A friend of mine who grew up coming here suggested we eat at this place and it just might be my new go-to for Vietnamese food in Downtown San Jose. I loved the banana flambé!! Fun dessert to try and share. Enjoyed that with my Viet iced coffee. They bring the Phin over for you to pour, which I loved since you don't find many spots locally that still do that these days. The quality of greens and produce is very fresh - I got a vermicelli beef bowl and we shared spring rolls for the table and everything was tasty, filling, and refreshing. Dac Phuc is the only Pho place for me and my wife! It is the only pho that is close to Mom home cook. Where else in the entire bay area that still cut the meats by hand? Their phở áp chảo, bánh cuốn, chả gio, bún chả, are among the best, bar none. Their cafe phin, and banana flambe to top it out. A hole-in-the-wall type of pho restaurant, this establishment has been in business for many, many years. Consequently, it has a less modern appearance compared to other restaurants, but the food has always been consistently good for me. The customer service at this place is very fast-paced. If you're expecting the typical American restaurant with excellent service, you might not always find it here. Some of the employees also speak broken English, which may give the impression of rudeness or harshness. However, they are actually really nice people. They just come in to work, cook the dishes, and bring it to the tables with their quickies ability to do so. If you're solely interested in the food, I wholeheartedly recommend this place! My go-to orders include the crab meat egg rolls, fried banana, grilled shrimp and meat with vermicelli noodles, spring rolls, fried pho noodle dish (pho so chau), Banh cuon, and the regular pho. As someone who is sensitive to MSG, I have never had a problem after eating the pho here and believe that the broth served in this restaurant is of high quality. My boyfriend loves the Vietnamese coffee here, and I personally enjoy ordering the freshly squeezed orange juice. Parking around the restaurant might be difficult, but they actually offer free parking in a gated lot if you ask the employees inside. read more

A tasty and well priced lunch option! My team came here for a recent lunch outing. We arrived at 11:50am and noticed the place filled up quick after 12! Expect busyness but there was plenty of seating. We ordered - egg rolls for the table ; good but not amazing - #3 veggie soup with tofu ; very good! Broth was light but flavorful , veggies were plenty, and tofu was perfect chewy texture - #1 beef noodle soup ; coworkers said it was good - #2 combo ; coworkers said it was good - Vietnamese iced coffee with milk ; perfect blend of strong and sweet. They even bring out the phin drip with your cup so you know the coffee is fresh. Tips: - ask for hot tea for table instead of water - the dark red spicy sauce on the table is VERY spicy (even with those of us with a high spice tolerance). As I drive into down town SJ, I see this pho place. I was intrigued by the name and graphic design of the building. As I ventured in, I was greeted and said that I could sit anywhere during a Friday lunch rush. I sat down was provided a menu and in a few minutes the hostess took my order. I ordered the combo pho large since I had to ask what the difference between a small and large were. My pho comes up. It smells good, first thing I do is taste the broth and it was good. Hint of Star aneis that was not too strong. I like it. There was a good amount of meat in the soup, but it was pretty simple with a combo (meat, some tripe, green onions, onions and noodles). I enjoyed the pho but here were my cons for my visit: 1). When you order pho, you get a dish of sprouts, jalapeños, basil etc. my sprouts were brown - they were old and I did not want to put it in my soup. Looked questionable. My basil was on the wilted side, wasn't fresh a and wasn't wilted. 2) silverware - the communal area on the table where they had silverware and plates: the mini plate was dirty so had to go down the line of plates to find a clean one, the pho soup spoon that I didn't check was dirty so had to get a new spoon where I then had to examine my chopsticks in case 3). When paying for my bill, I was ignored. Lots of folks working but I stood in the front for awhile till I was able to pay for the bill 4). Was a bit pricy for pho close. Had other pho spots that were cheaper and in the San Pedro area. I did enjoy the pho broth, I may come again. read more

Kudos to the restaurant for not only having authentic Sriracha in these rare availability times as well as their own house made sauce. Word of warning, that house spice is really spicy. By far the worst Vietnamese restaurant I've ever been to. Walked in and was hit instantly in the face with this "anti-fabreeze" smell. Which should have been a strong indicator after my experience with Buca at Oakridge... If the place smells bad, chances are, the food will be bad. Combination pho: the proper title should be "combination freezer burn". The tripes and tendon had this distinct moldy age-old freezer taste. The broth was tasteless and well, just sad. On the other hand, briskets were sliced thick and tender (but not enough to redeem the bowl of failure). I'd never return to this place. Look around, there are plenty of other Vietnamese restaurants down the other end of Santa Clara St. save yourself the pain and suffering. read more

My wife was having lunch with a colleague at one of the spiffy restaurants across the street so I elected to duck into this little hole in the wall Vietnamese joint. I knew I would be having Xiao Long Bao as dinner tonight so staying in an Asian theme seemed like a good idea. The place only had a couple of patrons when I arrived at noon and more filtered in as I ate. This place would be considered a dive, which can be good or bad. It was good. The staff seemed to be moving around in a manner that made no sense to me, but it worked. I was waited on promptly. There are a number of Asian condiments on the table including Siracha, fish sauce, Hoy Sin sauce, soy sauce and a mysterious red sauce. I put some of the red sauce in the small sauce bowls that are on all the tables and the waitress immediately came over and told me "It is too hot for you." I told her I eat Thai And Vietnamese so I doubt it. She said I'd be sorry. I tasted it and it was perfect. A nice heat that lingered and was not oppressive, to me. Your mileage may, and will, vary. I mixed a bit bit of the fish sauce, 'cause I like it, and some Hoy Sin into it to bring the umami up. My order of spicy beef with a deep fried spring roll arrived promptly. It was nicely arranged on the plate with rice, carved carrots and cucumber. One bite of the perfectly cooked spicy beef told me I had made the right decision to make up my own hot sauce. One bit of rice with the beef dipped in the sauce was delish. The vegies were fresh and a nice complement. I enjoyed my meal with time to spare to meet my wife. I felt the price was fair for the quantity and quality of food I received. Alas, they didn't have any fruit milkshakes that I wanted for dessert. I won't beat them up for that. My family and extended members have been going to this restaurant for over 20 years. Service is terrible, and the food is a hit or miss. My parents have a special preference to this restaurant and often order to-go, but their to-go orders often have mistakes or missing items. The staff is sloppy at best. Most recently, my family planned with the restaurant ahead of time to have 27 people dine at the restaurant. The place was ill prepared to handle that many people and the volume of orders simultaneously. They only had one server to manage the whole place so you can imagine how poor and dysfunctional the experience was for everyone. Beware of their dirty utensils which are always poorly cleaned. The restaurant has tendency to microwave all types of food before serving it to customers. They have a microwave next to the stairs that lead to the restrooms which they use to microwave raw meat such as beef steak that goes into pho. The staff handles this meat while microwaving it with their bare hands. To the owners and management: get your sh*t together. read more

Honest, very long term review for Yelp. I started eating at Dac Phuc in late 2003, and did so until 2013, when I moved away from the area. Understand, this is a Family operation, Mom and Dad 'generally run the front counter', daughter is : a-cooking b-serving c-ringing up d-waiting tables e-everything else. Service is generally chaotic as in all around, but superbly professional and very, very fast ! Chaotic simply means they do things their own way, but get it done they do! I'll confess I've eaten the entire menu several times over through the years. In my several hundreds of visits to Dac Phuc, everything has been top notch, every time. I've my constants, my seconds, and my 'out on a limb' selections. One of my favorite memories is that: If you show up a few times, don't be a pain in the ass, (they are a Busy restaurant), you'll be greeted by name and treated like family. For 10 years! The place is funny as they attempt to cater to everyone. More than a few times, my group of say 5 would show up and be seated at the 6 seat table in the front/middle. Without warning, Ms. Loi would walk up a lone diner, introduce them, and announce that they were sitting at our table! We loved it. Hell, we had a seat left, and there was a line out of the door. Came here on my lunch break and was horrified with both the customer service and the quality of the food. I used to work in a Vietnamese restaurant so I can give some slack but there is no excuse for this level of inadequacy. The customer service was awful! No one greets you at the door and the service staff snatch the menus from your hands when you finish ordering. When the food was delivered, it was quickly thrown on the table and the server rushed off. Not once was I given water to drink or asked if I needed anything else. After being ignored for 20 minutes after finishing my meal I had to walk up to the kitchen to pay and leave. I ordered a #11 Vermicelli Noodles, the meat used was ground beef and had no flavor at all. Had to add hoisin sauce and sriracha sauce for flavor. I had also ordered a fresh lemonade that was okay at best. The total came out to be $18.89, the AUDACITY to charge so much for food that is mediocre and bland.(ordered only 2 things) If you are looking for a good Vietnamese meal look elsewhere my friend unless you don't mind paying an arm and a leg for terrible and canned dog food. read more

Suffering from a sore throat, I wanted something soupy for lunch. I opted for the combo pho, which had brisket and tripe but no beef balls (bummer). The beef tendons were like rubber and inedible, I've tried chewing two of them which I ended up spitting out. I didn't even try for the rest, instead just fished them out and tossed it on my bean sprouts plate. What a great find in downtown San Jose. We were visiting the area and staying at a nearby hotel so we didn't have to worry about parking on our visit. The atmosphere is great once inside - they've gone with decor that makes it look like the exterior of a small shop indoors. The crowd on our early lunch visit on a weekday was a mix of solo diners, families, and groups of young adults. On this visit we ate with some Vietnamese folks so they took charge of ordering for the table. My husband enjoyed a classic pho - the broth was flavorful and the serving was giant. Restaurant Dac Phuc on Santa Clara Street, San Jose, has my favorite noodle soup with meatballs, which was excellent-not too salty, well prepared. The ice tea tasted fresh brewed and the restaurant was fairly busy with several Vietnamese patrons enjoying the food-which looked good. The service was practically non existent. The server was very polite, but seemed busy. I wanted some food suggestions, but was shown the menu. I had to ask for refills and even had to go to the counter to get my bill. The restaurant itself is in deplorable condition in need of a major remodel. The non ADA compliant restrooms were upstairs via an old rickety stairwell. In general, the restaurant was in need of a good deep cleaning. It looks to me it has been around for many years but has been severely neglected. I am going to remain neutral on my recommendations as obviously, some people like this place. read more
