This was some of thee worst service I had in Memphis but the atmosphere and food made up for it. Visited on a Thursday before 1pm. My server appeared to be working both restaurants (not sure if the restaurant next door has a separate name but the two are connected via a walkway at the rear of Arcade). She would disappear for long stretches. I would see other servers passing by and they would say "ok" to my requests and never come back. I was unattended most of my time there. One example of a few: I had to ask for another coffee because the one I received, I couldn't get *anyone* to bring me a spoon/utensils or sugar to put in the coffee my server quickly dumped on the table then flew away. It was actually cold by the time she finally returned to the table to take my food order. The service was a huge letdown to the point I wanted to leave. But this is a landmark, the oldest cafe in the city. So I stuck it out and glad I did. That breakfast was delicious! The fried french toast? Frying it gives it like a beignet flavor. Whyyyy did I only order the sampler that came with one lil small piece??? Don't make the mistake I did - just order the whole plate of fried french toast on the side of whatever entree you're getting. It's soooo good! The sausage patty and strip of bacon went a long way, surprisingly. The perfect salty sidekicks to the sweet french toast (!!) and buttermilk pancake, all accompanied by cloud-fluffy scrambled eggs and buttery hashbrowns. It was certainly one of the most satisfying breakfasts I had while visiting the city. It's a shame that the service was so bad because I was looking forward to coming to this restaurant. I feel like if it was busy, the service would have been better. So maybe it's better to go during peak hours. Reasonable prices for it to be a touristy spot. Great visit to the Arcade Restaurant for a nice breakfast. This is the oldest cafe in the city of Memphis (1919) and the place is loaded with history (see pics)! You come in and seat yourself and we made our way to the "Elvis Booth", where "The King" himself sat when he visited this historic Diner. The food was very good. I had the Sweet Potato Pancakes (I added blueberries & whip cream to the pancakes) which comes with eggs, bacon/sausage and grits/Hash browns. My wife had the French Toast, which is made from baguette style bread (so good!). We both had our breakfasts with eggs and bacon. She had Hash browns, I had the grits with cheese. The coffee was fresh and pretty good. Everything we ordered came out warm and pretty quick. Our server (Lacy) was very sweet and came by several times to check on us and refill our coffees. This is a decent spot to go to if you are out and about. It gives a diner type of vibe. We sat at the bar in the second room, and had great customer service. We came for the nostalgia and were not disappointed. I love old diners and this one checked all the boxes. The decor was like being transported back in time. We showed up before they opened and were greeted as soon as they opened the doors. We were able to get the Elvis booth as we were the first ones there. Our waitress was very polite and attentive. The food was good and the prices were reasonable. Other reviews say the service is horrible but we did not experience that at all. The most awful experience. We came in for our reservations at 9am and requested to sit in the Elvis booth. We knew we had to wait because it is obviously a popular tourist attraction but we had to wait over an hour to be seated because there was a gentleman just sitting there playing on his phone. I believe that you can avoid this issue by informing patrons that if you sit and the booth you have a limited time in the booth so others can enjoy it too. In many restaurants they give you a time limit on your table but they refuse to do that at arcade. After asking to speak to the manager she had the gentle close out so we can sit at the booth. I appreciated what she did so we could sit there after waiting for so long. I was excited to try the breakfast at the arcade but it o my surprise the food was awful. The coffee and the food came out cold. The sausages were burnt. I couldn't even eat the eggs. I'm surprised you can mess up breakfast food that bad. read more

Considering the history behind the Arcade restaurant, I was super excited to eat here. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to finish the food I got because it wasn't good at all. Our waitress was very nice, took our drink and food orders and then it was over an hour and a half wait for our food. People sat well after us were eating before we were. Not sure what happened. One of our plates of food was given to someone else so they had to remake it all. The other was a burger that was so dry because it sat just drying out under the heat lamp/counter. Would I eat here again? No. We didn't take pics of our food because we were starving at that point and didn't want to wait any longer. I ordered the two eggs plate with 1/2 sausage and 1/2 bacon for my meats, both were very good. It came with two light and fluffy biscuits, gravy that was very tasty along with a bowl of cheese grits. The grits needed salt and butter. The lightly scrambled eggs were real eggs cooked to perfection. I asked about the beignets as I did not see them on the menu. I was told they did have them, so I ordered two to try. They were hot and tasty, more like a thick funnel cake than a traditional beignet. Served with syrup, they were good. My eggs were undercooked and the hashbrowns were super salty (I didn't even need to add any extra) the syrup for my pancakes was also flavorless. We absolutely loved the second waitress we got (first one had an attitude and then just disappeared) and the atmosphere of the restaurant was good. As I looked out of my hotel window, I noticed this diner that seemed to be very popular with a lot of foot traffic. I thought I'd check it out since the breakfast at the hotel was not the greatest. I went there about 9:30am was greeted by the hostess and was able to seat me right way. The menu had lots of options for breakfast and lunch. Unfortunately, I was not quite ready to place my order so the server gave me some additional time. Few minutes later, she came back and I placed an order for the French Toast Special. She certainly had that Southern hospitality. The diner seemed like it has changed since it was built. Long counter with the single stools, small tables for 2 and the larger booths for larger groups. Certainly had a diner feeling. I could tell there are lot of regulars that come here along with visitors like myself. Breakfast was delivered within a few minutes which was really good. Iconic spot that I wasn't able to get into each other time I've been in town. It's one of Memphis' "Must Go!" Kinda spots! Two bars - one liquor, one coffee. Love the huge variety photos of Memphis old days. But today the service completely missed us. We sat on the new side, "please sit where you like" not very crowded at all. Immediately greeted & given menu's, water, coffee & cream. She was awesome! Friendly & kind. Then we sat FOREVA!!! Literally a laughable length of time. Watching her clean probably ten tables flawlessly. She was SOOOO focused on cleaning she never looked up at her customers one time! Not one time making eye contact or noticing we were staring a hole in her for over 35 min. So we just laughed & waited until someone noticed we were just sitting there watching the place fill around us while taking their orders & bringing their food. Normally I'd of walked 15 min into the eternal wait. Finally another server walked close enough that she side eyed me & I put my arms out like "WTH?!?!" She stopped. We asked politely "We'd like to order but our server hasn't noticed." She hesitated for a second & jumped right in & took our order & apologized. Original server still cleaning like a mad woman - quite well I might add! But still hadn't even acknowledged us again. Then waited another 40 minutes while folks who came in 20 minutes behind us were served. It's obvious to me now each server thought the other had our table. Finally the gal who took our ordered noticed us again, I gave the same expression - she went to check on our food. Then our original server noticed! "I'm going to go check on your order!" Absolutely no attention from our original server until over an hour sitting in the middle of the dining room. As a server in my college days - here's her tip - NEVER STOP LOOKING OVER THE DINING ROOM FLOOR & notice your customers! LOOK FOR SOMEONE WHO IS LOOKING FOR SERVICE! From the outside it looks like a tourist trap, but inside it's not. We came after the rush on a Sunday, and we were able to get a table right away. Our server seemed good, but tried and ready to leave. BLT wasn't great. Kids Cheeseburger was ok but the fries were good. Grilled chicken with Pepperjack cheese was good. We were really looking forward to eating at the oldest cafe in Memphis and what a disappointment! I really don't want to write such a horrible review, but feel it's necessary and important to warn diners before dining here. Let's start with the hostess service. We were welcomed with smiles and southern hospitality. Much appreciated and welcomed. Things pretty much went downhill from there. We waited at least 45 minutes for our food and when it arrived our food was cold, as if it had been sitting in the kitchen for quite some time. My hash browns were cold and stale, eggs were cold, and biscuits were doughy and undercooked. I sent my food back to the kitchen and one would think that getting my food back out would be a priority, but I waited another 25 minutes. At that point, I told our server that they could cancel my order and remove my order from our tab. The server asked if she could at least box it up and I accepted her offer. Not much changed. My boxed up food was cold, hash browns were terrible, and the only items I could eat were the two biscuits. My friend's bowl with hash browns and eggs was cold and the melted processed cheese squares on top was literally atrocious. Why not purchase and use shredded cheese? The server offered to bring salsa and said it would help with the taste. Yep, basically acknowledging the food was not great. But my friend never received the salsa. We were essentially ignored. This restaurant has so much potential. There's plenty of dining space, the local history is interesting and fascinating, and there's some revitalization of downtown Memphis in the works. Hopefully the owner and management will take the necessary steps to improve their customers' experience. read more
