I've personally done a half dozen tile projects in the past 2 years. I usually figure out precisely what I want, and then try to buy on Craigslist or online. My first Art Tile experience was a good one. I spent a lot however (never mind the beautiful tile), so I just assumed they were on the expensive side and never bothered writing a review. A few projects later, I was working on my kitchen back splash and visited 4 or 5 higher end tile shops looking for the perfect tile. I ended back at Art Tile. After all this shopping, I realized that they are actually very reasonably priced for the quality, besides having a nice selection. They also never charged me for the samples which many of the other tile shops did. I worked with Gary and Kirk and both were very helpful and knowledgeable. They even rushed a few items for me. If you are doing / attempting a "work of art", this place is definitely worth a visit. read more

I have been designing for 16 years here in the east Bay, and parts beyond. I know all of the tile shops in the area, and have watched the ups and downs of the different stores, as well as those of Art Tile. I always loved that they were an Oakland local business, but it was never my "go to" shop. It was small and cramped. Good people, but not an easy experience for myself or clients I would send there. That all changed, when Patrick took over the business, not long ago. The store has blossomed! The footprint is open and comfortable! The displays are wonderful, the selection is fantastic, and Gary and Marta are very helpful people, should you need their ideas. From the day we started looking at tile, everyone in this store was helpful. And when it was time to make final selections, Eve helped us with kitchen, big bathroom and small bathroom. I cannot say enough in appreciation of Art Tile. We were able to make an appointment with a designer fairly quickly. The appointment was great, Andrea was wonderful, she heard what we were looking for and helped us make a selection, going with the flow and adapting with the numerous times we changed our mind about the colors/scheme/theme/style. She was knowledgeable about the different types of tiles and the advantages of each of them. Andrea was amazingly patient, didn't rush us even when our hour was up and stayed laser focused on our needs, even when we got distracted by tile that wouldn't work for our project. Andrea quickly drew up a little design diagram to demonstrate the best way to use the tile that we chose for our space. I'd definitely recommend Art Tile to anyone who is looking to update their home. I came in looking for a very specific style and they were entirely accommodating. In areas where they didn't believe they could be competitive, they said so frankly and I appreciate their honesty. They remain the only supplier that I would deal with locally for this kind of material. It helps that they are almost one of a kind locally, of course. The last time I was there, a whole gang of idiots came in demanding that sales people serve them rather than the people who were there first. After some back and forth, the whole group announced themselves to be "Yelp Elites," and therefore deserving of special treatment. They seemed somewhat drunk, and very disorderly. I told them as politely as I knew how that I was calling the police, and that they better leave. They did so, but not before they had humiliated themselves completely in front of some of the display bathroom fixtures. I have bought tiles here and it is one of the most expensive tiles stores. You have to know what you want or like before going into the store. I felt the sales folks were not there to help design. I was lucky to work with Patrick who brought out different tiles and laid them out to see if the tiles coordinated with each other. Otherwise the other staff members will not figure this out for you. They have an honor system to lend you sample tiles to take home and for you to return. I have bought tiles here 15 years ago and will continue to. The warehouse to pick up tiles and grout is not to far from the store. I will continue to support my local businesses. read more

My dad and I were remodeling a kitchen and putting in a granite tile countertop. We bought all the slabs of granite at home depot but they didnt have the right color of grout or calk in any of the three stores nearby (emeryville, san leandro and the one off high st). We go to the special order desk at Home Depot and they tell us that the grout will take 2 weeks and that the calk doesnt come in the color we want at all. Since the apartment we were working on is right up the street, we walked down one afternoon. We talked to the guy here and he was able to order BOTH the grout an the calk in the color we wanted and it all got there the next day. So SCREW HOME DEPOT. This place is awesome. read more

I like spending my money locally, when possible, so I came to Art Tile as I'm remodeling a bath, foyer, and kitchen. The afternoon I walked in neither employee looked up to greet me, after a long pause I said 'hi' and there was some minimal acknowledgment that a customer had arrived. I spent about 15 minutes checking out some of their choices in the next room (I should say limited choices); still, no help and I'm the only person in the tiny showroom. On my way out I made a last, now feeble attempt to make eye contact to no avail. Maybe because I'm disabled I was invisible or maybe their customer service simply sucks... Zero star for Art Tile; and I found the same product up the pike for a lot less and with some customer service. read more

My 1936 Mediterranean tiled bathroom needed a complete shower replacement, but I didn't want to re-do rest of the room (all tiled up to the ceiling, some parts ceiling, too, even the WC is tiled!). As mentioned by other Yelpers, I came in with no sample, just a year and description. Kirk immediately pulled out the B&W sample card, and there were the modern equivalents of my '30s colors. I went home with a couple sample tiles and looked up the B&W web site, where I discovered pieces not in the Art Tile samples, but which were perfect additions to my design. Kevin (who wrote up my order after 3 visits to look at and discuss stuff) was amused by my coming in with printed catalog pages of items they didn't know B&W carried (those pages are now in the Art Tile B&W book), patient with my naive questions, and even came around on my cockamamie idea about using glass tiles for my niche shelves (worked great, I must say). I discovered that nobody re-does showers between Thanksgiving and New Years, which was good because I could wander in to the store any afternoon and get friendly attention, but not so good because the tile manufacturers' turnaround time is slower due to Xmas vacation. And because my design was evolving, my tile contractor and I underestimated some tile needs, which involved further waiting for small lots. But the guys were good about small add-on orders, even by phone. The big determinate of delivery time is on the manufacturing end, and the guys were good about explaining this. Apart from matches for vintage tiles, Art Tile has a very large selection of old and new styles, but the showroom is small, and it's easy to overlook some of the selection. So ask if you don't see something, it's probably hiding. There's more than enough on display to spark ideas for projects and made me re-think my future plans for the kitchen. This is a list price sort of place, so if you are looking for discounts, you'll be disappointed. If you are not a big contractor, go after lunch, when the place has no other customers (maybe not so true outside the holiday season) and you can ask questions. These guys do not jump up from the backroom to fawn on you, so I can see how some people might find the service lacking, but they responded cheerfully and helpfully to anything I asked. Art Tile has a very large selection of unusual tile, and also has a few sources for some tiles that match older standard tiles used in a lot of the A&C style houses common in the Bay Area. Most of these are special order. Also go around to the bathroom, take your shoes off and check out the warm floor. Very nice! I have two problems with them. The prices seem exceptionally high. Even on standard tile setting supplies like thinset everything seems to be at LEAST list price. And the fact that invoices are all hand written in this day and age gives me the creeps. One time I ordered something special order and the guy writing up the order asked the other guy how much to charge for shipping. The other guy rattled off a ridiculously high amount off the top of his head. That kind of stuff bugs the hell out of me. I've dealt with three people there. Two of them are extremely nice and very helpful. But the other guy just doesn't want to be there at all and he certainly doesn't want to help... or say anything.... or move... or smile... VERY grouchy. You'll know him when you see him. So in closing.... there are other tile shops out there and I would recommend checking out those first. But I would also check out Art Tile as well because you will see things here that nobody else has. And if you get the bad guy, just look around some more until one of the others are free. read more

I love this place. Not only is it close to where I live it has a huge selection. Gary, Marta and Patrick are a perfect team. They are in the process of remodeling the showroom on two floors. I work for a construction company and take me clients shopping for all the finishes. I am there sometimes twice a week. I used to go to three different tile stores to find what I need. Not anymore. Smaller tile selection than I'd hoped for, but very nice/helpful guys working there, so I'm reluctant to knock this place. Didn't have what I needed (it's tough finding a large tile inventory that's accessible to public transit, I tell you), but they were so pleasant and gave me some helpful answers to my questions about prices/materials, etc., that I didn't feel the time was wasted, even though I didn't find what I needed for my bathroom floor. (I did get some new ideas for the bathtub surround, so the trip there was not totally in vain.) Bonus points (for non-car-owners like myself) for being easy walking distance from MacArthur BART and being just a few blocks from Mama's Royal Cafe. I rewarded myself for my tile errand by making a stop at Mama's afterward and splurging on crab cakes hollandaise.. but I digress! If you're in the area, stop in to Art Tile, but if you're looking for a specific match or are far away, I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. Still, the guys were so darned nice, and the place is so close to Temescal and some decent restaurants, you might want to combine a stop here with lunch somewhere nearby (Bakesale Betty's or Mama's or somewhere else)... Meanwhile, the tile hunt continues! Where o where is the peachy-colored terra-cotta replacement floor tile that I seek? Where, where, where??? (sniffle) read more

Pros: Good selection, friendly people, functioning order processing. Cons: I was in a hurry for pebble tile for shower. Got charged 30% more (per tile) than I was quoted there two weeks prior. Aside from that there was $42 shipping charge (not mentioned before). 3 day after the tile was picked and project finished I had 3 tiles (out of 15) left. I thought at $22 a tile I might as well return them with whatever restocking fee they had. Called them, they promised to call back and find out. No call back within 3 hours. Went there with those 3 tiles. Turns out those were special order (not mentioned) and not refundable / returnable (at any restocking fee). Bad for environment, bad for return business (with me at least). So, several recommendations: 1. Keep track of their quotes (vs orders), hidden fees, ask about return policies. 2. If you need pebbles, just get those online (at 65-70% less than these guys would sell you identical ones). Better selection, literally third of the cost. read more

I had a great experience here with Patrick at Art Tile. I was doing a kitchen and bath remodel and needed backsplash tile for both areas. They have an amazing selection in the store and the prices were very reasonable, especially for the great quality of the tile. Ordering all the tile went smoothly and I was especially pleased when Patrick called me earlier than expected to let me know my McIntyre tile was in and ready to be picked up. My wife and I have bought tile here three times for projects in our home in Montclair. Hadn't been there for a few years and recently went back for a fourth time. I learned that the store had changed hands. But from what I can see, it's a nice improvement. We loved the demo areas downstairs, and the selection is as solid as ever. As soon as our contractor gets his act together (not holding my breath) we're going to be buying there once again. This time to redo a bathroom.
