I took my vegan friend here on a whim while she was visiting Austin. Me, being a dedicated carnivore, had never really had vegan food before and I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the street tacos and fries, and the street tacos were so flavorful that I almost forgot about the lack of meat. The fries also had the perfect texture and the portion size was decent for the amount of money it cost. My friend ordered the frito pie and mac and cheeze and said that it was the best frito pie that she's had. The mac and cheeze did have a really strong tumeric taste to it and was a little greasy, so if that's not your cup of tea I would probably pass on it. (The food isn't really that pricey, we just ordered tons of it) When you're vegetarian (or vegan) most restaurants assume you're doing it to be healthy. We ended up at Arlos looking for happeas because happeas was apparently closed. Not disappointed though because Arlos was right next to them, open and we were hungry! The boys working at the food truck were very nice and friendly, also gave us some recommendations. We had the Frito chili burger which was yummy and filling. Also had the chicken sandwich which was pretty bland and also why I only gave them 4 stars. Our friend had the bacon cheeseburger and he loved it. There is seating near the food truck. Yum! Arlo's is a (permanently located?) food truck style fast food joint. There is at least one other truck around town as well. I had the bacon cheeseburger (vegan). It was a house made patty with housemade seitan bacon (the best bacon I've had vegan!). The toppings were plentiful: vegan cheese, mayo, ketchup, mustard, red onion, pickles I think? Anyway, I ordered as is and It. Was. Delicious. The bun was toasted and really made the burger next level. We were so impressed and wished we were hungrier as we only got one burger to split. Later that night I ended up ordering some cheeky drunk food through postmates from Arlo's. This time, their chipotle seitan chicken sandwich and chili Mac. The sandwich was dynamite!! The chili Mac was tasty but I had expected more cheese. The Mac is definitely a filling meal on its own and I feel that Arlo's is a great value for the dollar you're paying. read more

A couple of weeks ago, I was at the Vida Vegan Con Bazaar which was a vegan festival with food, vendors and speakers. One of the food trucks that was there was Arlo's. My friends and I had heard wonderful things about their Bac'N Cheeze Burger so we had to give it a try. The Bac'N Cheeze Burger had a house-made soy and gluten free patty with house made seitan bac'n, melted cheese, mayo, ketchup, mustard, pickles, tomatoes, onion and lettuce. To be fair the lady working was very nice, but it took 1 hour to get my food, they should definitely have more ppl working on a holiday or just closed. Newly vegan here. On the search for the best vegan food around! I can full-heartedly say that out of any tacos I've ever had (before being vegan even) these are the best ever! You wouldn't even believe they are vegan, and the sauce they use is to die for. This place is so hot, non vegans go here to enjoy it. It's in a pretty convenient part of Austin, right across from Stubbs. You can also go grab a beer from the place next to it and eat outside when the weather is nice. Another great thing was this place was cheap considering it's Austin! You get two tacos per meal, for a little more than $6. We ate for less than $20 (that included our beer!) Does anybody know when this location is actually opened? I used to go to their old location by 7th street regularly. When I saw they relocated I went to this location and it was closed although it was during their open hours. I went again a couple months after. I made sure they were open by looking at their website but they were still closed. I've driven by there during the day and at night in hopes that they're open (like their website/google saids) but every time they have been closed. The set up at Cheer Up Charlie's felt unusual at first, but it totally worked. I ordered the bac'n cheeze burger, which was pretty good but it didn't really knock my socks off. The flavors were good, although I honestly don't feel like the bacon was represented at all. They could have given me a regular (veg) burger, and I would have been none the wiser. Also, the texture of the burger left a lot to be desired. With so many amazing veg burgers on the market now, it doesn't rank up there, but it was solid and I would eat it again, especially after a night at the bars. My friend had the chipotle chik'n, which had better texture, but I liked the flavor less. It wasn't bad by any means, but again my socks remained fully intact on my feet. In the end, I swapped back and forth on how to rank this place. It's not bad, but it's not amazing. The prices leave a bit to be desired ($8 for a sandwich with no side), so really I come down at 3.5 stars, but I am bumping it to 4 just because vegan food options can feel few and far between sometimes.
