He provided amazing service and offered us "all-you-can-drink water," which was one of his running jokes. He is also very funny. ​Here is a breakdown of what we ordered: -​Amok: If you are not familiar with this dish, it is a steamed fish curry with a mousse-like consistency. -​Beef Kabob Skewers: These were charred perfectly and had chunks of fat that added a burst of flavor in every bite. -​Yellow Curry with Chicken: The portion for this is very generous, so make sure to order a side of rice to go along with this dish. -​Stir-Fried Eggplant with Tofu: The waiter recommended we order this with tofu, and it was amazing. The tofu absorbed a lot of the flavors of the dish and paired very well with the eggplant. -​Stir-Fried Rice Noodles with Shrimp: This noodle dish was savory, sweet, and tangy which I believe is from tamarind. ​Everything was delicious and packed with flavor. I cannot recommend Chez Sovan enough. I was introduced by a friend who grew up coming to this restaurant and have been obsessed ever since. Their food is immaculate in every sense of the word, I would truly recommend coming hungry and ordering a variety because every dish is crafted to perfection. My personal favorites are their FAMOUS amok fish dish, the beef skewers, and the curry. If you have more room the ginger fish and the chicken skewers are also great picks as well. They have their own small parking lot right across the street, when you walk in you'll notice it's a simple/no frills restaurant. The best type of restaurant to be honest. Beef skewerz finally back on the menu! They had to cut back the menu over Covid, so hopefully they are doing better now. My gotos are the skewerz (tender, slightly sweet, smoky char), amok (soft steamed fish cake) and ginger fish (sweet sauce with ginger notes, crispy fish with ground meat). All excellent and flavorful. Freshly cooked (you can hear the sound of cooking in a wok and smell the delicious BBQ) and I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. I grew up in this area 50+ years ago. There used to be a coffee shop back in the day. This place is a 100% improvement. I tried the Amok. I was not ready for the texture and taste. The fish is in a light mousse that soaks up the sauce and leaves a nice mouth feel. I added a little bit of chili and that just took the dish over the edge. It comes with rice that makes a great bite. I don't know if I will try the other dishes because the Amok blew my mind read more

It was like visiting a favorite cousins home. We were greeted and told to grab any table. Although I don't know my cousins name, all the other yelpers seem to call him Brian so I'll join in. Brian is a laid-back, easy-going guy with a big heart and a crazy sense of humor. He gave us set-ups, menus and plastic tumblers of his FREE WATER! ALL WE COULD DRINK AT NO CHARGE! I don't understand how anyone can possibly be so generous! The menu is a little smaller than past visits. I saw on one review that it was due to COVID. It make sense because that allows Brian to focus on fewer dishes and potentially cuts his labor and supply costs. Not to worry, we still got enough to eat. We ordered: Cabbage Salad with Prawns - 5 - A deliciously dressed salad served cold with some prawns. Curry Chicken - 5 - Very simple Chicken, Carrot, Potato Curry with Coconut Milk. A balanced heat and sweet sauce that was perfect for the rice to soak up. Ginger Fish - 4 - The fish was good but after the Amok, less than spectacular. So much so that I even forgot to take a picture of it when it came out. Amok - 5 - So long as I get Amok and Curry, I'm a happy diner. Those are my two must have dishes and he does occasionally run out of Amok. Brian's a cool guy. The restaurant has been around since 1987. If you want to eat here, I highly recommend you arrive before 11:45 to beat any lunch rush. You don't have to worry about dinner because Chez Sovan is only open from about 11:00 to about 1:00, maybe 1:30. And that's only Monday through Friday. I popped in to Chez Sovan to have some curry. I ordered the tofu curry. My friend had the chicken curry. Hers was way better. Everything about the tofu curry was excellent, except the texture of the tofu was a little too firm i thought. I'll give it a 4 out of 5. The chicken curry, on the other hand, deserves a 5 out of 5. The texture of the chicken was perfect. What else was great about Chez Sovan? The unpretentious vibes and the friendly owner, who kept our water glasses full during this heatwave. There were only two staff members running the lunch hours. Ambiance is quite deceiving from the outside but when you go in there's plenty of spacious and plenty of seating. Ive been a frequent customer over the years and while the food is still good I feel the value has gone down. I get it times are tougher. Food prices are higher thus prices are higher. The only thing that bothers me is that when the prices increase but the portions are reduced. I always order the crispy fish dish and for paying nearly $20 the portion you get is only enough for 1 person (Its not even 1 filet side of a fish you get). Mind you the fish is not the greatest of quality. It's just a fried swai/basa filet which you can buy a bag a a local market for 12-15 bucks and it has 4-5 double filets. read more
