Our waitress was very nice, took our drink and food orders and then it was over an hour and a half wait for our food. People sat well after us were eating before we were. Not sure what happened. One of our plates of food was given to someone else so they had to remake it all. The other was a burger that was so dry because it sat just drying out under the heat lamp/counter. Would I eat here again? No. We didn't take pics of our food because we were starving at that point and didn't want to wait any longer. As I looked out of my hotel window, I noticed this diner that seemed to be very popular with a lot of foot traffic. I thought I'd check it out since the breakfast at the hotel was not the greatest. I went there about 9:30am was greeted by the hostess and was able to seat me right way. The menu had lots of options for breakfast and lunch. Unfortunately, I was not quite ready to place my order so the server gave me some additional time. Few minutes later, she came back and I placed an order for the French Toast Special. She certainly had that Southern hospitality. The diner seemed like it has changed since it was built. Long counter with the single stools, small tables for 2 and the larger booths for larger groups. Certainly had a diner feeling. I could tell there are lot of regulars that come here along with visitors like myself. Breakfast was delivered within a few minutes which was really good. The French Toast was very crispy and cut into strips. The server did check in with me couple of times. My experience was so good, I came back for the next couple of days for breakfast. Slow service (wasn't super busy) and the food was below average. My eggs were undercooked and the hashbrowns were super salty (I didn't even need to add any extra) the syrup for my pancakes was also flavorless. We absolutely loved the second waitress we got (first one had an attitude and then just disappeared) and the atmosphere of the restaurant was good. Iconic spot that I wasn't able to get into each other time I've been in town. It's one of Memphis' "Must Go!" Kinda spots! We sat on the new side, "please sit where you like" not very crowded at all. Immediately greeted & given menu's, water, coffee & cream. She was awesome! Friendly & kind. Then we sat FOREVA!!! Literally a laughable length of time. Watching her clean probably ten tables flawlessly. She was SOOOO focused on cleaning she never looked up at her customers one time! Not one time making eye contact or noticing we were staring a hole in her for over 35 min. So we just laughed & waited until someone noticed we were just sitting there watching the place fill around us while taking their orders & bringing their food. Normally I'd of walked 15 min into the eternal wait. Finally another server walked close enough that she side eyed me & I put my arms out like "WTH?!?!" She stopped. We asked politely "We'd like to order but our server hasn't noticed." She hesitated for a second & jumped right in & took our order & apologized. Original server still cleaning like a mad woman - quite well I might add! But still hadn't even acknowledged us again. Then waited another 40 minutes while folks who came in 20 minutes behind us were served. It's obvious to me now each server thought the other had our table. Finally the gal who took our ordered noticed us again, I gave the same expression - she went to check on our food. Then our original server noticed! "I'm going to go check on your order!" Absolutely no attention from our original server until over an hour sitting in the middle of the dining room. I've only been to the Arcade a few times but this meal was by far the best. As a fan of anything made with sweet potatoes, I had to order the sweet potato pancakes. Also a fan of all things chocolate, I added chocolate chips to the pancakes. I wasn't sure how semisweet chocolate would pair with sweet potatoes, but the combination -- coupled with the spices used in the pancakes -- was delicious. The maple syrup on top further elevated the sweetness to a very indulgent level. The side of scrambled eggs and hashbrowns offset the sweetness of the pancakes. The eggs were cooked perfectly, and the hashbrowns were crispy on top just how I like them. Overall, this was a delicious meal from first bite to last. The service was great, but we did have to wait a fairly long time for our food to arrive. So take that into consideration if you're on a tight schedule. read more

We were really looking forward to eating at the oldest cafe in Memphis and what a disappointment! I really don't want to write such a horrible review, but feel it's necessary and important to warn diners before dining here. Let's start with the hostess service. We were welcomed with smiles and southern hospitality. Much appreciated and welcomed. Things pretty much went downhill from there. We waited at least 45 minutes for our food and when it arrived our food was cold, as if it had been sitting in the kitchen for quite some time. My hash browns were cold and stale, eggs were cold, and biscuits were doughy and undercooked. I sent my food back to the kitchen and one would think that getting my food back out would be a priority, but I waited another 25 minutes. At that point, I told our server that they could cancel my order and remove my order from our tab. The server asked if she could at least box it up and I accepted her offer. Not much changed. My boxed up food was cold, hash browns were terrible, and the only items I could eat were the two biscuits. My friend's bowl with hash browns and eggs was cold and the melted processed cheese squares on top was literally atrocious. Why not purchase and use shredded cheese? The server offered to bring salsa and said it would help with the taste. Yep, basically acknowledging the food was not great. But my friend never received the salsa. We were essentially ignored. This restaurant has so much potential. There's plenty of dining space, the local history is interesting and fascinating, and there's some revitalization of downtown Memphis in the works. This was one of the recommend places to visit when coming to Memphis. Overall I had a good experience. This restaurant is known for being one of the places Elvis Presley would frequent. Aside from him a lot of other celebs have visited (Justin Timberlake, Anthony Bourdain, Johnny Depp, just to name a few). The vibe was homely and the service was great. They don't take reservations so expect at least a 20 min wait (if you come on a weekend). Now the food was nothing special. From the outside it looks like a tourist trap, but inside it's not. We came after the rush on a Sunday, and we were able to get a table right away. Our server seemed good, but tried and ready to leave. BLT wasn't great. Kids Cheeseburger was ok but the fries were good. Grilled chicken with Pepperjack cheese was good. Arcade Restaurant is on the National Register of historic places, established 1919, You got to go just for that reason, besides the breakfast was good. I sat at the counter ordered Chicken Fried Steak, Scrambled Eggs, Hash browns and Biscuits & Gravy. I Dived right into the Fried steak, Biscuits, and gravy and Hashbrowns first. When I got to the eggs, they were cold, the other items were at perfect temp. I had eaten half the meal and asked my waitress to heat up the eggs in the microwave and she came back with a newly made plate with everything on it. that's what you call Service. My husband and I just went to the Arcade Restaurant for breakfast. It looked like a cute place, but the food was awful... my husband's eggs were not cooked properly (absolutely repulsive), the gravy seemed like it was from a can and the fried chicken was just chicken tenders (probably frozen from a bag). My breakfast pizza was mediocre at best.. the pizza crust seemed like it was from the store bought section. The pizza had marinara on it not gravy (which is normally on a breakfast pizza). Also the avocado slices tasted like orange juice. The service was left to be desired.. I'm not really sure why this place has such high reviews, but we did not like it at all. Kitsch at its best. I went for the historical factor, but was pleased with the ambiance and food. We went at the right time, right before the lunch rush. We were able to find a seat immediately in a 2 seater booth. The food was no nonsense, simple fare. We got the sweet potato pancakes and the #2 biscuit option. The pancakes gave me Christmas due to the cinnamon taste. The biscuit was so soft and airy. The only item of complaint was that flies were flying around the restaurant and our hash browns were cold. Conveniently located right outside of the National Civil Rights Museum, we stopped by for lunch. It wasn't too busy and everyone was very friendly inside. When my "grilled cheese deluxe" arrived with bacon that I had asked to not be included, a replacement was delivered a few minutes later and it was delicious. It's a dirty, old, dive diner with barely average food. All their breakfast entrees came with too many sides for me. It's a new year and I'm dieting, so a side of hash browns or grits and a side of biscuits and gravy was way too much. The entrees served to the table next to me, were huge. Those that are hearty eaters, would be in diner heaven with these servings. I just enjoyed a cup of black coffee, two scrambled eggs and a side of bacon. So we were told that we MUST come to the arcade for breakfast when in Memphis. It's an institution they said. You walk in thru the old part and may be seated there or in the expanded part. The only thing that was hot was the plate. The French toast was actually interesting because it isn't your regular French toast. Think Italian bread cut in slices and deep fried with powdered sugar on top. That was enjoyable because the texture was actually crunchy and chewy but not mushy like regular French toast. I read online this was the oldest Café in Memphis and definitely wanted to stop in here while I was in town for the day. We loved sitting at the old booth and seeing the worn down designs on the table tops, you could still see all the original character of this place! For food, we wanted to try as much as possible so we opted for the Breakfast Sampler which included 2 Eggs, 1 Deep Fried French Toast, 1 Bacon Slice, 1 Sausage Patty, and 1 Sweet Potato Pancake. We wanted to try the regular Pancake and the Hash Browns too so we ordered them on the side. The Deep Fried French Toast was AMAZING, and the Sweet Potato Pancake was one of the best pancakes I have ever had! I have since tried to find these items at Cafes near us since they were so good! We had Orange Juice and Coffee with our meal and the coffee was the only thing that I actually did not really like - it was a little thicker and had more burnt flavor than I normally like.
