After being very busy himself, the owner took the time to not only get me exactly what I needed to fix my problem but also took the time to explain why I may have had the issue to begin with and how I could prevent finding myself in the same situation later on. I only noticed this shop opening up over the summer and hadn't dropped by until recently. I wish I had sooner because because the other local bike store wasn't much help to me, not nearly as much as Angle Lake Cyclery was for me today. I could tell he wasn't out to make as many dollars off me as possible but rather make a new customer eager to return the next time good help is needed. Initially came in for a tube after calling, ended up returning for a tire. Probably returning tomorrow for the same 2 things just because the bike I'm working on had the tires stabbed and incorrect tubes were installed by the previous owner and only realized once they became problems. I'm very happy I don't have to return to Aaron's Bicycle Repair because each visit there I'm made to feel stupid for the questions I have or for whatever it is I'm working on. I have been to Angle Lake Cyclery two times in the last 10 years. Both experiences were good, but the shop has changed drastically since the last time I was there a couple years ago. Yesterday, I went in to buy a common-sized tube for my electric bike. When I arrived at the shop, it looked like it had been hit by a tornado: bike parts and tools were scattered everywhere around the shop. You couldn't walk more than two feet in any direction. I was shocked. It looked more like a backyard mechanic's garage than an actual bike store. I was so creeped out by it that my first instinct was to turn around and walk right out again, but then I thought, No. All I need is a tube. I'll be in and out of here in a jiffy. Wrong. After getting my tube specs, the shop owner went looking in the back for it. He emerged several minutes later with a tube in hand, but after doing a measurement, he discovered that it wasn't the right size. He told me he had the right size on order and it would be in the shop the next day for sure. The next day at five o' clock and... still no tube. When I called, the owner gave said he couldn't understand why his jobber still hadn't delivered the tube, but by that point I was done. I told him I'd go elsewhere, and I will, never to return. I was willing to ignore the incredible mess, but I'll be damned if I put up with the mess AND wait days to get a basic bike tube. Once a good store, there is something seriously wrong with Angle Lake Cyclery now. I don't see how they can hang on. read more

Cool local shop with a lifetime of expertise, good amount of cycling accessories, and used bikes from $300. They also carry long-distance quadrapeds and some fun cruisers as well as nicer Trek road bikes. Dale is always around and very knowledgable. He is willing to help, but doesnt hover. You do have to wade through piles of boxes and sort through bikes when looking, but if I owned a bike shop mine would look the same way. In exchange for the clutter ("chaos"), you get friendly service and awesome deals. This weekend I picked up a Kinetic Road Machine Trainer for $279! Thats $80 less than anything in Seattle or even online. When needing repairs/service or looking for a gadget, this is a great place to shop. read more

Due to the recommendation from discount medical equipment just up the street LA Pacific highway South in SeaTac Dale took care of me immediately and charged me $25 to replace one of the cables and adjust the other. Yes his shop is a collection of bicycles and parts... I didn't need to go into the shop. even though my concern wasn't bicycle-related, I heartily recommend him. read more

Great fast service on our two electric bikes (Rad). Rad was 5 weeks out on service but Dale fit us right in for a flat tire fix and a brake adjustment. This bike shop is an AWESOME mess!! Seriously, I know the place looks like somebody ransacked the place. Hell, I thought that, at any time, the police were going to arrive and take a report on the obvious burglary that had taken place the night before.... NAY NAY! That is just how this place is. Why the 5 Star rating then? I'll tell you. When I go into any place of business I want to feel that I mean SOMETHING to these people. Even if I am just another customer that may or may not spend money there. In fact, I never have spent money there, here is why. I stopped in after hearing they have some consignment bikes & I found one that I was REALLY hoping would fit my girlfriend. This thing was a beautiful old Bianchi that looked as though it was purchased in '83, stored in the perfect environment & then placed on their shelf for me to admire. I went home and secretly measured my girlfriends bike to see if perhaps this one may fit for her, then went back and spoke with Manny. Manny talked me OUT of the bike. Said (accurately) that it wouldn't fit her and he would rather not sell it to me. DUDE!!! How can you NOT respect that kind of honesty. Granted, he tried to sell me (almost successfully) on a different bike for myself. Truth is, I have more bikes then the girlfriend so it's only fair she gets the next one.... I was just looking at the bike shops in the are here on yelp and I've been in all of them. I found this one had a lower rating then Performance and that just about floored me. This place (ok, it's messy, REALLY messy), is far more concerned with getting you what you need then their own bottom line. Also, Angle Lake employs people that really know cycling.... First of all why should a bike shop be so clean and well-organized. A bike shop is like a auto body shop not a luxury clothing boutique or a hair salon. Of course every person appreciates a well-organized shop, but what really matters is having helpful and friendly staff not a clean place to roam around without the right people to help. I have seen so many great-looking shops and businesses with bossy people running them.These guys are absolutely customer-centric and helpful. Even if you don 't want to buy a bike/trike just pay them a visit and you will see that they will try their best to facilitate any needs and answer any question you might have. Dale, the owner is one of the nicest guys I have ever met in my life. A down to earth, caring and very bike-savvy gentelman. He is so patient and does not rush or force you to a purchase that you might regret in the future. He lets everyone to try as many products as possible, and answers all of your questions comprehensively. I wish we had more people like him in this world. I talked to him many times on the phone before visiting his shop and he was always so responsive and attentive. First off : Be prepared. Inside, it literally is the bicycle equivalent of a car junkyard. There's parts, pieces and even whole bikes piled waist high in areas. There's barely a path through all the bricabrac. But, if you know what you're there for and if you don't mind sifting through the rubble ( to me it's fun!), you'll find it. And if you can't, Dale the proprietor will gladly help. It's a different way to shop but if Angle Lake doesn't have it, chances are no one does. read more

OMFG! I wanted to buy a bicycle and wanted to find a local shop to help me figure out what would be the best bike for me. I pulled up and walked into the store and it was nothing but piles and piles of bike parts, partially made bikes, bike frames and just utter crap everywhere. I asked a guy that looked like he worked there if they were open ( I thought they might be shutting down) and he said, "I'm a customer; the owner is in the back. This place always looks like this...I think it's pretty cool." Nope. I didn't think it was cool at all. It was like going to a used or new car dealer and having to wade through burned out husks of cars, tires, rims and used car parts trying to find a car that you like. I walked over to the bikes that were hanging from the wall, but I couldn't get more than 10-20ft away from them because there was so much crap in front of them (I guess it prevents theft...as if the owner would even know if something was missing). I finally just left. I'll read the reviews on Amazon, buy from there, and hope what I get works for me. read more

Yes, Angle Lake Cyclery IS a mess, but Dale is one of the most knowledgeable bike gurus in America. If you have ANY interest in recumbents, this is THE bike shop to visit. Since I'm now semi-retired I plan to begin helping him clean & straighten-up the chaos starting late November 2014. I gave him two stars to give him the benefit of the doubt bc I went to see if I could get help with getting a new bike rack installed on my car and when I got there several people were standing outside the door - so I went up to go inside and could not even get in! The store looks like a bomb went off in it! There were parts and pieces of bike lying all over the floor; no rhyme or reason. I just turned and left. If you drive by and look in, you can even see from the windows - a total disaster! I asked one of the guys who was waiting for help outside what happened and he told me the (owner?) told him he was remodeling. That was NOT a remodel. I may go back in a month or so and see if he has finished his "remodel" but it looks like it would take longer than that to clean up what I saw! read more

We went with this bike shop to pack and ship two roadbikes after the Seattle to Portland race. The shop promised a one week turnaround time. Our bikes stayed in his shop for five weeks without him doing anything. He lied multiple times, claiming he had packed them, and promised four times to call with tracking information. He never called, and his voicemail box is constantly full. Finally, one of us was visiting the area and had to physically go to his shop, take the bikes back (he lied again, saying they were packed, and then went to the back to quickly pack them, but we discovered the ruse), and ship them a different way. Dishonest and very unreliable. I would never do business with this shop again. read more

I went to this shop after searching for Catrike dealers and found only one in seattle. Upon ariving I couldn't even walk through the entire store because of all the bikes on the floor. I test rode several bikes, one of which I liked. I told the owner to adjust the bike for me and I would pick it up in a week. I came back and got the bike and assumed it was all adjusted. I took it home and the chain was about a foot to long. In addition the shifters didn't work. I took the bike back the next business day assuming he'd fix it. When I got the shop was closed. After reading other reviews on yelp I decided I didn't want to wait around for the bike to be fixed. I returned the bike a few days later. The owner didn't even seem surprised that I wanted to return it. About the only good thing I can say is that he let me return it without issue. Stay away from this shop. read more

I took my new bike in for a tune-up when I noticed that the gears weren't working well on the first ride. When I didn't get the promised call-back on the day it was supposed to be ready, I called and was told it would take a couple more days. I don't mind the wait if the results are good. On the first ride after getting the bike home, only 5th gear worked reliably. By the second ride, even that wasn't working (it took 2.5 miles for 5th gear to finally kick in). All future rides were spent with the bike jumping between 2nd and 4th gear at the worst possible moments. (Hey! Is that a car? SURPRISE!4th gear!) As if that wasn't enough, the handlebars started rolling down under light pressure by the third ride. I suspect that nothing was done to the bike while it was in the shop. At least I hope that's the story because I would hate to think someone actually went to the effort to make something work this poorly. read more

UPDATE, the bike shop is still a hoarding disorder of bike parts, but that still doesn't hinder me from going. I had the owner install a basket on my bike, and had discovered later that he put the fittings on wrong, making the basket slide too much. I went off to school the next day with my basket installed, and hte whole thing came crashing down on me. so I later fixed the whole ordeal myself. Later upon hitting a rut in the road, one of my fenders that he installed came loose as the fitting to hold it in disappeared...he used no thread locker on the fitting so that was a bust. My rating remains the same, as his shops a bit of a mess, and he still has no proof of purchasing system in place, and ive had to fix some of the ruts in his work. read more

This is a very sad place of ownership, I took my son's bike to repair a rear wheel hub that was coming off and the owner Dale said he would have it done by the next day. I left messages with no return calls and drove over to the store to see what was transpiring. No one there, I've visited his store a few years back and looked organized. But I observed the inside of the store looking like most of the crawlspaces I do with pest intrusion all over it, boxes, cardboard strewn all over the place, I'll send a photo later, but very unorganized ownership. Sad thing is, when I went to see about why this is taking to long, Dale mentioned he would have it ready in a couple of hours. Initially he mentioned about $15-$25 for the repair. I go back to pick up my son's bike, and he told me he replace the old wheel with a new wheel and tire. TOTALLY B.S., I'm in a hurry and find out the wheel is old not new as he told me. Learned not to do business with this Des Moines business anymore. Next time I'll do the repair myself or with an honest bicycle company. Clean UP Dale. read more

I love this shop. It's like no other. The owner ( Dale ) is very experienced at what he does. The shop is like nothing you've ever seen before . It's a pleasure to visit, and obvious that Dale loves his craft . It's well worth a visit. Hopefully when you do, you'll be able to find a path amongst the chaos . About two months ago I ran into a deal on a "new", unridden, 2008 (sat on a shelf 8 years in a small town) Velotechnik Scorpion FX. I couldn't pass it up. I was having trouble getting adjusted to the trike; I had never ridden one any distance outside of a few test rides on various brands the year before. I needed some advice and stopped at bike shops whenever I found one in a town we happened to be driving through on our way back from vacation. While traveling the freeway, I looked on Yelp and read the reviews. I called and Dale not expecting much. He politely listened to my problem and concerns and told me if I was able to arrive an hour before the store opened at 10 and he would "get it taken care of." I arrived home and waited two days before calling back. I told Dale I would (drive two hours) meet him. He arrived before nine, fit me to the bike, and fixed the bike to solve my issues; in effect allowing me to keep the bike and ride! Folks, when he was working on my bike, he was in the parking lot, on his back, getting dirty, getting up, running into and out of the store, giving me directions, then into and back out with some tool or item to fit the bike to me and having me go through some riding paces. When he was done he looked at his watch and said, "Not bad, half an hour." I went to pay him and he refused. He politely but firmly gave me instructions on re-training my body muscles to ride a recumbent. (I'm 63, and a distance runner so I thought this would be an easy go. I was wrong). I then inquired about buying a set up to attach my iPhone to the frame. After all the man needs to make a living, right? Dale went into the back and gave me two new adjustable "clamps," showed be their attributes and again refused payment. Remember, I never bought this bike from his shop! It has been a month since I left Angle Cyclery. Dale was, as the English say, spot on in his work and advise. Folks, I may be the exception, so don't go to Angle Cyclery looking for anything free. Go for the advice, good workmanship, top of the line recumbents. I did check out his inventory. Remember the movie, "The Never Ending Story?" The book shop? If Dale did books no one would complain. But he doesn't, he does bikes. His shop is cluttered. It is in it's own world. Old book stores, old surf shops, old bike shops; they all have characters and clutter. You can add Angle Cyclery to this list. Check them out before the chain stores destroy the life. Oh yeah, as I mentioned above, Dale sells some great recumbent bikes, too. Check them out. read more

I had a particularly unique experience with Dale and his shop. On my own, I purchased a used recumbent that unfortunately arrived in many pieces and since I'm a stroke survivor, there was no way I was going to be able to assemble it on my own. I brought it into Dale and while it took a very long time to complete, he did a solid job on it. Then, over months I had nothing but trouble with this particular recumbent, so desperate to get riding again, I brought it back to him to make some fairly major repairs. This time around, Dale must've had my trike over six months! While I was running out of patience, he called me up one day wishing to make it right with me, presented me with a proposal that was over and above any customer service I have ever experienced. I won't go into detail, but let's just say it more than covered any time I was without a trike to ride! I do very much agree with other reviewers that his shop is a fantastic bordering on dangerous mess. But if you can look past that, Dale is a great guy that really bends over backwards for his customers. My experience took me from giving him a one star(if he was lucky) all the way to certainly four or five stars-I only take away one star as his shop and communication was lacking, but in the and he certainly came through! read more

Over two months I have emailed and called Angle Lake Cyclery to ask about replacing a lost seat bag for my CounterPoint Presto recumbent bicycle which I had purchased from Angle Lake Cyclery in 1993. I spoke directly with Dale. So he knows of my request. When I called him I got short shirift because something else was occupying his attention. I waited 3 weeks for his reply. None was received. How long is the cycling community going to tolerate this level of indifference to customer service. What can I say about Dale and his one of a kind world of bikes. First impression is a typhoon just hit. Beyond the clutter you find a good assortment of traditional bikes as well as an exceptional collection of recombant trikes. He is a Godsend to disabled veterans and disabled in general who cannot ride a standard bike but still want to cycle. Dale's heart is bigger than life. He knows bikes like no other and will do all in his power to help you find the right cycle or fix the one you have. I have a paralyzed leg. He assessed my needs and sent me home with a trial trike for a weekend. I ended up with one of the coolest high tech German models that I am ecstatic about. Several small adjustments wet required over time each were made quickly. His assistant Manny is remarkable as well.
