Despite the name, Kranky Cafe is staffed by the nicest, most pleasant people you will find anywhere. The vibe they've created here is everything you could want from a community cafe. I was made to feel so welcome from the first time I walked in, and since then the baristas have cared enough to remember me, learn my name, ask how I'm doing/what I'm up to and follow up on it the next time I'm back, which is sometimes a month or more later. I've really never been to a coffee shop where the baristas show such genuine interest in customers. I'm not naturally very outgoing so I usually don't really get to know staff at cafes that I frequent, but it's not like I feel like these people are forcing me to converse with them, they're just really nice and it is infectious! As wonderful as the people are, I wouldn't be coming back over and over again if the food wasn't equally as wonderful, but it absolutely is. Their baked goods are homemade and it's very evident in the quality - everything tastes so wholesome! The sandwiches and wraps are great - the Big Veg sandwich, my favourite, is a killer vegan option. And they make good drinks too. The espresso drinks are pretty standard but brewed strong (but not TOO strong), and I think all the tea drinks (including the tea lattes and just straight-up tea) are excellent. They offer a lot of variety in the menu. It's not a vegan cafe (there are plenty of meat options) but there are some very good options for vegans: an assortment of vegan baked goods and two vegan sandwiches. They whip up new things from time to time. It's pretty small inside but they have a lot of patio space for when the weather's decent. They have blankets you can use to keep warm. I love the vibe, it's colourful and cozy inside and the patio has a rustic garden feel. This is the place to visit if you need to lift your spirits. read more

We rode the bus over to Mt Pleasant to explore the area and Kranky came with some terrific reviews. Usually I am anti going to an establishment that uses a K for a C or Z for an S but when you want coffee, you want coffee. It's small, only a couple tables and a few seats at the counter by the window so it's a crap shoot if you're going to be able to sit and enjoy your libation. We got some coffees, hung out and took a load off of our feet before going back out to explore. Staff was friendly and from what I heard, they know their customers and have that personal touch. I don't know if I would make a special trip here but if I was in Mt Pleasant again I would most definitely stop by. read more

A small quaint cafe situated in Vancouver's Mt. Prospect neighborhood offering pastries and drinks. I had a great experience despite trying to wake up after taking the bus and walking around the neighborhood. The two ladies behind the counter were down to earth and accommodating. There were a number of regulars that popped in judging from the level of conversation they had at the counter. While I really don't seek out coffee shops/cafes, it's nice to know there is one just around the corner from the action. My latte wasn't too coffee-y. It could had a little bit of syrup along with some odds and ends. However it did its job and woke me up for the day and gave me fuel to invite the day. Despite its name I did not experience any of the cranky part at all. Whenever I'm in the neighborhood I'll swing through again and try other things on the menu. read more

-Food i had the maple bacon wrap, mid at best, but does the job sustenance wise. but i wouldn't put my money towards an overpriced mid-wrap or coffee again in the future. -Service was worse than the food, but i'll give them the benefit of the doubt any day as someone who has worked in service, but i don't think it should take that long for a simple cappuccino and to warm a pre-made wrap. they served a whole four customers (cashiered and coffee/food) before they were able to get to my order because they "lost the ticket" only then served me when they noticed after the little rush that i was still sitting there in front of them waiting for my order after all the others had been served. -Ambiance, a place you could go to if you decided you had the time to wait 20 minutes for a coffee while visiting a friend or a distant relative, then this place wouldn't be so bad in that context. read more

the staff here are 100% the best. Always with the information and the hot flowing caffiene. I enjoy this place when I have a little time to enjoy the chill vibe and open windows to 4th Ave East. I like the maple breakfast wrap, ...it can be rich somedays so not choice if you like lighter fair. I read here, and chat with the staff sometimes. Is a clean choice, coffee is made to order and they have some good muffin/cookie choices you can check out as well. Definitely a place to have a quick stop for coffe, ..rarely a line for ordering. Quiet rainy early Saturday morning. Acoustic music on, neighbours drifting in and out - one fella even came in wanting to buy a little some milk for his baking and they managed to hook him up. Espresso (Moja beans) perfectly pulled. A satisfying ham and egg breakfast sandwich. Friendly attentive staff. Cities need places like this. Little spots of friendship and warmth and quiet. While staying in Vancouver, I wanted to find a place for my morning brew. This place was AMAZING! I arrived only 15 minutes after it opened and it was packed! It is a little tucked away and you could easily miss it if you weren't looking for it. I had a cup of their drip coffee, one of their famous fruit bars and got a cookie to go. I enjoyed this breakfast while sitting outside among the flowers and other customers. I will be dreaming of that fruit bar until I return to Vancouver again. It was absolutely delicious! Great opportunity to run into staff and students but it's also a really chill place to hang out. Kranky cafe is a cute little coffee shop with quirky but cool Decor. And when I say little, I mean it. The place is really small but in some aspects I like it - makes it feel more cozy. Almost everyone I came across in here was very nice and it all made the coffee shop feel like a small-town hidden gem. The coffee and food is pretty good but I wouldn't say it's anything too special. Chocolate cake and cookies are great though. Also, apparently they serve alcohol in the afternoon but I personally didn't have an opportunity to try coming here during those hours. read more

Wandered into this cute little cafe after parking around the corner. I didn't try the coffee, but since they're brewing local beans from Moja and Republica, you know the coffee will be superb. The server was very friendly and persuaded us to try the "mystery" bumbleberry pie. It was delicious. The oat crumble topping was tasty and crunchy. You get a very large slice for $5. After one bite, my sister also ordered a slice to go. My only negative is that the bottom crust took a bit of work because it was a bit chewy, but not a deal breaker in my books. What a cute coffee shop! The place doesn't seat maybe more than 15-20 people, the decor is very earthy and clean which makes for a relaxing environment... They have LOCAL MOJA COFFEE, I was so excited when I realized they used a local North Vancouver brand because they have the best coffee hands down! The baristas know how to perfectly make the coffee which is a hug bonus as most places down fall is an improper brew. The sweet spot for moja is 24 second poor which they do perfectly here! The staff were minimal but very efficient and friendly, they carry vegan friendly and sugar free treat options so everyone can enjoy. Bring a book and erase all plans for the day, you'll catch me at this coffee shop. Only down side is the small seating options, during certain points of the day it's really hard to get in line to order a drink let alone find a seat. read more

Came here with my bf on a Friday afternoon after our trip to Science World. Cafe was quite busy when we got there but we managed to find seats because people were just taking things to go. I had a dark roast coffee, and a vegan chocolate chip and espresso cookie to share while my bf had an iced mocha with soy milk and a curry chicken puff pastry to share as well. His iced mocha was quite tasty and it wasn't too sweet. The curry chicken pastry was absolutely delicious! The curry wasn't too strong and it had a good amount of spices in it. The chicken was moist as well. There were two other options for this curry pastry: vegetarian and beef but the barista said the chicken was the best and he was right. After our little savory snack, we dived into the vegan cookie which was pretty big. We actually aren't vegans but it was the espresso part that caught my attention because I love any desserts that have any sort of coffee in it. The cookie was a bit of a disappointment. Don't get me wrong, it was tender and chocolaty but we could barely taste any espresso :[ I tasted more chocolate than anything which isn't a bad thing because I do love chocolate but it got too sweet as we kept eating it. The espresso would of helped a lot since it would help cut down the sweetness and provide some flavor other than chocolate. If I would of known, I would of gotten a regular chocolate chip cookie instead. Overall, very cute hipster cafe and curry pastry was so yummy. Even though the vegan cookie was a bit of a let down, I wouldn't mind trying their other cookies because they weren't expensive and they were quite big! read more

Oh panini. I do declare, the best tomato bocconcini and basil sandwich I have had the pleasure of consuming. Perhaps my famished frame contributed to its deliciousness, but all the qualities were present: soft but crunchy focaccia, fresh tomatoes and basil, and most importantly, the softest, freshest cheese! Kicking Horse coffee in the percolator, baked goods, soups and breakfast sammies also adorn the tight menu. A new find, and a definite fave. Small, quiet but with a pretty darn good playlist on the speakers, cheerful staff, cool relaxed vibe and hodgepodge decor, fresh and tasty Kicking Horse beans (I love the Three Sisters blend - it's what I buy and brew at home) and baked goods that range from just plain good to good-for-you (gluten/sugar free or vegan) if you so desire. Heartier food like sandwiches, quiche, soups, and even beer (!) are available too. All of this, located right around the corner from my new place of study at Nimbus. They even give students a discount, and there's a stamp card program to benefit from as well if you end up becoming a frequent flyer. Though I do love the carefully hand-poured artisanal coffee and delicate pastries I can get steps from my door at Innocent Coffee, Kranky pulls off a feat by having a fleshed out food/snack menu as well as pouring a decent cup and being better suited to hanging around with classmates. Yes, it's "yet another off the beaten track/hideaway places" It's small: very neat, petite + discreet I discovered this place 2011 whilst on business-contract so explored nearby & stumbled upon Kranky! Tucked at street level of a corrugated metal boxy industrial-style live/work loft building, mid block east of Main St. ( may be easy to miss if not walking). Menu: - a simple, gorgeous selection of home-made style baked goods; - decadent Chocolate cake to die for - various vegan selections equally delicious. - love the lamb sandwich myself [sorry vegans) & their breakfast sandwich - thrown on panini grill ~ yum-o-licious. When in lower Mount Pleasant area, close to E.2nd + Main. Drop in for a decent Java & cool art displays with vintage artifacts by colourful local cal artists, designers and craftspeople. Seating is pretty limited. It's not baby buggy friendly nor the place to go for a meeting w/ more than 3 people in group. There's no actual outdoor seating nor patio. No Vehicle parking just City's meter-pay on street parking. Kranky's pretty much up set up for quick stays or take aways back to home, studio/l, or office. read more

I am eating the best gluten free cookie I've ever had at a cafe. It is peanut butter chocolate chip, and doesn't taste gluten free in any way, but apparently, it is! I am super impressed. I do wish they had more gluten free options, however. I'm also drinking an Americano, and it is tres tasty as well. Not too strong, not too weak. The decor in here is pretty cool: mismatching furniture, random pictures on the walls, a little bookcase (which is actually a book exchange!), and a picture of Justin Bieber taped to some espresso contraption for all to see. These folks have a sense of humour. The two girls who are working here right now are very chatty - but not with the customers. They seem to be more interested in whatever they want to talk about together, which has always been a bit of a pet peeve of mine, coming from doing years of customer service...But at least they're not rude or grumpy with the customers. The bathroom walls are indeed all chalkboard paint, and there are messages a plenty, so I didn't actually add one. The only thing about this place is it's tiny. There is 1 medium sized table with a corner booth, 2 small tables, and a small bar by the window. I can imagine it can get packed pretty quickly, but it's in a strange location so I don't know if it ever really gets busy. I haven't been here when it's busy yet, as this is my first time coming in. The location is off Main Street and close enough to Broadway and Main that it might get some foot traffic, but I think you have to really know it's here. I hope it doesn't get too busy, though, because this could definitely turn into a frequent spot for me to get some writing done simply because it's so quiet. I'm diggin' it. I'll be back. read more

Kranky.....yes you are. I walked in and the lady was cranky toward me, not in theme of the coffee shop. here is how the conversation went. Me: I would like an 8 oz London Fog. Her: Small or Medium Me: 8 oz Her: Yes, small or large. Me: I am reading off the board, whatever 8 oz is. The whole time she was cranky about it to me. Me: Are you having a bad day. Her: Yes sorry. The human being in me asked if she was having a bad day simply 'cause even when someone is being rude to me I hate passing judgement. I am the type of person by human nature to try and work things out. Turns out she was having a bad day and perhaps just needed someone genuine to ask her if she was okay which I rarely see people do as part of the human condition. Whomever put her in a bad mood, the bad customer, I am having an imaginary ass kicking session in my head. She genuinely apologized. Normally I would take marks off when someone is rude to me but when someone apologies from the heart that can easily turn a situation around. I know what it is like working in retail and being on the other end of that conversation. She made my London fog perfectly and even went the extra mile to put in my sweetener while hot so that it melted perfectly. The only reason why I found this place was 'cause there was a Sandwich board on the corner of E 4th and Main otherwise would never have thought to look in this corner to begin with. The place is small, some snacks including a vegan brownie and some sitting room. I will be back for another drink and to finish my art piece. read more

The shorter of the two regular gals is not very welcoming or customer service inclined...unable to even muster up a simple hello when you walk up to order. I'm at Kranky's pretty much every day. Highly recommend the Mexican wraps for breakfast, quiche for lunch, and the vegan brownie for a sugar rush. Order "Heaven In A Cup" - just do it (iced vanilla latte). So good. They have started doing monthly live music nights. Awesome spot. read more

A cozy neighbourhood hide-away, where I can get a great cup of Kicking Horse coffee and have a fun conversation with neighbours and the owners of the place. The place is small, the setting intimate, and the few tables outside are lovely when the weather is warmer. The baked goodies are delicious and they are made right on the premises, fresh. This is a new Cafe / Bakery on East 4th - about a half block east of Main. I've made a few trips across town to visit this little gem. The baking is done on-site, and is excellent. The coffee is Kicking Horse Coffee. It's the only coffee I've had that leaves me wanting more, and the Kranky folks make a perfect cup. The atmosphere is charming. Having been open for barely a month; it feels as though the place is nicely broken in, and has been there for years. The music selection is eclectic, from past and present, and inspiring. Very easy to linger and procrastinate your time away at Kranky. I'm giving this place an enthusiastic 4 stars. As it is still new, I'm reserving the fifth star to give the cafe time to settle in, and fine-tune things. I'd go here everyday if it were in my neighbourhood. I wish it were. But I look forward to, and make a point of stopping in when I happen to be in the area. read more

This is a cute and cozy little coffee shop just east off Main St. It reminds me of little independent coffee shops you might find in a small town. I had a medium latte (it was strong) and a piece of sour cherry pie. It was really good; I liked the brown sugar oat crumble topping on the pie. It was hard to decide what treat to order because all the cookies, squares and brownies looked so good! There are some sandwiches and wraps, too. I'd like to come back again to try more goodies. Its pretty good for a burrito and a coffee. Seems sort of home made stuff vs big box chain. Its a nice place to sit for 15 mins and scarf something. Very small, very casual. read more
