I haven't been to Hi-Tek Communications in a few years. The last Samsung I purchased then was working fine until a week ago, I always come here because the staff here is knowledgable and friendly, I drove all the way from Vallejo to Berkeley and they didn't disappoint! I found out my phone was running low on memory and a security app was causing other apps to crash. I purchased a new Samsung with 128gb and they told me to come back in an hour because the transfer of my information from the cloud takes a while. I came back and my new phone had everything from my old phone I was so happy! They are one of the friendliest and best stores I've been to in a very long time! read more

This is not Hi-Tek anymore but a Metro Mobile phone store. I went there to understand why my European phone was not working. I met a guy who took two minutes to arrive because he was doing some important stretching exercises in the room behind the store. Asked me "What do you want ?", me: "understand what is not working with my phone and perhaps buy a cheap phone if this a problem with my phone just to be able to get some basic phone calls and my sms". He looked at it "hmm this is not an american phone" then looked at my SIM card "hmm this is not an american card" obviously implying with his tone that this was just crap. 5/20/18 Update: For an idea of how rude these people are, just read the manager's response below. For the record, I am a real, *female* person. There are far too many places providing the same service for me to waste my money on the inept ones. Original review (12/27/17): I saw the good Yelp reviews for this store so I called them to find out whether or not they could repair my broken Android phone screen. The guy I spoke with initially was really polite and helpful. He told me to come in with the phone and it would be $99 to fix the screen and that it would take 5 days since they did not have the part in store. When I arrived, another man was behind the counter who said he was the manager. He was incredibly rude and condescending when I told him I was there to drop off the phone and acted as if I had invented the phone call. "Are you sure you called this store? How can someone quote you a price over the phone? I guess I need to talk to my staff." I ended up asking him if this store actually repaired phone screens since he seemed so confused. When I asked him how much it would actually cost and how much time it would take he said he had no way of knowing that on the spot and that he would need to "call me later with a quote." Against my better judgment I gave him my info so he could call me with a quote. That was over a month ago. He was a complete jerk but I guess he did me a favor since there was another store on Bancroft that was able to fix my phone fast and with no attitude. read more

sad trombone - i called the place and asked if they were open and had a lightning adaptor for my iPhone5 - i was willing to pay $25 or whaterver they were going to charge. The guy said ya - so i hopped in my car at 6:05pm and arrived there at 6:20 only to have them have the doors locked and no one answered the phone. This was on a wednesday night. Amazing, fast, smart, friendly, extraordinarily reasonable prices...I could go on. Eddy was fast efficient and brilliant! He not only fixed my Samsung s7, but reanimated my older Nexus cell. I have been to numerous places in the Berkeley area and nothing has compared to Hi-Tek. Before you go elsewhere check these guys out. I've used Hi-Tek twice now. In 2009, after the Economy tanked, I decided to leave AT&T after becoming fed-up with some of their nasty Customer service reps. I figured I could save some money as well. I bought a nice(used) Sprint HTC EVO from someone on Craigslist, and had it flashed to work with Metro service. The guys at Hi-Tek were cool, flashed my phone quickly, and were cheaper than anyone else advertising the same service. They answer the phone when you call, and have decent hours. The phone worked great, and I never had any trouble with it, but I just couldn't live with Metro's service/coverage. Maybe it's better now.....I don't know? I switched to T-Mobile (through Costco), and making calls was better, coverage was better, but trying to use the internet was a TOTAL F'N crap-shoot. I'm with Verizon now, and it's expensive, but it does work everywhere. A few weeks ago, my girlfriend's MetroPCS phone crapped-out. I still had my T-Mobile HTC one. T-Mobile bought-out Metro, the phone was compatible, so I went back to Hi-Tek, they quickly popped-in a SIM card, and switched it over. They were $20.00 cheaper than the Metro store in the Hilltop Mall, and did it in 5 minutes. She loves the phone, and so far, it's working fine. read more

Best cell phone advice in the neighborhood. These guys know their business, their technology, and I was pleasantly surprised by the high degree of service. I came in to buy a charging cord for my phone. They sold me one. I didn't ask for a receipt, I was in a rush. Then the cord didn't work. So I had to take it back. I was expecting to have to be that asshole who haggles for his refund, no receipt and all. Dude was happy to explain that Apple made some third party accessories not work on iOS 8.4. Thanks Apple, way to screw your customers! Instead, Hi-Tek Communications unpackaged a much more expensive charging cable that did function properly and gave it to me as a replacement. In the integrity department, these guys are 1, Apple 0. They also let me bring my dog into the store. That's just chill. read more

These guys are awesome. Needed to get my Note 2 fixed because the jerk I bought it from reported stolen the day after I bought it so the IMEI was bad. These guys fixed it in a day. Dropped it off, picked it up next day. Could have even done I on the same day but I ha errands to run. My go to phone repair store, they even have a bunch of coupons on their yelp. read more

Verizon, AT&T and Sprint all have awesome phones but their data plans push upward of a hundred bucks a month. Metro PCS has a $40 plan but their phones are straight out of 1998. Where's the justice? I took a trip to Berkeley this morning to get my Verizon Droid flashed to the Metro PCS network. Now I've got the cool phone and the $40 phone bill. Is it Verizon fast? Hellz no! It's 2G fast! Slower than molasses!. But at a savings of six hundred bucks a year, I'm not complaining. I'll admit it's more hassle than some people want. It costs $40 and takes about an hour and a half to reprogram your phone. Sprint and Verizon phones work for Metro PCS. AT&T and T Mobile phones can be brought over to Simple Wireless. It's a bit of a headache to leave the city for anything but there were some awesome Indian spice shops and restaurants on nearby San Pablo so it made the hour go by quickly. I'd recommend this to anyone and do it again in a heartbeat. read more

At More than HALF the Apple OE repair price It has the same pressure feel and color and much much faster to get my phone back. I am a devoted Ghettro user. $40 a month unlimited everything, no late fees when I forget to pay my bill, no bells and whistles, just something to make my life a bit simpler. I've paid my bill at this location a few times and the associate there has always been helpful and nice. However... This month I go in, pay my bill, no issues, same nice guy. Then at about 10 pm at night I get a call and I can barely understand what the guy is saying so I tell him he had the wrong number. This happens frequently because I just changed my number. Then I get a text afterwards saying 'you know who this is, you just paid your bill with me.' Yes, the guy from Metro called and texted me without me giving him permission. This really happened. Is this even legal? I doubt it. I hate to put a guy on blast for his fine efforts to court a lady, but seriously. read more

A couple of months ago, a man named Peter Mui gave a presentation in my class Geography of Garbage at SFSU. His presentation was on the fact that most people chuck their electronics when they can actually be easily fixed. This discarded e-waste (yes, even if you participate in an e-waste "recycling" program!!) gets shipped to third world countries, where poor people literally burn the electronics to harvest the metals that are inside. Does this sound appealing to you? Not me. So, I bought a new screen for my G2x on E-Bay for $40 and tried to fix it myself at one of Peter Mui's fix-it clinics. It was too complicated, so after some research I found Hi-Tek. In about 36 hours my phone was fixed for $50 with the part I bought. I should have let them order the part, which I didn't realize they can do. All in all, I spent $90 total instead of paying $200+ for a new phone, my phone looks like new and functions perfectly, and I feel satisfied knowing that I didn't contribute to the horrible problem of e-waste. I've visited this place twice for different repairs on my Samsung Galaxy, and both times I've been satisfied with the quality of work they produce. The first time I came here I needed to fix a crack in my screen, I stopped by to drop off my phone at opening and by 1pm the same day it was completed and they even charged me less than their competitors(Others wanted $150, but they did it for $85 out the door). My second visit was for a button repair, this repair took a little bit longer, but was still done in a timely manner and since they had to swap the screen out to fix the issue, they gave me a custom colored screen for no extra charge. read more

Great!!! Excellent service and great deals. I used to go to a larger electronics store thinking that was better. I realize now that dealing one on one with great service technicians like Indy and Eddy at a smaller location is a much better way. Indy was able to get me a great deal and explain all the high tech information stuff in a simple, yet quick, way. Finally! Service technicians that even a dinosaur like me (and any technical dinosaur you may know.) can understand. He even did it with a big smile on his face and I'm sure he gets those same questions all day long. Eddie stayed after the store was supposed to close to help me with some other issues that I had questions about. Having a great phone and a good service provider is important but having great service technicians that are friendly, helpful and understand your issues just really makes this company shine. Eddie was very helpful in getting me set up on Ultra Mobile. I had already gotten the SIM card mailed to me and I could have gotten set up just by calling Ultra Mobile. But, I don't know what I'm doing, and I stopped by Hi Tek. Eddie could have told me to call Ultra Mobile myself, but he did it for me.
