We walked to Anise Pho from our AirBNB in downtown Raleigh on a cold night. I'm glad we walked, because finding parking would have been tough- and probably would've resulted in us walking just as far. I like Vietnamese food, but the options are limited where I live- and the options for vegetarians are even MORE limited at most Vietnamese spots. This spot is different- they have a whole page of vegan options on the back of the menu. My vegan pho with tofu was wonderful, and I loved the kick from the chili oil. I also liked adding the pho toppings, and they brought us extra bean sprouts since my husband and I both love them. I didn't have anything to drink, but all of the drinks were super reasonably priced. My husband had a beer. The bar has everything you could want to drink as well as mocktails. The portions are large, and when we got to-go containers, the employees even brought us plastic bags to pack each container in, so nothing leaked on our walk home. That was a nice touch and well appreciated. My husband got a bahn mi for later, and it was also packaged well for a to-go item. Anise is a great choice for pho or other Vietnamese foods in Raleigh, and if I lived nearby, I'd be a regular here and try everything on the vegan menu. read more

Kinda late review, but this was my first time trying Vietnamese food, and we enjoyed almost everything. I've had better peanut sauce, but the spring rolls were great. We've walked by Anise Pho multiple times and always noticed a good crowd inside, so on a chilly spring night we decided to stop in for dinner. We ordered spring rolls and two bowls of pho. This place was pretty delicious for its food, but the service was definitely lacking. It's a small venue, and the staff can see everyone from the center of the room. Even so, they forgot to make my smoothie despite reminding them multiple times that I had ordered it. They apologized and offered a free refill. Also, I noticed a strand of hair in my food. I ordered takeout. This place is in a pretty hip area where you have to look around for parking, but it is nicer inside than I thought, and had seating outdoors as well. I don't recall ever having found a good spot for Vietnamese in the area; what drew me here is the option to order explicitly labeled vegan dishes. Online ordering gives a fair level of detail on this. I ate most of it later, but it was fresh and ready quickly as is typical for the cuisine. Their lemongrass tofu was on the salty side, but let no one say that lemongrass is anything other than a mouthwatering plant when cooked right. Oh my gosh where to start. We were visiting NC for the birth of our granddaughter on 1/13/2025. This was the day before at the downtown location. We were greeted promptly and shown to our table. We ordered the potstickers to begin which arrived promptly and were so delicious. We each ordered. I had a bahn mi (chicken), daughter pork bahn mi, her husband had the Pho special combo beef and my husband had the bun salad noodle bowl. The broth had no depth, the pickled veggies in the bánh mì were flavorless, and the only thing with any real taste was the chipotle mayo--too bad the fries it came with were soggy and limp (except for a few burnt ones). What happened? This place was always great! I've been coming here for years. Now they put the condiment packs and garnishes in with the meat and noodles. I don't want nasty sauce packets touching my food. Barely any noodles and they removed the bone from the beef short rib. The whole point of the rib is to have a bone to gnaw on. The food is always, always good. However we have seen a blow to the cleanliness.. we have been coming to this particular spot for around 2 years now. We frequent all the shops in raleigh to see who is the best and one in Morrisville. We have been to Oxtail Pho, Saigon Pho, Pho Far East, Pho Express (Durham), Midtown Pho, Taste of Vietnam (Morrisville), Uptown Pho and this one had the best flavor. But where it begin to stick out in flavor it took a hit to cleanliness and quality. The bathrooms are atrocious. The area beside the bathroom that leads to the kitchen looks disgusting, there are consistently gnats and flies flying around so you can't too much enjoy your food without the fear of something landing for too long, and for the most disgusting thing yet, I have attempted to stir my noodles around in my broth, to find an onion almost like it had been used in another bowl of pho. The onion was slimy and already had meat residue on it. A weird and distinct contrast to the clearly fresh and white onions on top. Also, the SANITATION RATING is telling. We have seen it go from a 95 to a 90. A NINETY!!!!!! It's so disgusting, disturbing and disappointing because who is going to hold them accountable for the continued downtrend of cleanliness. Food service is quite fast and the food very fresh; the bread of my banh mi was crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. I had the BBQ pork, which was sweet and flavorful without being overpowering. Our helpful waitress offered suggestions and answered all of our questions. My friend enjoyed lemongrass noodles with an iced coffee which she said was amazing. The noodles come with a side of chili oil (which adds great flavor).
