Located in downtown San Jose, we came here for lunch during Fanime. It wasn't super busy when we went and there were a couple other customers there with us too. Looks fancy inside and unlike the other more smaller, aged mom and pop Cambodian restaurants I've been too, but makes sense if they want to appeal to the people who work and frequent Downtown San Jose. Despite this, it's a place to get some traditional Khmer food and they're known for their award wining lemongrass paste. For our meal, we got the: 1) Somlaw Machu Kroeung: -This is a soup made with lots of veggies. The base is Prahok (pungent salted fermented fish paste), lemon grass and coconut cream with tamarind. It's served with a side of rice. -The flavor profile of this soup is naturally salty and sour, 2 things, I'm not that big of a fan of. I'm sure the soup tastes fine and perfect for people who love the flavor, BUT, it wasn't my thing and after a couple tries, I was done with it. 2) Loat Cha: -This is a popular Cambodian street food dish. It's pearl noodles pan fried with eggs, bean sprout and green onion and served with a side of chrouk metae (Cambodian chili oil paste - sort of like Sambal, but with more focus on the chili aspect). -The pearl noodles were unique and I liked the texture of it. -I didn't order this dish, since, despite being SE Asian, I DESPISE bean sprouts, so I was eating around as much of it as I could and it ended up with me just picking at the dish where my boyfriend mostly ate it. Our friend, who has pickier tastes, couldn't really eat beyond sampling what we ordered, got a stir fried rice dish and at the end of the meal said he didn't really like any of the dishes we had that day. Oops. I'm sure food is fine, the flavor is all there, but everything we ordered was a miss.

A great addition to downtown SJ. Food is always good and made with care. Owners are nice and came out from the back to talk to us. Would recommend to all.

We came on a Saturday looking for a different cuisine and were pleasantly surprised that there were lunch specials (30% off)! Having traveled abroad, this establishment was a complete disappointment. The dishes were just salt upon salt upon even more salt. All you tasted was salt. The eggs in the noodle were MASSIVE to the point I shrieked when I thought it was chicken (I do not consume poultry). On top of that, service was a major let down. Service-wise (via a male), he took his sweet time. However, food-wise (via a female), she was attentive, caring and thoughtful. We were in a hurry and food came out quickly (whereas the table next to us complained of the sluggish food prep). Additionally, if we needed something, the female handed it to us fairly quickly. However... regarding the male, you want to order? You have to walk to the counter. You need take out containers? You have to walk to the counter. You want to pay? You have to walk to the counter (this happened to the other table as well). Very modern decor. Casual dining (almost bordering on fine in comparison to the other establishments in the area). Due to how expensive each dish is, I wouldn't come here for parties or in a group setting. Located in downtown SJ (near SJSU), parking is complicated. During the weekend day hours (with no events), no parking garages were opened (at least when we went). There's street parking that's only free after 6pm on Saturdays and all day on Sundays. Will I come back? Heck no. Afterwards, I literally went to Subway and purchased a sandwich--now that's just sad. If you love salt and love walking, this place is for you.

Great service. Skewers were heaven. Reminds me of some of the families I grew up near that always had birthday parties with these skewers. The green curry was unique, but very tasty. The chicken dip (sorry don't know the name) but had this fermented sauce taste not for the unadventurous! I loved it :)

    Must try this dessert

There aren't many true Cambodian spots in the bay, especially between SF and SJ. Thankfully we have this gem. Authentic Khmer dishes nicely presented. Great service (thanks Kent!) The salaw machu kreung was great, amok was well done as well, the homemade sausages were fire. Love the twako guys! Save room for dessert. Nice modern decor and comfortable atmosphere. Parking garage right across the street or lot parking around the corner. Go visit now!

I'd walked by Angkor Chef a bunch of times and I'm so glad we finally made time before a show at the SJ Center for the Performing Arts. I actually left my credit card here after by accident after the meal but they messaged me in Open Table from my (completely unnecessary) reservation right after we left so I popped right back over. Special thanks for that too. The space was very sophisticated and clean but most importantly, the food was great. Our server was super nice and talked us through the menu, which was important because we didn't know what to expect given our unfamiliarity with Cambodian cuisine. We started with the Plear which was described on the menu as "Khmer Ceviche" (with salmon, red onion, garlic, string beans, red bell pepper and cilantro) and it was awesome. The dish was served with fried rice noodles shaped like diagonal cut slices of bread to scoop up the lovely bits. It really was like a ceviche - pleasantly sour but completely delicious. For entrees I had Angkor Noodles cooked in a chile paste sauce that was a little bit sweet and a little bit spicy. Really great. My wife was more adventurous and tried the Amok which was like nothing we'd ever had before. It was like a little catfish stew served with rice and was really interesting. Our server said it was one of their most popular dishes and I loved it but my wife was less jazzed, I think because it was so different from what we're used to. For dessert we had a Lotus Blossom Cookie called a Nom Pkah Chan, which is a sweet rice flour cookie that the restaurant served over Haagen Dazs vanilla ice cream. How could you go wrong with a cookie and vanilla ice cream. Awesome place with wonderful service. I can't wait to come back again soon.

Loved every dish here. Very gracious host. We had veggie and shrimp spring roll, rice crispies appetizer, Angkor noodles, green mango salad , lemon grass stir fry and Amok and each dish was excellent. Our friend got a complimentary birthday dessert-jackfruit rice which was also very good. I came back here after a year but food is still as delicious. Service was great. Food came out very quickly. The only other thing to mention are the prices-they have sadly gone up. Still highly recommend this place.

This place is like a hidden gem in Downtown SJ. They re-did the interior, feels elevated, clean, and has good central AC very cool inside even on a hot day. My bf noticed this place while passing by and we finally got to check it out. We got the spring rolls, Amok, and Papaya salad. Everything was very good and fresh. My bf described it as tasting healthy and not oily and heavy like some places. This Cambodian food tastes true to its origin yet elevated western. The papaya salad was refreshing with a kick of spice. Not overly fish sauced, not sure what sauce was used but it was good! The spring rolls was so well constructed the cross section looks like art. The sauce is not normal peanut sauce tho, tamarind sauce, so unexpected and unique. The Amok is their best seller and it is a Casserole steamed curry fish dish! Unique but so tasty and packed with fish, comes with nice sticky rice that isnt too sticky. I also enjoyed the sticky mango dessert! Mango was sweet and rice warm with sauce on top. Def recommend to check out on date night to impress with unique Cambodian food and elevated ambiance.

Food was tasty, the lemongrass stir really had a refreshing taste. The chicken was a little dry. Water filled once which wasn't great on a hot day.

Came here for a quick dinner as we wanted to try something new and it did not disappoint. Service was rather quick. It's modern style inside. And the seats that we had were nice and comfortable. I enjoyed the beef skewers and the amok. Highly recommend. The amok is like a soufflé with catfish that was perfectly cooked. The beef skewers were tender and easy to chew. Did not enjoy the crispy rice on the natang. It was too hard. However, the shrimp and chicken were good. The ginger chicken was just okay. I do like a good spicy heat to my food and all these dishes could have used some chili. Would definitely come back for the amok.

We came downtown for a Friday night dinner. After a bit of wandering we decided to visit Angkor chef. The interior is clean and modern and well designed. Service was friendly and prompt. The food was good and different. Dishes were smaller but that allowed for us (3) to sample quite a few dishes. The group favorite was the sausage trio and the Angkor slaw.

I can't believe i have not reviewed this place! What a nice ambiance to really delicious Khmer food! Excellent service, the chef came out to chat with us well. Love the innovative take on the rice and ice cream! Highly recommend!

Dessert called Nom Pkah Chan (Lotus Blossom Cookie) with vanilla ice cream.

I took my work team for holiday lunch at our favorite Cambodian restaurant in Downtown San Jose, Angkor Chef. Dishes are prepared with fresh ingredients by co-owner Chef Channy Chhi Laux. We each ordered a dish and shared with each other. We've had meals here before and have totally enjoyed what we ordered. This time around we had the Lok Lak (Steak and Salad), Angkor Noodles with shrimp, and Salmon with Mango Salad. We ended the meal with desserts that we shared: one called Nom Pkah Chan (a seasonal dessert, lotus blossom cookie with vanilla ice cream), and Jackfruit Rice, sticky rice made with mung bean topped with Jackfruit sitting in coconut sauce. The ambiance is warm with friendly service. Chef Channy's husband and co-owner Kent comes out to greet patrons to ask how their meal was. It's rare to find a Cambodian restaurant, and one that has vegan options. If you're ever in Downtown San Jose, check out Angkor Chef!

Mango with sweet sticky rice with roasted mung beans is delicious.

We did family style and ordered: - the famous papaya salad platter: comes with fried chicken wings, papaya salad, vermicelli noodles, boiled eggs and sausage. You can ask for spice preferences. Probably my favorite dish! Had multiple dishes to try. Added an extra wing (only comes with 2) - stuffed chicken wing: stuffed with lemongrass, ground pork and comes with white rice and papaya salad. First time eating a stuffed chicken wing and felt that the lemongrass really came through in the meat. - Khaw nee: a Lao stir fry noodle with sweet soy sauce toppings with eggs. First time having this noodle! I thought it was very flavorful and the eggs and noodles complimented each other very well. Hope to try their pad Thai another time. I think overall this meal was super flavorful and filling. We even had leftovers! For the price it was worth it. I don't think I've been to many Lao restaurants, so I am happy this one exists. I would come again and try other dishes :)

It's bright with simple decor. I feel like the menu has gotten much bigger including Laos/Cambodian dishes. There were a few parties having lunch already when we arrived. We were told to head to the table inside. No specific tables were mentioned so we sat anywhere that was inside. Menus were brought out right away and the staff stood nearby waiting for us to take our order and was was brought out immediately after we ordered. We ordered the following: 1. La Mein Xao Thap Cam (combination stiry fried noodles): Reminds me of Thai's drunken noodles without the sweetness. Very savory and seasoning was just right. Flavorful but not salty. The noodles were thicker than the usual chow fun. It was cooked perfectly and is chewey just the way I like it. There was not alot of noodles but with the amount of vegetables with shrimp and chicken that it worked out well as the dish filled me up. 2. Hu Tieu Dai, Kho (Combination noodles w/ transparent tapioca based noodles, dry (or you can request with soup): The bowl is big enough for hubby to mix his noodles. He says the noodles were cooked well, nice, firm, and chewey. The sauce is flavorful and not too salty. Hubby says the protein could be more. There were a few slices of pork, 2 shrimp, 1 small piece of squid, 1 thin slice of pork heart & 1 small piece of liver. This dish is accompanied with a vegetable plate and a bowl of soup on the side. The vegtable plate had a small portion of blanched bean sprouts and a couple pieces of cut up Chinese celery. For my husband who loves veggies in his food, that was not enough. He asked for more bean sprouts. Overall, we both enjoyed our meal. Service was not great nor bad. When we need extra bean sprouts my husband was able to locate a staff and got their attention. His request was met promptly. Aside from that, no staff came by to check in nor refill our water. We will definitely returned with our boys in the future to try other dishes. I definitely am interested in the Laos/Cambodian dishes that are on the menu.

I wasn't feeling well, so I decided to order 2 Hu Tieu to-go (no bones, which I know costs extra) and called it in ahead of time. Over the phone, I was told the total was $39, which already felt high at about $20 per bowl but I figured maybe there was a misunderstanding. When I got there, I was told the same total again, so I asked for clarification. The menu lists $15 for small and $16 for large, and I'm familiar with places automatically charging the large size for to-go orders, which is fine. But the math still isn't mathing! Even estimating generously: $17 per bowl comes out to $34, plus about 10% tax ($3) brings it to $37. There's also a clearly posted $0.35 to-go container fee, but that still doesn't justify the $39 total. It may only be a small difference, but the lack of transparency didn't sit right with me. Unfortunately, experiences like this make it hard for me to want to return, even for a place I used to enjoy. I won't be coming back.
