I have had great experiences at a lot of Apple store, this however, was truly a nightmare. I bring in my MacBook Pro that I had bought less than a year ago and it is still under warranty for screen display issues. They tell me when I drop it off that it is covered and it will cost me $0 to fix. A day later I get a call and updates on the computer and they confirm the repair costs are $0. When I get a notified that the repairs are finished I go into the store. They hand me the MacBook and say I owe them $750. I let them know that the repair should be free--- they have confirmed it twice already. The manager makes me wait for an hour while he "looks up information." He comes back and says that they made a mistake when they quoted me $0. He insists I pay the 750. Like any reasonable person I say no. He goes back in the store to deliberate with his other managers. He comes back and says, our mistake all we ask is $100 for Apple care. He knows he can't get money from me because it would be breaching consumer protection laws. So he says "I will ask, but not require you to pay $100." He knows charging me anything is illegal--but still insists. Again, he is the MANAGER. Do not go here. The workers are great. Management is EXTREMELY shady, rude, and corporate needs to shake up the managers here. Go to any other Apple Store. read more

We have been loyal Apple Customers, beginning in the 1990's and have both purchased I-Phone for at least I-phones. As an educator, Mark has used Apple computers and laptops, and Thanongsak has owner several I-Pads. Recently, Thanongsak purchased an I-Phone 14 Pro. About 3 months after purchasing it, the phone started just shitting off at random times. When we took it to the Apple store, their diagnosis was that everything was fine. The offered a swap, but what arrived was not a new phone. So we returned it. A few days ago, the phone totally shut down, and would not charge or restart at all. After going to the Apple store and having it checked, we were today that app. 2/10 these phones have the same problem, and that it would cost app. $500 to fix, and that it had no value in trade in if it did not power up. This phone is just a little over 1 year old.We have been purchasing Apple because because of the quality of the product that we had know for many years. However, it seems that this is not true and more. Is there something that Apple can do to remedy this situation - as we would to continue Apple products, and we hope that Apple is still committed to producing quality products. We find it quite curious that we still own Apple computers and phones that function very well, even though they are 10-20 years old, while the newer Apple devices have been giving us problems after only 1 - 3 years. read more

Lost another star because their service sucks. Dropped off my computer with Faith who was wonderful - helpful, diligent, and friendly - and also ran 2 hours of tests last night. But true to their awful Yelp rating, their tech Jackie did a crap job investigating my computer (when it had to be checked in) and actually provided wrong information, per her manager Asa. She should not have mentioned Target Disc Mode recovery but suggested it as my first of two options. Mostly though, my issue is how they treat customers; Jackie was unprofessional, mocking and demeaning. It's clear from the years of awful Yelp reviews, that staff condescension is a systemic problem here that is top-down. I know this because Apple 4th St. manager, Asa, repeatedly failed to acknowledge Jackie's inappropriate behavior and bad computer advice, talking in circles, and escalating the situation. He talked down to me also, repeatedly referring to my concerns as a "story" and my computer repair as a "journey." He was reluctant to give me the store email so I could document this to Apple in writing. It's a shame because Faith was a breath of fresh air at this store. Here's my previous Yelp review in case it gets deleted with my update. 7/30/2020 - "This store continually sucks. Most of the staff has a power trip. Always a long wait. Often out of items you want. Horribly disrespectful of your time. I was transferring data from one phone to another which they said would take 20-25 minutes total. However, 30 minutes in and the transfer had not started. When I asked to leave and come back they said I had to stay with my phone. I was not allowed to leave for more than an hour while my phone updated and transferred data. This was really disappointing and I shouldn't have to be held there against my will when things take twice as long as the employees say it will. read more

I walked in yesterday to buy a new apple watch. A person said hello to me as I walked into the store. I then saw the watches and was a bit confused as to which model would be the best replacement. I looked around and saw about thirteen employees. Not one of them came up to me. They had no problem making eye contact; but then they'd just look away. No one came after five minutes. I walked to the guy in front who said "hi" and he said I'd have to go to the back to get help. I went to the back and asked someone for help and he said I'd have to go talk to someone up front. The "genius" at the Genius Bar with the half shaved head on the bottom and the little tiny ponytail on top? She is rude and unprofessional. Did not take time to listen to our concerns about our broken device, told us that it was our fault that it was broken and the Apple coverage would not cover it. She said if I didn't like it we could speak to a manager in an awful and combative tone. Had to spend the next two hours with a manager sorting things out bc the so-called genius rejected our service request! Terrible- she should be fired! read more

What happened to customer service??!! Apple used to pride themselves on the customer experience. Steve Jobs modeled a visit to an Apple Store after a visit to the Ritz-Carlton. Now it's like visiting a Motel 6 with flamingo yard statue sticking out a dead potted plant. I've been noticing a less inviting experience while visiting Apple Stores lately, but the 4th Street location has been the worst. From the moment you check in, it feels like you're being punished for visiting the store. From the greeters lack of interest, poor body language, and snarky demeanor while relaying appointment information, it makes for a very unpleasant first point of contact. I've been lucky with pleasant experiences while meeting with the Genius'. They seem to be the only ones holding a high level of customer experience. This last visit I met with the floor manager and they were very unpleasant. They kept a smile the entire time but their demeanor was very rude. Apple used to be so inviting and had a way off drawing you in to a store and getting you excited to be apart of the Apple experience. Now it feels like you walked into a party uninvited and they can't wait for you to leave. I left the store without a resolution to my issue and feeling pretty dejected. The greeter and manager were just big bummers (again the Genius was super nice like they were apologizing for their rude siblings). I've had much nicer experiences at the Walnut Creek Apple store. I think i will avoid The Berkeley Apple Store from now on. On the way home I decided to call Apple Support and talk to someone through the customer support number. Night and day! The level of customer service was that of what we have grown to expect from Apple. Super nice, supportive, and actually listened to me with patience. I was even able to get my issue resolved. I'll be honest, even if i didn't receive the resolution I wanted, i would have been satisfied with the A+ customer experience. I used to be a huge Apple promoter and suggested people spend a little extra for great product and amazing customer service. That doesn't seem to be the case any longer. I didn't want to leave a review but seeing the low rating of this store, it felt necessary to share my negative experience. Apple please start paying attention to customer experience again, especially at this location. I've invested too much in your products to be bummed to have to go in to a store. There was a time I was excited to go in and try the products and be treated with positive energy, now it just seems like I'm pestering the employees every time I step in a store. read more

Yesterday-- the 4 day timeline I was given-- came and went with no replacement phone, and no initiation of updates on their end. I can understand being unsure about exact shipping timelines, but it would have been easy to contact me for an update. Instead, I called them at the end of the day, and was only told that they didn't know why it didn't show up, nor when it would arrive instead. I went in here to pick up some AirPods as a gift. It was raining. My 4 year old slipped on the incredibly slick floor. She fell directly on her face. There was a rug in the very front but nothing anywhere else. The floor is incredibly slippery and there was nothing to stop anyone from slipping. All this isn't the thing that pissed me off. What pissed me off is the fact that we were surrounded by employees and none of them even glanced in our direction. I was there on the floor holding my screaming child and not one employee, even standing directly next to us, moved or asked if she was ok. I said excuse me, excuse me, nothing. I had to literally yell at one before they even responded. I asked to speak to the manager, she came over and laid the whole thing out. Besides the slick floor and zero effort to make it not so, the lack of humanity with those employees was disgusting. I took my kid out and put her in our car right outside. I looked back and an employee and the security guard looking at us laughing. I opened to door and asked the guard what he was laughing at and he shrunk right down. I get that this is a big company and can not be bothered with people, but the employees at this store have their heads so far up their asses it's absurd, disturbing, and gross. If you're looking for an easy lawsuit, go here on a rainy day. If you are one of these employees, you should be absolutely ashamed of yourself. read more

This is not the first time I've seen someone treated poorly here. I've never been witness to the entire interaction, though, so I never felt I could fairly judge. My apple XS MAX had very poor Bluetooth connectivity range. So I went to this place making appointment. The guy visually inspected the phone and simply said ITS A GREAT PHONE AND HAS NO ISSUES. I immediately connected it to my Bluetooth device and gave it to him to test, he tried once and said it had some connection range issue bcoz of the fact that there are so many devices in the store. And he ADVISED me to go back home and try it later. What a funny answer. I tried a few apple stores and tired of their treatment I sold the phone for half price. so the display went out on my MacBook Pro last night. $3000 plus to buy six months ago. Lightly used (less than 200 hours), no dropping or anything like that. I am not happy. Got to the store at 10 a.m. opening. Told me a 15 minute wait. 40 minutes later I'm still waiting. Beautiful store--lousy air circulation. Front door was open but stuffy & close. Lots of people. Asked an employee if I was in queue. They said yes but a few minutes more. I said I will be outside. A few minutes I get called to the counter & wait some more. Finally I get seen by a Mac specialist who tries & fails to run a diagnostic. At 11:15 I am free. A work order is written up and I can expect my laptop back in 6 or 7 days. 2022 experience: My ipad pro 9.7" battery is acting up and not charging. I check online apple support and it said that battery replacement was $99 so I made an appointment to the genius bar at this apple shop. The manager serve me did some test and told me my ipad is too old and battery replacement is not possible, told me to trade in for a "new" replace of the same model for $300++. Not what I expected so I left the shop all confuse on why the online option list my ipad pro battery replacement still available contrary to what this manager claims. Well being all disappointed I call the online support and they confirmed that I can still replace the battery by mailing the ipad to them and it cost $114 due to the shipping cost. Being a long time customer I lament on the how bad the service has become after Steve Job passing. Nevertheless to investigate further I made an appointment at the SF Union Sq shop and guess what, they did the check and told me battery replacement is possible and they would order the replacement ipad pro with a new battery. I would just need to come in again to do a swap for the new ipad with new battery for $99. Problem solved. So long story short avoid this 4th street apple shop. They are just out to make you buy stuff instead of helping you with your problem. Their genius bar support is so disappointing. I thought 5yrs was enough for them to improve but they totally dropped the ball. 5yrs ago experience: The staff at the genius bar do not know their stuff, they give you wrong information and do things unprofessionally. This is hands down the best Apple Store in the Bay Area. I showed up a few minutes after they were closed due to a number of reasons, and after explaining my situation to the store manager, she was kind enough to let me in and pick up my new iPhone 15 Pro Max. The employee who helped me was very knowledgeable, nice & efficient! I was in and out within minutes and can't recommend this store enough. I haven't experienced this level of customer service in a while so it was a nice change of pace. 10/10 experience. read more

I have NEVER owned an Apple product before. Bought an Apple iPad pro that crashed on me 4x. I got the phone support and they could only do so much. The phone support was fantastic though. They made an appointment for me at this Apple store 4th street. WORST EXPERIENCE EVER. I had an appointment and was told to take a seat. A lady was assigned to me after being late. Instead of helping me, a new comer to the Apple world, being patient with me, understanding my frustration of not getting this product to work, alloqing me to vent etc, this employee was trying to sell me products instead. She did not help me as a new customer to Apple at all. As she's talking, I covered my face with my hand and told her that she is overwhelming me with all her sales etc. I just want to reset this iPad pro and be on my way. Told her that im at a point of frustration that I am literally about to send the product back. She literally left me sitting at the "genius bar." She came back, told me my iPad was reset. I asked her if she knew what I needed or what I'm going through. Really? I'm done. I do not know how to work this product that I spent thousands on. Nope! She was not going to help. Maybe she was going to help but I was just shocked that Apple wouldn't bend over backwards for a newbie. I've had better service at MetroPCS, to be honest. I told her that I wanted someone else to help me. She walked and got another person. I explained to this male person my issues that I have had the last 4 days. I said "nothing is working and I am tired of this f%&$ing machine. It's a machine. I can't f$%&ing figure it out. It can't possibly be f%$&ing rocket science." He says to me that I've now used expletives three times. I clarified that I'm not swearing at him. He knew that. I told him that no one was helping me. He said that it's a 15 mins appointment, and that I can sit with everyone else to learn my iPad, and that I will not be able to get 1 on 1 help. Everyone else was helped. Tons of Apple employees are all standing doing nothing, looking like they would be willing to help. I politely took that my iPad, and thanked him and left the store. I think I was more shocked that Apple employees did not want to help a newbie. You lost a customer for life, Apple 4th street. Got in my car, drove to Apple EMERYVILLE, as I need to get this iPad to work. Omg!!!! They were SO nice. I got there at 7.30pm. Store closes in 30 mins. They assigned a guy named SAMUEL to me immediately. He was SO gentle patient, cared, understood my frustration, empathized all that I was feeling, told me that I will be okay and that he was honored to help me as a newbie, with my iPad pro. He helped me setup the iPad. He looked at all the wires I purchased to connect to my computer and told me how to work it. Thought we everything. What do ya know?! The iPad crashed again. Again, he was gentle. Helped me with respect, and kindness. Started the whole setup process again with me. He needed to leave to close the store, got another person who continued to help me look for classes, so I can get trained. This is what I'm talking about. This is what I needed. Just simple kindness in helping a newcomer whose Apple iPad has crashed 4 times. Never will I step into the Apple 4th store. I'll just go to the Apple Emeryville. read more

I left my computer to be repaired. A small issue I could've handled on my own but they seemed to graciously volunteer to do it. Then they proceeded to erase my computer without backing anything up. Didn't check with me or anything after I specifically discussed backing up the computer. When I picked it up they acted like nothing happened. Just stared at me and shrugged. I explicitly told them I needed to back the computer up and would do so at home but they insisted they would. Now all my data is lost. The manager didn't even apologize. Just shrugged. Never have I had such poor customer service. No accountability. Clearly apple thinks they're doing us a favor to shop there. Never going back to the 4th street store. The worst!!! read more

After waiting 40' to have my keyboard check and observing employees socializing with each or other or customers I approached the person with a tablet and he said another 10'. There is only one person available for dealing with computer problems. Another 10' and nada. This is what you get Apple arrogance after you pay dearly for their products. So many red shirts and such poor customer service. I needed to buy cables for my Mac too I will be leaving my money somewhere else. Maybe my teenage neighbor will take care if my keyboard. read more

I love the "Technology Candy Store" aspects of going into an Apple Store (including this one). They offer me good practical tips on my iPad and let me play on the iPhone 4S or Mac and allow me to consider the possibilities. As for the Building? It's glassy and pretty, but completely out of place (architecturally) within this 4th Street Neighbourhood. What is the City of Berkeley trying to do, model Houston Zoning practices? But when Sales Tax revenue floats the Municpal Boat, I guess you do what ya gotta do (with Progressive issues such as 3rd World Supply Chain practices put on the back burner). read more

Yelp Challenge 365 # 118/365 This is a continuation to my Apple Emeryville Store review.... After a courteous nudge to the Berkeley store (from Emeryville) and 35 minutes on the road to drive 6 miles and NO PARKING anywhere...... I get to Apple, my appointment is 1:30 pm. I check in at 1:15 pm. Standing by the Genius Bar...don't want to miss them calling my name.... 1:40 I'm looking around and there were a few people who got there after me and served before me :(. 1:45 I ask one of the hosts about my turn.... I am told to wait because they are running behind schedule. WTH? I'm already there...what's another few minutes.... 2:05 pm I get called. Go up to the Genius Bar and explain my phone has a broken face and I would like to get it replaced......Wait..... Wait.... Into the computer they go and they inform me that my Apple Care is not the correct insurance; that in fact, I needed Apple Care Plus.... Here's the number to call, I've marked your files, Good bye! Get that????? So I do make a call to that 800 number....they offer to refund me the Apple Care fee and apologize they didn't sell me the correct product. They of course, blamed my cell service (Sprint) for their lack of explanation. Doesn't help me or my phone now does it? The worst part of this entire fiasco was how they took all of 4 minutes to tell me they can't help me and booted me out the door! And this, is the end of my Apple story. ps 4th Street in Berkeley is a pretty neat street to browse and coffee on.... that was the redeeming thing of my day. read more

3 visits later... And I got my iPhone 7 battery replaced for the nominal fee of $29. Last year, Apple instituted a program that offered $29 battery replacements on iPhones 6 or later. The cost doesn't include tax but with it, it's ~$31. A steep discount, considering the original value is $79. This offer ends December 2018, so I would highly encourage getting this done if you have battery life issues. **Just make an appointment prior to your visit** Like the DMV, this place will keep you waiting without one. It's really easy though; you can do it in person at the store or online. If you want to have it done the same day, make the appointment before the afternoon or late afternoon because they stop repairs an hour before closing (this store closed at 8pm on a Saturday). You also need to abandon your phone for about an hour (this is the hard part), but on 4th street, there are lots of things to do while you wait. I was surprised how quickly I was able to pick up my phone after having lunch across the street. They told me to come back in an hour and true to their word, a tech came out with my phone within an hour. Why it took 3 visits to accomplish this? Well, the first time, my battery degradation (aka battery health) wasn't at 80%. Techs look for this before they approve you for repair other than water damage or any other owner-inflicted damage. If they see signs of this, you won't be eligible for the program. The second time, I arrived an hour before closing, so they were no longer taking any repairs. But after approving me that day, they ordered the part ahead of time and they gave me 5 days to come in, drop it off and wait an hour for it to be ready. You don't have to pay at that time; you pay when you pick up your phone. And I guess third time's the charm. So, make sure your battery health is at 80% or lower on an iPhone 6 model or later (sometimes, they can be flexible with that percentage as a Business Insider article states) & make an appointment for repair well before closing. And then you'll have yourself a brand new battery at a reduced price. There's also risk of them losing information on your phone, so they encourage you to back it up. Luckily, that didn't happen to me but it's probably not a bad idea if you do. With that, I got what I came for; just took a little patience to do it. read more

Like other reviewers, I will probably avoid this store in the future, given the abysmal customer service. I spent 2 hours of my life just to buy a new phone yesterday (a Sunday). No, I didn't have an appointment. But I knew exactly what I wanted and had even checked online to be sure they had it in stock. Since when do you need an appointment to shop retail? Long story short, not only were they not able to transfer data from old phone to new (I had to do it myself at home); but when I got home I found out they hadn't even successfully activated my phone (i.e. calls failed). Had to return the next day and a WONDERFUL sales specialist named LANCE was able to put me right. 45 minutes later I was finally on my way with a new SIM card and a phone that worked. Conclusion? If you shop here, don't waste your time with anyone but senior sales specialists. read more

I recently went to the Apple Store in Berkeley to purchase a USB SuperDrive for playing CDs & watching DVDs. I got my first laptop in 2003 & was a PC. Since then I always have owned PC laptops until five months ago when I was do to get a new laptop I decided to make the leap from PC to Apple. I'm glad I made the shift as I bought a MacBook Air at this location five months ago. I have been very happy w/ my MacBook Air yet it doesn't have a built in player for CDs or DVDs hence my return here. Employee Will helped me out & provided great customer service. I took my MacBook Air to the shop & was able to set up the USB SuperDrive w/o a problem. I tested a DVD & CD on it that worked fine. I also learned a shortcut trick once you select your DVD on the screen simply press "command E" to eject the DVD. If you have only had PCs & are on the fence about switching to Apple I would say make the shift. It is a bit more expensive upfront yet have found Apple products to be much better so are worth the extra investment. Both times at this Apple Store I also appreciated the excellent customer service. read more

Tried a few times to get a new iPhone and it takes 5 minutes to even get greeted and have your name put on the list to be helped and then.... who knows; never made it past 15 minutes of waiting. I'm usually a big fan of Apples and their products. Well I'm still a big fan of Apple products, but not a huge fan of this Apple store. Many of the staff members are pretty inattentive. I usually find them talking amongst themselves and ignoring customers. The last time I came here with my brother in law to buy an iPad, it took us almost 20 minutes to try to get someone to ring us up. It seemed like every time we asked someone they took us they were busy and they'll get someone else to help us. Then they would go back to talking amongst themselves... But when we finally did find someone to ring us up, he was nice, friendly, and quick. I don't recommend this Apple story. I would rather go to the Emeryville apple store. read more

Literally the worst Apple Store experience I have had to date. The employees including the manager did not know how to deal with the situation which ultimately was not even a possibility to begin with. That information would have been valuable in the beginning, after I clearly stated what I needed to do, rather than having me return to the store later in the day only to turn me away. I went to the Apple Store this morning and had a horrible, horrible experience. I have been there several other times and the service was so so, but today went above and beyond in the terrible service. I came in because my phone just randomly stopped charging (Apple products are made poorly on purpose so that they break easily, but that's another rant). I came 5 minutes before opening and was helped fairly quickly. HOWEVER.. the conversation I had with the person who helped me was so uninformative and uncomfortable. He told me that I had to get a new phone because they couldn't fix mine. Wouldn't tell me what was actually wrong with the phone or how it happened. I asked how I could prevent it from happening in the future and he said, "take better care of your phone." I was appalled by how unhelpful the employee was and was already upset that I had to spend $400 on a new phone for no apparent reason. Ended up waiting a long time to get my replacement phone because they had one (1) person handing out like 10 replacement phones and doing payments. YET, I could see at least five (5) employees just standing around doing NOTHING. I think the company could benefit from better task allocation. I don't ever want to step back into that establishment again, although I will probably have to in 2 weeks when one of my chargers or headphones or something breaks. read more

I didn't have an appointment but I was able to book one within 5 minutes during a Tuesday morning. About 5 minutes later, Aaron was helping me get a new charger for my MacBook Air. I broke mines at the cord bend. Thank goodness I have Apple Care or that would've been a hefty blow to my poor college student wallet! (Plus, this is the second time my MacBook charger broke. Ugh I needa learn to take care of my charger better...) What's even cooler was that Aaron showed me how to bunny ear loop my cord so that I wouldn't be able to break my charger as easily. Thanks for the tip Aaron! Even though it was kind of busy and all the workers looked like they were catering to somebody, I was in and out of Apple within 20 minutes. Great service! :) read more
