This is literally the first cafe house that I visited, after coming to Vancouver from India. The coffee here is pretty great.

Thank god for Great Dane....seriously, there is no where else on campus that you can get a good cup of coffee. They make really nice espresso, have good food, good service, and are very reasonably priced for UBC. I will walk 15 minutes across campus just to avoid going somewhere else. My only complaint is that the newer and larger location (yes there are two and they're located next to each other) doesn't have wifi. Hopefully they set that up soon, as it is otherwise a perfect place to do some work. read more

I come to Great Dane almost every morning/noon I have class. Everything is good. From the london fog scone to the turkey sandwich to the Veremy to the Jeremy to every single espresso drink to even the iced green tea... Everything is perfect, I meant. Yes the food wait is bad but what you get trumps all those wasted minutes! The london fogs here are the best fogs I've ever had - they steep the tea first for a few minutes before pouring in the milk and that makes all the difference. My go-to's are still the iced lattes and finally after seven months they have their ice machine fixed! Great Dane is sometimes my only motivation to come to school. read more

The coffee is solid from this place and I like that I can get a flat white. The flow of service sometimes seems to struggle at Great Dane. Don't get me wrong, the staff are friendly, but the physical space seems to make it tough for everybody behind the counter to do what they need to do. I haven't tried the food. This is my favourite place on UBC campus: coffee is fresh: Bows and Arrows, roasted on Vancouver Island. The baked goods are made right there. I stayed on campus last summer and enjoyed watching staff do the baking. On busy days you might not find a seat, but I love this cafe. UBC has needed a place like this for years. read more

This is one of the few places in Vancouver that I've found makes a proper Flat White. The kind of Flat White that is approved by real Aussies and doesn't accidentally resemble a latte. A flat white is NOT a latte. Great Dane's beans are Bow and Arrow and the quality is evident in all of its espresso drinks. I would go there more often but it is $$ when you add in a scone (e.g. Orange cranberry or Raspberry and White Chocolate??) or another tasty baked good. Well, they're actually more like Starbucks prices when it comes down to it but the quality is worth the dollars. Since they opened their beverage and quick food location and moved the more meal like options in to the next building over, the wait for my morning drink has decreased significantly but there can still be a line up out the door depending when you come. read more

Pretty reluctant to give a shout out to this gem of a coffee shop on UBC's Point Gray campus. But, let's face it, as today's 3 PM rush proved to me, this place has been found out. Great Dane has great service: really, it's the folks who work here--wish I could name names--who make this place worth going to. As I mention in my review of Blue Chip, I save cash by bringing my coffee to work/school (ahem, I'm a graduate student) five days a week. I make a mean almond milk latte. So, I mainly come to Great Dane to meet up with folks on campus. I like the atmosphere more than any other place on campus, but keep coming back because the staff usually goes that extra mile. Today, I went there to meet a friend and they made him an Americano when he ordered a drip coffee--just so his coffee would be totally fresh. Second best thing about this place is the patio, which features a full-on fireplace year round. Sitting out there's guaranteed to turn my mood around on even the worst of days, because, truth is, sitting by a fireside makes anybody feel like a VIP. Third thing is, on the rare occasion I've eaten there, the food's been delicious and reasonably price. For me, a good meal on campus features real flatware; Great Dane has that, too, and it's even kind of fancy looking. Nicer than the stuff I have at home for sure. read more

Best espresso at UBC. Also has quite good sandwiches and treats. They have strange seating arrangements, but you can go into the accompanying cafe through the courtyard for more seating. Nice outdoor seating with fireplace as well! read more

Enjoyed sitting in the sun on their patio, but the coffee - for a second time - was somewhere between sour and flavourless. It's actually the worst coffee I have had in a long time, if not ever. A little piece of biscotti was over $3! For a small cappuccino and biscotti I paid $6.25. The coffee was filled to the rim and lukewarm. The table outside collapsed at the smallest touch and the coffee spilled in part. Underwhelmed to say the least. On a good note, I had a very yummy squash-nut soup there last week. read more

I've been to this coffee shop twice while visiting friends near UBC. It is one of the decent places to get coffee and have a hipster feel. There were a lot of people working on their homework, however, it was a really nice day, therefore, we took ours to go for a walk. Modest selection of sweets. Fantastic food and coffee. The cinnamon buns are really amazing, as are the muffins. The service is magnificent: quick, accurate, and genial. The coffee blends that they carry for drip are delicious, but I often find myself craving an almond milk latte from this delightful café in the mornings. Fast paced coffee shop with super friendly staff. My drip coffee was delicious! Chatted at the counter about all the great coffee in San Francisco. This stuff was right up there with the best stuff in SF! The sweet lady at the counter even told me not to worry when I was a bit short on cash to pay. Was going to take out the cc, but she said "don't worry honey, enjoy". Skip Starbucks. Highly recommend swinging by Great Dane. read more

Love it!! Absolutely love it! The staff are super pleasant, the sandwiches are to die for, and the coffee is delicious. I dine here nearly every other day. My favourite sandwich of theirs would have to be a veggie breakfast one, but honestly, you can't go wrong with any other. If you stay to eat, they even give you a side of balsamic vinegar to dip your sammy in. The two things I would change about them are their prices (but really, you get what you pay for) and their sometimes intermittent internet. read more

I love GD! Super cute spot, with arguably the best latte on campus, to-die-for baked goods. Good range of available products for dietary restrictions as well. I love their turmeric lattes and london fogs for the days you aren't feeling like coffee! I used to really enjoy sandwiches from here, but when I last had a grilled cheese, it wasn't melted all the way through, had too much cheese and just wasn't the melty crispy sandwich I expected (and have had before here!). Today's breakfast sandwich had way too much mayo, the bread was soggy, and the egg was cold in the middle. so sad because I really love this business and used to always look forward to food from here! A small adjustment to your recipe / process would make a big difference. read more

This is my new favourite spot on campus to grab a morning cappuccino, indulge in a warm cinnamon bun, or try out a hot drink recommended by their friendly staff. Drink version 2.0 kicked off in late February 2012 with the addition of a new & improved top of the line espresso machine. The prices are decent and I think they have something for everyone! It's a great place for lunch, studying, or a quick bite to go. AND it's cozy, family owned and operated, and has great hours. Not sure what else I could ask for! read more

BARISTA APPROVED! Tried this place for the first time. After two failed cafes came before it, my expectations weren't very high. Was I ever wrong! As a barista myself I was very impressed to see the Synesso machine I myself prefer. My latte had perfect microfoam, and great tasting espresso not to mention latte art that put my own to shame! Will go far out of my way often for one of these high quality lattes and looking forward to trying the desserts and food items! read more

This place is a busy little gem on the UBC campus. I just transferred in this semester and I try to get to Great Dane as often as I can for a coffee to bring to class. I've never had a bad cup from them, the acidity and sweetness is always on par in the espresso drinks. Their staff is friendly and the sweet treats and sandwiches are delicious. Only had soup once but it was lovely too. The food and coffee quality are high enough to keep this place hopping, so it's rare to find an unoccupied cosy corner to curl up in. They do have an extensive patio with heat lamps but it's still a little chilly for my taste. I really can't say enough good things, just don't go if you're looking for somewhere to sit and study, get in and out quickly, or even a guaranteed spot to sit. read more

This is my preferred spot to grab a coffee on campus (but keep in mind that I also stick to regular drip coffee over the espresso drinks). In comparison to the other offerings on campus this is a shinning star! In addition to their coffee their lunch options and baked goods are also great. I haven't ordered any of them but it does look like they try to have a gluten free or vegan option everyday. A downside is the lack of season when the weather is looking soggy. There is a lot of patio setting but that I difficult to utilized throughout most of the school year. There is also a lack of electrical outlets but I'm sure that was consciously done to complement the limited seating and make sure the cafe isn't full of students nursing a drink all day. read more

Wanted to love this place because it's convenient and looks nice. Two sub par experiences. First time, they forgot grilled cheese order and took maybe 25 minutes altogether. The sandwich was a bit bland and poor choice of very tough/extra-chewy bread. Second time, server was aggressively rude or maybe just really ready to quit. This is my favourite coffee place in Vancouver. Lovely staff, absolutely delicious coffee (try their flat white - insanely good) and baked goods. It is on the pricey side, but as the previous reviewer noted, you get what you pay for at this place. This is not one of those pretentious artisan coffee bars where you pay $6 for a thimble of mediocre coffee. For example, a 12oz latte at Great Dane costs $4, but it's 200x more delicious than a Starbucks latte. Plus their baristas make beautiful latte art. It's my once a week treat (twice a week if it's a particularly tough one). It's probably a good thing that the only location is at UBC or would I go there way too often. read more

I have been to Drink several times in the past month. The coffee has been delicious, salads have been fresh, tasty and interesting (love the roasted butternut and quinoa), and the turkey and Brie with cranberry sandwich was yum. I have told all my friends about it. Secret no more. read more

This is by far the best coffee on campus and I'd go so far as to say it's one of the best coffees in town. And furthermore, the food is TASTY. Their sandwiches are not your run-of-the-mill variety - inventive, fresh and yummy. They have a great breakfast menu too (big fan of the granola with rhubarb compote!). But the best part.... they are the only coffee shop in Vancouver that I know of, to make a flat white - the unbeatable Australian version of a latte (but smoother and creamier). Very friendly staff and great atmosphere.... students, faculty and neighbourhood residents are all discovering this little gem tucked away on the north side of campus (very close to the new law building). Best baked goods on campus - hands down. They have an in-house baker who makes new treats every day right there! Really, really good coffee from local (or Vancouver Island) roasters. Everything is really fresh: I would highly recommend. Sandwiches are a little light, but also delicious. read more

Ugh, my heart yearns for this place and its delicious Bow & Arrows coffee and comforting, homemade pastries, and the cozy, warm and bright natural-light filled space, and Cornelius the Squirrel (honestly, only when he's not trying to eat my bread pudding when I sit on the patio though). The woman who owns this place may struggle to remember my name (and more effort would be appreciated) but at least she gives me friendly nods of acknolwedgement when I AM there. There is always fresh baking coming out from the kitchen, along with sandwiches and soups - everything is made in-house! It's really the modesty and un-pretentiousness coupled with food quality that makes me overlook the significant lack of power plugs/sockets (I mean, you Are catering to students and profs after all!) and shortage of comfortable seating (if you sit by the back door = *shivers heavily from the chill*, if you sit facing the windows at the front of house = *personal heat wave in the summer*). In the back, there is also a beautiful patio that's secluded so you'll get privacy and there's something about a fireplace that makes you want to kick back and relax even more. The place seems to be getting increasingly popular since the time I discovered it last year so it makes sense that they're planning to expand their quarters into the building being constructed behind it (or so I've heard).
