We ordered appetizers, drinks, 4 entrees to dine in and 1 dish to go. 5 total meals. We waited 45 minutes when they came out to tell us that they had NO MORE RICE. Our appetizer did not need any rice and this place is KNOWN FOR THEIR RICE DISHES. ITS IN THEIR NAME. Two other people who came in after us got their rice dishes. They offered for us to change to vermicelli noodles instead. We asked about our appetizer and they told us that it would still be another couple of minutes for that!! The order we wanted to go didn't need rice. They didn't even bother or attempt to serve us that after 45 minutes of waiting. We walked out of there after waiting 45 MINUTES FOR NOTHING. WE DIDNT EVEN GET OUR DRINKS. It's like we didn't exist or they lost our order. They stood around like deer caught in the headlights not doing anything to even try to get our food out to us. We've been coming to this place for YEARS but since it's an hour away, we wasted all that time we could have been driving. We were going to be back down there next weekend and had planned on going back because we liked this place so much. NEVER AGAIN!!! Time to find another place. There were only 10 other people in the restaurant. It was not crowded. This restaurant can likely seat 40+ people. There were THREE people helping with diners in the restaurant (2 females and a male). When we got there, there was a table of four who were already eating. Another table of 4 arrived just ahead of us, there was someone phoning in an order as we were seated and then two more people came in after us. In the 45 minutes that we were there, not a single person checked in on us. They didn't refill our water, bring the drinks we ordered, or serve our appetizers. We arrived a full hour before their listed closing time. We ordered $111.95 (4x$18.50 entrees, 1x $14.50 vermicelli entree to go, 1x $17.95 appetizer, 1x$5.50 lemonade) worth of food and drink. That was the cost before taxes and tip. Our appetizer, 5th entree, and drink did not need rice. What the people working the front end of the restaurant did do is serve food for the table of four that came in literally seconds before we did AND serve to the two tables of single diners who came in well AFTER us. I saw them bring out a third plate but didn't serve it to anyone and took it back to the back. There was another person waiting for their take out inside the restaurant and another two waiting outside when we were told that they ran out of rice. While we waited, there was a steady stream of people picking up take out. So much so my son remarked that was probably why our food was taking so long. I don't know if the kitchen was backed up because of take out orders but they should have taken care of people dining inside first. Secondly, the people just standing around the restaurant could have at the very least in the 45 minutes we sat there refilled our water or check up on us. We were sitting in the middle of the restaurant right in front of them and it was not busy. After they told us they ran out of rice, why would it take them several more minutes to bring out our appetizer and drinks after we had already sat there for 45 minutes? It is very likely they literally forgot about us. I looked back at our previous visits and we've been coming here for around six years. A solid com tam place in the Bay Area! portions, taste, pricing is great here! I got com tam thit nuong, and it comes with a bunch of other proteins and sides. I was very surprised at the large sizing of this plate the picture does not do it justice! I shared this dish with my partner and we were super full afterwards. The fried shrimp cake has a super crispy coating, so crispy it was flakey! It's hard to get this one right, and this restaurant nailed it. When I first arrived to the parking lot, I was nervous about the location. Lots of people in the parking lot being belligerent. I chose a table where I could watch my car, just for own peace of mind. Honestly this place is so filthy inside I almost couldn't order. My friend invited me and I felt like I had to commit after the nice lady asked us what we wanted to order. The floors were sticky, a huge dust ball was clinging on the wall floating around, and when I opened the chili container it was full of mold. It tasted ok but honestly the place is so dirty inside it makes it's really hard to enjoy the meal when you have serious reservations about how it's prepared. I said ok maybe it had the smokey flavor from the thit nuong (grilled meat). Coming back to this restaurant recently was like a time machine back to my childhood. I remember every time I come, I would see the cloud formed from grilling the meat. As we enter, it still had the same interior, for better or worst. The server took a while to came. We ordered the combination plate #7. The meat was cooked fine but could had more of a char taste to it and it felt a bit more on the wet side. The crispy tofu with shrimp was crispy with more meat than I thought, compared to Com Tam Thien Huong The bi had more meat over the fat ratio which was nice. No frill com tam (broken rice plate). Broken rice is a vietnamese rice plate that uses broken rice (tiny rice) that you usually mix with fish oil (you don't have to but I like it that way). The rice plate typically comes with pork chop, egg cake, shrimp cake etc. This place is inside a strip mall and there really isn't much deco but it's clean and that's good enough. A lot of rice plate places are called Com Tam Thanh but so I can see why this is named such way. I think the pork chop here is bigger than the others but the other stuff such as egg cakes are not as good (but close enough). It's not particularly cheaper than other places but the best part is that this is also not as crowded as the more popular broken rice places. Service is good enough for such simple place. Given the plethora of Vietnamese restaurants in, and around, San Jose, I'm genuinely surprised I had never come across a place like Com Tam Dat Thanh before. Tons of banh mi shops and pho joints are around, yet I'd never seen one before that specializes in broken rice plates. So, just for that reason alone, it's not hard to see why I was so excited to come here! Of course, it's not just that they seem to be the only one - the fact that the Yelp reviews are so positive certainly doesn't hurt either! Pulling into the complex, I was quick to discover that my fellow Yelpers weren't lying - parking here can be tough. Although we were able to snag a spot almost immediately, we saw a few cars having to do a few loops around the lot and/or stalk folks walking to their spaces (the lot emptied out a bit by the time we left, though). As far as the menu goes, it was actually kind of weird to see how it's the reverse of what I'm used to - a ridiculously wide range of rice dishes flanked by just a handful of noodle soups and apps to choose from. I added about half the spoon of chili to my sauce, which gave it a kick. Loved the sauce, nice and savory, slighlty sweet, but not too sweet. Grilled Shrimp meat on Sugar was savory. The shredded pork was okay, I could do without it. I didn't try asking for substitute, but next time I would try substituting for BBQ pork instead. On a recent visit, I was glad to see that not much has changed. I ordered the #3 which is Cơm Tấm Sườn Nướng, Tàu Hủ Ky, Bì, Chả, Tôm Nướng, Chào Tôm which is one of their combination specials. It includes quite literally everything and roughly translates to: rice with a BBQ pork chop, fried shrimp cake, shredded pork skin, egg cake, BBQ shrimp, and grilled shrimp meat on a sugarcane. It's one of their greatest hits entrees and well worth the price at $22.50. Every single component of my entree was well executed. The BBQ pork chop + shrimp were BBQing. The fried shrimp cake was frying and grilled shrimp on sugarcane was grilling. And proportionally, each item in this combination platter was substantial - no skimping in these parts. Personally, I think the most important player of this platter is the tàu hủ ky which is the fried shrimp cake. I've encountered plenty of dry, overly peppered versions and most places aren't generous with their portions. But the tàu hủ ky here was perfection. Post COVID reflection is that if a small business was able to keep afloat during such a challenging time in the decade then it should speak for itself in how the community shows up for it. Stopped by this little hole in the wall for some com tam rice plates, and I was actually blown away with how authentic and comforting everything I tried was. I'm not a super big fan of rice so I rarely frequent these spots, but you definitely can't beat their HUGE portions and deliciously grilled/fried meat items. My favorites were the fried shrimp paste, but my plate also came with 5 other types of meat as well as vegetables and complimentary Thai chilis + fish sauce at the table. I still believe that their broken rice plates is hands down the best. This restaurant has been here for years and there is definitely good reason. The aroma from the outside will draw you in. I always order the combination plates to get a little taste of everything (rice with your choice of meat, fried shrimp cake, shredded pork skin, egg cake, BBQ shrimp & grilled shrimp meat on sugarcane). I stick with either the BBQ pork or BBQ chicken. The BBQ meats are very flavorsome and juicy. If you dine in they'll give you a small bowl of soup. The restaurant itself has a lot of tables and the staff here are really nice. Weekends can get crowded but I notice the turnover for tables are really quick. Parking can be a pain and is tight. Knocking down a star because I was never able to finish my plate or was able to share it before (pre-pandemic), but their BBQ meat portion has shrank so much. I've gone to Com Tam Dat Thanh since I was a kid, but this is my first time reviewing the business on Yelp. Just came here yesterday for lunch and the quality is still just as good :) + service is great and quick. + food was honestly amazing. flavors were good, rice was soft, and meat was tender! + they accept card! + you can easily customize your com tam plate, just let them know what you want with it. + each com tam plate still comes with a bowl of soup on the side. - tea is now served in an individual mug, you don't get a whole pot of tea like you used to. - prices have gone up a ton and portion size has gone down significantly. Although some things may have changed at Com Tam Dat Thanh, I still believe that this is the best com tam you can get in San Jose. If you're craving com tam, this is still the spot to go!
