This is the signage for the food court, where Pho Ga Hung is located inside of.

It's a difficult place to find in the shopping center to the left of the Lion's store. It's in a food court on the right side of the courtyard. We had to ask for directions to find it. Once we did, the owners were very kind and helpful. I got Chicken Bun, which is not on their menu, but they were happy to oblige, my daughter got the Pork Pho. The food was fresh and was filling. My daughter's Pho was delicious, she let me sample. My Bun was good, but I probably wouldn't get it again here. There are tables and chairs in the open space, the food vendors encircle the dining area. It's kept clean and bussed by a worker there. It's not fancy, but the service and food are good.

Our go to place for some bun rieu soup in lion plaza. Cash only and it comes out super quick. Portions are big for the large, so it could easily be split between two people. Very authentic tasting and has lots of crab meat it. Perfect soup for a cold day and reasonably priced for how much you are getting. With many options to choose from in lion plaza this is one that we always order from. I believe it's cash only and you order then they ring you when it's ready to pick it up from the counter.

    Canh Bun Rau Muong ($15)
    Tiffany Y.

The reviews for here raved about the Canh Bun Rau Muong ($15), so we decided to give it a try. It seems to be a variation of the Bun Rieu (crab noodle soup) except this one has a thicker noodle and rau muong (water spinach) cooked in the broth. The broth was super flavorful and tasted lighter than Bun Rieu's. The noodles were cooked well with the perfect amount of firmness and chewiness. There was also a good amount of fried tofu and crab balls in the dish. I would definitely come back here if I'm ever craving a solid bowl of noodle soup!

Pho Ga Hung is located inside Lion Plaza's food court. It's one of the few places that actually accepts card. I recently tried the bun rieu and the banh canh. Bun rieu is the tomato paste soup with crab roe and banh canh is like a Vietnanede seafood udon. Each bowl is loaded with lots of meats, veggies and noodles. On a cold day, it's nice to have a super piping hot bowl of noodle soup. The staff was very nice and answered any questions I had regarding the menu or ingredients. They even give you an estimate of when your order will be ready. Overall, they are fast, friendly and their noodle soups satisfies your craving for a hot bowl of noodle soup that isn't pho.

Really delicious, heart warming bowl of noodles. Ordered the #2 chicken large noodle with everything. Soup comes piping hot with chicken (with skin), chicken gizzard, chicken liver. Basil, bean sprouts, jalapeño slice, and hoisin sriracha, on the side. Owner asks if you'd like black pepper on it, say yes! It really brings out the flavours of the dish. Served with a tea. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I did feel there was some msg in the soup as was a bit thirsty for about an hour after. Will return!

Kinda gives a home cooked meal vibe. This location is kind of difficult to find, but it's located deep inside the Asian plaza by Eastridge mall. Go with the bun rieu, can't go wrong with that. The lady and the man that took my order were also amiable to the max!

Been going to this place for more than 20 years plus for canh bun. It was the spot back in the days for the Vietnamese folks on weekends. Reminds me of the times where my brother would take my family here on the weekends to walk around , check out CDs (yes CDs ) and then rewards us with sugarcane juice and canh bun. Yay! Lol The lady owner is always super friendly welcoming every time I'm helped by her . The soup is always consistent and yummy. Same old classic taste. Price wise is not so bad. They raised the price but still good. One bowl of canh bun is $9.50. considering how costly things are anywhere else. Can't get tired of canh bun here. :)

    Bun canh rau muon

Food was quite expensive. They only accept cash. Don't get the porridge, not worth it. It's not good and it's not worth of money. Only their Bun rieu rau muon is good.

A hidden gem in San Jose, Pho Ga Hung serves up the best bowl of pho. It is a favorite of my dad so we come here when we can. It can be easy to miss as it is tucked away inside the Lion Plaza, located in the food court towards the back. The best part is their broth is always hot when you receive the bowl, unlike other locations. They also offer fresh, large pho noodle (banh pho tuoi) which many other pho places don't offer. The pho itself is very affordable and they have a variety of options to choose from. The location is very casual as you order, pay, pick up, and eat in the food court. No need to clean up after yourself when you're done because the food court had someone to go around and clean up after (usually I leave a couple dollars tip for them as a courtesy).

Canh Bún Rau Mung - $8

Located in the Lion Plaza food court, Pho Gà Hung (PGH) serves up a huge selection of Northern Vietnamese soups. As their name suggests, they specialize in Pho Gà (aka Viet Chicken Soup), but their other soups are just as commendable. I've been working in the area and dined here several times and, although I've barely scratched the surface of their menu, I feel like it's time to review. Canh Bún Rau Mung: Thanks to Randy F's fabulous review and pics, I was turned onto this Bún Riêu variation. This soup is served up with big chunks of Tofu, Crab Meatballs, round Rice Noodles (Bún) and Water Spinach (Rau Mung) in a light crab-tomato broth. The noodles were the standard Bún noodles you find everywhere and amply supplied; I was a big fan of the tender and perfectly cooked crab meatballs; I loved the leafy and earthy Rau Mung; the Tofu was, well, Tofu; and the broth was a bit too light for my taste until I mixed in the supplied Anchovy Paste and then--Bam! Whole new level, baby! The fishy, briney taste of the Anchovy really does perk everything up, and makes the whole dish sing in your mouth. 4.5* Pho Gà Dâc Biêt: Couldn't go to a place called PGH, and not try their Pho Gà (Chicken Soup), right? Apparently, their special combination (Dâc Biêt) comes with such "delicacies" as liver, heart, gizzard and intestines, as well as big chunks of white, or dark meat (your choice). The broth was excellent and tasted like Chicken Soup should, and I really liked that you could upgrade to the "fresh" noodles without an extra charge. The meat was fine, but next time I'm getting the non-special... 4* Bún bò Huê: BBH is my current favorite Viet soup, and PGH's version is not the best I've had, but it's up there. They serve it with a copious helping of the standard Bún noodles, and maybe one of the best selections of meat I've had to date in a BBH; they have the typical Cha Lua and congealed Pig's Blood, but they also throw in some deliciously, tender beef cuts (e.g., Brisket, Flank, tendon) that you don't often get in BBH. Their Broth is beefy, and super-spicy but lacks the nice subtle, lemongrassy nuances that a good BBH broth should have--but enter their amazing Anchovy Paste to save the day. Mix that blob of fishy goodness in, and watch the magic happen! You'll just have to trust me on this one... 4* Value- A loaded up bowl of PGH's soups will run you around $8, which is a pretty good value these days. I've heard that BBH An Nam has raised their prices to almost $11/bowl and they don't give you half as much meat as PGH. 4.5* Service & Ambiance- The Lion Plaza Food Court is not the most charming place to have lunch, but there's something slightly endearing about it. I'd only come during the week tho, when it's nice and chill--I've heard the weekends are a mad house. This is rustic dining at its best. The owners of PGH have got to be the nicest Viet restaurant owners I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. They always have a smile on their face, and seem happy to serve you--imagine that!! The head chef is a really nice guy, and I'd recommend ordering through him, as he actually speaks English (imagine that²!!!), and is happy to customize your order for you. Ambiance 3.5*/Service 5* I was originally going to give PGH a 4-star review, but the more I got to thinking about it, the more I felt like their excellent service really earned them the coveted 5th Star. I rarely give out 5-star reviews to Viet joints, and it's mostly due to a lack of conviviality in the staff. So, if you're in the Lion Plaza and looking for soup with a smile, than PGH is your spot!

    Pho ga, number 2

This place was so hard to find, it's really tucked between the shops off to the side of the supermarket plaza and through some doors where you find the food court. I had my hopes up for the pho ga based on all the great reviews, but I didn't love it. Not salty enough and the chicken was just ok, not a ton of it either. Turtle Tower in SF and Pho Element in San Mateo are preferable for me.

    Bun Bo Hue - $8
    Derek S.

Came by for lunch after seeing John D's photos of his Bun Bo Hue. Ordered mine with the friendly lady behind the counter and gave her $8 tax "included." The tray included a cup of hot tea, a bed of vegetables, and some dipping sauce. The Bun Bo Hue itself was mediocre. The soup wasn't really spicy and was probably too thick... The meat was over-cooked, dry, and didn't seem too fresh...bummer. At least the noodles and meatloaf tasted fresh? ...I'll stick with Quan Hue next door for BBH next time!

I was especially hoping the spring rolls would be similar to the ones I love from Brodard in Southern California, so I came in with my fingers crossed. They have some nice combo deals, but I wanted to sample a few different items instead. I ordered one of each of the fried egg rolls (only $2 each) and originally ordered the pork and shrimp spring rolls. While I was waiting, I changed my mind and decided I wanted to try the Nem Nuong rolls instead. They were incredibly nice and changed my order without any issues, which I really appreciated. The place was extremely busy, so I ended up waiting about 15-20 minutes, but it was definitely worth it. The net-wrapped egg roll was excellent, super crispy with great flavor. Just be sure to eat it over a plate or with a bag underneath because those crunchy flakes go everywhere! The regular egg roll was slimmer than I expected, but it was also very tasty. The Nem Nuong rolls were good too. They didn't quite reach the level I was hoping for compared to Brodard, but they were still very enjoyable. The house dipping sauce was delicious and really complemented the rolls. They also include a small container of hot sauce for anyone who likes a little spice. I tried it, but honestly preferred sticking with the house sauce. The restaurant itself is small and simple, with only about three tables, so it seems like it's geared more toward takeout, which was obvious from the steady stream of takeout orders while I was there. Next time, I'll probably call my order in ahead of time to save some waiting. Overall, a great spot for Vietnamese appetizers at reasonable prices. I'll definitely be back to work my way through more of the menu.

Service was definitely on the slower side that day, but thankfully we were proactive at getting the orders in. The Bun Cha Ha Noi was delicious - pretty much a DIY spring roll - all the fun, all the mess, with none of the clean up other than licking the plates clean. The pork belly was delicious; I was surprised how much I liked it, since I'm not a fan of pork. I devoured numerous rolls, and we also had some extra vermicelli to finish off the rest of the protein. This single meal was definitely more than enough for two! The Banh Mi Cari De (goat curry) was unfortunately quite the opposite. The goat was cooked very well - tough, gamy, and difficult to eat. There were probably six pieces in total, our first was tender, our second had bone, a little harder to chew, and the last was best compared to rubber. The curry was a bit watery, which made the banh mi soggy when dipped in. This was probably an adventurous try, but not a dish I'd ever consider ordering again.

It's not outstanding, but it's definitely enjoyable. Unfortunately, the service ruined the experience.
