I'm usually nearby on Saturdays and always looking for a good place to eat at. I actually found this place via Youtube first and when I saw how close it was to my doctor's office, I thought I would try the intriguing menu. We ordered the banh mi, the curry noodle soup, the socola cookie and a vietnamese coffee to go. The coffee hit the spot for me, the perfect strength and sweetness. I feel like it's harder to find this good of balance these days. As I'm not a big fan of fudge type cookies, I didn't like the socola so much, but my partner did. The curry noodle soup was tasty, reminded me of a Cambodian or Burmese style coconut curry soup, and the chicken was very tender. The banh mi for me, while I understood what they were going for, did not hit for me as much. There was shredded chicken mixed with pickled peppers and I believe shallots. The bread was nice and toasty and crunchy, but the filling felt a little dry. Overall, the dishes were on the pricier side, but you could tell the ingredients were fresh and also how much love and care went into the dishes. On top of that, I appreciated that most of the containers they used were compostable. The owners were really nice and extremely friendly, and besides the road side seating, there were also a few concrete benches nearby as well. With the cool weather, it would have been a perfect day to eat outside and enjoy some sunshine.

this is literally a hole in the wall! okay technically food truck, but love the mini stools -- just like Vietnam :) food was really good and I'm Vietnamese~ menu is limited because they really focus on the best dishes, also the menu changes / seasonal items. banh mi was delicious and packed with lots of meat. their version of nuoc mam sauce is also amazing!! I drenched that everywhere lolol a plus is they have sugarcane juice!!! (aka nuoc mia) there was a unique version with peanuts and peanut foam -- I would do without the peanuts toppings though. Het Say means awesome! Experience (3.5/5 stars): *Food: the lap xuong xoi, cari ga hand pie, and pate chaud were my favorite! Sticky rice had a good texture. Both the hand pie and pate chaud were crispy and tasted yummy with the curry sauce on the side *Price: a little pricey, spent around ~$78 *Service: good, friendly Overall, I'd recommend checking this place out as it makes for a cute picnic date! (:

I was walking along the Alameda when I noticed a colorful sitting area just down Hanchett street. I wandered over to see what it was and discovered the Het Say cafe, serving Vietnamese specialties right next to the soon to be open Beautiful Way pocket park. I ordered the Vietnamese coffee which is a strong brew meant to be sipped slowly. It came with a tiny piece of chocolate to nibble on between sips I will be back soon to try the savory food dishes! Logistics: - a few outdoor tables for seating - currently open limited weekend hours, with potential for some weekday service once the park opens - accepts cash and card

Ordered online the com tam and banh mi. Arrived and they started prepping it (you check in and they prep your order so its hot off the get go), really friendly staff. The pop up is in a pretty nice spot with plenty of seating around and you could easily miss it if you weren't looking for it. The food was delicious and Id recommend others to try if they're feeling hungry for some viet food.

Food was soooo delicious. Rivals Gao Viet in terms of quality and presentation. Outdoor seating was also enjoyable. Such a joy to eat under the sun! Service was lovely! Thank you! Will be back!

After an eater list totally hosed us on a downtown dinner spot during this short visit, we were still allured by the photos of this place and made a point to come here for "breakfast" since it was the only time we'd be able to get it. Everything was delicious and I highly recommend the place. Cute little spot and I wish we had more people so we could have tried even more things. We got the banh mi, a delicious hand pie, and some sticky rice with chicken. Everyone was super nice and helpful walking us through the menu too.

This place deserves so much more. I have been wanting to try this place since I moved here from Santa Barbra. There menu is quite different from want you expect from a Vietnamese restaurant. They are definitely a gem and true to every bite. I loved the way they didn't do just a traditional banh mi but their own version like the dipped banh mi and bone broth. The bread really stood out for me. Crispy exterior and soft and chewy in the inside. It really compliments the broth for dipping. The sandwich itself was very good and very filling, great for sharing. They had an assortment of other dishes like the sweet sticky rice & wild mushrooms. Little pastries and house drinks as well. The service was really nice and came out in a beautiful tray which was perfect to take amazing pictures of their food. Really smart actually. Will definitely be coming back and highly recommend to friends and family.

    I'm obsessed with their cookies!

Everything I've ordered from Het Say has been amazing. Flavorful and more homecooked tasting which makes them a favorite for me for takeout. I find most places too salty, oily to revisit. Their cookies are out of this world. And along with Lion Dance Cafe, my two favorite discoveries during the pandemic. They have a food truck at the SJ Rose Garden, but it's better to pre-order for pick-up there because they do run out of things. They have a rotating menu of items so its fun to check out what they have each week. ---- Also going through the pandemic has made me more thoughtful about how I do and do not support the local food community. It's wonderful to support small, asian-owned resturants v. some big corporate chain because I do not want to live in a Bay Area where the only options are big corporate resturant chains making souless food. Het Say is absolutely run by two very thoughtful wonderful people cooking from the heart, and you can taste it in the food!

I don't normally review farmer market vendors but, this place gets one today. When I order a dish then immediately order the same dish for more that's something. The crab and chicken rolls were so flavorful and fresh. The lettuce to wrap the roll in was from other local growers and the pickled carrots and cabbage we perfectly crunchy. Great job guys! I've also tried their Bahn Mi at the farmers market at Valley Med in San Jose on Wednesdays. I'll give them 5 stars on their take on bahn mi. They are pretty innovative when it comes to food! Bravo

They are one of many makers in my weekly food shopping consolidator's website. Here is some background about their business (https://www.discoverpastel.com/blog/het-say-vietnamese-pop-up-san-jose-bay-area). I've studied their menu weekly on Pastel with mostly offerings of their sausages and sauces. Their cuisine is clearly rooted from the Mekong area of South Vietnam. One week, my friend asked me to order their oatmeal and dry mango cookies (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=9xeK6cB8jwuCS-hV6OuqPg&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) which she generously shared with me; their description for this is: Chunky style cookie of oatmeal, Xoài cát Hoà Lộc | Mekong Delta mango variety, and pistachio. It was certainly interesting and flavorful and actually ate more like a mini muffin for me, given its size and cakiness. Then just before or around Mother's Day, they offered a chicken porridge (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=yu1ZtnyYAeWjOjv3joyd4g&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) which I immediately ordered; here is their description: Mekong style chicken porridge/chao made with creamy 'Soc Trang' rice, deep chicken stock with a side of goi/cabbage slaw with hand shredded 'ga di bo' (free range walking chicken), 'rau ram' herbs, onion, and crispy chicken skins crackling. Eaten with a sauce of ginger 'nuoc mam cham' fish sauce dressing. Yes, that is a pretty long description of that it was. All I can say is "GET THIS" if they offer it again. This was the BEST bowl of chao, jook, porridge that I'd ever eaten and that's not an exaggeration. As I heated it on the stove and spooned the remaining contents from the bottom of the plastic container, I licked the spoon and was amazed by the flavor from that. Think having a refreshing taste of slow cooked chicken broth. This paired perfectly with the provided chicken salad with the hot and cold contrast. Literally licked that bowl clean. The only minor flub is that I don't remember seeing or getting the cracklings unless it was because the chicken skin changed form since I ate it about a week later I picked it up. After this experience, you can be sure that I will be checking their weekly menu for this or any similar menu offering that they may have. Thank you for this homey, tummy warming meal. By the way, I can't remember the last time I've been to San Jose... Hugh Jackman?!

It also comes with the whole rice paper wrap setup, where you can grab rice paper and efficiently dip it in water to soften it up. I love that the dipping sauce is in a giant bowl, composed of the classic fish sauce concoction with sugar and some garlic and optional chili. Between Saigon and Hanoi, I went on a full-blown bánh cuốn quest, trying different spots almost daily. Street stalls, little hole-in-the-wall shops, famous spots--you name it. At some point I stopped being a tourist and became a rice-roll inspector. So yeah... my standards are unfortunately very high now. The best bánh cuốn I had in Vietnam was paper thin and almost translucent, with this delicate chew that somehow breaks apart and melts in your mouth. That's the texture I'm chasing. Coming back here, the rice sheets were noticeably thicker and didn't have that same delicate texture. They also weren't as fresh and warm as I remembered, which makes a huge difference with bánh cuốn. This is one of those dishes that's at its best when the sheets are freshly steamed and hit your table warm. The meat filling was also underwhelming and not nearly as flavorful or savory as another bánh cuốn spot I've had in San Jose. With a dish this simple, there's nowhere to hide--the rice sheet, filling, freshness and nước mám chấm (fish sauce) all have to work together. It's certainly not bad, and I can understand why people enjoy it. But after eating my way through Saigon and Hanoi in pursuit of the perfect bánh cuốn, this one is kinda meh for me now. My old review gave this place 4 stars. Vietnam ruined me.

We've probably eaten here 50+ times with family and friends, and one thing I can say is that they are 100% consistent. We've never had a bad meal here. There's a great variety of Vietnamese dishes, so everyone can usually find something they like. The chả cá (fish) is one of their popular dishes and a favorite. They also have good chicken phở, broken rice, vermicelli noodles, spring rolls, roll-your-own options, and plenty of soups beyond phở. You can order individual dishes or share family-style, which makes it especially easy when coming with a group. It's very casual, family-friendly, quick, and straightforward--nothing fancy and probably not where I'd choose for a date night. But for a dependable meal with family or friends, it's a great spot. Kids like it, parents like it, and my mom likes it--which says a lot coming from an older Vietnamese person who knows her Vietnamese food! The staff is always efficient and nice, and after all these years, the food remains consistently good. The biggest downside is parking. The entire shopping center has become so busy with restaurants that finding a spot can be overwhelming, especially during peak hours. Also, keep in mind they do not take credit cards. The broth is very flavorful, the noodles are freshly cooked and soft, soaking up the flavors of the broth, and the meat is also very tender, soaking up additional flavor from the rest of the dish. Just a heads up, they only have soup available here - no spring rolls or other traditional dishes you might expect to find in a Vietnamese restaurant. The staff is quick to get your order in and your food brought out, but after that, you're on your own. When you're finished eating, you have to go up to the register at the end of your meal and let them know your table number to check out. Payment is cash only.

Unfortunately, the service was not very welcoming--the staff came across as blunt, impatient, and at times rude--but I could have overlooked that if the food had fully lived up to the hype. The broth made a good first impression and clearly included many of the right spices, although it was also quite salty. As I got further into the bowl, however, the flavor started to feel flat and lacked the rich, slow-simmered depth I expect from a restaurant that specializes in this dish. It tasted more heavily seasoned than deeply developed, so experienced bún bò Huế fans may find it underwhelming. The meat was also not as tender as I would have liked, and the congealed blood--usually my favorite part--was overcooked and dry rather than smooth and tender. The visible holes suggested it may have been cooked too quickly at too high a temperature. Overall, the meal was decent and had some good flavors, but the broth, meat, and service did not meet my expectations. I can understand why it is popular, but I would probably try another bún bò Huế spot next time.

The bahn cuon here is really good -- the rice noodle is so fresh and soft and chewy. This was my favorite and the variety was so appreciated as well! It's also surprisingly filling and I would definitely get this next time I'm here. The fish sauce was also delicious as well. (this is in reference to the dish Banh Cuon Tay Ho Dac Biet) Bahn Beo were good sizes and nicely steamed. I wish there was a bit more sauce because I was running out at the end. Toppings are appropriately sized as well Personal take, I didn't really enjoy the fried pork rind topping as much and would have liked more shrimp, but once again, personal preference. I didn't quite enjoy the Hu Tieu, but my friend liked the soup! It's a little too plain for me. I do love the feeling and texture of eating thick, round rice noodles. The banh xeo that came on the side was hard to crunch through, I felt like it was probably sitting on the side for a while. Vibes were nice -- there's a call button to ask for service. Menu has a lot of items as well (e.g. pho, rice plates, etc), so there's something for everyone if you come with a big group! Our server was also really attentive and sweet -- he came by and asked if we wanted additional dishes/bowls since we were sharing food!

I ordered their egg rolls and banh beo for catering which came with lots of fresh herbs/lettuce, fish sauce, and other toppings. Pricing was very affordable as well for the quality. I have also frequently gone into their store to enjoy a nice plate of com tam or bun thit nuong which has always been great. They provide their nuoc mam/fish sauce on the table and always are attentive. Restaurant is large and can accommodate a bunch of tables. Parking is also on a big plaza so didn't have trouble parking.

It's not outstanding, but it's definitely enjoyable. Unfortunately, the service ruined the experience. As soon as I sat down, I hadn't even had a chance to look through the whole menu before the server kept touching my shoulder and repeatedly pressured me to order. I found it very rude and uncomfortable because I really don't like strangers touching me. The older lady did it to everyone in our table, and she didn't seem to realize she was making our entire group uncomfortable, and it affected our whole dining experience. So, would I come back? Absolutely not. One visit was more than enough. I'm not willing to deal with that kind of pushy service again.
