Indian fusion leaves some room for improvement (3.5/5 stars) Food eaten: Butter chicken mac and cheese, champagne (brunch) Experience I came here with a big group (~8) for brunch on a Saturday morning. The inside is bright and good for conversation, but something about the décor seems a bit sterile and overly minimalistic. We opted with standard brunch fare, and I chose the bottomless champagne/mimosa option alongside my entrée. I would consider its reasonably priced ($35) in comparison to other bottomless brunch options, especially in the Chelsea/West Village area. I am a big fan of Indian fusion and brunch, so I was excited to see aRoqa offered a bottomless brunch option (though I won't claim that champagne, by any means, is a complimentary pairing with mac & cheese). The servers were also prompt and attentive to our table. Food I had the butter chicken mac and cheese - it was good, but not great. I think my qualms with the dish are not necessarily in its execution, but rather with the idea of the dish itself. I'm all for fusion, but this combination felt overly forced (i.e. let's take two popular, rich/fattening dishes from two separate cuisines and combine them to create the ideal brunch plate). Good in theory, bad in practice. Being of Indian heritage, I found myself craving some more authentic Indian flavors and spice in my meal. I asked the servers to make my dish extra spicy, but was a bit disappointed with the resulting spicy level. The sauce was rich but not necessarily flavorful. Three others in our group had the dish and seemed content with the spice level, though. The portion size is pretty perfect - not too little, not too much. Since I live reasonably close to the area, I'll likely come here for dinner at some point and try some of the Indian fusion tapas. I think my so-so experience here is largely the product of only having one entrée during brunch. I'll give the spot 4 stars for the concept and reasonably priced bottomless brunch. read more

I had a reservation 2 weeks ago for here and came with lot of expectations seeing so many great reviews and pictures of food. I was with my husband and as we entered there was no one to ask for. We waited for 5-10 mins and then I went inside and asked someone on the counter. He asked to choose whichever empty table I like. After getting a table, we waited again for another 10 mins and then I called the waiter to give us the menus. I also noticed that this happened with allother people coming in. They all have to wait to get a table even though the restaurant is empty. As many people have suggested so my order was Habanero Tikka, Bhatti Murgh ki Champ and Tandoori Chicken Dosa. Another thing I noticed on the table next to us, there was a party of 4 and each person was served with food at different time. We got Dosa first and then after 10 mins of eating that we got our Habanero tikka and after 5 mins we got the truck of Chicken Champ. Tandoori Chicken Dosa - 3/5 It is a decontructed dosa with sides of tandoori chicken, spicy potatos, coconut chutney, spicy chutney and sambhar. Everything was delicious, sambhar was thick and aloo masala was nicely spiced. Chicken was fine and soft. I felt the dosa was very oily but tasted good with everthing. Also I expected a tandoori chicken filled dosa(like regular south Indian dosa but tandoori chicken filling instead of potatos) seeing on the menu. Habanero Tikka - 4/5 It is 3 piece chicken with aioli sauce capsules. Looks amazing and tasted great. Bhatti Murgh ki Champ - 4/5 It came on a toy truck and the waiter presented to us in a fancy way. Really really liked this place. The ambiance is sleek, with black walls and has a minimalist feel to it. We came here for dinner on a Friday night. For drinks, both me and my friend got the southern soujourn - which has mezcal, celery juice, bbq syrup - spicy and strong. Very nice actually. To eat, we ordered a bunch of appetizers - sunchokes chaat (7/10 - was nice), kurkuri bhel (8/10 - was one of the favorites out of everything that we ate), sabudana tiki (again delicious and highly recommend it), the corn puddu (it was nice but a little too greasy for my liking). Made a reservation for 7 pm but got there at 6 for drinks. The Third Eye cocktail is very tasty and they have a few good options. We got the corn paddu and lasuni gobi which were both very good but the portions are very small. For our entrees we got the Goan shrimp curry and chicken tikka masala with naan. We wanted to visit an Indian fine dine restaurant which allows kids as well. We are Indians so impressing us with Indian food is difficult. We found the appetizers so tasty that we thought of just ordering different tasting plates for a meal. We had sunchoke chaat, kurkuri bhel, eggplant tacos as appetizers. All the plates were so beautiful and tasted so good that we forgot to take photos before decimating it. The appetizers were of good proportion for 2 adults and a kid. Next we ordered amritsari and onion kulcha with palak paneer and okra masala. Both the dishes surpassed our expectations and we took some leftovers. We ended the meal with coconut kheer and it felt like we were eating a delicious creamy icecream. Our server was Sebastian who was polite, quick and efficient. This was a fun and interesting experience for us! I enjoyed their Indian tapas/fusion vibe and cute cocktails. Ambiance/Decor: This place went from being very empty when we arrived at 7 pm to pretty full around 9 pm when we were about to leave. It went from no music playing to 90s hip-hop blasting so loud you had to talk over it. I was not a fan of that, but I understand that instrumental Indian music which typically plays makes the restaurant sound boring and less trendy. Cute industrial style seating with black and gold colors. Service: No trouble at all with the service. I really appreciated that they changed our plates and cutlery after we transitioned from apps to dinner part of our meal. Price: We paid about 65 a person (with tip) for apps, dinner, and dessert including one drink each. It's definitely not cheap but it's also not wallet breaking. I really thought for all the food the price made sense. Portions for the entrees are a little on the smaller side, but if I wanted more I could have gone to an Indian buffet. Food: Onto the good stuff. Definitely get the Bhatti Murgh ki Champ if you want your snapchat/instagram story to be lit AF. I had so many people asking me where I was after posting this app. It was to its credit also delicious (so tender and well-seasoned). Paratwala Paneer is great for the vegetarians, and was also yummy/memorable. The butter chicken (Khade Tamatur ka Murgh) was well-flavored, but the Achari Bangain was bland and a miss on my end. The Yakhni Palao was just ok, nothing too memorable for me - but I loved all the stuffed kulchas! To be honest, I could not really taste the meat in the lamb/chicken ones - by eating with the shared plates it was hard to decipher, but really enjoyed eating them overall. Dessert was delicious! I brought my wife here this evening for a Valentine's Day dinner. Made reservations days ahead of time and looked forward to having a delicious dinner. Honestly, nearly everything about this place was pretty wonderful. Our server was thoughtful and attentive. She made great recommendations from the menu. The food was delicious. We ordered three rounds of drinks. The evening was pricey (about $250 in total) but we felt it was totally worth it. Until... We had been there about an hour and fifteen minutes and had paid the bill quickly after eating, leaving a 25% tip for our server. We only had to still finish our drinks. About a third of a glass for each of us. So we were surprised when just a few minutes after paying, one of the hostesses walked up to our table, and within earshot of other people, pushed us to finish our drinks since there is "another reservation for your table scheduled to arrive in 10 minutes." We did not know how to respond at that moment. There were plenty of empty tables (seriously, so many empty tables) and there were several customers still at their tables who had arrived at a similar time as we did. The only difference is that we had finished eating before they had. So take from this review what you will. We had a great time at aRoqa this evening until that hostess unnecessarily walked up to our table and said what she said. Left a bitter taste. Everyone was great, except for her. read more

Everything we ordered was full of flavor and the perfect portion. aRoqa has outdoor seating with tables divided with plexi dividers. We started with the Bhel, Paneer app (forgot the name) and chicken. I had both the Bhel and paneer it was perfect. The Bhel had the perfect amount of crunch and flavor. The paneer was plated in two rounds with cute little squeeze tubes filled with chutney. Once again I would order both of these. For our main we ordered the shrimp curry - this was tasty but a bit underwhelming with only 4 prawns. Vegetable Biryani was full of flavor and I would order this again. This place is on the pricier side but extremely tasty. I guess prices were generally what you expect in Chelsea. Small plates were $15 and generally came with 2 pieces. I came here in a group so we had to order multiple portions of everything so that everyone could get one piece which adds up quickly. We tried the corn fritters, chicken kebab, paneer, bhel puri, and a couple others. Loved the displays. Some of the food came out on a mini bicycle which was super cute. The chicken and paneer came with a habanero chutney in a syringe. The chicken and paneer were both amazing. We were so full from appetizers so we only got a couple entrees to share. I'm so glad this restaurant is still operating during Covid! They have barriers between each table to ensure safety. We started off with the lasuni gobi. The presentation was so cute! It came out in a small red truck. We also got the mushrooms, which is what they're known for (and rightfully so). The mushrooms were covered with a crispy flaky layer and they literally melt in your mouth! This dish was a little more "western" but I loved it. My main entree was the okra, which was packed with flavor too, but next time I want to try something else! We ended the meal with their pistachio gelato. Obviously "authenticity" isn't the only goal of an Indian fusion place and I can't fault them for riffing on standard fare, but this tasted a lot like getting Indian food at any small town in America. I had a reservation at 8pm and they close at 10 pm but from 9 pm onwards they behave like their kitchen is about to close and they make you rush. In an effort to support local businesses on this first Corona Saturday night, we put in an order to go and picked it up. It was a sad scene when we arrived a 9 p.m., just two or three tables filled when usually this place is always bustling. Still, the bartender and the server who took our order were very friendly and our order was filled correctly and the right temperature. I loved: the garlic naan! The lamb biryani with big chunks of tender lamb and a delicious white sauce; The tempura cauliflower with a delicious sprinkling of nigella seeds; The Goan shrimp curry, with a luscious coconut-y sauce; And the okra (at least my husband couldn't stop eating it - I see no reason to eat okra ever). Less so: the chicken tikka masala was rich and good, but had a flavor that was decidedly NOT reminiscent of every other chicken tikka masala I have tried. The palak paneer, which I hoped would satisfy in the same way my typical saag paneer does, decidedly did not - the spinach puree was good, the croquettes on top were tasty, but the whole point of saag paneer is those squeaky soft paneer cubes playing hide and seek amongst the spinach. Needless to say, this made me sad. But not sad enough that we won't order again from A Roqa when the craving for Indian strikes. 5 stars for presentation, 3 stars for the food. It seems that Aroqa is still growing into itself. The menu is inventive - love the tapas take on Indian food. The space has an intimate feel - make sure to sit in the front half as the space towards the back is awkward and choppy. As for the food, the dishes varied widely. The kurkuri bhel was my favorite - a modern, tangy and crunchy take on a classic snack. The paneer kulcha was also good - although you it's hard to screw up buttery bread. The other 3 dishes were mediocre - including the mushroom kataifi which the server said was their most popular dish. Where Aroqa really excels is in the presentation - each dish was plated so beautifully it was a treat to see them. Some come on trucks, others on bikes and one dish even had micropipettes full of sauce (O-Chem anybody?). Aroqa definitely has room to grow - I would give it another try in a few months after they settle in. I hope they do because there is some real creativity there! read more

So these are a few that you should most definitely try: 1. Ghost chili chicken kebab: if spicy is your way, you'll be a die hard fan once you've tried this 2. I had a small celebration get together. The front of the restaurant was reserved for us. The owner, Monica, and I discussed a pre-fixe menu ahead of time. It was different... not the typical Indian menu. Aroqa's specialty is small tapas styles plates. And that's what the focus was. We had 8-9 different tapas style appetizers. Each appetizer was delectable and presented beautifully. After the apps, we had assorted breads and biryani. We ended with desserts. Overall, everyone really enjoyed the entire meal but the highlights were definitely the appetizers. Our main server was Sebastian. He was very attentive and very polite .. made sure that we had everything we needed. Service was great!
