This is my go to place for delicious grilled lemongrass chicken and rice porridge. I generally do take out. It's perfect when I want comfort food or even if I am recovering from a cold. If you ask, they will slice the grilled chicken for you. The rice porridge is flavorful and made with some chicken broth and they always serve aromatics (cilantro, a little thin sliced onions and green onions) on the side if you want. And there are so few pieces. Each dish was $22 before taxes and tip. So I spent over $50 for maybe 2 oz of chicken. That is insane. As for the food, the rice was unseasoned. The restaurant was clean, plenty of tables and seating inside, and two TVs at the corners, one playing a show (either on mute or really low volume), the other with changing images of nature and playing meditation music (or "healing melody" as noted on the screen), something like what you may hear at a spa or massage parlor... that was different (for a restaurant setting) but cool, as we shared conversation while enjoying our meals. We got the #3 (grilled lemongrass chicken with rice) and #11 (pho with chicken giblets). My bf especially liked the Hainan chicken pieces, and noted the tiny spicy jalapenos/ peppers that came on the side (I tried it, and it was super spicy!). I absolutely loved the grilled lemongrass chicken dish. The chicken didn't have a whole lot of seasoning but still had really good flavor, juicy and grilled perfectly with a nice char. It came with sauce/broth on the side, but didn't really need it, as it was good on its own. It was also a good-sized helping, two pieces of chicken, plenty of rice (I probably only finished half), and fresh pickled veggies that weren't too sour. The broth was light and aromatic and it created a warm and comforting feeling to offset the chicken that is served cold. The chicken (you can pick white or dark) to top your chicken rice and salad. The salad was refreshing, the vegetables and herbs was crisp, and I loved the ginger and scallion dipping concoction. I can eat that by itself over a bed of rice. Really liked the sauce that they give with it. Makes it extra flavorful. Hainan chicken was surprisingly tasty. The only thing is the amount of chicken you get is insanely small. As you can see from my photo, it literally looks like one chicken drumstick sliced onto the plate. So while the chicken had good flavor...there was barely any chicken on the plate. Had the Hainan Chicken with chicken sticky rice, then the Grilled Lemongrass Chicken with sticky rice the second time. Both are excellent and flavorful. The portions are just right, so you don't feel like you're slogging out of the restaurant. The meal is served with a tasty broth soup, and the sticky rice reminds me of younger days in southern Asia. I dined in but was told I needed to pay for my meal beforehand, so I did. As soon as I paid, the owner brought my food out, like it was being held hostage pending approval of my payment LOL. The two people who had already been there before I arrived didn't pay until their meal, like you normally do. One person was Asian and the other was white.
