I wanted to like this place, really... I DID. But man, I don't get all of the glowing reviews. First, I expected them to have vegan BBQ based on all the press/reviews re: Arlo's. They don't have that, just burgers/tacos. So if I'm judging this based on best vegan/vegetarian burgers I've ever had, it's a 6/10. Vegan mac tastes like Diaya. Yuck. Chemicals. You can make mac with cashew cheese and it's brilliant. Burger is dry, but large. Bun is good. Toppings are good, but something major is missing. Not sure what it is... TBH, the meat that was supposed to be made of their own seitan tasted like it had some Impossible burger in it. I guess, the bottomline is that none of it really tasted like they made it all there or that it was all that fresh. Also, menu states that you can add a side to an entree for $2 instead of $3, but when I asked about this was told that's only if it's on burger. Whut?! Anyway, I get the feeling there was more soul in this at some point and people just still love it regardless. I wasn't too impressed, especially for the price. I stayed at a nearby hotel and the view outside my window was Arlo's. My final night staying there, I decided to grab dinner there for a quick meal. It's located within Cheer Up Charlie's but you can just let them know you're there just for the food truck. I will say, the bar was poppin' that night, maybe I should of stayed for the party ;) Anyways, I was pleasantly surprised by the food. The BBQ burger and fries were really good. Arlo's has delicious, fresh, greasy vegan fast food served in a place with great ambiance and convenience. Their prices are incredible and the food is filling and tasty. It is located next to a bar with live music and has picnic tables set up to eat at. Arlos provides accessible vegan junk food to downtown Austin. It is open late so it is a great option for late night vegan cravings. The food is so well made and flavourful that I can't imagine a meat eater having any complaints about the food. Arlos has a selection of burgers, seitan sandwiches, tacos, fries , tots, and specials to choose from. The tater tots are super crispy and only 2 dollars when added on to a burger. This is the ideal place to go when you want an affordable greasy bacon cheddar cheeseburger that is completely vegan late at night. read more

Cute little vegan food truck spot for burgers and fries! I got the bacon cheeseburger and mac n cheese. The bacon was very crispy and salty and amazing! It comes with pickles and mustard which I probably should've noticed on the menu before ordering but I just picked out the pickles. Also, they had SO MANY PICKLES which is worth it if you like them lol. The mac n cheese was interesting. The noodles thick and the "cheese" was spiced and reminded me of Indian curry. There was no thick or creamy sauce so it wasn't my favorite but it was still nice to try. My friend got the tots as her side and they were SOOO crispy! Overall, not bad for a non-vegan's tastebuds! YES!!! Just like the rating says...this is as good as it gets!!!! We got this recommendation and had to stop by and visit! Arlo's sits in a lot with a couple of other trucks, with a convenient ATM right on the sidewalk! There is very limited parking in the lot itself, but plenty of street parking all around, with a lot nearby as well. OK, now to the good stuff! They promptly opened at noon, right on time. After a hard time deciding what to get, I selected their bacon cheeseburger and a side of mac and cheese. My wife got the same burger, but with tots on the side instead. The burger was one of the best. The patty was thick and juicy, very flavorful! Their homemade bacon on top was thick cut with a nice hickory smoked accent...it made the burger so much better (if that was possible). All of the small details..the veggie toppings, the sauces, the grilled bun...all come together gloriously!!!! The mac and cheese on the side was magnificent as well! The flavor of the cheese sauce was on point, but even better was the crispy edges that I got in my order (I loooove crispy edges). Arlo's, after one visit, is probably one of my favorite spots down in Austin. I know it sounds like a knee-jerk reaction, but trust me, if you tasted my meal you would agree with me 100%! read more

The folks taking the orders were very unorganized. We titnessed the guy making an order of tots, and after he made too many, he threw away the rest instead of giving them to the customer or saving them for the next order. Seemed quite wasteful. Finally, and this may seem silly, but this place does not advertise itself as being vegan other than its "clever" spelling of cheeze, chick'n, etc. If you're not paying attention, you might not know what you're getting into. We came in for a late dinner - it's a food truck trailer in a little area beside a bar, where we entered and had to show ID (21+) not sure if it's the same for all hours of the day? We heard lots of good things about the Bac'n Cheeze Burger and so that's what we got! And yes, yum! It was good! The only thing is the Bac'n didn't have all that much "bacon" flavor or anything. Plenty of seating outside. This place was at the top of our vegan food list for this city after all the talk and I'd recommend it for any Austin vegan food seekers! Went on a vegan food tour in Austin and Arlo's was our priority stop. The hype is defiantly real and backed up with their double bacon cheese burger. Was the wife and I first visit to a place with a vegan burger...I just hope the bar wasn't set up everywhere else. Came on a Friday with no wait after the lunch hour, we both spilt their bacon cheese burger, soy based vegan patty made with seitan substituted with for bacon, cheese, tomatoes, onions, pickles, mustard and ketchup. Vegan or not, this is one of the juiciest burgers you'll have and hits the spot. The bacon isn't what you exactly expect to be but as a substitute it fits and tastes amazing, comes in thick strips on the burger. They don't skimp on the quality of tots, crispy light and seasoned from the best tots I've had. Well worth the $14, only con for us is the place is an hour away from where we live but a slam dunk place to eat when we're in Austin. read more

The burger was delicious and didn't taste like your run-of-the-mill vegan "burger." The tots were crispy and hot too! If you're craving really good vegan junk food, this is your spot. A word of advice: I've heard the wait can get super long on evenings and weekends, so save yourself the trouble and come during the day. Unfortunately, you will probably have a hard time convincing your meat-eating friends to ever let you take them to another vegan restaurant. The Mac and Cheeze was particularly bad. Good God, who knew vegan food trucks could produce such marvels? I'm serious! At least 3 different vegans in Austin recommended me this place until one day I decided it was time. My husband and I headed to Arlo's, the purported "best vegan place in town", and we had their mac n' cheese and burger. Their mac n' cheese blew my mind! How could a melange containing no dairy be so delicious?! It remains a mystery to me to this day! Their burger was also very yummy, and their patty had just the right texture, almost making me forget for a moment that it wasn't real meat (since I've been a vegetarian for 10 years now, it shouldn't be too hard to fool me, BUT STILL!) A few weeks later we came back to try their tacos. They're amazing too. Arlo's, is there something you can't do?! Right, bathrooms. The one negative side of Arlo's is the horrid portable toilet that stands next to their truck. In my world, portable toilets are a hellish invention that serve to punish folks who haven't been blessed with a bladder big enough to hold it until they can find a decent bathroom. Thank god mother nature gave me a bladder of steel, but I admit being in the vicinity of such prospect was still a painful sight and consideration. I held it. Oh I held it strong. Arlo's is nicely located on Red River St, sharing Cheer Up Charlie's parking lot space. If you visit at night, you may just be lucky enough to grab one of their awesome cocktails and pair it with Arlo's vegan delicacies. Note that if you visit on a rainy day, Arlo's tables are equipped with umbrellas that will protect you from most of the rain. Not bad! I definitely recommend Arlo's for delicious vegan street food. I'd never thought in all my years I would actually like a total vegan burger. Everything is vegan, from the patty to the cheese and of course the bun and veggies. From the first bite I was impressed as it had that grilled meat(less) taste that complimented by gooey cheese, of which I have no idea what it is made of, and a toasted bun. Surprisingly the party didn't crunch or pop when I bit into it. The texture of the party was as close to actual meat as it could get. I opted for the double and it was too much for me. I am a meat eater. Like, if I could start a band with fellow meat eaters dressed up like their favorite cuts, I would and we would have a hit song, M.E.A.T (to the tune of Y.M.C.A of course) I'm passionate about pork, I'd bathe in brisket, I DREAM ABOUT DUCK, but Arlo's you rock. While no veggie burger could hold a candle to a freshly ground chuck, Arlo's comes pretty dang close. Like any good veggie substitute, toppings are key. They BBQ sauce is heaven sent, their pickles are pickley, and their veggies are crunchy-fresh. It's probably the closest experience you can have to eating a burger if you've never had one. The one weird thing about this location is that you have to go through the bar at night. Not a problem, per se, but I know Cheer Ups charges a cover sometimes. I'm not sure if they would charge you, though, if you were just tryin' get your burg on. read more

I've been vegetarian for eighteen years. Every once in a while I crave a messy, greasy burger. I have never EVER had a vegan burger as good as the one I ate tonight. I ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger and the tots. Our food was ready quickly. The service was nice. It was cool being able to get a beer at Cheer Up Charlie's (Arlo's is set up in their lot) to enjoy with our meals. Then sat us down, didn't bring us any water or anything.. came back in 10 min and said " you all are to drunk and you have to leave" when NOBODY has had a drink the whole night. So I had a couple of drinks and worked up an appetite at Cheer Up Charlie's. Arlo's was calling my name. The menu is small I recall and the one thing that stood out to me was the bacon cheeseburger. I ordered it and in no time at all my meal was ready. I tore into that burger like it was nobody's business. It was soooo good and juicy. I could tell it was different, but I thought maybe it was all the toppings and sauciness on it. It was a messy one but so f'in worth the stain on my shirt! It wasn't until my last bite that I realized all of Arlo's food is vegan. I really didn't notice while eating. Maybe I didn't notice because of my drinks I had or maybe it was because it was that freaking good or maybe because I was so hungry I scarfed it down.... anyway it was f'in amazin! Holy moly, kids - I'm probably one of the last people in a town this progressive to stumble upon a food truck serving a 100% vegan menu, but fortunately, I found my way. Thanks, Yelp. Thank you, Errol. And God bless Arlo's! Before you peg me as an overzealous Tim Tebow-type, I'll provide you with just enough backstory on why I'm so wowed. I was raised as a meat-loving child of Croatian immigrants who sometimes tended to spit-roasting lamb alongside my father to get out of Sunday mass ... in our backyard. And instead of fighting for either vanilla or chocolate icing on our birthday cakes, it was far more likely you'd find us siblings arguing over the 'best' pieces of the lamb. And so it went, until eventually I realized that as enjoyable as it was, eating the Balkan way isn't the healthiest. Fast forward to a challenging adventure in veganism six years ago that lasted exactly one month... I found grocery shopping to be tedious, cooking laborious and eating out? Yawn. And though presently, I am not of the vegan persuasion, I'm eating much more consciously and considerably reducing my intake of animal products. On day 13 of my 21-day plant-based recharge regimen, my pleasure-seeking side demanded an Arlo's Bac'n Cheeze Burger and I was thrilled to indulge it. Following a torturous ten-minute wait, I ran off with my 'burger' like a jackal with its antelope - unwilling to share and scheming to pounce on its messy, voluptuous feast. It looked like a cheeseburger, smelled like a cheeseburger and oddly enough... tasted as good as the real thing which had me thinking, 'there's no way this is vegan'. But it is. The house-made patty is covered with Arlo's signature seitan 'bacon', melted 'cheeze', lettuce, red onions, tomatoes, vegan mayo, mustard, ketchup and pickles all stacked on a soft, plump bun. $7.50 is a small price to pay for a filling sandwich that will likely change your views on vegan-style fast food!
