somewhere nearby, they often do catering, and that severely depletes the availability of many items. For a coffee shop, they really drop the ball. Their specialty drinks (by which I mean any more steps than "pour the coffee") are solid, but their drip coffee is unpalatable. I essentially run on caffeine, but I've never once actually finished a drip coffee from here. It is so acidic that I find it sour, which is something I've never experienced elsewhere, and it is like that EVERY time, so that's just what they're going for, I guess. It's a little pricey, but if you need something then and there, it is fine. I do occasionally stop in on my way home to pick up a brownie or something for after dinner, but I look elsewhere when I'm specifically looking for coffee. read more

Reasonable prices for their coffees. It's always perfectly pulled shots here - never burned. The food is really solid - I've never had something I didn't like. My favourite item is the vegan brownie because it's chocolate-ly, super moist and so reasonably priced. I like the atmosphere. It's cozy and intimate, simple. You can see outside and you don't feel closed off from things. There's no pretension - the people here are friendly. The only drawback is that it's a little small and is crowded on cold days, such that you might not be able to enjoy your coffee inside. read more

I went here to grab lunch in between classes. My first thought was that the food menu was completely underwhelming. There is a moderate selection of baked goods, but the options for actual meals number maybe six. There was a yummy sounding salad, but I didn't think that would be enough for a meal. They also had a three-cheese grilled cheese sandwich that sounded good, but $7.50 seemed a bit steep for a sandwich that isn't accompanied by anything (I asked, hoping maybe a little side salad would be included). I ended up ordering a breakfast wrap as potato, egg, cheese, and veggies sounded like a complete meal and it was only $6. The best I can say about the wrap is that it was edible. I was disappointed and didn't end up finishing it as it just wasn't that good. Overall, I was very disappointed. I entered really hungry and left looking for something else to eat. Service was friendly and the location is cute and very clean. This is more of a pick up and go type of place as opposed to a cozy coffee shop where you go for a sit down with a friend etc.. Their coffee was good , I had their cappuccino, it had nice flavour and came with a cute design in the foam which is always a nice touch. The grilled cheese was tasty, nice crisp on the outside of the bread and gooey flavourful mix of cheeses inside and the portion size was enough to be filling. The only complaint I have is that they are a little on the pricey side for both food and beverages (2 grilled cheese sandwiches and 2 coffees came to about 30$). All in all the quality and service was there but this definitely wouldn't be my first choice around UBC because of the pricing, since there are other options in the area that are just as good on quality but are more fairly priced. read more

I loved it. My new favourite place for grabbing a coffee at UBC. It's an extremely tidy, comfortable space -- even a patio with a fireplace for chilly Autumn days -- with a versatile selection of soups and sandwiches, with some reasonable vegetarian options. My own drink of choice is a soy iced latte, and I thought it was excellent. Really fresh roasts with a proper coffee bite. I'm not an aficionado: I can't give you a cigar-style review of the brews. I just thought it was a very nice cup of coffee from a really, genuinely friendly set of staff. They were lovely. It wasn't crowded with the usual UBC FaceBookin' laptop crowd. There's a good selection of tables and the pace of service was good.
