Arlos is arguably a decent burger, vegan or not. As a matter of full disclosure, we were there on a night when no one else was in line and of course, we flirted ruthlessly, so perhaps that helped. But I was expecting some Alpo flavored nonsense that all my veg friends took for real meat. And you know what? It was pretty darn good. If I were super drunk, it would have been better but that's pretty common with regards to all food. I didn't look really closely either which probably helped. The burrito was pretty darned good too -- spicy, the way I likez it. I feel all virtuous n stuff after eating this faux burger and I wonder if that doesn't add to the happy feeling about the consumption but bravo to Arlos for making something that even a meat eater can like, if not love. read more

Specifically sought this out on my business trip to ATX. Double bacon and cheese is literally one of the best vegan burgers I've eaten. The texture of the thick seitan bacon, smoky crunch on the outer layer of the patty. Melty creamy vegan cheese. I also ordered a side of mac n cheese that was also impressively creamy. It was in an area of town where there were lots of drunk college aged kids. Arlo's itself shares a space with a bar, so enter through the bar to access. I really don't know how to feel about this place. I've recently been trying vegetarian items and my friend and I wanted to try Arlo's because of the awesome reviews. So we get there and we need to show our ID. I want a bacon and cheeseburger and I need my ID... really? My friends younger brother is with us and my ID is in my car... that's pretty lame. So I wait outside the bar (you have to walk through it in order to get to the other two trailers... that makes no sense to me) with my friends younger brother while my friend orders some Arlo's for us. At this point I'm already a litte bummed... it only opens at 8 and you need your ID. stupid. I'm surprised the trailers have put up with this, honestly. So then I get the bacon cheeseburger and try it. It's weird... it's like a crappy burger, but nonetheless a burger. But the more I eat it the more I like it. The cheese actually tastes like cheese, which is weird to me. But the more I keep munching on it the more I DON'T like it. It's just so... fake? I know vegans are vegan for a variety of reasons, but if it's to be natural then I feel like this is really hypocritical... because this is anything but natural. If it's for a food allergy, then I get it. Or if it's for some sort of animal respect that makes sense too. But I've had some vegan meals (especially Casa del sol) that taste a billion times better than this. I guess it all depends on what you're looking for and the reasons behind you're choice of eating. I was really excited to try this place out because it's both a food truck and vegan! The bac'n cheeze burger was really delicious, but had pickles and mustard. Pickles and mustard usually disgust me, but they tasted delicious with this burger. I wasn't particularly fond of the mac n cheese, but I'm very picky with my mac n cheese. My brother, on the other hand, loved the mac n cheese. The person who rang me up was very kind and informative of where to find vegan places in my hometown, Houston. Arlo's is going in my outlier list: places that seem to treat me better or worse than they treat everyone else, based on average star rating. Yes, make no mistake, Arlo's offers some good food. That's not the problem. The problem is that the service was nothing short of awful on our last visit, in totally avoidable ways. So we show up about 12:45 on Sunday, looking to get our vegan eats on. We wait several minutes to order while the cook makes the orders ahead of ours while mixing in prep that should probably already have been done. Cook takes order. The missus wants chik'n tacos with tots. No tots, we are told, only fries. Bummer. I order the italian sausage, sweet potato fries, and a Topo Chico. No Topo Chico. Water? Nope. Arizona Sweet Tea (gag) only. He notices our increasing bewilderment that the food truck seems to have no food or drink available, and sheepishly notes that "We got hit hard last night. Still waiting on our delivery." At 1pm, when nearly everyone has already had lunch. This is a fine business strategy, to be sure. We sit and wait 20 minutes while cook prepares food for the four people ahead of us. I note that he delivers all of these orders in the most bizarre, piecemeal fashion I've recently witnessed: a lot of "Here's your sandwiches, and I'll have your fries in another few minutes" kind of stuff, as if timing fries to correspond with the rest of the order is something that barely trained fast food clerks don't have figured out by day two. Both of the orders ahead of us morph from for-here to to-go as an irritated reaction to the long wait. Clerk forgets to include drink on one of them, forcing customer to impatiently return for it. So of course, we get our fries ahead of our tacos and sandwich. They're unsalted and thus not very good. As we eat our food in the hot sun without drinks, an old Volvo arrives and someone unloads food and drink to the truck, far too late to do us or anyone else who'd already ordered any good. So, Arlo's, you could have had your cook pick things up on the way in and reimbursed him later. You could have asked your delivery dude to get out of bed before noon. You could have delayed opening your truck to account for the lack of essentials like cold drinks on an August day in Texas. Instead, you just pissed off everyone who came there. Now, you seem to be doing well critically and commercially, and so you don't need my money or my advice, but Yelp is kind enough to provide me a forum, anyway. I will use it to say that I'm never coming back for this shit. read more

So I dabble with veganism and vegetarianism and was looking for a good vegan burger. I happened to be downtown and saw this on Yelp so figured why not. I got the Bac'n Cheeze Burger and let me tell you, it still tasted like a burger. I did not regret my choice in getting this over going to some burger joint downtown. They have pretty awesome sweet potato fries too. It's right by Cheer Up Charlie's too so you can get some beer with your food and have a good time. This is one of my favorite places. My go to is their Bacon Cheesburger and sweet potato fries!! I'm usually not a fan of vegetarian/vegan mock ups of meat based foods. But I am lovin Arlos. Now to be fair it doesn't take like an actual Angus beef cheeseburger with bacon but it does taste good. It definitely makes you feel full. Some folks were complaining that they don't offer drinks which I think is because this particular Arlos is located with Cheer Up Charlie's which serves drinks. At least that is what I'm thinking. I live about 20 min away so I will typically call in my order so it is ready when I pick it up. The staff have always been nice and even make suggestions for what you should try. The food is made to order so they stop taking orders around 1:40ish some folks complain about that but I know lots of brick and mortar establishments who close their kitchen early but allow patrons to stay inside. read more

I'll admit I wasn't sure I was going to be sold on this burger by the photos but boy was I wrong! I was blown away - I was in Austin for a weekend and ate here 3xs! I wasn't a big fan of the frito burger but most likely because I'm not huge on a wet/saucy burger. The regular cheese burger was out of this world. I highly recommend getting the mac & cheese added. The cheese was gooey and sticky and for whatever reason I found it to be the perfect topper to the burger. It definitely didn't overload the burger- it was just right! I thought the bun was going to be hard/thick but it was charred, buttery and delicious! Don't skip out on the tacos either. The chipotle sauce was BOMB! Okay. Nothing to say that has not already been said. I have been vegetarian for 4 years and my husband has been vegan for 4 years and we have NEVER had a veggie burger like this. Of course we both ordered the Bacon Cheese burger. I ordered fries and he ordered tots. OMG. Perfection. Even the "cheese'' and I HATE vegan cheese. Also, I'm the kind of person who hates eating outside and also not a fan of mock meat or "burgers", but I loved this food so much I came back again and ordered the same meal and ate it outside again before leaving Austin for Houston. The first time I heard of this place was at the New York VegFest and the line was LONG. By the time it was my turn they were sadly sold out, but then I found out that Arlo's is actually located in Austin, TX! Can't believe I live in Austin and had to find out about this place all the way in New York. Anyways, this place is awesome whether you're vegan/vegetarian or a meat eater. Austin is the food truck capital of the United States of America. Even better there are several vegan options available. I decided to try Arlo's for their infamous burgers. I went to the downtown location which was in a food truck park area with seating available. We went on a Saturday afternoon and it was busy. The line went very quick and the wait wasn't long. I decided to order the cheeseburger with sweet potato fries (not included). The burger was amazing!! It was very filling and had flavor. Unfortunately they don't have any drink options beyond seltzer water. You have to go to another area for drinks. Fortunately I bought my water bottle to avoid that issue. I recommend this food truck for both omnivores and carnivores. It's definitely a must try spot in Austin. read more

Disclaimer: I am very much a meat eater. Still, I am impressed at how much I enjoyed the vegan Bacon Cheeseburger. You can't fake bacon, but still this was a good burger. That being said I find it really odd the menu is based around faking meat products. I often enjoy vegetarian dishes etc, but because I enjoy real meat, vegan imitation meat doesn't do it for me. Arlo's does good job making vegan alternatives of everyones favorite, bacon cheese burger at an affordable price. After my meal I just wanted to take a fat nap, but I have a feeling that it was the tatortots that did that too me. I think next time, I would rather eat a black bean burger as a substitute for a burger instead of eating something that is pretending to be something that it is not. To me, that just leads to my tastes buds being confused and left slightly disappointed because it wasn't a real burger. Hopefully Arlo's can introduce a nice vegan friendly black bean patty in the future! Visited Austin for a day and wanted to try the best vegan food as Austin is known for its great veg options and food trucks. Obviously Arlo's was perfect because it combines both. My friends and I tried all the different burgers on the menu and everyone was satisfied, my favorite burger was the BBQ burger. The patties were so nice and crispy and the onions and tomatoes did not taste overpowering which was perfect. Loved everything about the burger and the beautiful breeze in the outdoor seating area definitely added to a great eating experience. I don't even like burgers and I thought it was amazing.
