My friend and I visited Anthos for brunch around 10:30 on a Sunday. The line was long and it was consistently like that during the length of our stay. It gave us time to browse the two menus (one drink and one food) and stare at all of the baked goods in the cases up front. After about 15 minutes, we were greeted at the register and placed our orders for dine in. We were given a number to stick on our table and had about 3 open tables to choose from. Our food was out within 10 minutes and the drinks within 5. The caramel Freddo cappuccino was slightly sweet, but delicious when all mixed up. I had the pan au raisin from the pastry case. It was flaky, sticky, and full of rum soaked raisins. I loved it. My friend purchased a chocolate croissant and monkey bread to go. I sampled the monkey bread and it was still warm, sticky, sweet, and so cinnamony delicious. She said the chocolate croissant was flaky and not dry at all. For my main, I had the croquet madame with a side salad. The salad was dressed with a light vinaigrette and had a few cherry tomatoes sprinkled throughout. It was a bright and fresh addition to the otherwise rich double stack of sourdough bread covered in ham and cheese. I thought the bread was toasted perfectly and supported all of the elements on top. I purchased a $5 loaf or sourdough to go and they gladly sliced it for me. The bathrooms are down the hall and are single stalls. The women's was clean and spacious. The dining area is bright and there are a good amount of tables and a few bar seats, but it really does get crowded when it's full capacity and the line weaves through the tables. read more

This place is pretty packed on the weekends! The space is really trendy and beautiful inside. The staff is really nice and really takes the time to explain what items they have in their pastry case even though it gets really busy. They have a lot of pastries and a menu for food from the kitchen. I just had a pastry and coffee which were excellent but I'd love to try their brunch here sometime. Their pastry case is gorgeous and everything is so fresh. They have so many Greek pastries I haven't seen anywhere in pittsburgh before, including filled donuts and many types of danishes. Their hummus and pita were also homemade and so good! Love that they have homemade soup too. They do have a decent amount of seating inside with a coffee bar. I only had enough time for a quick stop, but this place left me wanting to return before I even left. Family run greek cafe with a lot of love. The owners were friendly and happy to answer any questions about the menu. All the bread and cookies are baked fresh. Just looking at the case of pastries, sandwiches, and breads was enough to make me drool. I wanted to hand over my entire wallet and say "give me one of everything"! I didn't even get a chance to look at the proper menu because I was too busy staring at the display case of goodies. I got a traditional macchiato and a ham sandwich to share with my husband. The cafe is bright and beautiful with plenty of natural light! I love the counter seating area with beautiful blue and white tiles. There were plenty of tables open, but we went later in the day. There are not enough words to express how amazing Anthos is! I have been there 3 times now. Each time is better than the last. I've had a good bit of the items on the menu. I absolutely love their spanikopita! Their bread is terrific. Their mushroom toast (a bit smaller than the other dishes) is yummy as well. I stopped by here this past Sunday with my wife and our twins for our morning coffee. Every Sunday morning we try to hit up a new local coffee shop and on this morning we decided to go to Anthos. This was actually my third time at Anthos as I had tried it right after fellow Yelp elite Ellen K had recommended it to me and then again for a recent Yelp Elite event. That event made a positive impression and I just had to bring my whole family back again for another try so that I could write a review this time! Anthos is located at the busy corner of Shannon Ave and Castle Shannon Blvd. This happens to be right near a T station and so if you have little ones like me, they can be entertained by the T consistently rolling by. The inside of the shop is fairly large with plenty of seating and a huge pastry display area. They also have a couple of tables out the back door for you to sit at whenever the weather is nice. For our coffees on this morning both my wife and I went with a Greek frappe, a little bit sweet. Then the pastry case was calling me and so we got a croissant filled with Italian sausage and another with pastry cream and fresh fruit. Finally my wife added a ginger molasses cookie. Even though our order was to go we were given a number and chose to wait at a table outside. Our pastries came out to us about five minutes later and while we saved the croissant with pastry cream and fresh fruit for home, the cookie and Italian sausage croissant didn't make it. Man was the Italian sausage flavorful and I loved it inside of the crispy croissant crust which also had some everything bagel seasoning on it. After about another 10 minute wait where I kept checking the coffee counter area for our beverages, our coffee was brought out to us. The coffee here was good as the coffee itself was darker and the evaporated milk was flavorful. On its own the coffee was on the bitter side, but when paired with that evaporated milk, it was ridiculously good. My wife thought the same and really enjoyed her coffee here. We didn't end up eating our other croissant until the following night but I am happy to admit that it was still delicious. While the pastry wasn't as crispy as it would have been whenever we freshly bought it, it was still flavorful. Then the lemon pastry cream and fresh raspberries complemented each other perfectly and both my wife and I enjoyed it. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. While it's not the most convenient for us North Hills folks to access it, my wife and I have already made plans to have breakfast here on our next date day. read more

Worth the wait! Awesome brunch spot in Castle Shannon (get in early because it does get crowded and they don't take reservations). In addition to breakfast sandwiches and sides, there is a great assortment of pastries, coffees and other baked goods in the cases. My breakfast sandwich was savory and delicious, bacon crispy, avocado fresh, bun nicely toasted. The marjolaine cake was nutty, creamy, honey-flavored and chocolaty all at once. The lady at the front counter was extremely nice. Our cappuccino drinks had been forgotten and had to remind them a few times (they did come out eventually) but in fairness, it was extremely busy that day and they were doing their best to serve many different tables. My daughter and I stopped for brunch this morning, and it was our first time here. I got a Greek style Turkish Coffee & my daughter got a Greek Frappe. We got a mix of pastries from the case to include a Koulouri (A Greek style Sesame Bagel), a hand pie filled with Feta, a square pastry filled with sausage, and a piece of Orange Cake. Everything was fantabulous. In addition, I got a loaf of Sourdough Bread to go, which I will try later at home and my daughter bought a Baguette to take to her home. Our group found this place after looking at nearby brunch restaurants. Parking was a little difficult to find, but probably expected near downtown Pittsburgh. We grabbed a parking spot on the street, and walked over. We were there around 2 PM. We had to stand in line and order our food. Someone came and grabbed a table for us, while the rest of us ordered. The service is amazing...... so authentic the owner and his family are literally from Greece! It's as Authentic as you can get! The coffee was amazing, that chocolate brioche so feathery and sweet and the sesame bagel was sooooo good. We were there for brunch today and had the breakfast sandwich (fluffy, cheesy eggs, fluffy brioche, crispy, thick-cut bacon, and *huge*), the Greek island bowl (thick, unctuous Greek yogurt, fresh fruit, toasty walnuts, and beautiful Greek honey, also *huge*), and the Kalimera breakfast basket (two brioche buns, a raisin roll, a piece of ciabatta, and a croissant--all top-notch) served with Cretan honey, jam, and butter. Their orange juice is freshly squeezed, and their cold brew is strong and absolutely delicious. You order at the counter and find a table; the staff gives you a number and will bring your food to you. It is evident that the food is being prepared with excellent quality ingredients. Baked goods are also amazing--best kourabiedes I've ever had. The honey sesame almond cookie is absolutely delicious--toasty and not overly sweet. The resturant is always busy, so sometimes you have to wait for a table especially on the weekends. All the food tastes like it's made fresh. Now I'm a regular: breads are superb (olive I don't eat but buy for friends-superb), whole wheat sourdough (I gobble it up), breads with raisins/cranberries (yes, please), their orange cake (to die for), their cookies and all of their daily sandwiches (yumdumpalous-- I don't know what that means but it sounds like the best way to describe them). The proof is that the place is always crowded. So go early and often. And go visit the other stores nearby. It's a Gastro experience every step of the way. We stopped at Anthos for lunch a few days ago. Like others have stated I was a bit overwhelmed when I walked in. The counter is filled with wonderful looking pastries bread and other delicacies. The menu is pure Greek and reminded me of being in Santorini years ago. I ordered the Moussaka and my wife had the Spanakopita, both came with a delicious salad. A friend has been raving about Anthos for months and has deemed it the best restaurant in the South Hills. We took advantage of their Thanksgiving menu and sheesh, she wasn't kidding. It was absolutely phenomenal. We had already ordered a complete Thanksgiving meal from V&V, but wanted to supplement it a bit especially since I'm a vegetarian so wouldn't be eating the turkey or ham. We ordered the squash soup and bread to enjoy the day before Thanksgiving. It was by far the best soup I've ever had. I'm pretty particular about my food and prefer my food to restaurant food typically, but I couldn't have made a better soup. It was so flavorful and smooth... wasn't overpowered with onions or anything... just perfectly balanced and spiced. We also got the farro salad and mac and cheese and gosh was I mad at myself for not ordering multiples! The farro salad was such a nice addition to traditional Thanksgiving food, hearty and light at the same time... nutty and sweet while still being savory. The Mac and cheese was better than our family recipe and was so flavorful and creamy. The brioche rolls has such delicate layers and intense butter flavor. It all was absolutely incredible. This was our first time at Anthos. We went for Mother's Day brunch and the food did not disappoint. I am Greek so I always feel like I am over critical of Greek dishes, considering I grew up eating them my whole life. I really enjoyed Anthos traditional items and a few unique twists on some classic items. I had Tsoureki French toast which was sweet and savory. My only complaint is I wish the portion was larger! This dish is definitely on the sweeter side because there are cherries, it might have been ideal to add some eggs to my meal for balance. My husband had Croque Madame which he really enjoyed, everything was cooked to perfection. My boys had Mac & cheese and a kids cheeseburger. The Mac & Cheese was a little on the runny side, but my son ate every last bite. And I think we got the wrong burger for my youngest son, we ordered a kids slider and a huge cheeseburger was sent to our table. The burger itself was amazing, it reminded me of when my Papou used to make us cheeseburgers! All of the moms got free mimosas which was a sweet added touch. And there is plenty of items to purchase like olive oil, tea, honey etc. Although our meals were fantastic, I will say it is on the pricy side for kids meals. My oldest son had Mac & Cheese and added chicken. That made his meal alone more than mine. My youngest son had a kids cheeseburger but it ended up being $11. Once again I think we got charged for the lunch portion, which was okay we took the left overs with us. I also had a Greek iced tea which I highly recommend. I loved it so much I bought the box of tea and the honey! We also shared a piece of Galaktoboureko. The portion was huge compared to what you would get at a Greek food festival. It had almost an orange taste to it which was different, we all enjoyed it. I would absolutely go back, this is a fantastic spot for brunch with family or friends. This place is so cute! And so very Greek! It's packed at all hours but they have a menu that keeps the crowds moving along. Coffee is decent but the food is so flavorful. They have a full on bread basket that seems like a joke on the menu but it's real and it's delicious. (More suited as a dish for the table) but the butter, honey and fig jam are a nice compliment. And some days you just need to eat all the bread. The salads taste authentic and fresh. You won't be getting any brown avocado like you see a lot of other places. And the herrrrrbs in it don't miss. Visited today for the first time. We loved the coffee and pastries we had last year while in Greece, so I was excited To try this place. I had no idea it was here and now am glad it's so close to work. First impressions are fresh, clean and new. The place was immaculate and had a nice vibe. The interior was well laid out and cleverly decorated. I was quickly greeted. I opted for the traditional Greek/Turkish coffee that I loved so much while visiting Greece and the koulouri. The koulouri was new to me. To explain it would be shaped like a very large, but thin bagel with sesame seeds. I was pleasantly surprised that it was not as dense as a bagel but was fresh, chewy and delicious. As I sat gnashing on the koulouri and waiting my coffee, one of the folks came over and gave me a small container of Greek honey and suggested I dip the koulouri in the honey as a special treat. That put it over the top, delicious. The breads looked amazing as did all the pastries. I did order two pastries to take home with me. I did snag a quick bite of each before leaving and they were phenomenal. My wife lives almond croissants, so I selected one of those to take home. As I said, I snuck a taste and it was one of the best almond croissants that I've ever had. Fresh, flaky and delicious. The second pastry was apricot, it was very good as well. As I sat enjoying my coffee and breakfast I took on the sights of all the passing food, it looked very good. The place was bustling with couples having breakfast, families grabbing a bite and food simply enjoying coffee while working on laptops. It was bright and inviting inside.
