Got their chirashi lunch which comes with soup and salad. They give nice large pieces and some of my faves: herring roe, butterfish, this other white fish that was also tasty, tamago, tobiko, and of course salmon. The tuna here had a nice texture, but a little fishy at the end. My not so faves: octopus (chewy), cooked shrimp (not sweet/ebi), surf clam, and imitation crab. The tamago was perfect, perfectly cooked (beautiful yellow), and that little bit of sweetness. Service is fine. It was pretty quiet for a Thursday lunch. Seating is plentiful and comfortable. I'll probably try their sashimi bento (that comes with tempura) next time, or pick and choose certain fish for sashimi. Fun fact, this place has a changing station! I've been taking the baby with me, and it's nice to have this comfort. read more

Everything was perfect until I paid. I paid in cash and was expecting change but they never returned the change because it was enough for a tip. Finally got time to visit here after having a great takeout experience from UberEats 4 months ago. It's absolutely cool to dine here while supporting small and local businesses! We ordered (A6) Shrimp Tempura, (M25) Maki Dinner Set, 3 lbs of Garlic Butter Fried Chicken (a lot), and the (SR3) Spider Roll. All items were made to order with good presentations. Nice and tasty! Among all the great items, the Garlic Butter FC was definitely the best one we ordered. The chicken meat was juicy and the buttery taste was just fabulous. Great temperature and is not oily at all. 3lb was quite a lot of food and we didn't finish them all. The waiters were friendly and helpful. Certainly a great dining experience. A rather unique setting for a japanese restaruant. Super high ceilings, fun deco and lots of seating. The food was decently priced and sushi was standard fare, nothing really stood out, for better or for worse. Fried soft shell crab - soft shell crab is always good! It came fresh but with the standard heavy batter. Wish they somehow made it with the tempura batter, but not sure if that is doable... Typically it comes with a sauce to help balance out the heavy batter, but this did not come with any to help lighten the coating. Araya dinner - A good amount of sashimi and nigiri. The selection was the standard fare of salmon, tuna, white tuna and makerel. All of which was fresh, but nothing stood out. One thing that was special was an additional piece of salmon belly, nice fatty piece that we dont often see. Nice place to try, but with so many sushi around would try some other ones. read more

It is located in a small worn out plaza & the restaurant has not been renovated for many years. It was quite empty when we walked in, but there witnessed quite a few takeout orders. The restaurant is operated by Mandarin Chinese, not authentic Japanese & it serves Japanese and Korean fusion food. Service was prompt and polite; foods were served hot and fresh with regular portion size, tasted good but nothing special, everything was mediocre. This is one of my favourite sushi spots in Markham. Similar to Osaka Sushi, Markham Sushi, MiKi, this place is a Korean run Japanese restaurant with a few Korean dishes on their menu. I've been coming here since they opened right before the pandemic and I'm happy to say they've maintained the quality, service and presentation this whole time. The portion sizes are very fair and the price for quality is also reasonable. Prices lean on the higher end but it's about the same as other food quality a la carte Japanese restaurants in the area. There's a great attention to detail with the presentation and packaging of the food. The sashimi comes in good sizes and the maki rolls are put together well. They have plenty of specialty rolls including a whole specialty vegetarian rolls section on their menu. Their hot food is pretty good too, including the Korean dishes and the Korean fried chicken. I visited Araya Sushi for the first time last year just before the pandemic and lockdown hit during the first week of March. Situated in a plaza on Highway 7 near Main Street Markham, in what used to be a Tim Horton's. This has become one of my new fav spots for sushi & teriyaki in Markham. Araya Sushi was a much needed spot in Markham for fresh sushi and delicious teriyaki. They are a small family owned restaurant that takes pride in their food, it shows in the quality and presentation of everything that they make. The first couple of visits, we ordered their lunch bento boxes. The quality and quantity was on point. Very fresh ingredients, quantity was great for the pricing and their presentation left me craving more! We were welcomed very warmly and taken to a room at the left (back) of the restaurant with full length windows offering a view of the cars passing along Highway 7. Perfect spot to sit on a sunny day! They brought us a complimentary bowl of edamame and 2 handmade gyoza dumplings that are made fresh daily. We ordered 1 chicken teriyaki bento ($11.99) and 1 beef teriyaki bento ($12.99), and opted to add tempura shrimp to each bento box for $4 (each). The chicken & beef were tender, seasoned really well. The teriyaki glaze was mild and not overly sweet or watery. The shrimp tempura was lightly battered, crispy and not oily at all. Sushi rolls were made perfectly and all the ingredients were fresh. It was a generous portioned bento box and everything tasted amazing! Servers were great and visited our table often to ask how our food was or if we needed anything else. The highlight of our meal was the homemade gyoza dumplings that they make. They are filled with beef, pork and vegetables, lightly fried leaving them crispy on the outside with a generous amount of the seasoned filling. Since Covid, we have ordered take-out many times and the food quality and portions are still consistently good. Every time we have been in the restaurant, all of the staff are wearing masks, they have dividers set up between tables and they have been following (from what I see on each visit) a safe social distancing dining experience for their customers. read more

I came here for dine-in just before the Easter long weekend. The restaurant is located on a small plaza on Highway 7 across from Markham Village library. There is plenty of parking at the back, but it may be tricky to turn in during rush hour. I ordered Sushi Lunch B, which included dynamite rolls, miso soup, and salad. The Chicken teriyaki lunch special has the option to add in tempura for $4, and includes shrimp, yam, and broccoli. The portions were very generous! I enjoyed the tempura and gyoza dumplings the most, as it was fresh and crispy. The sushi tasted decent, but I've had better elsewhere in Markham. Service was very friendly and attentive. They were following social distancing guidelines and were very clean. It seems like a busy place with many take-out orders. Great new Neighbourhood Sushi Joint!! We decided to check out Markhams' own Araya Sushi a relatively new sushi joint in the Markham Food Scene I got the Food Crew together and we went to check this place out. Araya Sushi is located in the former Tim Hortons across from Markham Village Library. We got there on a Saturday night, we were greeted warmly in this well-decorated place. The Decor is very 'oriental' with a great colour scheme and traditional pictures adorning the walls. The Table and chairs are very comfortable and can accommodate large groups. The menu is very colourful, well presented and easy to read and follow. Once we were all seated we were given complimentary edamame. When it was time to order, our server came over and helped the kids make sure they got exactly what they wanted. She was surprised at their 'sushi knowledge'. We all took our time to choose and got some favourites including Tempura Shrimp, FriedCalamari, The Red Dragon Roll, assorted Sashimi, Nigiri topped off with a massive plate of Grilled Beef Kalbi!! Our group had a great time and appreciated the care that went into the food. Everyone enjoyed their meals, I really enjoyed my sushi's presentation. My son flipped out when he saw how big his roll was. Our evening ended with some green tea ice cream and full bellies. Came to lunch on a Monday and the restaurant was pretty empty. There were only a couple tables that were finishing up when we came in around noon. Employees seemed nice and welcoming. We ordered the Sashimi Sushi Maki Combo and Spider Roll. The fish looked fresh and tasted like freshly defrosted water. Most of the sashimi kind of tasted the same, bland and had a watery soft texture. The soft shell crab in the roll was either really small or missing some pieces. Other restaurants would have end pieces with quite a bit a leg piece sticking out (my go to piece) but there were no big end pieces here. To be honest, it was a California roll with maybe a tiny piece of crab in it. Save your money and just get something else. Also ordered the cheese Korean fried chicken and it was super disappointing. Other places I've tried will coat the chicken in cheese powder but they only sprinkle a bit of powder on top of the chicken. We asked for more cheese powder as the bottom side of the pieces had zero cheese. The waitress walks over with this small soya sauce plate that had a spoon of cheese powder and proceeded to pour it on top of the chicken while saying "some people like more, some people like less". So again, we're stuck a side with no cheese powder. We had to ration the cheese and try to put some on the other side ourselves. Later when we got the bill, we saw they charged a $1 for a spoon of cheese powder which she never told us about beforehand. Overall, will not be coming back again. The rating for this restaurant definitely did not match what I got for lunch. read more

Araya Sushi isn't completely Japanese food -- on the menu, you'll find Korean cuisine such as noodle dishes and even fried chicken. That influence is seen in their sushi rolls. I ordered a Rainbow Roll, which usually has real crab in the middle and an assortment of fish on the top. I was disappointed to see that imitation crab was used. It tasted very reminiscent of kimbap instead of a sushi roll, which isn't a bad thing since kimbap is always delicious. But if I'm paying over $10 USD for a sushi roll, I'd rather have fresh and real ingredients inside. The staff was very friendly and welcoming though! Felt like a nice neighborhood spot to grab sushi. Took a break due to COVId but thought I catch up and try out this spot as we pass by all the time. I ordered the assorted tempura, unagi roll, and Sushi lunch A. Overall this is an okay local spot but portioning are a bit small. Unagi roll was rather small and couldn't really taste the eel itself but the sauce was good. The Sushi lunch A set came with a delicious salad and a decent miso soup along with the California roll and the sushi. The sushi itself were really delish, especially the salmon and delicious torched white fish. Our favorite was actually the tempura because it was simply detectable, with the crispy but not overly oily batter. The perfect amount of salt and flavour. The green salad was standard. The sushi was definitely fresh and well rolled. The rice wasn't too thick and the right level of stickiness. This was a little more expensive ($22 not including tax and tip) but at the time they offered 10% off if you pay cash. I might be the last person in Markham to discover the news but hey at least they make good sushi! $48 Medium Sushi Maki Combo (42 pieces): 10 Green Dragon roll, 6 California roll, and 6 Spicy Salmon roll. With 20-piece Assorted Sushi: 5 Salmon, 2 Octopus, 2 Albacore Tuna, 2 Shrimp, 2 Tilapia, 2 Tuna, 2 Surf clam, 2 Eel, and 1Yellowtail. They included some of their homemade seaweed chips with the sushi platter. They were really crispy! *Take it easy on the soy sauce, this particular Kikkoman soy sauce was extremely salty.* I did find it interesting that the soy sauce was in packets compared to the usual plastic containers. Everything tasted great and the lotus crisps didn't really have any significant flavor but they were fun to eat along with the sushi. This is my family's go-to restaurant for sushi! We had the Dragon Combo (Red and Green Dragon), Araya Roll, and the Spider Roll. We ordered off of Fantuan and had our order delivered in an hour and a half. One of my favourite rolls; the green dragon roll was topped with the most "buttery" avocados! The red dragon roll was probably my least favourite as the taste had nothing special about it. The spider roll was a little bit on the dry side but the crunchiness of the crab made up for that! A big yikes from me - there's much to like about this place but one standout reason why I had to give it a poor rating. Let's start with the pros. I came with a big group of friends last night and we shared a large sashimi, sushi, maki combo boat (78 pieces for $83). All night, our waitress was courteous, attentive, and kept coming to refill our tea as well as check on how we were doing. As a new restaurant, I guess not a lot of people know about it yet so it had a relatively quiet ambiance with well lit interior and clean displays. There was ample seating for parties of all sizes and the food presentation looked great. Now let's talk about the single con that destroyed the entire experience for me - the tuna sashimi was unfresh and had a strong, awful, metallic taste. Not expecting it to be like that since everything else I had eaten was fine, I took the entire piece of sashimi in one bite. I was so absentmindedly in mid-conversation with a friend that I only really got hit by the taste AFTER I had already swallowed it entirely. I proceeded to pretend like nothing happened and went on with the meal. It wasn't until after the night was coming to an end that I was discussing with my boyfriend in the car and he said he experienced the same thing with his bite of tuna. The consistency confirmed that there must've been something wrong with it (my boyfriend even said he felt a tingling sensation in his mouth afterwards). Now as for the rest of the boat, it was just mediocre. I find with new Japanese restaurants nowadays, the "large" size boats always come with some more unique/higher quality variety of fish such as uni, scallop, or fish roe. The boat here only contained the standard variety and didn't impress me much. All in all, I wouldn't come back for the food. I have to say the service was excellent and the location is great too but I'm likely never going to get over my trust issues with the quality and safety of their fish. read more

Food Bulgogi 3.5/5 - nothing out of the ordinary but has good flavour and very balanced. Nice sweet flavours but also can taste the soy sauce seasoning. Beef was not tough and had a good amount of veggies. The plate itself was relatively small for the price but wouldnt mind ordering again. Medium sashimi sushi maki boat 4/5 - fresh sashimi with good temperature and good portion size. The rolls that came with it were well packed with toppings and quite large for their dynamite roll. Good variety of fish as well and not just your usual tuna and salmon. Gyoza 3.5/5 - complimentary from the chef which was really nice of them! While appearance wise looked over fried, the skin was actually very thin. Good amount of filling and nice balanced flavour. Again nothing too out of the ordinary but was quite a nice bite. Araya Roll 3.5/5 - a good roll with a plethora of flavours and fish. I appreciated the torched fish on top, and the sauce didnt overpower the fish flavours. They have smoked salmon inside which was evident in flavour, but that's where I didnt necessarily enjoy as well since I'm not necessarily a fan of the smoked salmon in rolls, however, overall a good roll. Rolls overall are quite large and thin rice layer which I appreciate, but not overly large where you can still enjoy the most of the roll and its toppings within. The shrimp tempura inside their rolls that have it are freshly fried with good oil and has a good amount of batter covering the shrimp. Overall rolls were quite flavourful and I would love to try their other ones. Will come back. read more

Saw this place picking up takeout the night before and thought I'd give it a try. The food was pretty good; prices were fair (comparable to "Gal" sushi), and the service was probably the best of them all. We pretty much had a server standing next to our table the whole time and she was exceptionally attentive to our needs. Ordered the basic Spicy Salmon Sushi Pizza, it was good but not spicy enough; the Kalbi was tender; Beef Bulgogi was juicy and placed on top of a load of Japchae (Korean noodles) which made it extra delicious; Jajang was again, not spicy enough, (probably because they worry certain people who 'think' they can eat spicy foods but in reality can't, will complain that it's "too spicy," I've seen this too many times before.) Salmon Teriyaki was delicious, first time seeing my 8-year-old daughter finish her food; the Uni was very fresh but the Ikura was a little on the bitter side as proposed by my 11-year-old daughter who is a true expert on Ikura because she literally eats it every week, no joke, Every Week!! The Sushi Boat and the Chicken Teriyaki was good, not exceptional but good enough. Overall had a great experience here and the sushi bar chefs were super friendly. I will definitely go back to this place to try their other items next time. As well, I will bring that one friend who everyone has, the one that is picky as sh!t and trashes everything (because they always think that there's that "one place" they went to before that is the best but it's actually not because I've tried it a couple of times and it was just so average but you can tell they have a sentimental attachment to it for some weird-ass reason) to hear what comments he has on this place, Cheers! read more

I'm not sure why I haven't heard of or seen this restaurant until now. Good food, decent portions, friendly service, 10% off if you pay in cash. My friend and I tried this place on a weekday. Getting into the plaza itself was a little tricky, but it's situated in the corner and fairly accessible otherwise. We ordered the sushi maki combo small and the bokeum jajang. The sushi Maki combo was fresh but not enough food for two. Bokeum jajang, on the other hand, came sizzling hot and the portion was huge! We ended up packing it up to go cause we were just too full by the end of it. Definitely another restaurant option in town to check out! read more

A cute Japanese/Korean restaurant located at the Northeast corner of Markham Rd and Hwy 7. We pass by all the time and decided to give it a try on a Friday night. The restaurant was very quiet when we came, supposedly because they are still new and have only been open for three months. We were seated near the window in a more private section of the restaurant. We felt like we had the whole restaurant to ourselves, haha. Our server was really attentive the entire time. We ordered Takoyaki, a Tempura Udon and Unagi Donburi paired with hot sake. The Donburi came with a side of miso soup and salad, not for the udon, however the restaurant was kind enough to offer it to us as a complimentary. They also offered us Edamame and Gyoza on the house. We appreciated the kind gesture. Prices are slightly higher than other comparable restaurants but the taste is good. Having a place closer to home without the need to drive to West Markham is worth the extra few dollars. I really liked the Unagi Donburi, however I personally felt the Udon was a tad too salty for my liking. I would come back to try some of their sushi and other dishes. There was my go to places to order from, but Araya seemed to be new on UberEats so I decided to give it a try. I ordered the 40 Piece Maki Sushi Combo not knowing what to expect. Often food from UberEats doesn't come all too amazing but that was the trade off by getting delivery service and not having to drive anywhere to get a fresh meal. Was I completely wrong! The Maki Sushi Combo that Araya made was absolutely amazing! The presentation, portion and freshness of the sushi was 10/10. From the high quality tray they put the sushi on, to the diverse set of sushi provided. I felt like I was having it straight at the restaurant being served to me at the table. To top it off, Araya sushi gave me two samplers, the Gyoza and Edamame which were delicious! To sum it up, this is forever my go to place for sushi. If you take a look at my page, by now it should be clear that I'm a big fan of sushi. So, like any other day when I was going to order sushi on Uber Eats I decided to try something new and ordered the Crazy Roll from Araya. All their rolls looked extremely promising but I decided on this one due to my preference in having many types of fish involved in a roll. Anyways, everything from the presentation to the taste was amazing and not like a typical sushi roll. I felt like I was trying some unique type of fancy sushi from a more high-end place in downtown Toronto, not a local sushi joint in Markham. For the price, they really weren't stingy with the ingredients and this dish will easily fill you up. My only wish is that the rolls were a bit smaller so that it would be easier to eat in one bite (I needed 2 to really enjoy it properly), but that is more of my personal problem than the restaurant's fault so 5 stars for sure! Salad n soup n edamame was complimentary- on the house, it was delicious. Fresh n interesting dressing. Great opening dish. Sushi was a bit of a disappointment, need more favour, it's a bit bland. Spicy salmon sushi pizza was $13.99. It was tasty, rice was a good thickness and it was a decent serving of rice : avocado ratio. The deep fry was nicely done, however it was too saucy for my liking. Spicy salmon was a little bit pricy at $7.99 as I average out all spicy salmon to ~$6 for 6 pcs. There was some crunch to it and the fish to rice ratio was nice. The rice was sticky though. Dynamite roll was generous on the filling and good ratio to the rice. This was in a combo with the plain udon for $19.99 for both. The plain udon was nice and a little sweet. It came with sliced veggies but the noodles were slightly undercooked. Then I got confused as I thought you could get a protein with the udon/sushi combo. So I asked for the combo with tempura udon. But the lady misunderstood me and thought I wanted 2 different bowls. Anyways. The tempura udon ($15.99) I felt like the broth was fishier than the plain. But still tasty. Again, the noodles were slightly undercooked. Tempura was crunchy and wasn't greasy. We got a generous portion compared to other places. Customer service was amazing. Our server was extremely attentive and topped up our tea for us. She saw us cleaning up my brother with a wet wipe and even brought us more napkins. Overall, lovely and friendly staff. Nice interior space and ambiance with a selection of Japanese combos / Korean dishes to choose from. Overall, I personally found the service to be the best part of the dining experience. The servers were always refilling our tea and were attentive, and they served complimentary edamame. For dinner, the hubbie ordered the dolsot bibimbap dish and I got the Salmon Lovers - very filling and the sashimi was fresh. Also, when I asked for extra wasabi/ginger, they really delivered! LOL. Ordered food via Uber. Decided to try their Chicken Udon stir fry and tempura shrimp. The udon noodles were good, chewy like I like and flavourful; but there was way too much lettuce for my liking. I did like the mushrooms though. Because I had no idea what to expect in it since the ingredients aren't listed. The tempura shrimp tasted good but looked over cooked, but once I got over the appearance of them and tasted it, it was good. Will give their sushi a try and see if my rating changes. read more

Random sushi craving brought me to Araya. Staff welcomed my group at the door and sat us down quickly. The menu offered both Korean and Japanese items. Araya is way better than the Tim Horton's that used to occupy this spot - LOL! I've had lunch here 6 times now via take out since I only started coming here after COVID-19 hit and needed a sushi fix. The portions are very good sizes, the rolls seem expensive but they are huge and filling or great for sharing. I'm a big fan of the Sushi and Sashimi combo - its huge and a great variety of everything. You can even add a roll and share the lunch between two people (as I've done a couple of times). In my good conscience, I cannot recommend this restaurant simply based on my observations that they were not taking coronavirus safety measures seriously. The main girl that picked up the phone was not wearing a mask. They were re-using the same takeout menu so all their customers who ordered in person were touching the same paper menu. Thankfully the chefs preparing the food were wearing masks. They did not take down anyones name for contact tracing purposes. I cannot recommend anyone visiting this restaurant during a pandemic. They aren't taking the proper precautions. It's a shame because the food was genuinely good and the portion sizes were worth your money. It's a bit pricy but good sushi is expensive. I ordered the japchae, agedashi tofu, a few handrolls and veggie speciality rolls. I didn't like the handrolls, it felt tough because there were too many layers of seaweed folded over each other. The rolls were quite good though as were the apps. I ordered take out in person and waited about 30 minutes. It seems they were quite busy with take out orders. TLDR: Do not visit during a pandemic. I was at this restaurant almost weekly when they first opened. The food was fresh, the service was great and never had any issues with their food. I ordered take-out an insane amount of times throughout the covid closures to support the local business and because i was happy with the quality. I'm not sure what has changed since they re-opened their doors earlier this year, but there def is a noticeable change. 1. Bento boxes - they used to come with 2 rolls and some noodles in the box. The price has gone up, but now it's just rice, salad, protein included with vegetables. The empty section for the noodles and rolls now have have the tempura sauce bowl shoved in. Do they think we didn't notice? The portion of the meat & vegetables has gone down significantly. Covid is no longer an excuse. If you want to charge me more, but take away quantity - NOPE - you have lost my business! 2. I read a couple of posts on here commenting on the tuna sushi. Dinner bentos come with tempura & sushi as an option. The tuna ALWAYS smells a bit funky and the colour is off. I don't bother to touch it or order it anymore. 3. Service is extremely slow unless you are a party of 5 or more. We always get seated at the front semi-circle booth which is so detached from the rest of the restaurant. It makes us feel unwelcome and overlooked while everyone else is doted on. 4. Appetizers are great, but the portions have shrunk. Agadashi used to be bigger. Now they cut it in smaller pieces to fool you into thinking you have a lot. Boneless chicken pieces are mostly dough. They used to be mostly chicken. The last time we ordered them, the batter tasted weirdly sweet. We asked and they said no, tastes the same. No, it does not taste the same if 4 people at the table are commenting the same. Taste it and then let's see you argue - ridiculous and unacceptable. 5. Server always forgets items - drinks, ice, cutlery if anyone needs any, food items are missed or not written down. The service is slow no matter how busy they are. Priority for them is the larger groups that they keep checking in on. One of our last visits we were seated and nobody came to our table for almost 15 minutes. I had to get up and go to the server at the counter to get some attention to order. I have been to some of the top Japanese restaurants in Toronto, California, Las Vegas & New York. I have no issue with paying good money for good food, but hell nah on these business that are giving us less food and jacking up their prices. read more
