I lost the case on my iPhone, and went without for a while. On Saturday, the worst happened. I dropped my iPhone on the pavement, cracking the front screen. I wasn't a happy camper (also got a parking ticket, due to some misinformation about free parking times). Took my phone into the store on Sunday, fearing the worst. Well, turns out you need an appointment. I was thinking this was an easy fix, just pop a new screen on, right? Just give me a bloody screen, I don't need an appointment! I'll do it myself! I left pretty annoyed, after first scheduling an appointment for Monday.
Monday rolls around, I go back to the store, check in, and wait some twenty minutes, learning about the Roman Empire, thinking, "What's the point of making an appointment, if they aren't going to keep them anyways?" (Did you know Trajan was one of the first to have whole columns carved, telling stories? Mostly about his conquests, but impressive work nevertheless.) Finally, a blue t-shirted gentleman walks up to me, and asks me what the problem is. "Cracked my screen." He says he'll send the most fully qualified technician out. Back to Rome. (Did you know the Pantheon's dome weighs 5000 tons?) After another period of waiting (I don't remember how long at this point) a lady sporting a stylish blue t-shirt approaches my area, asking for "Allen." Turns out the guy behind me was also named Allen, but she was looking for me. Finally!
After glancing at my screen, and inquiring into the age and status of my phone, she delivers the coup de grace on my terrible experience. "If that were that back screen, we'd have it replaced badda-bing, badda-boom. But since it's the front, that will have to be a full unit replacement." WTF? I thought Apple was good at designing things. Guess they haven't learned about the beauty of modularity yet??
So, why do I give the store five stars? The aforementioned lady decided to "surprise and delight" me. I don't know if she saw the horror and rage upon my countenance, but she proceeded, "Normally this would be two hundred dollars to replace, but... I'll make an exception for you. We'll do it for free." Free! She tells me to back up my phone, and bring it in with a charge, and gives me her card, writing something about surprise and delight, and drawing a smiley face on it. I make another appointment, and after some more waiting, (did you know Roman ships had a "corvus" which was used to allow their legionnaires to board Carthaginian vessels?) I now have a replaced iPhone sitting on the desk next to me, free of charge. (Now, if only I could get Verizon to recognize that this phone really is mine...)
Thanks to one Ms. Tamea Norwood, my opinion of Apple as a money grubbing super corporation has shifted. A little. Thank you so much, Tamea! read more
