They have one of the best ham and cheese croissants in the area! I have been quite a few places and very unimpressed until I came here. So far they never have that previously frozen taste- always seems like they are made fresh for the day! The croissant is flakey, and it's an easy in and out- never a long wait and it's very filling! My go to donut spot! I frequent this place at least twice a week and never have I been disappointed in the quality. The couple that runs the shop are extremely polite and they know what I usually order. My go to donut, the chocolate bar! Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, the chocolate is not overpowering and just plain perfect. I wanted to love this place! We were looking for a new donut shop in Costa Mesa and this has a very high rating. When we walked in, the woman behind the counter wasn't wearing a mask. I said, "No mask?" She said, "I got mask," and looked toward the kitchen. We're seniors and used to go for donuts once a week and now haven't gone in months because of the coronavirus. The State regulations call for masks in public and have very definite regulations for places serving food. We won't patronize any business unless the staff are wearing masks. For years my husband brought home the most delicious donuts. Yummy little pink boxes simply appeared filled with delicious assortments; though I never knew from where. We are talking years. One day I got my nails done next door to Old Time, and ran in to take him home a treat. I was driving his car, and the shop owner recognized it! Holy cow. Apparently this was THE source of all those delicious filled little pink boxes we'd been enjoying forever. The shop certainly doesn't look special, but looks can be deceiving, and they are, because those folks KNOW THEIR DOUGHNUTS. We've probably sampled nearly everything in her cases over the years, and all I can offer is: Fresh fresh fresh and always superb. I have been frequenting this mom and pop donut place for 10ish years and it is always consistently good. I especially like their cinnamon rolls which have different topping options. I love the maple and the traditional they are cooked well slightly crispy outside NEVER wet undercooked on the inside. Same with the Old Fashioned. They have good prices too! I am writing this review because I drove through the place on Newport and the donuts were gross made me realize how I take this place for granted. The décor and strip-mall is old and tired but not dodgy ( I secretly want to rename this place Donuthole in the Wall haha). Service is pleasant and there is often a group of Old Timers sitting out front. Right now (Covid) outdoor eating only. Proprietor was wearing a mask. These donuts are really delicious. Problem is there are always fruit flies in the case. Also, they are never open. There are no posted hours so you just have to try and see if they're open.
