Pre-Covid, you could eat in the shop. When the pandemic hit, they started only taking orders through a window/counter and it's been like that since. I have just tried this place this morning. For my opinion, the quality of the food here is: 1. Fish sauce (nước mắm): is BAD as the other Vietnamese restaurants in San jose. It seems like they don't know how to make a STANDARD Vietnamese fish sauce in a correct way. They should learn how to do a GOOD fish sauce before opening a restaurant ! 2.Vietnamese pork roll (chả lụa): is very BAD, and probably it's the worst quality of Chả lụa that I have ever tasted in my life so far ! So, don't buy it if you don't wanna waste your money to buy Chả lụa here except you really wanna try how bad it is ! 3. I didn't write a review then and decided just to not order here again. My go to banh cuon tray is the one located on Senter road with the same name. But I keep forgetting which one I prefer! Other day I accidentally ordered here again. I ordered: 3 lb shrimp rolls ($5/lb) 3 lb pork rolls ($6/lb) Cash only I expected a tray for a 6 lb order.. The 2 sets were packaged separately. My family has been coming to this Santa Clara location since I can remember. Whenever we visit SJ, we always stop by this place to get our favorite yummy banh cuon and fried pastry (forget the name). I am very particular when it comes to the texture of banh cuon. When you put it in your mouth, it melts and blends nicely with all the other toppings. Warning: you can't just have one plate because it is that good! I usually save my hungry tummy so that I can have seconds and thirds if I know that is the day we are visiting this store. The banh cuon is delicious, and the place also have name Thanh Tri now. Btw, to be clear on one thing, I don't know would the price change to tomorrow or not, but it is not the same as picture. Second, the place listed as import foods. The food is made right there, fresh, and is not import food. Third, the lady don't really speak English, so who did that to the website to her must be angry, or hostile towards the matter. This place is a well-known secret among my family and extended family. I've been eating the rice noodles from this place since I was little. My mom says she's been purchasing from this place for over 10 years already. My mom will only buy bánh t and bánh cun from this place. The boss lady makes the rice noodles in house and my mom has said that there are times where she sells out. The outside looks very shabby, no lie, and the neighborhood it's located is pretty shady but the noodles are so good you would definitely forget about all that. We usually buy 3-4 lbs for a family of 5 which is about $10-$12. We usually have leftovers which we save for the next day. My mom usually gets bánh t and we buy ch la and veggies from a super market to accompany the báhn t. Overall, the place is a hidden gem and definitely worth the drive down to get some. I read most of the reviews before visiting this shop since I don't speak or read Vietnamese and knew the signs were all in Vietnamese. The shop lady has no problem conversing in English. Bought $13.75 worth of stuff but was charged $15 1lb Bánh Hành (rice roll w/ fried onions $3.75) 1lb Bánh Thįt (rice roll w/ minced pork and mushrooms topped w/ fried onions $5.50, 5 minute wait where she microwaved something in the back) 1 roll Cha lua (vietsausage $4.50) - packaging didn't smell great, but the sausage inside tasted fine, I pan fried mine to warm it up. Didn't buy a few ingredients there since prices were removed from the overhead board and didn't look too appetizing. - Nuoc Mam (fish sauce mixture) since it was a lot in a plastic cup and I wanted to mix my own w/ garlic and lime juice. For one serving: mix 1/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup fish sauce 1/2 cup water, one lime juice, one clove of garlic. - Fresh mint & basil since I had some growing in my garden. One of my favorite places for banh cuon (rice noodle rolls)! Always fresh and the perfect texture. We always buy a few pounds and eat it over a day or two. The plain banh cuon pairs perfectly with my mom's nuoc mam and Duc Huong's cha lua. This place is super lowkey and easy to miss but once you try it, you'll always want to come back! In terms of Vietnamese food, banh cuon is often over looked when compared to other mainstream items like pho and banh mi! Banh Cuon are "rice rolls" have always been one of my favorite dishes. You can find some really GOOD and authentic banh cuon at Lo Banh Cuon on the Eastside/Downtown SJ boarder. Lo Banh Cuon is HOLE IN THE WALL to the max! It looks really grungy from the outside (and inside) but the food is so tasty. They sell several varieties but my favorite is the plain (with dried onions) or the shrimp ones. You buy it by the pound and it's packaged for you in saran wrap. They do sell nuoc mam (fish sauce), gio cha (steamed pork), and other "side dishes". I usually grab the basics here and then stop by the Vietnamese market to get fresh garnishes (cucumbers, mint leaves, bean sprouts, etc.) to complete my meal. Beautiful texture, not at all clumpy, and delicious. They have somewhat of a rewards program written by hand to redeem points for calendars and such for loyal customers. The first thing to know about this place is that it's not a restaurant. You can't sit and eat there. The food is quite delicious, but best for you to order in large quantities for parties, or in small quantities to bring home and eat. This place is an unremarkable hole in the wall place. Upon entering, you see quite a sizable storefront; most of it blocked off and unused. Instead, on your right you see a counter where a man and a woman (I assume husband and wife) take your order. There are three types of banh cuon sold here: Pork, Shrimp, and Onion. The owner tells me that the onion is most popular. Food is sold by the pound, and a typically serving at a restaurant is probably 0.8 lbs or so, if that helps you figure out your portions for ordering. I ordered 4 lbs, one of each plus an extra pound of the pork. I was surprised to find that this banh cuon is quite good, far surpassing any I've ever had in a restaurant. There's very much of a homemade taste to it. Your food comes wrapped in plastic wrap so it doesn't look very appitizing. And then when you get home you have to cut it up on your own, and add other elements like greens and bean sprouts and fish sauce... but I definitely think this place is worth checking out, especially if you take your banh cuon very seriously. If you just have a quick craving you need to satisfy though, going straight to a restaurant where they can serve it to you would be best. You can also order the extra fixings such as cha lua (Vietnamese pork), nuoc mam (fish sauce) and veggies like bean sprouts and cucumber. My family of 6 will usually order 4-5 pounds and will STILL have leftovers for the next day! No exaggerations here; I could eat this stuff everyday. It would be my DREAAAAAM. But my sisters and I prefer the greasiness, though we probably should not if we don't want to get depressed when we hit the scales. My advice: get the banh cuon thanh tri (paper-thin wide rice noodles with fried shallots) with some pork meatloaf, bean sprouts, cucumbers and basil. For some reason, all this talk of PHO was making me CRAVE my FAVORITE VietNamese dish --- Banh Cuon: paper-thin ravioli like noodles with stir-fried ground pork, onions, pepper and fungus wrapped inside. Since I was in an exploratory mood --- I decided to let my GyPSy guide me to where I should grub first. The minute I saw Lo Banh Cuon --- I just KNEW I had to try it out. Seriously. If you're going to name your place after something --- that something better be the BEST in town. On the way I called ahead. Apparently, this was not a sit down kind of establishment. You call in to order how many pounds of the noodles you'll be needing and these folks will have it ready as you arrive. I was fine with that, until.... I was told by the owner that she won't make the Banh Cuon nhan thit (with meat) on Sundays. They'll only serve it plain, with fried shallots OR with dried shrimp. I absolutely DETEST dried shrimp. I wheedled. I begged. I bartered to no avail. SO --- my suggestion --- order the one with the deep-fried shallots. The noodles here (both the banh cuon, and the hu tieu --- thick rice noodles --- for soups) are really REALLY fresh. So it's an absolute bargain at $2 - $2.50/pound. Their meats are not pricey at all. You know, the gio (steamed processed pork) to go along with your banh cuon. I would definitely just do the one stop shopping expedition for my take-out meal here. You'll want to buy around 3 lbs of the banh cuon to serve approximately 4. Y'know? Not bad. NOT bad at all. The banh cuon here is omg good!!! Wow! Used yelp to find this place so I was expecting the bare nearly empty dark store in a ghetto-ish looking area. I parked on the street next to mcdonalds. I ordered in Vietnamese. One lb of plain (banh cuon khong) and a lb with the crunchy onions (banh cuon hang). I had already bought a gio lua from Duc Huong's when I dropped my daddy off at the Orange County bus. I didn't realize they don't include the fish sauce. Maybe you have to ask for it? But no worries.... I just used my basic one stored in the fridge (1 part fish sauce, 1 part sugar, 1 part rice vinegar, and 2 parts water, heat just to dissolve and store in glass jar in fridge... Put some in bowl with some garlic chili paste when serving... Can dilute with more water if needed... I usually use 1/2 cup increments to fill an old glass jar). So back to the banh cuon. It is soft with just the right chew and reminds me of eating banh cuon as a child when my mom would bring a tray home from ?store in Westminster where they make it fresh. I like putting the fixings on myself: fried tofu, gio lua and bean sprouts. I'm not really a fan of the stuffed banh cuon at restaurants because fresh sheets of banh cuon always tastes better and you can adjust the toppings. Too bad this place is 36min away without traffic. This place has been family tradition since I was growing up. The place serves the most fresh banh cuon ever! She offers plain, shrimp and onion banh cuon. My favorite is the onion one. You order by the lbs. 4lbs can easily fill up my family of 4 for an entire day. The range for each lb is between 2.50-3.50. She also sells additional items to compliment the banh cuon (cha lua, fried shrimp, nouc mam) The service is so quick.
