I had a PD course at UBC and they ordered catering from Loafe Cafe. Loafe Cafe is located on campus and they do have some good selections of sandwiches and pastries. I got the roast beef sandwich and the macadamia chocolate cranberry cookie for lunch. The cookie was super tasty. The sandwich was a bit sad. It had a lot of bread and not much meat inside. For breakfast I had their spinach and cheese pastry and that was good. Their yogurt and cereal was standard. This place seems to be a hit for students on campus. read more

Conveniently located centrally on campus at the Univ of British Columbia, Loafe offers up seating both inside and outside the cafe. Instead of the traditional avo toast, I decided to opt for a different take - the mushroom ricotta toast, which was absolutely delicious. Considered that it wouldnt come with enough greens, I ordered a side greens kale/brussel sprouts salad, which was also delicious. Throughout the pandemic, the only regular human contact I've had was with my friend Jane who lives on the UBC campus and works from home. Every month, we'd go for coffee. We both agreed, we need to dine outside. So it was critical to find a good coffee place that had ample outdoor seating and was close to UBC. Loafe became our regular go-to spot. The reasons we love this place are many. Aside from the substantial outdoor seating sections, we love how friendly the counter staff is. We usually are helped by a young woman and she is the NICEST (I wish I had her name). We love that there is a reward program; I think every 10th coffee is free (I give Jane the card, so I don't recall the specifics. I know we've gotten 3 free coffees over the course of the past 18 months!). Every food item or coffee we have had from here has been excellent. The avocado toast is delicious (I share this with Jane a lot). The muffins and croissants are always fresh and perfect. Oh, and the chia latte here is probably the best I've had in the city. I stopped by here for an iced americano. The barista was very sweet and told me that they offered a variety of milks (non dairy as well) which was helpful. I ended up getting it with regular milk and some vanilla syrup. The small ended up being $4.66 which was a bit expensive, the coffee was good but nothing to write home about and I wish it was a bit sweeter. A few months ago I was at UBC for a grad ceremony & our group dropped in at Loafe Cafe for something to eat. I'd wanted to try their Scallop Po Boy but it was sold out. So I settled for the Smashed Avo Toast! It was spectacular - loved it! Sprouts, avocado, laid out on cranberry & walnut toast - wonderful! So here I was again back at Loafe Cafe on this beautiful late Summer day in September. Actually it's the last day of summer! And so I ordered exactly what I had last time - Smashed Avo Toast - & it was just as good as the last time I had it! Now if you're a big breakfast eater, this item will not fill you up. However, I was satisfied! Loafe Cafe is located in the Robert H Lee Alumni Centre building. This is a new building next to the new Student Union building. UBC has really transformed itself into the present & future over the last few years with some really cool decor swanky buildings! This joint is hopping busy with adequate seating inside & out. Loafe Cafe is a bright clean & scenic place to have coffee, or a bite to eat & just hang out. Because of its central location close to the bus loop & nearby UBC bookstore, quick access to Main & East Mall thoroughfares, it gets very busy with students coming & going. Even with a limited menu I still give Loafe 5 stars - quality, service, decor, atmosphere & location! I had a Cuban pulled pork sandwich here. It was delicious, but very messy and saucy. Maybe don't order this right before you have to teach, especially if you're wearing a white shirt. Also, they have mimosas and happy hour specials. What are you doing with your grad school years if not happy hour? Not a huge beer selection, but a good one. Currently one of three places on campus to go for drinks (a fourth is set to open this spring). Of them, I'd say this one strikes the best balance between food quality and prices. I haven't tried the po'larizing po' boy, but I wanted to slip it into my review anyway. Meals are in the $11-12 range, which I think is pretty okay for cafe food. I wish there was whipped cream on the mocha, but it tastes nice. Staff are pleasant. Because it is such a popular place, it can get loud and a bit difficult to find a seat. When the weather is reasonable for sitting on the patio though, this is a great place to do so! read more

I visited UBC and walked around at different places today. Lots of cherry blossoms and beautiful gardens. Got some fresh air and saw some unique buildings especially the new one Student Union Building (SUB). This cafe is located at the corner of SUB on the ground floor. It has a very cozy and contemporary interior design. When I first stepped into the cafe, the ambiance was very comfortable. It was probably not too busy when I was there. I could sit and enjoy a quiet moment. I ordered a cup of latte that had a rabbit design! That was very unique! I usually see a heart or a leaf shape of design in the latte. The quality of their latte was excellent. A regular latte costs $3.75. A large one is $4.75. These prices are affordable. There are tables and chairs inside and outside the cafe. I would highly recommend this cafe that students can sit here, enjoy a cup of coffee or beverage or even some pastry or bakery goods, and do the homework on your laptop or research and etc. read more

Such a great snack place and study location on UBC campus! They have the best london fog's on campus, hands down, which is my favourite drink, and their croissants are DELISH. It's usually a little busy, but if you're just with one or two people you can usually find some space. Lots of people study here because it is so central and aesthetically pleasing. Also great lattes, but I'm loyal to my london fogs. They also have some lunch options, I remember getting this apple, brie, arugula open faced sandwich and it was pretty good. I really like this place, but 4 stars because it is a little more expensive and as a university student it is more of a treat than a constant. But if I ever want some really good bakes goods and decent lunch options, I head over to Loafe. read more

We had brunch here on Saturday and it was quite empty inside since the weather was nice out. Wasn't too sure what to expect but we ended up gettin the avo toast + chicken & waffles. ($9.50 each I believe) Avo toast : fantastic hearty crunchy bread, creamy avocado, and a little bit of spice. Subbed arugula for sprouts. Overall good but not great. Chicken & waffles : Amaaazzzinnng!! Super duper hot crispy and crunchy perfectly seasoned chicken and soft eggy waffles drizzled with honey. Absolutely delicious. Perfect. I'd come back here just for the chicken and waffles. They didn't have iced coffee so I got a cold brew ($3.75). It came in a bottle which was unexpected but it was pretty good for sure. This new cafe opened up, and I heard it was nothing like any coffee out at UBC that has been offered before. So, being a coffee lover, I just had to check it out. I thought to myself, "It couldn't be good, right?" Parking? That stinks. It is UBC. Duh. Thank you, Car2Go for having convenient spots nearby! :) I ordered the espresso ($2.25), with great doubt I may add. Yes, the cafe looked modern and third wavey, but come on, this is UBC. It couldn't be good, right? I noticed they were serving Pallet beans - which was an interesting choice that made me really wonder, will they be handling the beans correctly? The guys at Pallet seem pretty fussy about letting their beans get mishandled, so perhaps? But no, it couldn't be, right? While waiting for the espresso I filled a self-serve glass with water from the nice glass serving container which was filled with water and orange slices. Nice touch - but just decoration dressing, right? I assured myself, "The coffee couldn't be good, right?" The barista called my name, and I picked up my espresso. The crema actually looked good. The quality of the bread they were using is good - thick, fluffy and fresh(It's important!) and the pork goes well with caramalized onion. 5 stars for the beautiful building and environment. A little less for the crowds! Located in the alumni building, this cafe is perfect for grabbing a bite or coffee! There is limited sitting in the front area, but if you go around the sides into more of the alumni lobby/lounge, there is more. It is so beautiful for a campus cafe. A gorgeous artificial fire is the centerpiece of the lounge, connecting the rooms all together. A baby grand piano plays by itself, filling the room with a special ambiance that makes it feel like you are at a nice hotel in the mountains. The view or campus is great as all the windows are large and let in plenty of natural sunlight. My only complaint was how crowded it was. My friend and I had to borrow to chairs from a table and sit near the fireplace (which honestly was lovely in it's own way) but it would have been nice to have had a place to officially sit. I've only ordered beverages, but the food menu appears to be pretty large for a cafe. I will update this later when I've tried more items, but felt like it was worth writing about the environment for now! read more

Didn't have to wait long for good even with a steady flow of customers. Self serve lemon water was nice. Nice view with the glass walls all around. Delicious baked goods including their danishes, cinnamon scrolls and croissants! The pastries are nice and buttery but the cinnamon scroll was not to sweet and mixing some cinnamon flavour but still scrumptious! Unfortunately, their service is inconsistent with some extremely friendly baristas and some who are rude and a little bit obnoxious. Since I come by for the cheap evening deal (50% off), i sometimes come a little before 5 and the previous few times, the people at the front were extremely kind and gave me the discount early. Today though, i arrived early and was turned away, fine that is reasonable, but when it was 5PM and i returned, i received extremely rude service with hardly any more than receiving my order and no indication after I paid (thank you, goodbye?). The barista's attitude had that "too good for you" aura since I was buying discount pastries. I like a good deal, is there anything wrong with that? My fave new spot on campus! Finally a cafe at UBC with good substantial food (I.e a complete meal and not just a pastry) and strong espresso. They've got delicious looking breakfast sandwiches and waffles, and some amazing sounding sandwiches for lunch. I opted for a flat white and the smashed avocado toast - both were beyond expectations. They serve booze too - so maybe a good spot to stop for a drink in the afternoons. Today was my first visit, but it definitely will not be my last. read more

My experience at Loafe was alright. The location is actually very pretty with alot of seating indoors and outdoors. Service was friendly and efficient. The food wasnt bad by any means but I just found that it was a tad overpriced for what you get. I came here for breakfast and had the smoked salmon sandwich with homemade boursin cheese and arugula and an iced coffee. I also tasted the breakfast sandwich with egg and chorizo. The smoked salmon sandwich was not bad , the arugula was fresh and the homemade boursin was probably the best part. But, the bread wasnt as fresh as I would have hoped and the smoked salmon was fine but there was so little of it that it got lost among the bread , arugula and cheese. (definitely this item on the menu is overpriced for what you get), The iced coffee was well prepared but really nothing to write home about and they dont fill the glass even close to all the way. The breakfast sandwich with Chorizo was more worth the price, the sandwich was very tasty and generous with all the ingredients , the brioche bread was much more fresh and the portion size was enough to be pretty filling (this option was way more worth it for the price and quality). First of all, consider this: this is supposed to be a cafeteria for students. Majority students are too broke and drowning in dept to think about free range eggs and $9.50 avo toasts. The food itself isn't bad but the prices are high and portions are small. This is mostly our only option. The staff is uneducated about the food their serve (for instance I'm gluten intolerant and the staff tells me "this and that should be GF but they are not sure? Pretty wack for a place that advertises themselves as conscious and organic and whatnot). Some of the cooks (or specifically white dude with a beanie) is incredibly rude to the customers and on multiple occasions I have seen him eat out of what seems to be the containers for storing food (licking the cutlery and putting it back into the container, yum!). What I'm assuming is the manager, as he never wears an apron is an actual jerk. A dude with long hair, and glasses. Whenever he makes the food the portions are even smaller. One time I ordered scrambled eggs and it was barely an egg. Two bites. I really don't like that guy. I feel bad for the nice staff, from what I'm hearing they get paid min wage or not much more than that. So that's also pretty f-- wack. Overall, it is messed up that the only on campus option the students have is overpriced yuppie food. On the other hand, I finally use the kitchen at home since y'all f--- trash. read more

The location is great, and seating is mostly pretty good, as long as you don't mind sharing a table with others sometimes. Like others have said, the atmosphere here is pretty nice, with a great design to the location overall. I have had both filtered coffee and espresso drips at this location. The filter coffee seemed to be pretty bitter, as if it was a little burned, or its been sitting for too long. The latte I had did not taste particularly creamy, and was very typical, something that I would be able to make at home. Another reason I am giving this location two stars is that just up the road is JJ Bean coffee, where the location is almost as good (equally stylish), but the coffee is far more consistent and overall a better bang for your buck. I really like loafe, the food is great and the location in the Alumni is fab - I must have eaten here 20 times. However, I've just had the Sriracha chicken served frozen. Previously they had kogi chicken which was my favourite but I had this served raw one time. That does give Loafe an overall 10% failure rate to serve SAFE and satisfying food. Both times I was offered an apology and a replacement but no refund or other offer was made. Not sure if I will eat here again due to the high failure rate... read more

Good coffee! Food is overpriced though, but it's UBC so everything is overpriced. They recently started a stamp card for buy ten coffees and get a drink for free. Which is a nice bonus! Sleek hipster-ish cafe in and around the UBC area. Been here once to meet up with a friend who lives in the area. They made a decent late, however, not a lot of drink selections on hand. Decent pastries but there are other areas in and around the area worth exploring for eats. LOTS of people just bumming wifi for hours. I did feel healthy when eating here which was a big plus for me. read more

My fav item here was the waffles, but today I saw they were taken off the menu. I tried the coffee toast replacement but it was not the same. Hope the waffles come back -- I did notice the recipe changed a bit over the last couple months and weren't as good, and occasionally substitutes were made that didn't make sense (i.e., honey, walnuts), if there was a dip in sales maybe that was why?
