I really had high hopes for this place since Reddit threads were circulating that this was the best com tam place in sj. Utensils were in a bucket at the table, make sure you wipe it down. I'm really not sure whether all the Com Tam Thanh are operated by the same owner but the food quality are vastly different. I do like this San Jose one however (don't go to the Newark one). They serve good Com Tam which is broken rice (think tiny rice) plate with shredded pork skin, egg cake, meat (beef or pork) and other stuff. They serve the rice plates with a fish sauce and I recommend you mix the rice with the fish sauce. Although I usually don't like fish sauce but it's great with the rice in this case. Both the pork chop and the beef short ribs are amazing even though I slightly prefer the pork chops. I just wish they give more egg cake as the piece I got is tiny. Also they only gives you two grilled shrimps. If you like com tam you know there is another popular place nearby but this one is better in one aspect: they don't close the restaurant in the afternoon as the other does. They've been open for decades! This parking lot is a lot easier to get in and park than the other plazas on Story Rd. Restaurant looks a little run down compared to all the new joints popping up but their food is good. Obviously known for their rice plates (it's the name of the restaurant in case you didn't know) but they seem to serve up other delicious dishes as well. Everything we had was solid. BBH, rice plates, vermicelli. The beef chop was actually short ribs, very tender and flavorful. Only negative things were the nem nuong rolls came with pickled vegetables inside, I've never had it with pickled vegetables. The food was decent--nothing that really stood out or gave us that "wow" factor, but it carried a sense of nostalgia that makes it special for my family and me. The location itself is a bit tricky since the parking area is small and not the easiest to navigate, though of course that's not the restaurant's fault. I am a fan. The buy 4 get 1 free banh mi deal is nice and that's what I would get here. Drinks: no options for sweetness, so it's full sugar and boba is okay. Flavors are nice but with the full sugar, it can be a little too much. Pork Vermicelli dish: comes with pickles, cilantro, rice vermicelli, a good amount of greens and marinated bbq pork. Spring rolls: the time I ordered them it was just okay. I like mine wrapped super tight, and these ones were not, and a little light on filling too. Banh mi: in store the bread was crispy and fresh, I felt like they had enough fillings and daikon/carrots along with the marinated pork was so yummy. When I came back and ordered the 4 for 5 deal, they even packaged my veggies separate so that it wouldn't get soggy and I could toast the bread at home. How nice!! They have many items not available on the typical broken rice restaurant. This one has been here many years. Owner on site. Home cooked broken rice Vietnamese food. Many variations. Haven't gone through them all. Would take months or years to get through the entire menu. Most customers here don't speak English. Solid catering and Togo business from the locals. Bahn cuon: steamed pork with rice sheets. Steamed pork like bologna without the food coloring. Braised fish in caramel sauce: on the weekend they sell pickled Thai eggplant. Usually you see pickled carrot and radish . This is different. Oddly the eggplant is crunchier than a cucumber. Surprising. You eat it with the braised fish. The braised fish is cooked on a very low steam simmer for 12hours! This makes the bones in the fish soft while still retaining the texture and shape of the fish. This technique enables you eat the small bones in the fish. Never seen this before. Delicious. Very time consuming and delicate procedure. No source of calcium in Asian diests and beef isn't popular so no milk or dairy products. This is an interesting g alternative to eating deep fried fish bones. Never seen this dish in the US. The braised fish is very different than the typical Vietnamese catfish. Not sweet. Zero sweet and no heavy soy sauce glaze. It looks to be simmered in a fish sauce and water only broth which is salty and spicy. Tastes like a beef broth to me but it isn't. Very light. It is cooked so you eat the small bones in the fish. Not meant to be eaten where you eat the meat and leave all the bones like a Chinese steamed fish. Very different interpretation. The braised fish and eggplant is 23$. Enough for 2-3 people. Very filling. Soups and rice plates. very large portions other reviews seem to cover this in detail. Over 50 different permutations on soup and broken rice plates. They story was in the old days they threw away the broken rice and once they discovered it was more tender than short grain rice the price is now more than no broken rice. One of my regular stops. First time dining in here and the food was pretty good. CASH ONLY, though. It's on the corner shop in a plaza with tight parking. The shop itself is pretty small so there wouldn't be room to fit a stroller comfortably unless you were at one of the corner tables, so mamas, be expected to bring a carseat in! My SO and I shared the #51, which had pork skin, steamed egg meatloaf, fried egg, pickled veggies, and grilled pork. The portion could be enough for 2 people if you both aren't so hungry, but one dish will fill you up. The dish comes with fish sauce and a bowl of soup on the side. However, I think you only get soup when you dine in. I ordered take out last time and it did not come with soup - a regular rice plate and a combination rice plate. The prices aren't that bad. Of course, the more items you have on your rice plate, the more it costs. Each broken rice plate can range from $10.50-$17. Pretty good, even years later. This place hasn't really been remodeled since it opened, but the food is very much the same quality. Even though the restaurant decor is outdated, it does provide some good food with old time charm and the prices (although have definitely increased over the years) is still probably the cheapest com tam (broken rice) places you can find in the South Bay Area. Service is nice enough, the waiters often customize my order for me and have no issues with extra things (I.e make my eggs slightly more cooked than standard). The best things to get here are probably their combination rice plate which comes with choice of meat (suggest the beef short rib or grilled pork) and a bunch of other various sides to go with it. Drizzle some fish sauce all over and you are good to go! Other things I love getting here are the pressure cooked fish (com ca Kho ngu) which is a dish that you can only get here (if anyone knows somewhere else to get this dish please let me know!) it comes with soup and veggies on the side, including a pressure cooked fish with a spicy fish sauce. Unfortunately the last time we came here, the fish was not heated long enough and came out cold in the middle but they were able to rectify this. read more

Came around 5:30pm on a Saturday. It was pretty empty. Got something to go here since Century Plaza was crowded because of the Lunar New Year celebrations. The Nem Nuong Cuon was standard. The meat, grilled pork, was okay. Good crunch from the egg roll wrapper. Good amount of veggies. Only complaint is that the the rice wrapper ripped because either the brand they use is too thin, or it was stuffed to the brim. Sauce was spicy for someone who can't handle spice. They put the hot sauce literally on top of the whole thing, so it was hard to avoid it. If you cannot handle spice, ask for the sauce without hot sauce. read more

We waiting patiently for our soup bowls to come out and they never did. My sister eventually flagged an employee and requested for some. Broth was probably the best thing that was served. BBQ'd meats looked good but were flavorless and unappetizing, egg cakes were bland, and the shrimp cakes were doable but very dense. We requested for some pickled leeks [which is a normal staple for these dishes] and the worker said they didn't have any. Wtf??! 1 star. Avoid this place at all costs. Their bun bo hue is 5 star! I'm writing this review a week later because I can't wait for my next craving for this beef/pork blood spicy noodle soup. One thing unique about this place is that they give you a bone in meat (not sure if it's pork), plentiful slices of beef briskets and tendons. The pork blood is an acquired taste that I recently started to like so I'm glad this was part of the meal. Some places don't give the pork blood, but without it I'm not feeling it as complete. The rice roll dish is also excellent. I think it's call banh can cuo. That's 4 star food with 5 star pricing! Good value and great appetizer or even a meal if you're not up for their rice plates. I think it goes well with soupy meals. I'm kinda just ok with this com tam. I think some days it's better than others. Their meats are tasty but the side stuff like egg cake or shrimp is just ok. As of July 10, 2024. I will get straight to the point. Came into the restaurant, the waitress seated me and my family and the tables were sticky. I mentioned it to one of my family members, they felt another table and it was also sticky, so I concluded the tables were all sticky so I could try to have a peace of mind. I ordered BunBoHue and ice tea. Mine arrived the fastest and the BunBoHue is yellow from a lot of oil. As you can see the image with the vegetables covering it, the oil still protrudes a lot. I'm telling my family member to try the broth with me and I said it tastes like BunBoHue prepackaged essence, with hot water. My family members said it reminds them of the instant spicy beef pho in a ramen pack with a lot of oil and hot water. They said I got unlucky because BunBoHue wasn't their signature or best dish at this place according to their friend. So I gave some grace, put my negative thoughts away and was grateful for a plate of food. I sit and waited for my family's meal to come out so we can eat together and they eventually got-their food. I put vegetables on my BunBoHue and I take a picture. As I got to mixing the vegetables into the broth there was an unpleasant smell coming from it. I should've mixed the noodles first then add the veggies so I can conclude that it was either adding the veggies that caused the smell or the smell was already in the food itself. There was definitely a smell, I've eaten BunBoHue for my whole life from, baby to adult, and this isn't what it should smell like. If I had to describe it, you smell bunbohue essence with something pungent. I keep mixing and I take first bite of noodles with meat and it's not sour, it's bland, I can feel the oil, no spice flavor, and I can smell the unpleasant scent. I take a sip of broth think nothing of it because I was hungry. I grabbed the pork hock, and my lips felt as though I had kissed a puppy, that hadn't been groomed for awhile. I looked, there was a lot of hair on the pork hocks and covered the whole entire fatty ring of it. I pick up a piece of tendon and inspect it very carefully and within seconds there's so much black hair in it. I checked all of it and every single piece of tendon had hair in it. I take a look at my broth closely and together there is hair in my soup. White and black hair strands floating in the soup. I stopped eating, I told my family members the reasons and they saw it with their own eyes. They were not happy about it this. I told them to finish your food and if you want to finish the food, then we'll approach this calmly. They grabbed my bowl and mixed it and smelled something not right with it. And concluded the meat wasn't cleaned properly causing the odor. We discussed and since this place is small business and not a big establishment, that they can offer a discount and we don't request a full refund. My family members decided not to finish the food, go to the counter and told the waitress the situation. There was only a waitress and chef/waitress working at the time. The waitress notified the chef about how the food and the meat was not cleaned correctly, there was hair everywhere from not being plucked thoroughly and the smell was not it should be. My family believed 100% the meat wasn't prepped and cleaned properly, which caused the odor. Then the waitress came over to take a look, she stated theres no refund or discount because that's the policy and she was very sorry about this. She looked at the plate, and understood and said sorry about what had happened. I told my family member let's leave, don't let it ruin the day. So when it came to the food, as you can see in the pictures it wasn't good. And I asked my family if they didn't finish their food due to my food being contaminated, they said did you not remember us trying our food when it came out and us mentioning it wasn't good from the very beginning. The server didn't came over to offer any drinks, or if we wanted anything else so it's really nothing special. The sticky tables didn't help so it caused an unpleasant atmosphere having contaminated food for me, food didn't taste good for my family, service was nothing special, tables were sticky and it was hot so the atmosphere wasn't great. This place went south over the years. I used to recommend this restaurant to anyone who asked me where a good Com Tam was in San Jose. I know Com Tam is a comfort meal for the larger Vietnamese community which is why Com Tam Thanh needs to step up their game if they want to remain a competitor. At our most recent visit, the overall experience really set the tone for me exiting them off of my recommendation list. In all honesty, the flavors and overall freshness just wasn't there anymore. The small bowl of soup that accompanied the rice dishes literally tasted like hot water with cilantro and black pepper thrown into it. The lettuce and tomato slices were soggy and discolored. Additionally, they no longer carry pickled garlic which I feel is a necessity to the concoction of Com Tam. The prices have gone up a bit also and cash is still the only form of accepted payment. For the most part, I can say I haven't really had bad Viet food ever. Com Tam Thanh falls into that category. We got the bun vit (duck and vermicelli in broth) and banh uot thit (thick rice noodles stuffed with pork and wood ear mushrooms) to share. Verdict? They were both delicious! Although the duck was on the leaner side, they gave us a good amount of pieces and served it over cabbage, onions, and fried shallots rather than straight in the bowl of soup, which was a nice touch. As for the banh uot, they could have spared to add a few more pieces to a $10 portion, but it was still very satisfying, considering we weren't all that hungry to start with. I've introduced my boyfriend to this place and he loves it too. He orders the same plate I get, the #43 every time. It's a broken rice plate with pork chop, egg, pickeled veggies, pork skin, slice of steamed egg pie, green onion, plus a small cup of broth. It's fast, casual, filling, and delicious. There Bun Bo Hue is really good too. I'm happy they're still around after the pandemic, and they deserve your business. Cash is best here. The owners actually come in to work there regularly, and it seems they even have a family meal together there on occasion.
